The cruise was generally excellent mainly because of the the variety of food, the service, the gym and running track, and the itinerary. I will not go into detail on those factors because you can read about them in numerous other reviews. Instead, I will discuss a few deficiencies aboard Nautica and suggest some ways to overcome them so that they will not interfere with your enjoyment of the cruise. The final week After seeing Petra, there are 4 days a sea, then a ½ day stop in Salalah, Oman, and then another day at sea before stopping for a day in Muscat, Oman. Salalah is a dead-zone as far as tourism is concerned. There is nothing to see in the industrial area that surrounds the gigantic port. Moreover, the taxi drivers’ union does not allow the ship to offer its usual free shuttle into the town. We heard numerous complaints from other passengers about the boring tours of Salalah offered by Nautica (at outrageous prices). On that day, we stayed onboard the ship even though it meant we went 6 full days without going ashore. My advice: Take some good books and projects to help fill the hours in that final week. Shore excursions Because we paid O-Life fares, we received 4 excursions each, which we used for tours that were only accessible by the ship's buses. We found the main problem on these excursions with 30+ people was that it was difficult to hear the guide unless you were standing right beside him or her. Oceania needs to take a lesson from Viking and provide Vox machines for all passengers on all tours. We found that for half the price of Nautica's shore excursions we could easily book better, small group tours using top-rated companies that we found on Tripadvisor. Then everybody could hear the guide and ask lots of questions. We used Love Egypt Tours in Luxor and Jordan Horizons for Petra. Specialty restaurants reservations Oceania does not reward loyalty; instead they give perks to passengers based on how much they pay for their staterooms. For example, someone who is a first time Oceania guest who buys a stateroom for $25000 gets to reserve specialty restaurants at least a month before someone who has been on several Oceania cruises and has spent over $50000 in total, but always on porthole staterooms on level 3. That's not fair. I booked the minute I was allowed to reserve specialty restaurants and did not get a single one of my choices because people in more expensive staterooms had taken all the available tables. However, when I embarked, I went immediately to the dining room and they exchanged all my (bad) specialty restaurant reservations for the times I wanted. Lesson learned: Oceania holds back a lot of times to satisfy unhappy customers like me who request changes when they are onboard. It's also worth noting that we received better meals and equal service in the Grand Dining Room. We will likely not bother reserving in the specialty restaurants on our next cruise. WiFi and Nautica’s computer lab With the O-Life fare, you get free WiFi. However, it’s not their premium WiFi and it’s slow. I can't understand why Oceania offers a service such as WiFi when it is clearly substandard. The two hours before dinner seem to be the worst. Moreover, if you go to the computer lab you may find that some external drives cannot be read by the ship’s computers. I suspect it’s because those computers are PCs and don’t read files that are made on Apple machines. Before you leave home, if you’re a Mac user, test your external drives to make sure they can be read by a PC (eg. at your local library). Also make sure all your files are saved in PDF or .doc format. Food Although the meals are generally excellent, we experienced 2 problems. First, chicken breasts or thighs were raw inside on 2 occasions. We sent them back and got well-cooked replacements. Make sure if you order chicken that you specify you want it well done. Undercooked chicken can be dangerous! A second problem is that the Terrace Grill (the buffet restaurant that you will probably use for most breakfasts and lunches) has the worst design of any cruise ship we have been on. Why? -- 90% of the food is crammed onto counter-tops on both sides of a very narrow aisle, about 50 feet long. You’re continually banging into other guests who are shoulder-to-shoulder trying to get food. The solution: Go very early or very late. Canyon Spa I listened to one of the hour-long health seminars given by the fitness trainer. It was about all the “terrible” health problems caused by the accumulation of toxins in the body. Since I have a biology degree, it soon became obvious that although there was some accurate anatomical and physiological information given out, the majority of the “facts” simply involved vague, misleading half-truths. The objective was to sell several months’ supply of Canyon Spa teas and a seaweed bath product that would supposedly rid the body of toxins. (The cost: over $1000 for a six month supply delivered to your home) It was the worst example of quackery and “snake oil” sales I have ever seen, with not a shred of valid medical research to support the use of those products. Oceania should be ashamed of allowing that kind of misinformation to be foisted on passengers, most of whom have low scientific literacy. My advice: Use the spa for massages if you want to pay their ridiculous prices, -- but skip the seminars. In summary, none of these problems affected our enjoyment of the cruise. I simply offer them as a warning to future passengers on Nautica or her sister ships. No cruise ship is perfect. Read Less

The cruise had a fabulous itinerary and we chose it for that. We were not disappointed. The cruise was amazing and the ports were phenomenal. Everything was interesting and easily explored. Sometimes we had to travel a distance from port to the points of interest but that is often to be expected with a cruise. We could not have been more pleased with the choice of ports. We arranged for private shore excursions and were so happy we did. In 2 ports we took ship tours because there were no private tours available. In Limassol, Cyprus, the tour was OK - not great, but interesting. In Salalah, Oman, the tour was absolutely terrible. The ship should have given everyone a refund of the money they charged. The tour was to be 4 hours and it ended up being 2 1/2 hours because of immigration problems. However, the tour was terrible, uninteresting and not worth even $25. Just horrible. We complained, as did many other people. My recommendation is to stay away from ship tours if at all possible. The ship was lovely and it was kept very clean. We had a problem, however, with service in the Grand Dining Room and in Waves Grill. Both seemed to be short-staffed. Many times there were tables that needed to be bussed at Waves. Since this is an outdoor venue and the weather was lovely, many people wanted to sit outside but we had to bus our own tables sometimes. The staff just couldn't keep up with it. The service in the GDR was excruciatingly slow most nights. We didn't find the wait staff overly friendly - certainly not as it had been on other Oceania sailings. Something was off on this sailing and it was noticeable to many. The menu in the GDR was unspectacular and often plain boring. Several nights there was nothing that any of us wanted. The Jaques Pepin menu never changed and was very tired by the end of the cruise. The specialty restaurants were much better, with better service and food. We found Toscana a bit more to our liking than Polo Grill because the wait staff was better. The food was more inconsistent in Polo Grill, too, but both were FAR better than the GDR. We were able to eat 6 times in the specialty restaurants and we were very glad we could b/c the GDR was just not up to Oceania's normal standards. Add poor service to that on some nights - a 15 minute wait for a waiter to even come to the table!! - and it was a recipe for dissatisfaction. We always went to Happy Hour in Horizons and had one server who was outstanding, Beverly. She was attentive, knew our drink selections after the 2nd day and was always cheerful. If we didn't sit in her section, she would come to us and ask us why we weren't sitting in her section. She really cared about us and proved that good service is still possible on Oceania. She made our evenings so very enjoyable. Our cabin was always kept clean, however, when we first arrived, we did not see our cabin steward until the next day! This is unheard of. We knew the name of our attendant but we never saw him. I called for extra hangers and they took forever to arrive. Poor service there on the first day. When we finally saw our cabin steward the next morning, we found out it was not the one who had been assigned to us. The steward originally assigned to us had left the ship in the embarkation port. We figured that there had been some personnel problems b/c surely they would not have assigned him to our cabins had they known he was leaving. Still, no word of explanation nor was there an apology for the replacement. And we still would not have met our new steward if it hadn't been for the fact that he was in the hall when we left the cabin the next morning. Another "off" thing about this sailing. The Cruise Director, Julie James, is a bit tired and long in the tooth. She was our Cruise Director once before and we didn't think she was all that great. She is friendly and bubbly but that's about it. She doesn't expend a lot of energy getting to know her crowd. We have had CDs who are much more engaged with the passengers. The production entertainment staff was engaging and the kids worked really hard but they were not all that good. They were as cute as they could be but they didn't seem to be that skilled. Sometimes off key in the singing. The dancers were very good and far more skilled. The hired entertainers (magician, musician, flautist) were excellent. They could not have been better and we enjoyed them tremendously. The professional lecturers were outstanding and we enjoyed their presentations. Since we were seeing so many foreign ports, their input and information was extremely valuable and helpful. All in all, we have loved Oceania and are willing to give this cruise experience in the cabin and dining room areas a pass. Perhaps something was going on that we were not aware of as passengers. Certainly, we have experienced a much better Oceania in the past. We hope that this is not becoming the standard because if it is, we will be turning our allegiance elsewhere. An outstanding itinerary cannot make up for some of the issues we found. Read Less

We chose this cruise primarily because of the itinerary and it did not disappoint. We made all our own tour arrangements at each port so I can not comment on the ships tours. Our room was fantastic and the service bar none. We found all the amenities great. We especially liked the Terrace Cafe just because of its variety of selection and casual atmosphere. We did enjoy Toscanas food as well, but did find the Polo fell short of our expectations. The entertainment in the evening was energetic and we were so impressed with the takent of the young enetertainers on the ship. The enrichment lectures were really informative and we tried not to miss any of them. We enjoyed the small ship atmosphere and the friendly staff. Our housekeeping staff went above and beyond any requests we had. The embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly and we were quick to get off and on the boat to meet up with our tour groups. We will definitely use Oceania again. Thanks for a wonderful experience. Read Less

We are active, mature, independent experienced travelers who've been on 10 cruises or so. We had booked Oceania's Lima-Miami cruise, which they must have oversold because they kept sending emails inviting us to voluntarily switch to other cruises. We eventually swapped for this and were awarded an amazing Vista Suite at the front of the boat. That set a fabulous, luxurious tone for this, our second voyage with Oceania. It had a spacious living room with dining table, bedroom, large bath and a guest bath, plus generous veranda, butler service, premium benefits like 6 bottles of alcohol and Bulgari toiletries. We didn't want to ever leave the suite! Friends in the "penthouse suite" were extremely disappointed with their tiny bathrooms and said that would fit into our guest bath. We enjoyed this itinerary, returning to some of our favorite cities (Athens, Barcelona--both of which we extended before and after the cruise), and getting to Israel and Pompeii/Herculaneum for the first time. Would have been ideal to add Santorini instead of one of the lesser Greek ports. However, as others have said, the level of quality is not the same as our first cruise with Oceania five years ago. Food was good but not scrumptious including in the two specialty restaurants. We heard multiple complaints about rubbery lobster and tasteless meats. We were surprised that nearly everything shut down at 10 or earlier so if you wanted something sweet for a nightcap, you had no options (except room service). There were three major flaws that marred the cruise for us, with one that put our health at risk. 1. After embarking, everyone was hustled into the terrace cafe while the rooms are still being prepared. That means you have the largest crowd you'll ever have in one place at one time. When we arrived, it was a zoo. There were no seats and no one to help direct traffic or offer alternatives. This was a poor welcome and should be immediately fixed. 2. The quality of the excursions were uneven, with some very poor guides and only a few fabulous ones. Unacceptable for the prices we were charged. 3. One such excursion to Masada and the Dead Sea in Israel put the entire bus at risk. The air conditioning did not work as we rode for one hour 45 minutes after having been in the Dead Sea, in temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The guide and driver were not quickly responsive or apologetic. This same bus had to be "fixed" at lunch because its engine could barely putter over any rise. We were told the bus had been fine the previous day. In fact, my husband and I were on this exact same bus the day before and it already was rattling along. Another bus in the same excursion actually had to back down several rises because it could not make it up--that was also "fixed" during a lunch break. So clearly this tour company requires more stringent oversight. The passengers on our excursion all struggled with the heat and dehydration; one nurse on board was pondering how she was going to help so many people in distress. We were extremely fortunate no one suffered a catastrophic health issue before we were finally transferred to another bus. We all filed complaints the next day. A week later, on our last night,we received notice we would get a 50% rebate--presumably because we did get our full excursion after all. We found that response to be insulting, as if the risk to our health was not that big of a deal. We wrote a letter to Oceania to follow-up. We were told we would hear from guest relations. It's been three weeks now. No word. So much for your world your way. Hard to recommend them as much as I would like to. And, we wonder: are they still using the same tour company in Israel?! I chose this cruise line due its reputation for providing the finest cuisine at sea, and its reputed service provided by the high crew to staff ratio. We sailed from Piraeus Greece to Dubai on a 20 day cruise and were really looking forward to our concierge balcony stateroom which was our first disappointment. The cabin furniture had seen better days and was covered in a dark varnish which gave the room a gloomy feel. The carpet badly needed a shampoo as it had a stained and dirty appearance. The bathroom was very small and god help you if you dropped the soap whilst in the shower cubicle. We have had better cabins on other cruise lines and wonder how Oceania can label it concierge and price it as such. On the plus side, were the efficient and friendly cabin staff. The two speciality dining venues whilst imposing no surcharge failed to impress. The steaks in the Pole Grill were overcooked (my medium rare steak came well done) and was as tough as old boots The grand dining room was probably the best choice for evening meals as It provided adequate fare on a consistent basis and occasionally provided excellent meals. The terrace cafe was simply a disgrace. Food that should have been served hot was barely warm. Food hygiene was poor. Whilst in some ports, the food was left uncovered and much enjoyed by the large number of flies that chose to settle on it.. When asked why the food was not covered, I was told that it should be!! I then asked why it wasn't, I was given a shrug. Little things like warm milk being served with breakfast cereals or pots of tea filled with water that clearly wasn't hot enough to make a proper cup of tea are examples of the lack of detail one wouldn't expect on a ship of this class. Food overall fell short of the boast that Oceania provides the best cuisine at sea. The coffee shop was serviced by the most surly of staff who clearly didn't want to be there Entertainment and guest speakers were second rate at best Excursion were overpriced as were the drinks on board. I have enjoyed cruising on many different lines and can say in all honesty that Oceania Nautica's cuisine, entertainment and service fell short of all of them. In short Nautica was overpriced and overrated. Read Less

Oceania always provide good services, food and entertainment. The only disappointments were the cancellation of Istanbul and Cairo within the lists of Port of Call. Those cities were the reasons for the initial booking of this cruise. Some travelers mentioned receiving shipboard credit after complaining to Oceania (which would need confirmation). If that was true and correct, Oceania should have done across the board for all passengers. During the passage of the Suez Canal/Red Sea, the ship was attacked by flies. The crew had to do extra duties every night to fumigate the Terrace Cafe and other public areas. Oceania is very concerned of the safety of the passengers especially when sailing through the potentially high-risk areas. The captain advised all blinds or curtains would need to be pulled together after dark to avoid the attractions of the privates and the open decks were closed for public access. Closing the deck after dark caused some inconvenience because some passengers such as myself would normally have their exercise walks after the big dinners. Read Less

The itinerary on the cruise was excellent - a passage visiting Greece, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Oman and Dubai. Cairo was cut from the itinerary one day after the final payment date, which was a disappointment and some passengers felt a devious move. A few passengers made alternate plans to visit Cairo by alternate means either during or after the cruise. The embarkation in Athens and debarking in Dubai were effortless. The Nautica is a small ship, making for an intimate experience with fellow passengers and crew. The food is excellent across the board, be it in the dining room or terrace grill. Toscana the Italian venue served perhaps the best Italian food we have eaten anywhere. The Polo Gill was fine, but not outstanding. Because it is small, there generally isn't much to do at night on board. There is a single nightly show at 9:30, which can be on the later side for some folks. The ship's crew performers were perhaps the best we have ever seen after 26 cruises across different companies; the same could not be said for the talent that was brought on board to perform for 1 or 2 nights. The balcony cabins are an acceptable size, but the bathroom is very small. The beds feature a special matress which was very comfortable. The ship tours are very expensive, generally at least twice as expensive as private tours - we found a private overnight tour to Luxor for $300 per couple, while the ship charged $699 per person for the same tour. I definitely would go back on the Nautica because the crew makes you feel very comfortable and the ship has a very nice ambiance. Read Less

The cruise was Oceania quality all the way. Food, service, staff, programs all were as good as we expected and worth the money. Our original idea that a cruise was the best way to see this part of the world was verified in spades. It was really nice to come back to the sanity and safety of the ship, and to know what you would be eating, and sleeping in every night. The cabin stewards were not quite up to usual standards, not as responsive but still very pleasant and helpful. The time in port was just about right for this trip. This was certainly a part of the world where you could spend 6 hours or 6 weeks. We come back to Oceania when we want it right. Read Less

This was my first cruise with Oceania (have cruised in the past on larger ships/other lines) and Mom's 9th cruise with Oceania (5th on the Nautica). Traveling with an experienced cruiser makes a difference! We flew into Athens a day early to ensure ourselves and our luggage arrived safely. Our hotel was walking distance to the Acropolis, so we spent the morning of our departure exploring the Acropolis and didn't depart for Piraeus until after 2:30 p.m. This enabled us to walk onto the ship without delay (apart from clearing the security line at the port terminal along with passengers on other ships who were returning from shore excursions). Staterooms on the 6th floor were not ready, so we headed for a snack at the Terrace Cafe before heading into our room to unpack. Our stateroom with veranda was quite nice, and we were well taken care of throughout the cruise by our stewards. We were on the Starboard side, and for most of the ports, we had great land views while in port. Almost every dish we had on-board was outstanding. I definitely enjoyed the portion sizing such that I could enjoy appetizer, soup/salad and main course - rather than the typical American portion size that would feed me multiple meals. One tuna appetizer was so good that I considered cancelling the main course and asking for another serving. I enjoyed being able to sample menu items from Red Ginger (a special not available aboard Nautica at this time). This was the first time on a cruise that I've done shared seating. For us, this worked out fabulously and we made some great friends at meals who we then saw throughout the cruise - on tours and at some of the shows. Past cruises were on large ships, so the small ship experience was new and refreshing. I think the only amenity I missed from a larger ship is the movie screen over the pool. The clientele on this ship is older, so climbing walls and water slides are unnecessary. Traveling with an experienced Oceania cruiser allowed me to join in on a few experiences I would not otherwise have enjoyed - like the Captain's reception and an invitation to dinner with several of the crew. This made for a more personal experience. We did tours in every port (which is exhausting), so I didn't participate in as many of the onboard activities during the day as I might have. On our day at sea, I met up with the group learning needlepoint in order to find fellow travelers of like mind - which was another avenue for meeting people aboard who we saw throughout the cruise. Shore excursions are expensive when booked through the ship. As these were ports that I was not familiar with, we did rely on the ship's tours. In the future, we will likely branch out to explore other options. Of the 10 tours, only one was a dud. We enjoyed a number of guides who were enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. Disembarkation was painless. We chose to take our chances on finding a cab, and there were several available when we left the ship. That cost us roughly half of what a transfer into town through Oceania would have cost. Our original plan had been to take the train in to town, but exhaustion and common sense had us rethink that plan. The cab allowed us to get to our hotel promptly and utilize their shuttle for a day in Rome before flying home. (Hotels before and after and airfare were not booked through Oceania). As an aside, we originally booked this cruise because of the starting point in Istanbul. When the itinerary changed in late January, we thought long and hard about changing to a different cruise. We were pleasantly surprised with the substituted ports. I am still hoping ti visit Istanbul in the future. Read Less

We have done quite a few in the past with other lines..Service is their main focus with food being the second.The veranda is standard size BUT the bed was amazing, I wanted to pack it in my suitcase. The steward for our room was professional, friendly and unobtrusive. The stateroom was clean was well maintained This a small ship which I loved because you get to know a lot of passengers and everyone is friendly. A small ship can also go ports that the large cruise ships must pass up. This is a good consideration when choosing a ship with more diverse ports. Shore excursions are very pricey so you want to consider and alternate tours. All i all very nice trip.. at the end of the trip in Rome we were met by a private tour company Rome Connections.. Amazing Read Less
