We had previously taken a cruise with Avalon of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. We loved travelling through the Rhine gorge, so we took the Basel to Amsterdam cruise. This not only gave use a portion of the Rhine and cities in Switzerland, France and Germany we hade not visited before, but also took us again through the beautiful Rhine gorge with its magnificent scenery. We were not disappointed. The ship is amazing, with its French Balcony suite rooms, with the beds all facing the glass walls of the room, which slide open when the weather is permitting. The food and service were better than what we had on former cruises, which I thought would be impossible to match. The shore excursions were very interesting, informative and were worth the time. The extra excursions that we paid for were extraordinary and worth every penny spent. I would highly recommend this cruise to anyone interested in a magnificent experience of the Rhine River. This was our first, but not out last, river cruise. My husband and I loved everything about cruising with Avalon. It's interesting to hear people talk about other lines. We would choose Avalon again without hesitating. The service was GREAT. We might go for an upper cabin next time. It's true that you don't spend so much time in your room, but I did not realize that the room would be below the site line of the window. Next time... :)) I want to give a shout out the chef and his team. We had a special meal and they simply could not have been more accommodating. I don't know about the other special requests, but the vegan meals prepared for us were spectacular. The first night we got white rice and they asked how we liked the dinner. We said it was great but we preferred brown rice and whole grain. Done! They were fabulous. Thanks again to the chef and his gang! The sporty excursions did not disappoint. The biking, hiking, and canoeing were better than we expected. Thank you Avalon. See you again. Read Less

Jewish Heritage Cruise was way above our expectations. Two excursions included everyday. Way more than was advertised. Lecturers/Speakers on board were excellent. Chef and Cruise Director modified things to meet the special topic cruisers. Incredible state room opened Completely so we cruised in bed with the room open to river sounds and smells. Great food beautifully presented. Class A hotels at both Budapest and Prague with perfect locations and excellent views. Very high level buses for tours. Almost all guides had excellent English. Broke groups into small like 20 people so big buses half empty. Whole ship only about 120 people. Great sound speaker system on all tours. A few optional tours were good and not high priced. Wait staff very friendly and efficient. In trying to find something negative to say: Marketing materials said there would be nightly 10:30 food that didn’t happen. Also, tea time was almost always taken down before tours returned to ship. Bar wait staff was not really interested in selling drinks - didn’t work the room during happy hour or during lectures, didn’t know what liquor they had, etc. Marketing materials and even signs on ship said they had a beauty salon but crew said that was closed years ago. None of the negatives hurt the trip which was fantastic and we are veterans of 20+ cruises. Read Less

It sounded like a great idea to Cruise the Rhine and we added 3 nights in Zurich to the end. Our room was excellent but the true stars were the staff. There was not one who didn’t go out of they’re way to provide us with a great experience. With only 168 guests we had a chance to meet just about all of them. The food was fantastic with a lot of choices. We had to skip some of the excursions as they were mostly walking and with bad knees and COPD we couldn’t enjoy. Others we were able to go along and enjoy even though we couldn’t keep up with the group. Headsets provided allowed us to hear our guide from a reasonable distance. Avalon handled all of our travel arrangements as well as before and after hotel arrangements and transfers to and from airport. All went smoothly. Unfortunately we did not realize that Amsterdam was such a huge airport with hardly any accommodations for folks needing assistance walking. Perhaps if we had made requests ahead of time something could have been provided. Read Less

We choose this cruise to be able to see as much as possible while in Europe. Everyone on the ship was very accommodating to all types of passengers. I think we all would agree that we were very fortunate to have an awesome cruise director, Danielle. But it doesn’t stop there, from housekeeping to dining room staff to bartenders I mean everyone was great. The ship is in tiptop shape and the rooms are roomy enough with fantastic views. As we did cruise three different rivers we had an opportunity to see other cruise lines along the way and personally we are super glad that we chose Avalon not only from the ships appearance but also from the number of people on board seemed to be less than others. Onboard entertainment was varied and our cruise director did a great job of bringing in special guest. The on shore excursions were mostly good sometimes tour guides would spend a little bit too much time with history but that is to be expected. Oh and did I mention the castles! Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the interactive events, Bike Riding, hiking, wine tasting in a cave, wine tasting and hiking, wine tasting and bike riding, helicopter ride over the South of France visiting the enchanting port cities along the Rhone River. Also because of the ship size there was an intimate # of guests on the cruise. I met some really incredible people I know call friends. The off ship excursions were wonderful. Experiencing activities that I would not have access to with out being on this marvelous cruise. Bike Riding to the Salt Marshes and viewing the Birds in the Sanctuary there. Bike riding to Pont du Gard then wine tasting, Kayaking and canoeing was so refreshing! Visiting the Chateau Montmfia, taking a tour of their facilities and seeing the surrounding countryside was magical. Hiking up Le Hermitage and more wine tasting, Chateau Pont de nuef and more wine tasting, Hiking into an underground cave and more wine tasting!! Having the opportunity to paint in the Van Gogh style in a studio in Arles was as if i was channeling my inner child. Traveling through the locks on the Rhone with our Captain was a remarkable feat! The food on the ship was delicious and there was always a varied selection. The service was outstanding, the staff would not let you lift a finger. They say to our every need. They were all very friendly and genuine. Our cabin was very comfortable and had full sliding windows so we could enjoy the view while sailing. Our room was always put in order and the beds turned down when we wished to retire. For these reasons and many more I would go again and highly recommend Avalon Cruises. Thank you for such a memorable visit!! Read Less

This is the way to travel. Everything taken care of, great friendly and hard working staff. Amazing crew guiding the ship, excellent tour director and unbelievable chef. Food so good it could have been a foody cruise. Very good selection of stops and gorgeous scenery. The Vista is a beautiful and clean ship that was a pleasure to be aboard. We are sold on this as as a way to discover a region, and look forward to our next opportunity to do so. Highly recommend Avalon for river cruising. Embarking and disembarking was flawless and removed any stress from the whole experience. Cabins were comfortable and very well maintained. Tour guides arranged by tour direct or were knowledge able and informative. The cruise is so much more than cruising, as you get the scenery, history, culture and a true experience like no other. The ship it was built in 2012 and it still looked brand new, our cabin was spacious and well equipped. We arrived on 12 July 2019 and checked into the Movenpick Hotel, Amsterdam City Center, the next morning to Breakfast and finally closed up all our bags ready to board the Avalon Vista to get settled. We had breakfast and prep for our Amsterdam Canal Cruse plus a walking tour, every day there was tours to a lot of the sights. The meals that were provided were very delicious, for those that didn't want a large meal there was a small were served in the Panorama Lounge, it was also the location for all the briefings for the next day’s activities and music/dancing. Each day was filled with tours provided by the cruise lines or optional fee. There were never wants for service because what you might want it was provided. The ports and shore excursions were very well arranged and informative. We know that it takes a lot of planning but the only disappointment was the day of disembarkment from the ship would we would like a mini tour of Basel. This was our first trip on a long ship but it won't be our last because we truly enjoyed it. Read Less

We choose this cruise line based upon square footage of staterooms and floor to ceiling windows. Also , we liked the smaller ship capacity. This was an excellent cruise from beginning to end. Staff from cruise director to housekeeping to wait staff were professional and courteous. There was always a variety of hot and cold foods served daily. Although the overall quality of the food was good, not great, the dining experience was excellent. It was also worry free to have excursions paid for as well as wine service included in lunch and dinner. I only experienced Tea Time once, but that was lovely as well. I needed to see a doctor while on the cruise and the Cruise Director could not have been more helpful, and again professional. The nightly entertainment after dinner was always a fun way to end each evening. I would have loved to have taken advantage of the Recreational activities offered such as Zumba, Yoga and a bike excursions but was honestly too tired from the days activities. Read Less

Right from check-in at Linz to check-out at Budapest, everything was absolutely perfect. It was our first river cruise and it turned out to much more than our expectations. The ship was quite big with a capacity of about 160 guests, though there were only 106. The panorama suite was very good with full glass window. The bar, coffee room and restaurant were top class. The gym was too small with no view at all. The best part of the ship was top deck. The view from there was amazing. They had different type of shore excursions at every port for guests with different taste, and everyone enjoyed it. Being vegetarian the food was a little problem. The lunch used to be buffet which was alright. They used to repeat few things but there was no problem as such. The problem was sit out dinner where it was set menu, where nothing could be done if you don't like your dish. The management should pay little more attention on vegetarian menu. The service was absolutely impeccable. The restaurant stewards, tour director, housekeeping and fitness trainer, everyone was too good. It really deserves 5 stars !! Read Less

I would definitely recommend Avalon Cruise Seine River Cruise! I have always wanted to see the Beaches at Normandy & the American Cemetery, being there on the 4th of July made it even more special. That morning our dining area was decorated for the 4th of July - very thoughtful - the chef even made us a flag cake for dessert that night! Because of my budget, I chose the least expensive cabin & it was perfect - plenty of room - I didn't care about the view because I could go on deck for the view. The ship was immaculate, the food was delicious and the crew spoiled us. Gail was our cruise director - she was excellent! The evening entertainment was great - different every night, covering all interests. I really appreciated all of the crew members who helped to spoil us & kept us laughing! The group who served us both in the dining room & the bar are very hard workers & I want to acknowledge all of them. The transfers went very smoothly. I liked all of the excursions & the tour guides were very knowledgeable & proud of the cities we toured. I just can't say enough about this trip! I would do it again. I would recommend 2 days in Paris either before or after the cruise. I would NOT recommend staying at eh Pullman Hotel! It was very clean but the staff their was rude & less than helpful. Read Less

Usually, river cruises are marketed for older people. We are in our 30s, but wanted to try it anyway. It doesn't disappoint! We arrived a day before to explore the city (Amsterdam) and the hotel provided was great. Transfers were included and were smooth, without complications. The ship is built like a hotel, very comfortable and everything is accessible. Food was excellent, even during the breakfast and lunch buffets. The flexibility on the activities for the trip was what I liked the most. You can go on the included excursions, add additional excursions, go on your own or stay and chill on the ship. The service was 5-stars and we were treated with courtesy and respect by everyone from the crew. I would recommend this trip to anyone. Read Less

I had never cruised on the Rhine before, and I sell a lot of Avalon river cruises, so I thought it was time to experience one of the most popular river cruises for myself. I did the Danube last year with Avalon, and the more I experience Avalon river cruising, the easier it is for me to sell it to customers who contact me. Just wanted to let you know that my friend and I had an INCREDIBLE and AMAZING experience our our Rhine cruise September 29 - October 6. I love selling Avalon, and after two fabulous cruise experiences for myself (one on Danube in 2017 and now this one on the Rhine), it makes it easier for me to relate to my customers better and give them first hand knowledge about what they can expect when they book an Avalon river cruise with me. The crew on the Avalon Tranquility II this year (and the Avalon Panorama last year), as always, was amazing! I even had the same cruise director, Stefano, on both of my cruises. He is exceptionally good at what he does. I need to pass along this story about what happened to me on this cruise: October 1, 2018, my postings on Facebook: I have had major dental work all year. Two months ago 3 Crowns put on the lower right. All was fine until a couple days ago, the tooth in front of the 3 new molar Crowns started to hurt a bit. By yesterday it was painful and sore jaw. No dentists open in AMS on Sat or Sun. Sailed for Cologne yesterday afternoon. Tylenol helped the pain last night. Woke up with swollen glands on the right and now my thyroid is swollen. So this morning- Our wonderful cruise director, Stefano, who is fluent in German, called a dentist in Cologne this morning. I have an appointment in an hour. I just want some antibiotics until I can get back home to Venice. *************** Dental update - Stefano walked with me to the dental office; translated in German to the receptionist, and translated their patient form so I could fill it out. I love him for that! I love German dentists not only that I love how little they charge as the same procedure in the states would probably cost me $1000 they only charge me €164 but a very complete treatment- Dr. did an exam he took an x-ray, drilled a hole in the tooth, did a root canal to clean out the infection and said that it was draining pus had to leave a hole in the tooth gave me an antibiotic prescription and told me how to get to the pharmacy to fill the prescription, and gave me a liquid anti-septic that I can use to spray in the tooth three times a day with the syringes he gave me With the doctor and his staff‘s limited English google translate and a translate program he had on his dental office computer we got along just fine. He was very competent and pain-free and I certainly hope that when the numbness wears off that it doesn’t hurt any longer he said the swelling will go down in two days, Clean it three times a day take my antibiotics two times a day and go see my dentist when I get back Read Less

Always wanted to cruise the Danube. River was low so we had to do a bus for the first 3 days, missing the Nuremberg tour, which wasn't a big deal because we arrived there a day early and explored the old city by ourselves. Avalon made up for it by giving us the Vienna concert complimentary. The ship was great, very comfortable. We really enjoyed the food and the service. The wine tasting excursion in Budapest was disappointing, but that is the only real complaint we had. Avalon seems very well organized and communicative. Very professional. One thing we really like was the intimacy of the cruise. The river cruise ships are understandably small as ships go, with room for about 160 passengers on our ship. That gave us a great opportunity to meet folks and get together with them routinely. We traveled by ourselves, not with friends we already knew, and met some really wonderful people. Loved Regensberg and Passau. Vienna is spectacular, but almost overwhelming in scope. The concert there is a must do, especially if you love classical music. The night lights tour in Budapest is also a must. Truly spectacular. We will definitely do another cruise with Avalon. Read Less

The cruise went to area in Europe we wanted to see. Traveled to 7 countries in 21 days. First cruise with Avalon but it will not be our last. Everyone was very accommodating. The dining was exceptional. The hotels were all 5 star, could not have been more enjoyable. The overall trip was a once in a life time experience. Every day was a new adventure. Our only concern was the low water levels and the inability of the ship to complete the trip. We had to spend 1 night off the ship but Avalon compensated us very generously with a credit for the night after they paid for the hotel cost. Can not think of anything we would change or do differently. The side trips were a lot of fun and very interesting. We will recommend Avalon to all our friends. We have traveled on many different cruise lines and Avalon ranks near the top. The only recommendation we would make is to offer Business class air travel as an option. Read Less

We only had 7 nights of our 15 day cruise due to low water levels which was disappointing, however Avalon did everything possible to still make this a fantastic trip. Our cruise director was exceptional in every way. We did lose some free time as we had to bus between towns. Hotel accommodation was always very good. We also met some wonderful people in our early 60’s age group. Cleanliness and service whilst on board was fantastic as was on-board entertainment. Cabins are beautifully quiet, well appointed and spacious. Some of the walking tours whilst very interesting were a little long-winded and didn’t leave enough time for a good look around. However these are not compulsory. We feel Avalon handled a very difficult situation in the best possible way. We were given lunch money where appropriate on the bus section of the trip. As I mentioned while disappointed you can’t argue with nature and sometimes in life you just have to roll with it. Read Less

Our grandparents took me and my sister on this cruise. This was our first Avalon Waterways cruise. The overall experience on the cruise was very good! Some of the shore excursions were rushed though. The restaurant food was delicious and there were many options. All of the staff were excellent. Both the embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. Our cruise director did a great job of keeping us informed and, when the train to Paris was on strike, arranged bus transportation. We were also impressed with Pretrip information packet we received that covered everything we needed to know before the trip. We also scheduled transfers from Nice to Monaco and from Paris to CDG Airport and they were on time. We also enjoyed having time in Monte Carlo at the beginning and Paris at the end of the cruise. Historically interesting sites, beautiful scenery and knowledgeable guides really added to the enjoyment. There were plenty of excursion options so while it made choosing one difficult at times, it meant there was something for everyone. The events with Diana Gabaldon were well organized and thoughtfully planned. These were particularly enjoyable for us fans. Diana herself was very gracious and approachable. Overall I really enjoyed my cruise. The service on the ship was excellent, the staff is extremely well trained and went out of their way to make the cruise as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I also really loved the food. I am a vegatarian and there were plenty of options for me, but if I did not like the options, the chef was more then willing to cook up something just for me. The cabin was excellent as well and the ship overall was very nice. The entertainment they had was excellent, but I wish they had a bit more during our cruise but I understand you can only have so much on a small ship. The only suggestions I would make are as follows: My cabin was on the 2nd deck and when we were docked my window was right at the dock level, so if I had my window all the way open and there was anyone walking or standing on the dock or shore, it was a little too close for comfort. I would recommend a room on the upper deck. On the 14 day cruise there was ALOT of down time and ALOT of locks on the Main river and the canal. If you want to have a good amount of time to just sit and relax and read a book, then this would be for you. There is not that much scenery on these long streches of river and you can spend alot of time waiting to go into the locks and while you are in the locks. I would do the Danube and Rhine separately if I had to do it again. Oh, also, the upper deck was shut down for 7 days of the trip, so you had limited outdoor space to sit out and enjoy. Oh, finally I would start in Budapest instead of Amsterdam if I had to do it over again. Read Less
