Our family decided that this was a very different way for us to spend the Christmas Holiday and we had never been on a river cruise before. We have been to Europe with Globus tours and were very happy with their services then and they lived up to our expectations again. The crew was absolutely wonderful. We have a family member with a gluten issue and the dining staff was at her side each night to advise her of choices on the menu. We loved the choices on the menu at any meal. The cruise director was very informative about every stop we made on the cruise. Our room steward always met us with a warm welcoming smile and kept the room well stocked and clean. Embarking and disembarking were well organized and it was so nice to have a nice hot drink waiting for us when we returned from our tours which were so informative. The only thing that I would have liked to do was actually walk into the Black Forest rather than view it from afar. The ship was very comfortable and easy to navigate around. We especially liked the room at the rear of the ship that had coffee, tea, and always a variety of cookies and chocolates and doughnuts. Read Less

Wonderful cruise. Food was excellent, wine and beer with lunch and dinner was a nice touch. The boat was big enough to not feel confined and small enough to be able to get to use it all. The excursions that came along with the tour were interesting and run by locals. The cruise director worked hard go give us unique experiences. The only bad point - our room repeatedly smelled like cigarettes. Not sure how or why this happened but the room service crew were reluctant to address it. Our sons had their own room on a lower floor. Both were nicely decorated and kept clean throughout the day. Getting on and off the boat was easy. A simple swipe of your room key. Only one day we were the second boat in the harbor and had to walk over and through a different boat to get to shore. The only suggestion, many of the excursions were rushed. It would have been nicer to spend more time at each site. One tip - no need to bring fancy clothes for dinner. As long as you are clean and dressed, things are good. Read Less

I had never been on a river cruise, and had never been to eastern Europe, so this cruise ticked all the boxes for a new adventure. Avalon did not disappoint. The boat was meticulous, I loved that my bed faced the river and I could open my sliding glass door fully, the bathroom was surprisingly big and the marble tile was an unexpected nice feature, the staff were exceptionally friendly, attentive, engaging, and helpful, the food and wine were outstanding (the soups, I'd book another cruise just for the soups! They should seriously make a recipe book just with the soups alone.), our cruise director Tony was delightfully funny and insightful, and our captain made the best of a very low river. No rain in Europe this year did cause our cruise to be adjusted as we went farther North, but Avalon went out of its way to make the adjustments equal or better to the original itinerary, including offering free excursions. Those travelling with me all agreed that the adjustments to our itinerary were better than the original and we were very appreciative at the effort Avalon took to make sure our river cruise experience was exceptional. The guides on the excursions were all very knowledgeable and friendly. The pace of some of the excursions was a tad slow, but as I was the youngest person on the cruise (40s), I understood the pace was designed for the overall group demographic (60s-80s). Would definitely book another Avalon cruise again! Read Less

I chose this cruise based on a recommendation of a family member and the size of the cabin. I was not disappointed. The staff was so friendly. We had a minor accident that needed a doctor and the Cruise Director went with us to each appointment to translate for us. He even adjusted tours to accommodate our appointments. The excursions were so well planned, something for everyone. I, myself, was a "Gentle Walker" and was still able to see most of the sights. We met people from all over the world and had fun getting to know them. The small number of passengers was a great change from the large cruise ships and their thousands. It was really quaint - like family at the end. The food was excellent and the variety and availability was great. I would highly recommend Avalon and look forward to taking another cruise with them in the future... Read Less

I was with my siblings and mom, five of us total. We spent the three extra days in Prague and had a great time exploring. Each day we found new area and less touristy areas to explore. Our cruise director, Hendrick, was very informative. Due to last minute river rising, our cruise itinerary changed. We could not board in Nuremberg. However, Avalon was very accommodating in that we were comped "optional excursion" and our cruise was still a full 7 nights. As with any tour guide, it is hit or miss which one you get. Some were exception, but all were good. We loved the housekeepers and reception staff. The servers were also a joy. We had great conversation and learned much about the life of cruise staffer. The food was great and often we chose to eat on board instead of in town. We had plenty of wine with lunch and dinner. In fact, we had to cover our glass to refuse another pour. Prior to leaving, there was a change in our included airfare. One member in our party was unable to attend due to this change. The member that did not travel has a very bitter taste towards Avalon. However, as the main contact for our group, I have no complaints. Avalon only did what was written in the terms of our booking. And in the end, they even refunded money they did not have to. So for that, I applaud the customer service and management. I hope to travel again in two years and will most likely use Avalon again. Read Less

I chose this trip because my sister, brother-in law, and I got a great Friends and Family discount that we could pass up. The ship was lovely, food excellent, smaller size of ship and total passengers (125) made for an intimate friendly experience. I especially enjoyed having time in Budapest and Prague to explore and relax before and after the cruise portion of the adventure. The shore excursions, embarkation and disembarkation all ran very smoothly. Unfortunately we experienced some flooding issues along the Danube partway into the cruise which prevented being able to travel the entire projected itinerary along the river because of high water levels combined with low bridges. The cruise director Stefano did a remarkable job arranging for alternative transport by bus to the scheduled port cities, with only one exception, an unplanned stop in an alternate town was substituted. All of the stops were interesting and the guides very informative and friendly. The castles and churches were amazing and awe inspiring. The ship provided nightly local entertainment which was great, this also required a lot of additional revising and effort on the part of the ship staff. Because of the flooding we spent more time on buses than would otherwise have been the case which limited some of our time to explore the ports on our own or shop for souvenirs but this could not be helped, and overall we saw a lot of interesting sights. I would consider another Avalon cruise in the future. Read Less

Our family had a fantastic cruise down the Danube in late June / early July. The entire staff of the Avalon Panorama was great. We have highly recommend Avalon to many of our friends who are thinking of maybe taking a cruise. Enjoyed meeting other people from all over the world on the cruise. The staff was very helpful as the service was outstanding. The staff show on the last night was fantastic. Janos Horvath, our cruise director was excellent as he took the time with all the passengers to make them comfortable. Started in Nuremberg, then Regensburg, on to Passau, took side trip to Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, then re-joined the boat at Linz, stopped at the Melk Abbey, viewed the fantastic Wachau Valley, into Vienna, toured downtown Vienna at night, took the side trip to the Schonbrunn Imperial Palace. Enjoyed the Farewell Gala Dinner on the last night on the Panorama with the staff show. Enjoyed walking in downtown Budapest and seeing Castle Buda. My wife's grandparents emigrated from Hungary before WW I, so the trip had family history implications. Enjoyed the great Hungarian meals in Budapest. All of the on-shore excursions had great guides to explain the local history of the cities and sites that we visited. Read Less
