Overall I really enjoyed my cruise. The service on the ship was excellent, the staff is extremely well trained and went out of their way to make the cruise as smooth and enjoyable as possible. I also really loved the food. I am a vegatarian and there were plenty of options for me, but if I did not like the options, the chef was more then willing to cook up something just for me. The cabin was excellent as well and the ship overall was very nice. The entertainment they had was excellent, but I wish they had a bit more during our cruise but I understand you can only have so much on a small ship. The only suggestions I would make are as follows: My cabin was on the 2nd deck and when we were docked my window was right at the dock level, so if I had my window all the way open and there was anyone walking or standing on the dock or shore, it was a little too close for comfort. I would recommend a room on the upper deck. On the 14 day cruise there was ALOT of down time and ALOT of locks on the Main river and the canal. If you want to have a good amount of time to just sit and relax and read a book, then this would be for you. There is not that much scenery on these long streches of river and you can spend alot of time waiting to go into the locks and while you are in the locks. I would do the Danube and Rhine separately if I had to do it again. Oh, also, the upper deck was shut down for 7 days of the trip, so you had limited outdoor space to sit out and enjoy. Oh, finally I would start in Budapest instead of Amsterdam if I had to do it over again. Read Less

Great staff and knowledgeable... - Very well thought out ship of space and still be "simple elegant" style - Cruise director "Tony" was awesome - Food was well matched to the region along with wines - each of the offered activities where well planned and informative Very enjoyable trip, great opportunists to see the region with out lots of travel time moving from hotel to hotel - Avalon is a "first class" run business at a great price value. These River Boats are great for adult family getaways with activities provided along with time to reconnect with family members. If traveling alone or with couples the staff does a great job of having everyone feel welcome. Anyone looking at these trips need to remember to book in advance as trips sell out quickly. Traveling on river ships, allows a great way to see the the true European Cities and experience the culture. We chose Avalon on the advice of our travel agent as she had previous travel with them. We were on the Tranquility II from Amsterdam to Basel. The ship itself was in excellent shape. We had 118 guests with a staff of about 40. All the staff were friendly knowledgeable and and made each of our days enjoyable. The food was varied and we prepared and we were so impressed by their attention to some dietary needs of passengers on the ship. We loved our cabin and our wall of windows. The captain was kind enough to show us his bridge and explain some of the workings of the ship, especially as we went through locks. The on board entertainment , both music and the presentation from the Herr family about the Cuckoo clocks. The organization of the shore excursions was excellent and the tour guides some of the best we have ever had. We traveled as 2 couples. They loved it as well. We would definitely use Avalon again. Friends who have had very positive experiences with Avalon Waterways, highly recommended it to us. It was our first and all our experiences exceeded our expectations. The crew, each one, was extremely efficient, courteous, and especially friendly to the guests which, I must say, were a delight to meet and great to become friends and socialize with. A plus was the knowledgeable cruise director and his meticulous attention to detail, schedules, and in simply directing everyone to where they should be at any given time and in a timely way. What a guy he is! Also, the tour guides were knowledgeable about the various venues we visited. The food served in the lounge and in the dining room was excellent, as well as the friendly ship's company who cooked and served the guests. No complaint or mistake, if any, went uncorrected as far as we know. I might add that the musical entertainment that was presented on the vessel was a pleasant and unexpected plus. The berthing was perfecto. Comfortable, very accommodating, and with marvelous riverside scenery. We are looking forward our booking another river cruise with Avalon Waterways. Our big and heart-felt thanks for making our vacation one of the best ever. Read Less

Something totally different from a standard ocean cruise -- Christmas markets throughout Europe in the winter! Excellent cruise overall, with great food, friendly service and a clean, new ship in perfect shape -- even in the face of rainy weather in the 40s. Got to meet a lot of interesting people from around the world. The ports were fascinating, beautiful and the excursions uniformly first-rate, interesting and understandable. One of the highlights was the cruise director, who gave nightly summaries of upcoming ports and kept us informed about things to expect in the day(s) ahead. She was a natural comedienne as well -- intelligent, articulate, very funny, very friendly and great one-on-one as well as in front of the entire passenger contingent. Clearly professionalism across the board is valued among the crew, and the cruise director stood out as being far superior to any counterpart on the 30 or so ocean cruises that we have taken. Even the captain was accessible and willing to engage guests throughout the week. Oh, and the food and wine were superb! I would recommend this cruise line without hesitation! Read Less

From the planning stage to the end of the cruise this has been a great experience. Planning was a breeze on the website and staff was very helpful when we had questions or needed to make changes. My husband has lived abroad in the past but this was my first trip to Europe. And what a way to be introduced! We scheduled extra days before and after the cruise so we spent those days in the Movenpick hotels - very nice! Very well organized at the hotel for travel to embarkation port. Once we arrived at the ship, everyone was well organized and had our luggage to our rooms very quickly and in good order. The ship was beautiful, clean, and well appointed in every way. Our cabin was wonderful - very modern and up to date - granite countertops in the bath area and the L'Occitane toiletries were so nice. The staff could not have been more helpful - they were all friendly, courteous, and polite. The dining was excellent - so many choices and such good food!! Every meal was fresh and delicious. There were always some little tidbits out if you wanted a snack as well as coffee, tea, or juice. And don't forget tea time - oh my goodness - try not to miss afternoon tea. We did eat off of the ship a couple of times and also brought back some sweets from several bakeries - that was also a feast for the taste buds! Don't miss some of the local bakeries - you will be truly sorry if you do. The on board entertainment was well worth the time in the evening if you are not out wandering the streets of some of the quaintest little cities in the country. The evening meetings with our cruise director, Tony, were very informative but also a lot of fun. He was so helpful when we had questions about excursions or what to do and see in our spare time. And speaking of excursions - there were quite a few choices and it was very hard to make a decision when it came time to sign up. Once we hit port we were off and running with our guides! Every guide that we had was very knowledgeable of the local history and fun things do. They were also very personable and pleasant to spend time with. When we had spare time they were able to give us pointers on some places to see and how to get there. The history, the shopping, the people were amazing and the fall colors in the countryside were just breathtaking. The rivers, mountains, industry, museums, castles, churches and cathedrals are so beautiful and full of history - how can you go wrong with a trip like this?! Leaving was really a sad day - had to say goodbye to new friends and great crew! All was so organized and went so smoothly - I was amazed at the ease of departure - they arranged for shuttle to our hotel even though it was just a short distance away. It was raining that morning so I was thankful for the ride. It was such a great trip - I would do it again tomorrow!! Read Less

My brother took care of the booking. He did much research on the Tour line as to cost, time of year and experiences offered and the decision to go with Avalon was made. As far as my wife and I are concerned it was truly a great decision! We had options as to the Fall Wine Tour or the Christmas Market Cruise. The Danube Wine Cruise was selected. It was the first cruise for my wife and me. We both had an extraordinary time. From Budapest to Prague and all the other ports of call it was a great time. The activities were numerous, you could do as much or as little as you wanted. Great accommodations land side were excellent. The Intercontinental in Budapest was much more than we expected. The city itself so vibrant and packed with history. Probably could've spent a week there. Leaving Budapest we boarded the Avalon Vista with approximately 160 other passengers to begin the Danube Adventure. The accommodations, the meals, the planned activities were extremely enjoyable. But let's face it. the cruise would only be as good as the crew on the ship. From the wait staff, Gabor, Tonya and all the others, to house keeping, they did a great job in making our experiences memorable ones. The places visited Vienna, Regensburg, Nuremburg and the other optional tours ie. Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic were truly fascinating. The final destination being Prague, truly a jewel, we were able to experience the local culture, the history of the city and Czech cuisine, wonderful. I would certainly be remiss in not mentioning our Cruise Guide, Nancy, extremely personable, accommodating and knowledgeable. She took care of every detail of the trip from when we arrived until our departure from Prague. We would love to take another Avalon cruise. Read Less

I was invited by a friend who wanted to try river cruising. This had never been on my radar but it was worth every penny and more. At first glance, the ship is not an eye catcher. Someone on our bus likened it to a 1970s Holiday Inn. But, that being said, stepping onboard, revealed our home for the next 10 days. Oh boy. The rooms were roomier than I expected. Two twins with end tables so you could walk around the beds. Closet for hanging but not much drawer space. We used our luggage under the beds for incidentals and worked out great. The room was sparklingly clean and kept that way every day. The meals were diverse and yummy. Local fare as we cruised downriver. We had a 'port talk' every evening where our cruise director, Bart, explained what the next day would bring us. I must toot the horn of Bart. I asked him if he knew where a Harley Davidson dealer was in Regensberg. Perfect souvenir for the hubby! He not only knew where it was but offered to go there and buy a shirt for me as it was not near where out tour for the day was. I asked him the next day if he had a chance to go there and he immediately handed me a perfect shirt. I paid him and thought about how lucky that he was our cruise director. He stopped me when we got to Budapest and handed me a map with the route highlighted to another HD dealer in Budapest. I thought that was above and beyond and really appreciate that Avalon employs such great guys. There were some entertainers that boarded the ship in some ports and were truly enjoyable and entertaining evenings. Read Less

Wow, greeted with champagne, h, ow good is that. My advice to travelers is get to Paris a day early so you are not stressed by the travel. They pick you up at the Airport, they take your luggage, bring you to a staging place ( Hotel Pullman) and you wait several hours to take the bus to the meals were( for a cruise ship) bathroom. Real live orchids, a window wall that opens to a French Balcony. A very comfortable bed. We went to the lounge to here Caty our cruise director, tell us about the ship, the one time emergency drill and other features. Everybody loved Caty, everyday and evening she was there for our concerns and questions, thank you. We found out that we had 95 people cruising on the Tapestry II, not a lot when we have been on cruise ships with thousands. Our dining experience was fantastic, Gabriel our server made sure our wine glasses were full, take a drink and he would top it off. Thank you Gabriel for taking such good care of us. Just to mention, when we came on board the Matrei d asked if anyone had allergies, my wife is allergic to shell fish, informed him and at every meal he stopped by to see what she ordered. Caring and considering the welfare of the guests made us feel we made the right choice. Hard to be on a very personal cruise and not make new friends, we were grateful to the many new ones we made. The tours are many and fun, from the American cemetery at Normandy, Van Gogh, Monet, Paris and the many others we took, very interesting and knowledgeable guides. Would do it again. Thanks to the Captain for his singing New York, New York in French. Read Less

Objective was to see Germany and picturesque river castes up close. Guides were very knowledgeable and understandable! We want to take another river cruise, maybe in England and Scotland, and to finish our German river cruise on other rivers. Very restful and relaxing. Would like to be able to see ahead in addition to seeing alongside. Would like a "captain's chair" or two in the room. Food and service was excellent with a great variety (but the food labels were too small). Port villages were small clean neat picturesque friendly and easy to walk around with no danger of getting lost or left behind, because the boat and river were so near. A simple map was provided each morning of the town we would be exploring that day. We took a picture of it each day to help us identify the locations of the pictures we took when we got home. Smaller passenger numbers made embarkation and debarkation easy simple and quick. It was also easy to recognize fellow passengers on shore for making acquaintances, sharing stories, and making sure you were among friends and in the right place. This was our 50th wedding anniversary, and the crew and captain made a special presentation of cake, champagne, music, and song at the front of the main window in the dining room! Very special surprise! Read Less

It was great to be in good company even though we were travelling alone. Our room was amazing with the panoramic balcony! Imagine lying in bed with open curtains watching picturesque scene after scene pass by as the ship slowly navigates the Seine. We only did that one day but it was worth it! Neither of us had ever been to France and were very pleased with the service and assistance from the entire crew! Dietary preferences were stated during the first day and we had to ask for "Cheating" to be allowed due the genuine care of the dining staff. We wanted to visit Eastern Europe as we heard the scenery was beautiful. We were not disappointed. We felt Avalon Waterways did a great job in every aspect of the trip. It was an opera cruise, and we were not really into opera, but it was great. A concert in Vienna was icing on the cake. The cruise director ( Mr. Pinter) was very knowledgeable and worked very hard to make the cruise an enjoyable trip for everyone. His port talks were informative and a little humorous. The servers in the restaurant were very friendly and extremely efficient. They were there anytime we needed them. We especially enjoyed Puji who was really great. Avi was the steward for our cabin, and he had our room, it seemed, ready every time we returned. He also greeted us in the hallway the first day and after by our first names which impressed us. It was 4am in the morning. My travel champion was in my driveway right on time. We loaded up my luggage and we were on our way to GRR to catch our United flight for a trip of a life time. We had a 10 hour lay over in Chicago and a 9 hour flight from ORD to CDG. Upon arriving in Paris, an Avalon Rep. was standing by the baggage claim, holding an Avalon sign. We were directed to the area where we would be picked up for our transfer to the hotel. This went very smooth. Our transfer took place on a very nice, newer, comfortable, air conditioned, spacious, clean, bus. Needless to say, we were exhausted when we got to the hotel. I googled the two Paris hotels listed in the brochure before our departure. I really liked one over the other. I was thrilled to see the Hotel du Collectionneur Arc de Triomphe was where we would be staying. This hotel looked beautiful online and was everything I hoped it would be. It is a 4-5 star hotel in an excellent location for shopping, dining or taking an evening stroll. It felt safe during our evening walk to a local restaurant. There was an excellent bakery and convenient grocery store just a few blocks from the hotel. After resting for a couple of hours, it was now time to meet our cruise director and sign up for any excursions we might have wanted to go on but had not sigh up for. Our Cruise Director, Katy Huyskens was excellent. She always had a big smile to greet us with and ready to give helpful advise. The next morning, after a much needed good night sleep, on a very comfortable bed, we had a delicious breakfast to wake up to that was included. After breakfast, we went on a very informative Paris City Tour Excursion that was included. We learned a lot about Paris. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable. In the afternoon, we took a Versailles Tour. I did my homework before the trip and was sure this was an excursion not to miss and I was right. In the evening, we went to see the show Lido. All the excursions we went on were excellent. The next day, in the afternoon, we took a high speed train to Luxembourg, then took a motorcoach to Remich to board the Avalon Artistry II Ship. As we were boarding the ship, we were greeted by the crew with warm welcome smiling faces. The ship was beautiful, our cabin was so inviting I didn't care to leave it. The minute we walked into our cabin we were in awe with the ceiling to floor, wall to wall French Balcony window view, which was truly amazing. I loved the bathroom in our cabin too. It was beautiful and so spacious. The views from our cabin were breath taking. We had sunny days with 60 degree temperatures. Taking in the gorgeous scenery of vineyards, the Moselle and Rhine River, watching the swans, ducks and heron float so peacefully near the edge of the river bank. The vibrant colorful fall colors on the trees covering the from our cabin window were truly a memory I hope last a life time. I did take a lot of pictures from our cabin to help keep that memory from fading. Doing a cruise with a theme was a lot of fun and very educational. Loved going to the vineyards, learning all about the wine industry and tasting the different wines. The food on the ship was excellent. At dinner it was an endless glass of wine, beer and soda. The waiters were always right there to accommodate all of our wants and needs. The service was outstanding. The workers worked so hard to keep all the guest happy and content. After dinner, it was a great time to sit back in the lounge, have a drink, listen to music and socialize with other guests. The entertainment at night was very enjoyable. The beauty of doing a river cruise is there are so fewer people than on the big cruise ships, a lot less walking to get to where you want to go, a much more intimate feeling, excursions are included, it's nice to have a glass of wine with your dinner that's included, you get to know many of the guest and have a close connection with them. I love stopping at all the ports of call verses doing an all inclusive where you are just at that resort for the length of your stay. When doing a big cruise ship cruise, you get hit with the expense of any excursions you my want to do and every drink you order. That can get extremely expensive. If a person is looking for romance on there vacation, I would highly recommend a river cruise. I didn't travel with children and there were no children on our cruise. I would definitely go on another Avalon River Cruise. I didn't want the one I was on to end. I absolutely love river cruising. I will tell everyone thinking of going on a trip to consider taking an Avalon River Cruise. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do an Avalon River Cruise on a Suite Ship. Read Less

Food, excursions, all were top line and the service was great. Loved our waiters at breakfast. We went with 2 other couples as we were celebrating our anniversary and we were all quite impressed with the trip, the ship and the service. LOVED our stop in Bernkastel and Trier and of course Amsterdam. Would only suggest to have more bicycles on the ship in the future and maybe cabin spa services if not enough room for a spa area. Lastly, more all inclusive for wine and beers. Cannot wait to do the next one! Read Less

All the historical events was far away from this hotel and limited the older passengers a problem getting to them.
