I eat Gluten Free for medical reasons and the Chef and his entire staff were very accommodating. This was very appreciated and I had a great dining experience. The dinner menu was marked with all the available gluten free items along with separate choices if these weren't to my liking. I had no trouble choosing from the menu each night. Breakfast and lunch offered enough choices that were gluten free. Most soups were gluten free. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive at all times. The afternoon tea had gluten free options available if I wanted any. We all enjoyed the cocktail hour before the next day briefing and dinner. The briefing for the next day was very helpful for helping us decide what excursions we wanted to particpate in. We felt the excursions gave us a great variety of site seeing for each country. I would definately choose this cruise line again in the future for another vacation. Read Less

Traveled with a teen and since it was summer there were other teens on board. There are no programs or plans for children/teens though so not recommended if you are looking for someone to entertain them. Ship crew is very friendly and hard working, overall great. Included tours are perfect for an intro to the area although not so great if you want to sleep as most are in the morning. They use local guides that are quite knowledgeable and some are also very entertaining. Schedules are dependent on water levels so some changes to ports and shore excursions may affect your cruise. Be sure you are not too set on seeing a particular site from the cruise as it could be changed. Highly recommend flying in at least one day prior to relax, rest and see the starting destination (you may be bused to a new starting destination and not see that destination at all). Dining was open seating ala carte for dinner, buffet for breakfast and lunch. There was also dining options in the lounge which is recommended to try for a more casual, relaxed meal at your own pace (same menu as the dining room but smaller portions and a buffet). Overall the ship is extremely clean. Beverage service was a little slow. Disembarkation was wonderful, smooth, efficient and quick. There was a variety of ages on the ship with several teens traveling with family up to retired adults. This cruise attracts more active travelers rather than passive although everyone is welcome. I am so happy that my Travel Agent selected the Avalon Waterways. This was my first trip to Europe and I can honestly say I was treated like Royalty. Not only were the accommodations excellent, also were the staff. Never have I seen staff so committed to their job. The atmosphere was like family and we had so much fun with everyone from the Captain Ronald to Director Tony. There was never a dull moment with so many options for excursions offered. The best part is that many of the excursions offered were included with additional excursions offered at a very reasonable price. Let me also mention the food...delicious! All meals offered fresh food options as well as many non-meat options for those vegetarians. Included was a lounge that offered non-alcohol drinks, cookies and pastries at all times! The rooms were always attended to and the finishes were lovely. I can't wait to return!! Read Less

The ship it was built in 2012 and it still looked brand new, our cabin was spacious and well equipped. We arrived on 12 July 2019 and checked into the Movenpick Hotel, Amsterdam City Center, the next morning to Breakfast and finally closed up all our bags ready to board the Avalon Vista to get settled. We had breakfast and prep for our Amsterdam Canal Cruse plus a walking tour, every day there was tours to a lot of the sights. The meals that were provided were very delicious, for those that didn't want a large meal there was a small were served in the Panorama Lounge, it was also the location for all the briefings for the next day’s activities and music/dancing. Each day was filled with tours provided by the cruise lines or optional fee. There were never wants for service because what you might want it was provided. The ports and shore excursions were very well arranged and informative. We know that it takes a lot of planning but the only disappointment was the day of disembarkment from the ship would we would like a mini tour of Basel. This was our first trip on a long ship but it won't be our last because we truly enjoyed it. Read Less

Wonderful cruise. Food was excellent, wine and beer with lunch and dinner was a nice touch. The boat was big enough to not feel confined and small enough to be able to get to use it all. The excursions that came along with the tour were interesting and run by locals. The cruise director worked hard go give us unique experiences. The only bad point - our room repeatedly smelled like cigarettes. Not sure how or why this happened but the room service crew were reluctant to address it. Our sons had their own room on a lower floor. Both were nicely decorated and kept clean throughout the day. Getting on and off the boat was easy. A simple swipe of your room key. Only one day we were the second boat in the harbor and had to walk over and through a different boat to get to shore. The only suggestion, many of the excursions were rushed. It would have been nicer to spend more time at each site. One tip - no need to bring fancy clothes for dinner. As long as you are clean and dressed, things are good. Read Less

Avalon river cruise is absolutely the way to go. Avalon is a first class river cruise line at very reasonable prices. The ship is beautiful, with glass french door walls that open to give you a view of the river, local towns and castles. This was our first river cruise and we traveled with 25 friends and family. Taking a river cruise with friends and family is the way to go, sharing every moment together with members of the group, yet always having the flexibility to wander off on your own. Food on the ship was outstanding, and the crew under the leadership of the Captain felt like an extension of our family. They operated like a well oiled machine.. They were all so cordial, joked, very attentive, and so helpful. Avalon's Cruise Director Monika was so knowledgeable and helpful. She was outstanding and quick to help find out information if needed. All the tours and activities were well organized. What we liked most about the river cruise was the ability to dock next to the town, and go for walks whenever you wanted and wherever you wanted. Avalon also was very considerate of the different type of travelers. If you were older and more limited in walking, they had a gente traveler arrangement and would provide the equivalent of a golf cart in some locations to help ease the touring. Then for those of us that were more active, we could take beautiful hikes, or use the bikes on the ship to go bike riding through the towns and local area. Plus they had the classical tours for the average traveler. Everything was so well thought out. Almost everyone in our group took the top cabin deck and found the views beautiful. At night we would sit on the top ship deck and watch the towns and castles go by all lite up. It was so smooth, like riding on glass. What a change from ocean cruises that are always so crowded and not smooth, plus you have to take tenders to get to the towns your visiting which takes time. If you are thinking about taking a river cruise, everyone in our group highly recommends Avalon. We are already looking at planning another river cruise with Avalon. Read Less

About the Avalon river cruise we first learned from the internet. We booked the river cruise from Nuremberg to Luxemburg on the Main river and the Rhine river. The deal included two nights in a five stars hotel in Prague. We left home with high expectations and immediately in Prague we realized it was really going to be great. We met the cruise manager Tamas who was extremely friendly and helpful. From Prague we were taken by bus to Nuremberg in Germany to board the ship. And here too everything was perfect and the cabin was indeed what we saw in the advertisement. The dinner turned out to be really very good with plenty of good wines to choose from and the food was very decorative and nicely served and we had plenty of food choices. We have nothing but compliments to the organization, the cabin, the maintenance, the excellent food and the way it was served, the friendly staff, the included tours, and the whole cruising area. Having traveled with Avalon before we have found this company provides the best quality experience in every phase of the trip. Last year 3 of us did the Danube cruise from Prague to Budapest. The trip this year we started in Budapest to cruise to Bucharest, Romania with the extension to Transylvania. Fantastic trip by with great excursions with local guides. With Avalon we are well informed every day and our excellent tour director made this experience relaxing and trouble free. Every member of the crew working as a team made every day perfect. The dining onboard is absolutely fantastic. Not only is the food great but menu items allow several choices. Great local wines are served from countries visiting. We especially enjoyed the fine wines from Romania. The dining room staff make you feel like the most important person onboard. We had a delightful young woman from Romania named Maribella who we will never forget. Even visited the bridge to chat with the captain and crew. They go out of the way to cruise with safety and to make sure you have great opportunities for taking photos of sites along the river. We are already booked for spring 2020 to cruise the Rhine River with Avalon! Read Less

My wife and I,her brother and sister and brother in law, decided to take this Rhine river cruise (Basel to Amsterdam) to celebrate my wife's 70th birthday. Cruising was not high on my agenda for likes but after this experience, we are both keen to do more. In early April, we flew from Australia to London and then after a few days to Basel where we joined the cruise. Everything was great - the food (excellent), the cruise director (to the point, humourous and informative), the guides (knew their stuff and added wit and humour), rooms were cleaned regularly and quickly, the bar persons knew their stuff and nothing was too much trouble. The cabin (level 3 panorama) was comfortable and being able to put our suitcases under the bed gave a plenty of room. The bed was very comfortable and having a 7ft sliding window that could be opened gave us the opportunity on occasions to lie on the bed and watch the world go by. The excursions were interesting and informative and we got good exercise by walking around the towns and cities. I certainly benefited from this. Brother and sister in law relished the walking. The boat had around 170-190 people on board with no children and this made the whole atmosphere calm and relaxed - as it should be. The age group was generally average age of around 50-55 with predominantly Americans and Canadians and a few Aussies to sweeten the pot. Dinner was in the dining room with plenty of choices of food and an endless supply of wine and beer. For lunch, you could go to the dining room for more substantial fare or in the lounge area for something light. Overall ambience on board was fantastic. The only negative that I can identify was that the WiFi was poor (and perhaps that the cruise was too short). My wife and I are now converts and are already thinking about another river cruise but perhaps a little longer in duration. We would recommend Avalon to any who are considering a river cruise. I had never been on a river cruise, and had never been to eastern Europe, so this cruise ticked all the boxes for a new adventure. Avalon did not disappoint. The boat was meticulous, I loved that my bed faced the river and I could open my sliding glass door fully, the bathroom was surprisingly big and the marble tile was an unexpected nice feature, the staff were exceptionally friendly, attentive, engaging, and helpful, the food and wine were outstanding (the soups, I'd book another cruise just for the soups! They should seriously make a recipe book just with the soups alone.), our cruise director Tony was delightfully funny and insightful, and our captain made the best of a very low river. No rain in Europe this year did cause our cruise to be adjusted as we went farther North, but Avalon went out of its way to make the adjustments equal or better to the original itinerary, including offering free excursions. Those travelling with me all agreed that the adjustments to our itinerary were better than the original and we were very appreciative at the effort Avalon took to make sure our river cruise experience was exceptional. The guides on the excursions were all very knowledgeable and friendly. The pace of some of the excursions was a tad slow, but as I was the youngest person on the cruise (40s), I understood the pace was designed for the overall group demographic (60s-80s). Would definitely book another Avalon cruise again! Read Less

My wife andI have made many ocean and river cruises. Our latest trip on the Avalon Tapestry II has been the best ever. The route is Paris to Normandy with many charming and informative stops. The guides provided by Avalon were without exception top flight. The only negative was the 5 hour round trip on a bus to get to Omaha Beach. Listening devices were provided fo all guided tours and they worked marvelously l. The personnel on this ship are extraordinarily thoughtful. The food is as good as Oceania and special effort is made to cater to special diets. All the public spaces are well maintained and put the passenger at ease. Our room was well designed with plenty of closet and shelf space. The bathroom was smallish but well designed, with a great deal of space to lay out personal items. Because we booked late we had a room with just a high, not full, window. But there were plenty of comfortable chairs on the upper deck, and the windows in the interior public areas provided a full view of the passing shore line. The cruise director provided a lot of good information without the false heartiness so many of that breed are prone to. The dress code was very relaxed without a sports jacket in sight. Read Less

What a marvelous start, all of the crew treated us as long term good friends, right from the Captain to the room staff. Our Cruise Director Ms. Barbara Bocz proved to be the number one person to handle all requests , solve any problems and in doing so, made us all happy to be onboard! The accommodations, meals, staff services in all areas far exceeded any preconceived expectations. It’s impossible to mention all the staff by name but we do wish to make special comments on the extra efforts made by Lucas, head of dining and two fantastic young ladies Beden and Mimi who were wonderfully enthusiastic and full of fun in making our meals a every enjoyable experience. Charlotte our room (233) daily basis attendant looked after our accommodations expertly and in very friendly manner . News of the required transfer to the second ship came because of river water levels , Barbara stepped up here, professionally handling all customers concerns whether staying with the cruise or going on by bus. Those that took the remainder of the trip by bus were totally refunded the days they missed on the ship and were provided hotels, transportation and food on behalf of Avalon!! We decided to stay with the cruise and received a cash compensation for our trouble. Our Cruise Director Barbara stayed on the Visionary which was fantastic!! We did have a fantastic time on the cruise and look forward to doing it again! Read Less

We were traveling with 3 adult children (in their 20's) and selected Avalon because of the general itinerary and the fact there was not a single supplement add-on for single rooms (which each of our kids had). On this itinerary, there were 3 nights where we could be "in town" to explore for dinner and bars (Amsterdam, Cologne and Rudesheim)- which as great. The shore excursions were good - though I wish the walking tours were 45 minutes (instead of 1+ hours) and we that were given more free time. We would often peel off from the walking tour so that we could have more free time on our own. (You really don't feel like you have been someplace until you have wandered on your own - and 0-45 minutes of free time just is not enough). We did a few of the add-on excursions - biking, Maginot Line, Alsace Wine Tour, Colmar. We also did the add-on of Luzern, Zurich and Como - which was a wonderful way to enhance this trip. Monograms got us to the locations, then lots of free time to spend as we please. Our kids were certainly a curiosity on this trip (there was 1 couple in their 40's, then everyone was 60+) but they loved the flow of wine and beer at all meals, the underutilized fitness room, snoozing and reading on the sky deck, and all the cities and towns they got to see. This trip offered a wonderful, stress-free and fun-filled way to spend time as a family. Read Less

I choose this trip as an add-on to a bus tour of Switzerland. The Imagery is a beautiful two year old ship with 128 person capacity had 104 passengers on our sailing. It was my first experience on a river cruise and I enjoyed the intimate atmosphere as compared with a large ocean cruise. The cabin was perfectly designed with one mirrored wall and one floor to ceiling sliding glass door. Our spotless bathroom was beautiful and had a frame-less shower and marble tile. The staff provided outstanding service and we participated in some very good excursions. We enjoyed our culinary experience as well: every meal contained many choices and delicious food. Every dinner had five courses and a choice of at least three items in each course in addition to a choice of three wines. I honestly can't think of anything negative to say about this trip and would definitely travel with Avalon again. Read Less

We had travelled with Avalon previously in 2015 and spent a lot of time convincing my sister and her husband to join us for the Budapest to Amsterdam cruise. This was to be the trip of a lifetime for my sister. As you read on you will feel our disappointment with the trip but please read to the end of my comments. On arrival in Budapest we met people who had travelled up from Amsterdam and were told that their cruise had been impacted by low water levels. Later we were told that a large group of Americans had cancelled for our trip leaving just 88 people out of a possible 140 guests. The cruise started well and soon reinforced our decision to convince our family members to join us. By the time we reached Passau we were informed that low water would prevent our on travel and we would be bused for a few days and that the boat might catch us later down river. Our options were to leave the tour then with a refund of the remaining sailing component of the fees. The other option was to stay with the group and Avalon has promised, in writing, to refund 50% of the cruise component for the bus trip days. This is a fair option but at the time of offer we had a glimmer of hope that we would be reunited with the boat soon. Almost all on board took the option to stay with the group. Aussies and Kiwis are pretty resilient so despite some grumbles they were up for the challenge. Unfortunately reuniting with the boat did not eventuate and in the final analysis we had a tiring experience busing through busy Europe to complete our planned excursion visits and ongoing passage towards Amsterdam. It was hot, many of the coaches were cramped and poorly airconditioned. Early morning departures lessened the trip experience further and in my opinion it became more like a "going to work" experience. The hot conditions took their toll and many were exhausted by the daily grind. There were no opportunities for people to opt out and take a day off as was possible on the boat. This was a problem that could have been managed by the bus options to include a day off option or bypass to the next destination. Nevertheless there are some good points to stress. First the standard of the boat and crew was exceptional. Friendly and helpful at all times. The cruise director Andre and later with assistance from Hans were very experienced people and quite sensitive to needs however there were some gaps in the itinerary that appeared to meet the needs of the company rather than the guests.....bad business practice ! We saw quite a bit of the country side but from a bus view it was restricted and I think many guests just slept their way through the excursions...missing a lot along the way. These guys were also very entertaining and provided an essential buffer to reduce possible ill feelings amongst the guests towards Avalon. So where does this leave me and my family in regard to this trip and Avalon ? Obviously you can see this was a disappointing outcome which as mentioned can happen with high or low water conditions. Assuming that Avalon meet their stated refund then I will have confidence to travel with them again. That would be a fair deal. I would caution Avalon in making assumptions about bus travel in very hot conditions. They may have dodged a bullit if there had been a serious heat stroke. Some came close to it. At this stage we will try Avalon again. Their facilities and staff and services are to good to not travel with again ! And we will all watch the weather predictions more closely when booking....next time. Read Less

Our grandparents took me and my sister on this cruise. This was our first Avalon Waterways cruise. The overall experience on the cruise was very good! Some of the shore excursions were rushed though. For example, in Hiedlberg the castle tour did not cover much at all and we had little time in the city. Other cities would have been much more enjoyable with more time in them, also. The restaurant food was delicious and there were many options. All of the staff were excellent. Both the embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. Our cruise director was very organized and so were the rest of the staff. The rooms were nicely cleaned and set up each night. Over all this was a very good Avalon Waterways cruise along the Rhine River. We really enjoyed this cruise and would definitely recommend this cruise on the Rhine to our family and friends. Read Less

This location was a place my late husband had always wanted to visit as a WW II history buff. My daughter and I took the cruise in his honor to visit and hear about the times and places he had such avid interest in. We selected this cruise because of its focus and that there would be a historian to accompany along the trip. Nigel Stewart was wonderful on his delivery of what was happening during the time leading up to the Normandy invasion. His insight on the military figures, leaders and family stories was so engaging. The Captain, Cruise Director and the entire crew and staff were absolutely wonderful and made our cruise such a wonderful, delightful, and special vacation for us. Everyone was so attentive and cared for our every request. The Cruise Director, Tony Williamson, had the perfect communication plan to gather us to advise us on the next day's activities and what we needed to know. He and Captain Rudy were always at at the gang plank to send us off and greet us when we returned to wish us a great trip. Staff in the lounge or dining room were attentive and quickly addressed any requests for extra bread, drinks and freely poured wine during the entire meal. Excellent service by all. The ship was beautiful and our state room was great. Small, but that is what cruise cabins are, and the condition and fixtures were more than accommodating to our needs. The staff always cared for us and made our trip so enjoyable. Meals were amazing and the group dinner meals or the quick self serve lunch in the lounge were equally delicious and delightful. Cruising during meal times added so much to seeing sights along the river while gently cruising along. The only criticism we had was that if you sat in the middle part of the main diining room there were lengthy delays in being served. On one such meal iwe were not served our main entree, when our table neighbors had already finished their dessert. Excursions offered were very enjoyable and depending on the guide, we were provided with great history, background with time to venture around the villages. The only disappointments were a stop in Caudebec and one of the Paris excursions when we returned to port. We arrived at Caudebec, and the excursion offered was not of interest to us, but then it turns out that the village shops were not open on Mondays. So while we could walk around to visit see the village, we could not shop for any local specialties. The Paris bike tour was not as was presented and should have indicated not for a novice rider, Perhaps the group of 11 was too large, but we traveled through heavily trafficked Paris streets and tourists venues. So my own ride was stressful in that I was worried about staying connected to the group and out of the car and pedestrian pathways that I did not enjoy it at all. Embarking and disembarking were flawless, clearly defined processes, bags were picked up immediately as we put them outside our state room, and were outside our transfer without having to identify them first. The ship crew were wonderful and so professional. The Tapestry II cruise was our first ever cruise of any kind and I must say I feel spoiled that I would not want to cruise any other way!!! I loved being able to sit out on the front, top deck or rear lounge areas while we cruised. It was so peaceful, presented great opportunity for pictures along the way, or just to get alone time if you wanted it. Other travelers were so friendly and it was great to meet others and talk about their travel experiences and why they chose the cruise as well. We also booked additional time before and after the cruise that Globus assisted us with for hotel and transfers. All was done with no effort on our part and went very smoothly. The few negatives mentioned, did not spoil our trip and we had a wonderful time. Avalon will be a first choice for a new adventure! Read Less

This was my first cruise and it was with my adult relatives. We started from Paris and went to Le Havre with a side trip to Normandy. Each day was 1 or 2 shore excursions that were generally enjoyable as they were to historic areas or buildings. Tours of Versaille and Le Louvre were almost surreal due to the crowds so be prepared. I also had a couple of days before the cruise to see some of Paris which helped the trip feel complete. The rooms were compact but very comfortable, although we weren't in them much due to all the activities. Food was plentiful and leaned towards the high end, definitely not steaks and pasta. Although it seemed we were eating all the time the portions where small (but sufficient) so it was easy to not feel stuffed. Wine is all you can drink. There were also 24/7 snacks available. I would have preferred a little earlier dinner time but since there weren't planned events afterwards it worked out. A great memory was setting on the deck after dinner and watching the scenery go by as the sun set - really amazing. The crew was great, very friendly and helpful. Entertainment on board was mostly just happy hour, with a couple of events like cooking and a classical band - which I enjoyed greatly even though I am a rock fan. One criticism of the tour was that the bus travel cut into the time at the destination. Of course that is inevitable because the river doesn't just flow right up to everything. Normandy felt especially rushed because we went to Point du Hoc in the morning and then the Normandy cemetery in the afternoon with a quick lunch at a golf course in between. I think I would not want to skip either but we needed more time. In my case I probably could have ignored the tour guide because I was already familiar with the historic events so maybe less talking and more wandering would have helped. A box lunch could have saved time, too, although the restaurant did a great job at serving us quickly. I would have liked to gone to one of the private museums along the way. To me this was a trip of a lifetime (so far) and it was exactly what I wanted. The small boat made everything feel much more cozy and not just a floating hotel. Highly recommended. Read Less

We heard this Danube river cruise is the best in East Europe because it courses through agrarian countrysides, includes tours of interesting towns and has a special East-Euro feel due to the crew also coming from Eastern Europe. It did not disappoint. Robert Zieminski, the Cruise Director is a calm, humorous, knowledgeable, professional with extensive experience in the region. A great example of first rate service is Florin, our waiter/adviser/friend. He not only humorously catered to our every need, but also offered advice on local foods, customs, and activities. Thank you, Florin. Dining was a wonderful experience. Chef prepared meals and specialties even at breakfast! The food was first class, wines from the region offered previews of shore days in the Wachau valley. We were delighted with every meal. Avalon made even the unexpected seem routine... 3 days before disembarking, a barge grounded up-river. We had to stop at Vilshofen. While there, Avalon provided coach travel to our planned destinations with seamless service. Almost every shore excursion went as planned; an excursion to Melk Abbey was even added to the provided tour list. The hotels were 5 star. Can't say enough about the services both on-board and on-shore! Thanks for a marvelous experience, Avalon! Read Less

the quality of the rooms, service, and food on board completely shattered the preconception i had of such way of travelling before i joined our rhine river cruise with avalon waterways. pleasantly surprised all the way. i really enjoyed the service provided by the staff who is most helpful, attentive and careful to our needs. the stops were well balanced and allowed to visit a great diversity of places to understand and experience the culture along the river from basel to amsterdam. the guides at each stops were enteraintaing and knowledgeable which made for a pleasant introduction of each town. however, if i returno n board, i will not join such guided tours and will hope that avalon can provide more tips about each destinations (perhaps in the form of a detailed map with points of interest) so that i can go and wander around bymyself without the fear of "missing out". a wonderful way to travel europe without the hassles of driving or airport management. the only draw back was the fact that ships sometimes dock alongside each other completely removing the view and privacy of the room. even so, an absolutely wonderful experience to be repeated as soon as possible. well done! I have been on many and loved ocean cruises so I was really leery taking a river cruise. As soon as we boarded the ship everything changed. Things were so easy, no confusion, simple on board drill. There were 130 passengers and 30 crew members. After 8 days you know everyone. Basically one large family! You wake up at around 7am, go down to breakfast. Between 8:30-9:00 board a bus for the first tour of the day. I recommend taking two tours/excursions a day, even if you have to pay for one. The first tour gets you back to the ship around 11:30-12:00 then lunch. The second tour/excursion departs around 1:30. You get back to the ship around 5:15 - 5:45 just in time for Happy Hour :) I would go up on deck with my double Manhattan and cigar (smoking is allowed on the back of the sun deck) and relax for an hour, then time to shower and eat dinner. All meals were great. Wine and beer are included on this ship at meal time so everyone loads up on wine with dinner! On cruise ships there is a drink package, but it's absolutely not necessary on a river cruise. All the ports were great. Tour guides were very knowledgeable. I loved the room although small, the bathroom and shower was large for a ship of any size. All the beds face the water and the sliding doors open the room up to one large balcony although we really didn't use that option often. I would highly recommend Avalon Imagery ll From the cleanliness of the ship, great food, to the entire crew. I commend you!!! Read Less

These River Boats are great for adult family getaways with activities provided along with time to reconnect with family members. If traveling alone or with couples the staff does a great job of having everyone feel welcome. Anyone looking at these trips need to remember to book in advance as trips sell out quickly. Traveling on river ships, allows a great way to see the the true European Cities and experience the culture.
