I have worked for 30 years to get my husband to agree to a cruise. He didn’t want those small beds, he couldn’t stand to be below the waterline, he needs fresh air when he sleeps, he gets claustrophobic, he’ll get bored. I heard it for years - enter Viking Ocean Cruises - no rooms below water, all rooms have a private balcony with a large sliding glass door, king size beds, comfortable sized rooms. Viking shot a hole in each of his excuses! We booked the City of Antiquities tour from Athens to Rome departing December 2019. Our booking included airfare, and Viking was amazing at booking the flights that worked for us on our preferred airline. On the arrival day, they met us at the airport promptly and transferred us to the ship. Every single staff member went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Each day in port was filled with activity - we saw ancient Athens and Corinth on day 1 - day 2 we explored ancient Ephesus and saw Turkish rugs made. On Day 3 we docked at Crete, then sailed for 2 and a half days across to Naples where we explored Sorrento and Pompei on day 6, and finished up in Rome on day 7. My husband loved the ship, amenities, restaurants and most of all, the vacation we had together. It was truly the vacation of a lifetime for us! Read Less

We had done a Viking Phine River Cruise 3 years ago and that was wonderful. I didn't want to do an ocean cruise on one of the mega ships, the size of Viking's looked perfect. The level of service and attention we were afforded was beyond compare. Everyone was happy, helpful and acted genuinely glad to see us. They made us feel special. The food on board was the absolute best. Plenty of choices, except near the end I was longing for some simple "fast food" type grub, nothing fancy. The various shore excursions were plentiful and generally well planned and executed. A couple might have tried to cram in one too many stops however. There were at least two where we wished we'd have been given more time (Monte Carlo and Eze Village France in particular). Getting to/from each of the excursions was smooth and easy. Our cabin was plenty spacious and well appointed. The ship itself easy to get around and looked brand new (although we knew it wasn't, Their attention to cleanliness and safety was fantastic). My only knock was against the "resident historian" on board. Tried to listen to a couple of his presentations and he about put me to sleep. Very poor presentation skills. The daily "port talks" were helpful, but were continually interrupted by announcements, etc. rather than stopping them to make the announcements and then restarting where they left off (they talked over each other). The Port talks were canned/pre-recorded. The fact that there were NO children on the cruise was another huge plus. Disney can have them! Given this cruise's focus was on antiquity, most if not all of that would have been lost on them. I'm a history buff, so the subject of many of our shore excursions suited our interests perfectly. However, would I do another ocean cruise? Probably not. We had 36+ hours of pretty rough seas between Crete and Naples (24' crests) where the ship actually bounced a few times. Dramamine to the rescue but pretty well caused me to want to do nothing but sleep. We'll stick to river or train trips I think. The "Viking Band" and vocal group were OK (I'm a fairly hard critic of entertainment having been in the industry myself so I have pretty high expectations and criteria). Most of the time the band looked bored and as a result their music reflected it. The Assistant Cruise Director should have stuck to being just that and not trying to be an entertainer. Seeing a 1st run movie one night on-board was a nice treat. The New Years Eve party on board was nicely done. Read Less

If you are interested in seeing and learning about the Ancient Greek, Roman, and Minoan cultures, this is the cruise for you. Viking offers five star service all the way through along with a good selection of excursions. The food and wine selections are also the very best. Whether eating at The Restaurant, The Chefs Table, or Manfredi’s there is something you will like. There are great alternatives at Mamsens and Wintergarten, as well as the buffet at the World Cafe. The cold plunge pool and dry sauna were also great. We did find that the organization or selection of a couple of the excursions could have been done better, but they were still better than other cruise lines. Also, the entertainment is not the best, but it was still a good time. There were several places on the ship to relax and enjoy a drink, all with a good atmosphere. Torshavn was a nightclub setting with a good selection of Armagnac. Also good drinks and atmosphere at the Pool bar, Explorers Lounge, Aquavit Terrace, and Atrium. Read Less

The Viking people at the hotel were very helpful in helping us with some concerns. The Hilton hotel was beautiful. I do wish we had taken the post cruise extension in Rome! I can't say enough wonderful things about the cruise!!! The ship was absolutely beautiful. The food was delicious. The workers were very helpful and cheerful. The entertainment was great. Loved the thermal spa and the snow grotto. The room (419) was very comfortable. Everything was very clean throughout the ship. The excursions were great. I felt safe everywhere we went. I especially loved the concept of "Adults Only." And yes, embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. Loved the whole time and would return tomorrow if I could!!!! Read Less

Lack of bonhomie among most staff towards passengers, more interested in talking among themselves than interacting with passengers. We got blank stares when asking questions, sometimes a scowl at buffet, missing servers at stations. Felt like we were on training cruise. Entertainment people were lovely. They had many jobs, performed all well, among only ones on board who actually did. The spa was the best thing on ship. My husband & I enjoyed the ice room & cold water bucket. Food was average & boring. Many of the same items in buffet every evening. Specialty restaurants not very special although wait staff was very nice. Oceania is a far better cruise line. All staff were exceedingly friendly & knew everyone’s name within a couple of days. Managed to make a Passover Seder in the middle of the Ocean but Viking couldn’t manage to get an American Mahjongg set in Israel. Won’t travel with them again. Read Less

Our experience with Viking includes 4 prior river trips, so we wanted to try the ocean and see how it compared. For those Viking Veterans who have come to expect a certain standard of service and comfort during river voyages, the ocean (at least on Star) will not disappoint: the ship is clean and well maintained (in fact the crew are often seen working at various maintenance tasks during the cruise); the staterooms are small (as on all ships) but comfortable and the staff are very conscientious and professional in maintaining a clean and serviceable cabin; both the food and service on board are excellent and certainly meet the Viking standards; for my experience, the entertainment aboard was superb, although I must confess I spent most of my time sampling the musical offerings in the Explorer Lounge and sampling the libations (which were also excellent). The major difference between ocean and river cruising is the ocean ports are usually at some distance from the attractions one wants to see, so bus rides (often lengthy) and such are required, whereas on the river the Longships stop in the heart of the city and it is (not always but) usually an easy walk from the ship to points of interest. If you're not prepared for this difference it can be a bit of a distraction from the experience. The excursions were generally good-to-great with a couple of exceptions and that owing to the quality/fluency of the guides - I think Viking missed a couple of real opportunities for interesting excursions but one can't expect them to cover all the possibilities. Overall a superior effort and great value for money. Read Less

This was our first Viking ocean cruise and it was a wonderful experience. The ship is beautiful, staff is great, food and wine were very very good. Shore excursions were very informative and we had great guides for almost every one of their trips. The ship was very comfortable and having a king size bed and a full-size shower with a heated bathroom floor really made it special. Walking around the ship it is very quiet and uncontested. Thoroughly enjoyed the spa with the snow room. Went there three times during our trip. This was a wonderful experience and we will book future Viking ocean cruises. The staff to passenger ratio was excellent. Our room stewards kept the room very tidy and whenever we had a question about anything a staff person responded promptly. Very nice touch was having one of the senior staff see us off on our shore excursions and sometimes being there to meet us as we return. The heated towels upon your return from a short excursion was such a nice touch as well. Read Less

We chose this cruise based on the itinerary, the size of the ship, and the recommendations of friends. We were not disappointed and found that every element exceeded our expectations and left other cruise lines in the dust. The service was superior, the food in all venues was excellent, and the design and décor of the ship itself were exceptional. Our stateroom was immaculate, well-appointed, and spacious, with more than ample storage room for our belongings and luggage. Even the process of embarking and disembarking was handled with a great sense of organization that made those activities as stress-free as possible. Every single staff member was committed to the highest level of cordiality and service, from the cleaning staff to the servers in the restaurants to the officers. They made you feel like their only mission was to provide satisfaction for every passenger. It was like heaven on earth. I know we will book more cruises on Viking as a result. Read Less

First, we chose this cruise because we wanted to visit ports in the Mediterranean and felt we would do better on a tour than alone. Let me add that our MO was to arrange our own travels through other EU countries but Greece and Israel was a little different because of language and cultural differences. We heard a lot of firsthand complimentary reviews about Viking from friends so choosing Viking and the Antiquities cruise really didn't take a lot of consideration. When our friends (who were Viking alumni) presented us with the opportunity, we were quick in our response to join them. Lets start with the ship: the Viking Star was lovely. We loved our cabin and all of the amenities that came with Deluxe Veranda status. Loved the free all-ship internet, heated bathroom floors, down comforter, over-sized bath towels and comfy robes. The room service was beyond reproach; starting with the on-time morning delivery of our breakfast to the evening turn-down while we were at dinner. We couldn't have asked for nicer accommodations or better service! As far as the dining experience, I wouldn't give it an "A" but I would give it a solid "B" as far as quality, taste and selection. For the most part, we ate breakfast in our room; lunch in the World Cafe and dinner in The Restaurant (or Manfredi's or Chef's Table). Breakfast was OK (bacon was always crispy as ordered). Lunch choices were fresh (though the salad bar was somewhat lacking in "diversity" and locale). The dinner menu was nothing special and somewhat predictable. Loved Manfredi's but not Chef's Table. What I can tell you is that the service at all food venues was fabulous! Servers were very attentive and friendly and quick with drink service. Bottom line, food could improve. (BTW, The Restaurant hostess, Ann, was fabulous! She began to expect us every evening at 8:15 and had a lovely window table waiting for us.) Nightly, we did enjoy cocktails before and after dinner. Pricing was fair/reasonable, drinks were generous and, again, service was always excellent. As far as the ports and shore excursions, I have a few mixed feelings. First of all, all of the guides/docents were amazing (except for one in Mykonos; can't remember her name but she was awful!); they were smart (in some cases, brilliant), approachable and excellent storytellers. My biggest complaint about the tours is that we didn't know what to expect re the time on the bus; we would have appreciated a heads up re the time it took to get from one place to another. Also, the 12-hour tour days, demanded more than just a bottle of water and lunch. If possible, I would suggest a glass of wine and some nuts/fruit for trips that go beyond 5pm. I would also suggest a little less aggressive agenda for the time in Israel; the preference would have been two days in Jerusalem and two days in Haifa. Finally, with regard to the extension tour in Athens, WOW! Our tour guide, Barbara, was fabulous! We spent three days in her company and her guiding was excellent! We also have nothing but good things to say about our hotel (in Athens). The room, food and location was five-star! We did have some "issues" with our air travel. We chose to upgrade to First Class and the people who we were routed to for reservation assistance were not always the most helpful. In closing, would we go again? YES! We are giving serious consideration to the Americas/Caribbean cruise next Dec. There was also mention of a Mississippi River cruise that interested us. Finally, if you could make Cuba happen for US residents, we would sign up in a heartbeat. Thank you for the memories! Read Less

We ate at The Restaurant was good. As was The Chef table. Manifrdis was ok. The Explorer bar was our favorite! Great bartenders and view! We felt service was slow even with so many employees mulling around. Many times we would have to go find someone. Excursions were excellent, though places were extremely crowded especially Dubrovnik. Too many cruise ships allowed at a time so guided tended to rush you through so other guides could get in. We would of signed up for our third cruise but thought down payment was high. We want to go on another river cruise possibly Portugal/Spain. Hopefully in 2 years. We loved the river cruise Paris to Zurich 2 years ago. More personal. See you in 2 years Viking! Read Less

We chose this cruise because we loved the Riverboat cruise that we took back in 2017 and though we would try the ocean line. The food and service was amazing -- rooms were lovely -- and I enjoyed the free wi-fi The entertainment is geared to an older crowd - there wasn't enough entertainment and with a lot of wasted space on the ship -- I felt there should have been more to choose from. Spent most of my time watching TV in the room. One of the most popular ports was missed due to weather -- not the ships fault -- but we didn't get any extra time at any other port -- The included excursions were very boring and the timing left you with no time to do any other ones -- which was extremely disappointing - because the included excursions with the Riverboat cruise were amazing -- Finally we traveled with a group of people -- which 6 of us was escorted to the airport when it was time to leave -- but the last person traveling with us was told to leave an hour past us - then was just left to find her own way to the airport - having to take a train and a bus - not knowing where she was going and was extremely upset -- In closing - I will never travel with Viking Ocean line again - This was the most I have ever paid for a vacation and was left very underwhelmed Read Less

I wasnt quite sure what to expect for our Viking Star Ocean voyage after six previous Viking river cruises. Needless to say I was extremely pleased. Everything about the ship from our 3rd deck veranda stateroom to the excellent service and friendly crew was great. You would never know that the ship had over 600 passengers aboard as there was plenty of space to relax and enjoy being not on a crowded larger cruise ship. Our shore excursions more often than not had superb guides, we chose to take several extra charge trips and are glad we did. The weather, except for the very first day, was spectacular. Unfortunately, the winds off of Santorini were too high to allow tenders to be used so we missed that trip. Food aboard the Viking Star was always good, ranging from excellent (Mamsens and Manfredi) to very good choices at the breakfast and lunch buffets. The main dining room was also usually good, but got extremely noisy after 730 pm. I used the very large fitness center a couple of times and we certainly were surprised by the free laundry room and 24 hour room service. Read Less

The atmosphere, the food, wine, shore excursions, on board activities, it was all marvelous. With only 930 passengers, one never felt crowded and we never had to wait for a table or any type of service. The crew was super professional, courteous and friendly. They helped to create an atmosphere wherein it was easy to make friends with fellow passengers. The cabin design was streamlined and gave a sense of space. Having all cabins with balconies is a huge bonus. Having room service breakfast on our balcony a couple of time was a lovely luxury. The staff in all the restaurants, bars and spa were fabulous. We attended several shows, all of which were fun and entertaining. We have already booked our next Viking Ocean cruise and can't wait for it. Thank you Viking! Read Less

The cruise was in a single word- superb. The ship is well maintained. The service was unbelievable. The cabin was well appointed and well maintained by a professional and polite staff. The food was "to die for" and the wine selection outstanding. The steak at Manfredi's restaurant is probably the best piece of meat we have ever had. The Chief Table, The Restaurant, World Cafe, and Pool Grill were so good, it was hard to decide where to go. Tea time was grand- service was outstanding and the selection of teas and snacks equaled the service. We really enjoyed the thermal spa, steam room, snow room, hot tub, and wooden bucket with cold water. The fitness room was very good and the 1/4 mile track on the 2nd deck much appreciated. The excursions offered diverse experiences. We enjoyed the ones that included meals and drinks. We spent two days in Athens before getting on the ship- the hotel and Viking support was outstanding. Cannot say enough about the crew and staff- their sole focus is passenger satisfaction in all facets of the cruise. Read Less

Wanted to try Viking Ocean after having enjoyed their river cruise but when the captain chose to not stop at Santorini due to high winds even though the Holland America ship did stop I decided that I would probably not choose Viking Ocean again. The rest of the cruise was more enjoyable and the service like on most cruise ships was superb. The ship was well laid out and our cabin was quite spacious. We really enjoyed the explorer lounge and the bartender there. There was nothing exceptional about the entertainment. The included shore excursions we generally nice but the viator excursions we booked were outstanding. My favorite port was Koper, Slovenia where we booked an excursion through Viator and visited the castle and cave. We wanted a small group and it tuned out to be just the two of us and our guide and was far beyond our expectations. One of the main reasons I booked this cruise was to tour the ancient Akrotiri ruins which didn't happen as the Captain felt the wind was too high for all the old folks onboard. He warned us the night before that this was likely to be the case but rather than have an alternate port chose to go there and then steam right by allowing us to wave at the Holland America ship that was able to stop. We especially loved Manfredis restaurant, but we enjoyed the Chefs Table too although we selected our menu carefully because not all of them appealed to us. The Restaurant was consistently high standard, Mamsens deli has a limited selection but us great for a simple breakfast or lunch. There are bars everywhere so you don’t have to go far for a drink. The Explorers Lounge bar was our favourite spot because of the stunning views. There is a main pool with covered and uncovered loungers and sofa style seating, and and aft infinity pool with loungers that shares space with the Aquavit terrace. We hung out at the aft pool. The ship, the crew, the food, the overall experience was just amazing! There are not enough words to describe how wonderful our trip was. We were first time cruisers and we cannot wait to do another. In fact, we signed up for a river cruise while on board. The crew were very attentive and catered to our every wish. The room was very comfortable and quiet too. The dining was simply terrific! There was a variety of food to choose from every day and all day if you desired. The 24 hour room service on board was a wonderful treat for us when I did not want to get up and get ready to go to breakfast. NOTE: I do wish there were gluten free desserts readily available, but I did manage just fine. The entertainment was okay. I expected better, but we did not go on this cruise just to be entertained. The Cruise Director Jenna was the best singer of all of the singers on board. The musicians however were top notch. We loved that the excursions were included, but wished some of them were more than just a walking tour of the port town. We would have liked more INCLUDED historical excursions in Venice, Messina & Sicily. We did pay extra for some excursions in order to see the historical sites. Would we go again? You bet! This was our third consecutive, annual cruise with Viking. Having enjoyed several of their river cruises, we decided upon an ocean voyage this year, in part because we were taking our two "under 30" ages kids. Viking ocean cruises offer more onboard than do their river going sisters and thought the additional options would be more suited to their interests than the rather sedate life on a river cruise. As we expected, the cruise was wonderful and one all of us will always remember. The itinerary was selected for its historical and cultural value. The ship embarked in Athens, but, since Viking offers no excursions before boarding, we booked a private company to pick us up at the airport, provide us with a personalized tour, and deliver us to the ship in time to sail. Regrettably, flight delays caused us to miss the (expensive) Athens tour and almost the ship itself. Although the flight delays were no fault of Viking, Viking imposes a financial "penalty" for guests who plan their flights through their air department and wish to fly in on any date OTHER than day of embarkation. This really cuts time very, very short, with little allowance for flight delays. For some absurd reason, Viking charges $100. extra, per guest, if they choose to fly in a day early and avoid the type of grief we experienced. Why they feel this cost is justified is beyond our comprehension. First, the customer saves Viking the need to provide an airport transfer to the ship. The customer purchases their own transportation, hotel, entertainment, food and beverage. It costs Viking nothing and actually save them time and trouble. I'm still annoyed with this policy as it affecting our next cruise plans with Viking. Once aboard, everything was delightful. The food was exceptional. Excellent variety and selections, fresh, beautifully presented and prepared with an expert hand. Since we are wine enthusiasts, we always purchase the Silver Spirits package as a convenience. It is actually quite a bargain. The wine list was adequate and far from legendary.Nevertheless, the Sky's sommelier, Roman, was delightful and went to extra effort to make suggestions and recommendations. Our waiters and the hostess always recognized us and called us by name! Our cabin steward, Edy, was equally fantastic. He could not have been more friendly, helpful, attentive and thorough. Always at the ready to assist in any way possible, including remembering my cabin number when I forgot it the first couple of days. If you are looking for a cruise with non-stop entertainment, Viking is not for you. We choose Viking specifically for that reason. No casinos, no guests under 18, no ambitious broadway shows, rock-climbing walls or on-board surfing. Viking caters to a different demographic. In the case of the Sky, guests could enjoy several pools and jacuzzi's, a heavenly spa facility too impressive for me to describe here (it has a "snow-room", if you can imagine), a full gym, and outdoor exercise and sports options (putting green, shuffleboard). Plenty to occupy one's interests when not ashore. We have always found Viking to provide exceptional shore excursions. The guides are very knowledgeable and, with few exceptions, quite amenable, enthusiastic and helpful. We did, however, experience quite a bit of unhappiness and discomfort on the 5 hour optional excursion to Krka National Park. The park itself was spectacular and well worth the time. The problems occurred when the guide seemed to underestimate the time required for many "older folks" to walk across narrow bridges or pathways. Secondly, the bus driver became completely lost on the way back to the ship. This confusion added two hours of unhappiness, which became more and more pronounced as time ticked on. Guests were unhappy, and the bus driver and guide swearing at each other! The final problem, and very upsetting to us, was the communication (not) provided by the Viking representative at the Hotel Molino Stucky where we stayed during our three day post-cruise extension in Venice. Poor communication caused us great confusion, grief and some money. When this fact was brought to her attention, she became very hostile and defensive. Rather than simply say " sorry for the misunderstanding", she thought it better to pursue an argument. She was truly the only completely rude Viking employee we have ever experienced. Embarcation and disembarkation are non-events with Viking. Quick, simple, no lines, no confusion. So, all in all, a great trip. We forgive Viking the glitches and will be repeat guests. Off to the Nile in 2020! Read Less

We have done Viking River Cruises and they have been very nice. Thought we would like to try the ocean and weren't disappointed. The itinerary was also a draw as we hadn't been to these places. Hard to say what I liked best so I will just leave it that the 'package' was marvelous. Food, service, décor, excursions were all outstanding. We didn't eat in one of the reservation only dining areas but the others were so good! I quickly found that three desserts with each meal was perfectly okay. I also did the afternoon tea and it was great. A room service breakfast started the day right. Our cabin steward was so nice and by the morning after we embarked knew our names. I enjoyed sitting in the public rooms listening to music and having a drink in the afternoon. Things were tasteful and not overdone and quiet. No bands blaring at the pool! We had very knowledgeable guides for all excursions and learned a lot. It was hot but that is normal for the area in August. Too bad there isn't a rating higher than 5. I can't wait to go on another Viking cruise. Read Less

Heard about it 2 years ago when we did the Homeland Cruise on the Sea. Always wanted to visit Greece, go back to Italy and visit Barcelona. The staff and crew were fabulous! Alberto, our room steward (now on the Sky) and Ivana our room attendant were fabulous and anticipated our needs and wants. They always greeted us with smiles. They are true Viking Ambassadors! William, the restaurant manager, always helped us with the perfect tables and reservations, and Elinora, the wine steward, shared both her great knowledge of wines and her friendship. Nickoli and Alexander would greet us with smiles, handshakes and our favorite drinks. The excursions were great and very well planned. Scott, the excursion manager always had time to listen if we had any questions or concerns. The Viking Ocean Cruises have exceeded our expectations on both cruises. The finishing touch were the Viking representatives who were at the airport for our departure. They collected our luggage and had it taken to our ticket counter, and then led our group from to bus to the ticket counter! Seamless transportation from arrival on 04 Aug (we did a pre-cruise excursion in Athens) to our departure from Barcelona. Read Less

This was a present from our daughters for our 30th anniversary. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. We felt pampered because Viking picked us up, handled our baggage and just in general took great care of us! The restaurants onboard were all wonderful! We ate most of our meals in the World Cafe and they had themed meals for the ports we were visiting (along with a great variety of other dishes)! The excursions were very nice. We would have liked a little more time to wonder around on our own but there was a schedule to keep so we understand. Montenegro was probably our favorite. If going there take the trip to the country olive farm, the family that runs the farm is very nice and made us feel at home. Plus they have turned us into olive oil snobs! Overall it was a wonderful experience and I don't know if we will be able to recreate ever again! Read Less
