We had cabin 7238, Silver Junior Suite. It was beautiful, the ship is only six months old so our cabin was rather immaculate. Bathroom with full size bath, sink plus separate walk in shower. Opposite was a separate toilet and full size sink. One large double wardrobe plus another stand alone wardrobe with hanging space plus drawers. Lots of storage space. We had unused hangers and empty drawers, there was so much space. Comfortable bed, great lighting, fabulous large flat screen TV, and large desk. Balcony was large, and had the most comfortable balcony furniture I have ever had (this was my 46th cruise). Our room steward Cheng was very helpful and super friendly. We are not very demanding people but he was keen to help in any way he could. We bought a water pack of 12 bottles, which cost AUD$63, and they were in the room when we arrived. Dining - we ate lunch in the MDR on day one, it was fine, good service. We also ate one dinner in the MDR and the food quality was good. But the MDR was very busy, we had anytime dining but they took us downstairs to the traditional dining section as there was no space. As we had a Silver Junior Suite we were entitled to eat in the Silver Dining Room on deck 14. This was a great space, mainly buffet but you can also order from a small fixed menu which they bring to you. We ate here breakfast, lunch and dinner most days. Service was excellent, no wait for a table. Others told us of the huge queues for the MDR and even the buffet. The problem was we had a lot of large family groups on board who were eating together and not wanting to move on, hence no table turnover. Our friends had a booking for My Time dining and when they arrived for their table they were advised to join the long queue. They said 'we have a booking' and were advised that everyone on that huge queue had a booking as well. No tables were available. We had Diamond drinks in the Silver Lounge every evening, you go to the bar yourself, there was no table service. The bar staff were good though, it was fairly quiet most evenings, and they had a large choice of drinks. The Silver Concierge Sylvia was lovely, very friendly and helpful. We had a great time there most evenings. Shows - we saw The Silk Road in TWO70 lounge, don't miss it, it was spectacular. Really fabulous show. We also saw the production show Showgirls in the theatre, also really good. We missed a couple of special acts that we had seen on an earlier cruise. The theatre is large but get there early for a good seat. We are Diamond, embarkation around 12 noon was easy, and disembarkation at 8am was an easy walk off. We hopped into a taxi to the airport (around HKD320) and there was a huge line up of cabs waiting to take the passengers. We did a ship tour Okinawa which went to Okinawa World (a cave system, and traditional buildings/shops), the ruins of Shuri Castle and a shopping street. It was great! We had a great tour leader. In Subic Bay we did the Subic Bay Naval Base and Oceanworld tour. This was USD119 and did not deliver what was described. I complained the next day back on the ship and the shore excursion people were very apologetic and offered a 20% refund which I agreed to. It was the first time the ship had been to this port and lots of tours didn't go to plan. We did a private tour for Illocos, which took us to Vigan. Service was really good everywhere, with friendly staff. The Cruise Director Fang was fantastic! Such a great guy. Read Less

This was a last-minute(ish) decision to go cruising somewhere guaranteed to be warm & intetesting over the Christmas break. Iglu was offering a decent package at a competitive price so we went for it! We'd not been on a Princess ship before and were pleasantly surprised by the overall standard of entertainment, the informal yet classy vibe, mix of fellow cruisers (mostly 50+ age group but also with some intergenerational family groups), the general presentation of the ship and service provided by the staff. Our balcony suite was very good, with lots of wardrobe space (which suited my partner!) and a reasonably private balcony area (on deck 12 forward) where we could relax and enjoy the warmth of the tropical climate, whilst sipping a drink and being serenaded by the gentle sounds of the ocean as the Sapphire Princess cut majestically through the benign, blue, ocean waves. The onboard entertainment was excellent, apart from the comedian, who was awful. Matt Baker (the Ents Director) was superb. The dance troupe were a highlight. Food was great and the anytime dining option worked well for us. We also took advantage of the excursion programme to visit various places, including two stops in Vietnam, Bangkok, Kho Samui & KL. Great for first time cruise travellers .We booked from official RCI wholesaler in India -Antilog Vacations website & got a steal deal of 45% . On board there were lots of shows at extra pricing which was steep.excursions to sea halt ports were a little expensive . One tip is to never ever book a DC cabin.Take balcony.Ship is good and hospitable staff welcomes u with smile.At night the ship would shudder and being the first timer it was a bit awkward for us to adjust.Sea sickness is not an issue during the day but for elderly its a major issue & needs to be taken care of. For veg travellers its a bit of nightmare as food is mostly east asian & south asian with non veg thrown around and limited tasteless veg options but still for all its money its definitely a steal . I have heard that its far better than genting & star cruises. Dining has different areas.One can dine at the deck or the restaurants .Majority is non vegetarian food .There are 2-3 indian dishes like dal,roti,pulao as well.Activities happen mainly in form of shows like dance troops & magic for which one has to pay . Service is a tad slow so i would give it a 2/5 rating . better go for things in the house than ala carte ordering Read Less

We were attracted to this cruise because of the comprehensive itinerary that took us to Japan, Shanghai, Taiwan and Hong Kong in 14 days. We had sailed on the larger S class ships before, but found the smaller Millennium equally as good, not lacking anything except a specialty restaurant similar to Murano. The ship was in beautiful condition after its recent refurbishment. Our aft cabin had a huge balcony and the cabin itself was spacious. Our attendant Oliver, was perhaps the best we’ve had. There are plenty of quiet places on the ship to read or talk, a variety of bars ranging from the buzzy Martini Bar to the more sedate Cellarmasters or the in between Rendezvous. We varied our evening dining between the main dining room, specialty restaurants and the Oceanview buffet. The food in the main dining room was very good, the sommelier excellent and the staff very attentive. The only gripe is that the tables for two are much too close together. This was often awkward depending on who your neighbours were and a real turn off. The Tuscan Grill lacks the view of S class ships and the food whilst good, was not worth the surcharge. Le Petit Chef was great fun and very clever. Loved Cafe Bacio. Now we get to the Oceanview Cafe - although the food was good and there was a wide variety available, the behaviour of other guests turned this venue into a zoo at breakfast. Breakfast in the main dining room was an option for a more civilised meal. The Chinese visa issue was a big one for many guests, We opted to get a visa so had no problems leaving the ship in Shanghai. Chinese officials however denied entry to a number of passengers - even though technically they didn’t need a visa. Celebrity had sent confusing emails about this, but in the weeks before stressed the need for a visa. We complied and had an amazing day in Shanghai. We took one ship tour as it included free time, all other tours were organised via our roll call. Tours in Japan are not as easy to organise as in other parts of the world and are quite expensive. Distance from some ports is also an issue, so for some a ship tour may be best. The cruise director was one of the best we’ve had. We found the variety of shows in the main theatre very good. The drummers, acrobats, pianist and the male vocalist were standouts. Daytime entertainment on sea days was poor. Overall, Celebrity lived up to its reputation as a premium line in the mainstream market. Read Less

Having been on several river cruises with Viking which we love doing, we thought we’d book an Ocean cruise with Viking for our ruby wedding anniversaries. . We were a bit frustrated before going on the cruise owing to the system in place for booking trips. Seemed to be class driven. I.e. the more you paid the better the choice. We couldn’t book a morning trip on all the included trips and some of the paid trips. In fact some of the trips we had booked paid or otherwise were changed by the time we got on board. We had to faff about getting them organised to suit. Wasn’t too much of a problem but we felt the poor girl on guest services must have dreaded seeing us coming towards her. The excursions were good but the qv’s were a disaster. The guides were knowledgeable and fun on the coach but unless you were on their shoulders you couldn’t hear anything, too much static. The excursions were extremely busy too. Had a wonderful cruise on board the Orion. Great cabin, crew, and entertainment. Captain made a good choice by sailing to our second port of call to miss the typhoon that hit Tokyo. All the ports of call were superb but must say Taipei and Hong Kong were favourites. The food was good too but I felt this was the only thing that let you down. The temperature for me was warm as opposed to being hot. Some of the dishes in the world buffet for example the main roast of the day was served very rare. Not good. Some of the meals in the pool area were cooked to order but it was so hot in there that the “sides” were sitting out in all that heat so not too appetising at all. I had a chicken tikka and it was literally skin and bones. Yuk. Don’t get me wrong the chefs would cook you anything asked for which was great and hot but the sides were cool. The seafood dishes and sushi were all fantastic, they were served cold just as they should’ve. The restaurant was disappointing too it was cold in some of the areas and the food was served lukewarm at breakfast and dinner. Service was good at breakfast but a lot slower at dinner. We asked for a Sauvignon Blanc only to be told there wasn’t any so had a different wine which was nice too as is all the wines on offer but disappointed with not getting what we asked for especially when we got it later on in the bar. Enjoyed movies under the stars. The waiter guys up in explorers lounge were fabulous. Robin the whale and dolphin man was lovely. Even though we didn’t see too many whales or dolphins. The doctor was a fun chap. Something else!! This was a special cruise for our ruby wedding anniversaries and overall we did enjoy ourselves but would have to think again before booking a Viking ocean cruise. I don’t feel the experience we’ve had on the river boats have carried well on to the Ocean cruise ships. We maybe expected too much. Read Less

We chose this cruise based on its itinerary and it was very enjoyable. It was a first cruise for us (well, I had been on a cruise 28 years ago with a girlfriend but that was a long time ago) so we were not sure how we would enjoy this type of travel. We did a lot of research and it paid off (mostly). FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO SEEMED SURPRISED BY ADDITIONAL COSTS, TENDERS AND OTHER MATTERS, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE SPEND SOME TIME ON RESEARCH! For example, by reading other reviews of cruisers, we knew that getting to Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) and back in time would be difficult because of traffic and the timing of the ship's arrival and departure, so we took the NCL excursion. We were Haven Guests and were very grateful for the extra service (such as embarkation and disembarkation priority along with a reserved area for meals at breakfast and lunch) making our trip experience much better than many others, I am sure. What we didn't fully understand, though, was that being on deck 9 instead of 14 meant that we sometimes missed the true benefits of the Haven experience (such as having a butler and concierge ready to make things easier for us). Our butler and concierge were generally MIA unless we called and they both seem surprised that we hadn't asked to have something when we thought it would just be done (they only discovered that we were first time cruisers at the end of the trip and things might have been easier if we had volunteered that up front). There were a few other blips but we figured out what we needed to do in the first few days (and I did express my concerns to them) and we did get in tune with them after that. However, if you want to experience the full benefits of the Haven, I would recommend that you find a cabin/suite on Deck 14. Our cabin was right up front and the benefits of two balconies was wonderful, allowing us to have the best of both views and, while the noise of the anchor going up and down was clearly evident, it really didn't disturb us. Also, I am very prone to motion sickness and didn't feel the least bit queasy for the entire trip. We took mostly independent tours and they were, overall, excellent. There was one dud excursion which had more to do with the lack of English by the tour guide but we did hit all the sights. The tour into Bangkok using NCL was excellent, given that the guide was herding 32 people around but I cannot recommend the tour at the end of our trip into Singapore. We took the 4 hour tour ending at the airport and it was very expensive and certainly unimpressive. Dining was very hit and miss; Chin Chin was dreadful and La Cucina wasn't far behind. I would certainly not waste my money on La Cucina! Both service and the food was way below average. The first week seemed generally off for most of the entire dining areas - it was as if the waiters did not know what they were doing or where they should be at any one time. We were left waiting for several minutes without so much as a glass of water on a number of occasions and sometimes the food was not very warm when it arrived. A couple of very nice meals were had at Cagney's and Teppanyaki (go for the show, although the food was very good) but none of the meals made me feel that I had to go back. I admit I had expected better prepared food and the quality of the raw ingredients seemed lacking sometimes. The meal at Azura was very good and I would highly recommend going to the free sit down venues over the buffet (where a couple of times when we ventured in, we were horrified by the noise and people eating right beside the food - presumably so they could go back for more immediately. The fitness facility was good although I'm sure that it would have benefitted from some extra space. The free classes were generally well attended (or, on sea days, over attended) but the paid classes were almost empty. Internet was very poor but the guy at the Internet cafe was very helpful to get the most out of it. I must admit that I didn't pay enough attention to the small print and it was annoying that the service we had only applied to one device at a time! We had one unlimited service and two 250 minute services (that came as part of our package) so it was okay but I saved any big work on my computer for our days on shore when we could get 4G wifi service. Overall, we were very happy with our first cruise with Norwegian. They do seem to have worked out most of the problems with embarkation and disembarkation and tendering (at Koh Samui, for example, the ship was using commercial tender operations along with its own lifeboats) on this particular routing. This allowed for at least triple the numbers to get on the tender and the lineups were greatly reduced. Read Less

We chose this Cruise as it was out of our comfort zone and was for our Golden Wedding. We had a fantastic holiday The Ship was very good, bit tired in places but in general very nice. Main problem encountered was the vibration running through the ship when sailing, which suggests an in balance in the drive mechanism, especially when trying to sleep. Staff were the best we have encountered, food very good in all Depts and entertainment generally very good Flights too long for us especially on the return which was 6 hours late. The trips we did were very good and informative The ports were primarily working ports which was a bit off putting, possibly down to cost. Overall a fabulous holiday which we will never forget. We had a problem with dirty water in our first cabin but this was quickly remedied by a move to another cabin John and Pat Caulkin Read Less

We took a cruise from Singapore to Dubai, on part of the QM2 around the world trip. The cabin with sheltered balcony was great and we had an ice bucket with champagne waiting for us when we embarked. The ship is beautiful and the staff were helpful and efficient. The negatives for me were firstly the standard of food in the Britannia Restaurant which we were assigned to. The food was generally not prepared in a manner fitting the ship or the price of the cruise, meat and fish were dry and needed sauces, the vegetables were often hard - beyond al dente and almost uncooked, and the desserts were tasteless and unimaginative. The chefs seemed to focus more on presentation than the taste and texture of the food. We went to the buffet on deck 7 quite often which had a bigger variety of better prepared food and enjoyed it more than the restaurant. The other negative is the fact that there are two very small pools for a large number of people, the limit in each pool is 14 (I think) and there was hardly any room to move around if there was half that number in the water. As the temperatures were around 30 degrees and more, a lot of people were in and out of the pool especially on sea days. I preferred my previous cruises on smaller ships that had better food and bigger pools. Read Less

The ports on this cruise were fabulous. Even though it was cold for the first few weeks, it was well worth going. The crew on Westerdam are some of the best I've come across on any HAL ship. ALL of them were wonderful. The cabins however, are tired & need an upgrade. Our bath had a crack in it & poured water all over the floor every time we had a shower. We tried to get them to fix it but, in the end, we fixed it ourselves with gaff tape!! The public rooms however, had been upgraded & were excellent. Food in the MDR was great, as was the service. The Lido however, was another story. Food was usually cold or luke warm & some of the service attendants less than friendly, so we stopped eating there. The entertainment was OK. Production shows were ordinary & so were the guest entertainers. BB's Blues club band were fantastic but played VERY little blues so we stopped going!! The ports were excellent & the guest lecturer Master Kam fantastic. Also, they are now giving lots on talks with info about upcoming ports which, if you are an independent traveller, is invaluable going ashore by yourself. The ship's shore excursions that we went on were all good. Only problem, of course, is rude inconsiderate people who WON'T be back at the bus at the specified time making everyone else wait for them & losing sightseeing time at the next stop. Read Less

Chose this cruise for its itinerary as it was going to all the places we had not visited before. The new refurbished ship looks good and from recent reviews it was overdue for the upgrade. We had just come off the Celebrity Solstice and flew into Hong Kong to pick up this Ship. You can see the difference between a Solstice class and a Millenium class but all in all the Celebrity Millennium is very good. The Captain Alex is brilliant with his great sense of humour. The food in the restaurant was not as good as the Solstice even though the menus are identical. The upstairs Buffett is very good with a good variety of food available throughout the day. The highlight I think for us, was the Ships tour to the lantern festival in Taiwan this was a great experience and we were very fortunate to be there at that particular time to participate in this beautiful event. We booked this cruise over a year ago based on the Singapore, Viet Nam and Hong Kong Itinerary. Unbeknownst to us, this was going to be the first cruise after the Millenium was being refurbished in dry-dock. The ship was being "touched up" right up to the time we sailed and throughout the sailing. We were told to arrive any time between 11:30 AM and 3:30 AM. Registration was fairly uncomplicated. Groups were seated based on cabin class. One of the ship's vocalist played as entertainment (beautiful voice), while we waited. Finally, at just after 12:30, an hour late, we were allowed to board. There was a great deal of excitement as everyone came aboard. The crew was very welcoming and went out of their way to assist. There was a nervous excitement in the air. We loved the new design and the feel of the ship. Our first constructive criticism - we were Aqua class. Blu, the Aqua class restaurant, was closed for lunch. For lunch we were told to go to the buffet. I really dislike buffets. I avoid them. Being around crowds of people fighting for food is not my idea of relaxation nor the way to begin a cruise. There was lunch at Luminae for suites. There was a private lunch for Concierge class in Metropolitan Dining Room. Blu should have been open for lunch. Our Cabin - we really liked the decor of the cabin and the design of the bathroom. The new beds are heavenly! There were some items that had been forgotten or not finished in our cabin. Celebrity was very responsive to the issues and by mid-cruise almost everything had been repaired. We weren't the only ones with room issues and from what I heard, Celebrity made every effort to make things right. The person we had dealt with in Guest Relations was excellent and checked each day until the room issues were resolved. The above issues are the only reasons I did not give our cruise 5 stars - an excellent rating. Dining - Blu was fantastic. We loved it so much we ate their exclusively. Our last Celebrity cruise we were in a suite and enjoyed Luminae - but this cruise - Blu might have been even better. The staff was truly outstanding. We enjoyed all of our meals there. Never felt rushed. Entertainment and Activities - there was so much to choose from. Truth is, this cruise we needed to unwind and just relax and that is exactly what we did. I used the spa for a whopping 7 times - the most I've ever been to a spa. Loved everyone there. We loved sitting on our veranda and staring out at the sea. The cruise was a very full one and most of the 2200 were from the UK and Australia. When we went to dance or watch a show it was packed. Excursions - We used Celebrity for our excursions with one exception. All were excellent and well worth the cost. Captain Alex - absolutely hysterical. He should be doing stand-up comedy. We looked forward to his morning addresses. To recap, the Millennium is a beautifully refurbished ship. My husband joked that it had that "new ship" smell. It was an almost perfect cruise minus a few things that were not ready or not finished in our Aqua cabin. The service we experienced was OUTSTANDING from everyone. We've only been back in the US 12 hours and miss the ship. Looking forward to our next cruise (booked on this cruise) in two years..... Read Less

We chose this cruise based on a couple of the cities that were on the itinerary that we had never been to before. Unfortunately, when we arrived onboard to our stateroom, there was a letter stating that Koh Samui had been removed from the itinerary and they had replaced it with Sihanoukville in Cambodia. This was not a huge issue, considering we had not been to Sihanoukville before, so we were looking forward to going there instead, as an alternative. In relation to the shore excursion, we opted for the free shuttle that was offered. After waiting 1.5 hours in the baking sun on the port in a huge line, we were informed that the shuttle buses were stuck in traffic and they didn't know how long it would be till they arrived. A guest suggested that a drink of cold water and some umbrellas for shade would be a good idea for the elderly and the children stuck in the line (this was after waiting for over an hour) and finally we received them. When one shuttle bus finally arrived back in port, the passengers who got off it said they had been on the bus for 3 hours. They had been stuck in traffic in the one spot for 2 hours going nowhere and then the bus turned around and brought them back to port. They didn't get to the market at all. Another passenger who had gotten a private taxi to the market said that it wasn't even worth going to. Very busy, crowded and only items relevant to the locals were being sold there. We had been keen to go to the market and then get a tuk-tuk down to the beach for a few hours. We thought they should have found out beforehand how many people were interested in going on the free shuttle so they could have had an idea of numbers instead of just waiting to see how many people lined up to get off. We were very disappointed to have missed out on this opportunity, especially after the disappointment of missing out on Koh Samui. The reason they had given us for bypassing Koh Samui was that there would be too many ships in port on the day of our arrival. These itineraries are arranged a year in advance. This did not seem like a very valid or viable reason, given that if Koh Samui were going to turn away a ship, it not likely be 3,000 cashed passengers. The tv advertisements for the cruises always show just a couple of people enjoying privacy and space on the ship and on the shore excursions. this is not the reality. But if you go with that in mind, you wont be too shocked at how busy it is and the shore excursions are always a bit of a rush and expensive. The food is very good and I loved having the formal nights. It is lovely to get dressed up and have a fancy dinner. It was also really good that everyone else was dressed up too. It wasn't just a few people, nearly everyone joined in on the formal nights. We were also pleased that once a movie had been shown on the outdoor cinema that it was then available to watch again in your stateroom on your tv. There was a great variety of movies and shows available in your stateroom. We purchased the soft drink package before we left. We had a note in our stateroom that the complimentary tumblers that came with the package were all gone and more would be arriving soon. In the meantime, they gave us a bottle of water each for our room as a thank you for our patience whilst we waited for them to arrive. A few days into the cruise, we went to the reception desk to enquire about the tumblers only to be told that the bottle of water was all we were being given. The card we had stating that we would be receiving the tumblers was wrong and there was nothing we could do about it. Again, a bit disappointing, but it didn't detract from our overall relaxing holiday that we enjoyed. Read Less

We chose the Westerdam because we had sailed on this ship before and were familiar with it. We stayed in a Neptune Suite Aft, level 7, corner suite with a verandah....which was very nice. Our room stewards were wonderful and met every one of our needs! The Itinerary was great, except Sihanoukville in Cambodia. This port is in it's infancy as far as tourists go, but we joined the ship that day they docked after leaving from the Bangkok excursion to go off on our own to visit Siem Reap and Angor Wat. We planned the excursion on our own (way less expensive than what was offered through Holland America) and found that city in Cambodia to be delightful. If Cambodia is judged by a traveler, only on this port, Cambodia is getting the short end of the stick....Siem Reap was wonderful. The food was good on board and plentiful, especially the Asian themed on the Lido deck, and in the Dining Room. We ate at the Specialty Dining three times....Rudy's Fish (not to our liking at all...probably what we ordered, versus the quality) and at the Pinnacle Grill Twice (food was excellent). We only went to one show, and it was only MEH, in our opinion. Very talented kids doing the same or similar shows we had seen before five years ago. We heard the comic/impersonator was awesome, but he missed that. As a Neptune Suite, we had the use of the Neptune Suite Lounge which was awesome...they had juices, coffees, light snacks, treats, small plates all day long for our consumption, and a wonderful staff (Gabrielle, Paolo) who answered any questions we had. Very kind. Also had unlimited use of the laundry services, which were done in one day, and nice to have (I would've packed way less and had more room for the huge amounts of stuff I bought in ports!) We also had priorty tendering, embarkation, and disembark. Avoiding lines was a positive to that benefit. The cabin was nice, large and suited our needs. HA probably needs to look at refurbishing the overall ship decor sometime soon however as it's a little dated in my opinion. Our dressing mirror was cracked and the tub and shower couldve used a little caulking update, but I'd give the room an A-. Now, the only real negative I have is the smoking issue. My husband and I both smoke. Before we booked this cruise, we most surely asked our cruise consultant about the availability of smoking areas. We were given six or seven spots as smoking areas, plus we were told we could smoke in the Casino. Imagine our surprise when we got on the ship and were told there was only one area to smoke....Lido Deck 9, aft. Thats it. No smoking in or anywhere near the Casino. (sorry Holland America but you lost a ton of money I would've spent had I not gotten up to go for a ten minute walk to smoke every few hours). I am fine with no indoor smoking totally, I get it, but the smoking area consisted of four tables that seated maybe 8 people, and they were hard as hell...no cushions, HARD, SLATTED TEAKWOOD BENCHES & SEATS. Considering the fact that we paid 4k plus each to be there, we were pretty annoyed. You had nowhere to layout where you could smoke. Obviously it took us a few days to kind of work through the annoyance of the misinformation we were given by our HA cruise consultant. Apparently there has been NO SMOKING in the casino and other spots for over 2 years on this ship. (Can't wait to review our cruise consultant on that one.) I think Holland is missing the boat (pun intended) by not having a reasonable accommodation for Casino players closer to the Casino. Another negative, was the fact that they decreased the size of the casino and put the Dueling Piano guys (who had a great show by the way) RIGHT NEXT TO THE BLACKJACK and POKER tables. I swear....it was a pretty popular show, and pretty crowded, but for GOD's SAKE...put a wall up between the two venues. I didn't mind hearing them, but I also liked hearing what the dealer had to say, or delight in the witty banter between players....not possible with two guys pounding out Piano Man just ten feet away! By the way, the casino staff were awesome....very service oriented and fun as well! One of the best choices we made was to come to SIngapore for a few days before the cruise, and to stay for an additional day the day before we flew home. SIngapore was lovely, had tons to do, was clean, great food, great shopping, etc. I loved all of the ports we visited, and we used Tours By Locals and Trip Advisor to find local guides so we could avoid the herds of folks on the busses to the touristy stuff. On each ofour excursions, we got a local flavor, and a real feeling of the culture and people we went to see. HaLong Bay was wonderful, loved Bangkok, my favorte spot was the visit to Da Nang- Hoi An Might Market (Amazing). Would we go again? Hmmmm.....I would go with Holland again, but not this ship...I, for personal reasons, would like to be able to smoke in a Casino, and have a reasonable accommodation and comfort when I do. We have cruises in this area twice already now with an alternative line, and have also been on NCL Jade twice over the years Post dry dock the new look and feel of the ship is excellent. It feels fresh and really like the “toned down” decor. The introduction of the Irish bar in particular is a great thing, and was a good central hub of activity right above the atrium We found the food to be excellent in Main Dining Room, such that we didn’t use specialty restaurants at all (we usually would do several times in a week). Generally service from the staff was excellent Smooth weeks sailing too.... so all very positive HOWEVER, there were some issues 1. Boarding at Singapore was a fiasco. We got off lightly with 2 hours of waiting and queuing, but some fared worse than we did. I’d have expected some niggles maybe as it was first run since dry dock, but the embarkation staff clearly didn’t have a clue how to process passengers and this created a huge backlog. 2. I suspect there were some “niggles” post dry dock. Our Air Condifioning wasn’t really working on arrival, it took 4 contacts including a late night (1am) rant at Guest Services to get any improvement. It did improve eventually but given the climate in that region I’d hardly call the cabin a sanctuary to rest and cool down as it usually is on board 3. MASSIVE failure in Kuala Lumpur. I’ve no idea what or why but literally just before getting off on day 1 we were told due to “operational issues with immigration in Singapore” our departure on day 2 had to be brought forward from 14:00 to 09:00. We had booked a hotel to stay off board that night, that plan was totally ruined given the distance from city to port made it to pressured in the morning. When we did depart on day 2 the ship limped along at barely any speed, so I am not sure why we couldn’t have stayed longer - I really suspect something undisclosed was the issue that forced us to leave early on the highlight stop of the trip Overall we had a good time (British couple, mid 30s). The demographic on board was older and far more British than we are used to with NCL, and this affected the atmosphere on board. The “white hot party” was rubbish basically compared to others we have done, and the Cruise Director and his staff were rarely seen in the week (we didn’t do any shows, guess he was hiding there) So overall NCL severly let themselves down with this one. We chose this trip for the itinerary. We recently retired and we were hopeing for a trip of a lifetime. Overall the itinerary was a good one with stops in very interesting ports. However, we have sailed with Norwegian 6 times now and this was probably the least organized in terms of shore excursions that we have ever been on. We found the shore excursions to be rated incorrectly in terms of difficulty. The weather in South East Asia is oppressively hot, and even though the ship recommends staying hydrated on the side trips, we were not allow to take water on or off the ship in most ports of call. In most circumstances the tours lasted 4-6 hours and many without water or even a small boxed lunch. Would it be too much to ask for NCL to throw us a some water and a banana? One poor gentleman actually passed out in Bangkok due to the heat and dehydration. The days that we had to be tendered in to the shore were nightmares! Neither the shore excursion crew were organized nor the buses etc. at the port. The tenders are HOT and uncomfortable and NCL consistently feels the need to PACK the tender full of people before leaving the ship. In Cambodia we chose to take the Level1 shore excursion through Ream Naitonal Park. It was "billed" as a boat ride and tour of the countryside. In our group we had a woman with broken ribs and another walking with a cane. The boats were slippery and difficult to get in and out of. But that wasn't the worse of it. When we got out of the boats we were literally in the middle of nowhere, with a guide that spoke very little english, who led the group on a one+ mile hike through rice fields, across duck boards, through marshes and through mud and muck. I truly have no idea how the woman with the cane made the trip. We stopped at little hut that was a school where cute Cambodian children sang to us and showed us how they write their language. Then we hiked another 1+ mile or so through some very tretuous and muddy paths to find the bus. We were not provided ANY water or any food this entire trip. The native people did provide us a sample of fruit if you dared to eat it. Many people were bitten by ants and scraped up with nettles. One person slipped on the mud upon leaving. It was NO LEVEL 1 - that's for sure. And we found this to be true with several other shore excursions as well. Overall the trip was lovely, but the ship was also headed into dry dock at Singapore and we got the sense that in the last few days of the trip those working on the shiip really started not to care so much about customer service. Everything was removed from our cabin mini-bars two days in advance of the cruise being over. Workman started to repair the ship and you would find them in your room fixing things all the time. For a ship that advertises NO LITTER on the seas, they started to scrap paint off the outside railiings about 3 days into the curise and my husband and I watched (disgusted) as thousands of led based paint chips flew into the ocean. There is a lot to improve on this trip. And the Jewel itself is in need of some serious renovation. Read Less

Pre-Cruise: We spent 3 nights in Shanghai at Les Suites Orient on the Bund. Great hotel, and amazing views of the Bund from the 20th floor. If you stay there, I recommend a high-floor, Bund view Deluxe room. Shanghai is an amazing city. Very clean. Super modern. No horns honking ($30 fine). Chinese food and drink surprisingly poor with some exceptions, but we had a fantastic time. Did some private tours that really made the experience enjoyable. Transportation: I recommend that you get around by taxi. We took a taxi to the port and it was maybe $25-$30 USD and a similar price from the port back to the airport. You'll probably want to have instructions in Chinese, as most drivers don't speak/read English, but this was convenient and the price was quite fair for the distances involved. Embarkation: Kind of a disaster, really. No porter (we don't travel light), very hot, sweated like crazy, which is not the way I want to start my cruise. Huge lines and the staff outside of the port spoke very little English. They initially directed me to the "foreign passengers" line, which was so long and moved so slowly. Then I saw a line for suites and Jr. suites, so they directed me there, but sent me to the Golden suites line, then shuffled me around some more. A slow, long, hot, uncomfortable and unpleasant experience. Highly disorganized and needs substantial improvement. The Ship: Very clean and modern. Not "elegant" like some of MSC's newer ships, but nice with a lot of technology. Maintenance was quite good. I didn't love the layout of the ship, and maybe it needed more than 2 elevator banks. I only used the ship's Wi-Fi for a day, but it was fast and fairly priced. There was a lot of focus on upsetting, which got pretty annoying. Sanitation was a focal point, which I appreciated. Activities: They offered things like indoor skydiving and Northstar, but with an extra cost, which I didn't love. Otherwise, there weren't a lot of things to do that we were interested in. Entertainment: Limited and not the best. We attended a high-tech show at Two70 which started off bad, but was good in the end. The sound and special effects were as good as I've seen. Quality of performers was good but not great. Overall, not as many quality entertainment offerings as I'd like to see. Passengers: Mostly Chinese, but more Americans, Aussies and Brits than normal. The menu and experience was definitely geared towards the Chinese passengers. Food: Mixed and mostly not in a good way. We had dinner in the Suite restaurant Coastal Kitchen every night. Most of the food was pretty good, but I'd still say below my expectations. The rack of lamb was quite good. Veggies and such, basic and so-so. The same for desserts. They did not often rotate the menu. For example, they used the same menu the first 3 nights and then switched back to it. Sirloin steak mediocre. Ahi Salad had maybe 3 tiny cubes of ahi surrounded by iceberg lettuce. While there's no lobster night (bummer) we ordered it at an extra cost and it was quite good. The food in the main dining rooms was poor. We only ate there for breakfast and lunch, but offerings were quite basic and really outshined by the Windjammer Cafe buffet, which was a surprise. Not only was the food not great, but again, the menu often was not rotated. While we had a nice time, I think it's fair to say the food was below expectations, especially in terms of lunch and breakfast. Lines in the main dining rooms were very long and very slow and all of this wait for a rather mediocre offering without proper menu rotation. Needs improvement. I might also add that there was no coffee in the room. Only 2 bags of Green Tea and sugar. $7.95 charge for room service, which I didn't love. Ports: Only 1 or zero shore excursions offered for most ports. We hired 2 private guides and did the Osaka ship's tour, which we enjoyed a lot. Hard to figure out why they didn't offer many tours. The ports themselves were quite good. We got a hotel and spent the night in Tokyo. But getting off the ship in the first port, Osaka, was a bit of a nightmare, as you have to clear Japanese Immigration, which is quite slow. My suggestions is to try to do the ship's tour on the first Japan stop, as you'll get your immigration clearances done and you'll be the first off the ship. Also, bring a clear copy of your passport because you'll need it. Also, I recommend that you get your cash (Yen) at the 7-11 shops, which are everywhere. Staff: Super friendly and super nice. Great experience with the crew. They have some good people working on this ship. Disembarkation: Far better than embarkation. Waits were reasonable, and fairly well organized, although the taxi situation was a bit disorganized. Overall: We really had a lot of fun. While I've shared some criticisms, I think we got a nice cabin at a fair price and we enjoyed the heck out of ourselves. This cruise truly is a cultural experience. It's not the typical cruise where you go to the Caribbean and pound down rum drinks, but I learned a lot and had a super time. Read Less

Have cruised with Princess many times and always had a great time. This new ship was built for the Chinese market at it shows. Poorly staffed, beds too hard, boarding process in Shanghai was abysmal. It did improve as the cruise progressed, but was a really bad start. I would not take Children on a Princess Cruise, average age of passengers is in their 80's. Way too many zimmer frames and wheel chairs and heart attacks and diversions for medical evacuations. That said, the cabin was good, although the mattress was way too hard and was not up to the standard of the promoted Princess Luxury mattress. Dining was fine food was wonderful, not enough staff in the first couple of days. Entertainment was average with only 3 production shows for the entire 22 days. Would I cruise again, yes, with Princess - not sure. They will need to reduce the number of old people first. Read Less

Loved having entertainment starting at 3:00 with 2 bands in Main Bar & having a afternoon comedian in "The Punchliner" on Sea - Days. Wish they change up the stage shows a bit... The customer service was great Bar staff; Waiters & room Stewards.. Carnival is renowen for this... The price of there cruises are very low, The drinks low also. unless you want a drinks package with other lines. The daily activities where great & Bad. They had a professor talking about the ports themselves (Culture, Food&Drink, History) eg Komodo Is & Phuket. The miss was the trivia (had too many people cheating) they policed it if they where giving away Alchoal etc. The Biggest issue was the age demo of this cruise 2000 above the age of 60 & only under 140 below under18.. Carnival is normally a family cruise line, this cruise looked more like a Princess. As one other cruiser just under 50 said 'looks like a boat going to heaven or a retirement village. Read Less

My husband & I had never cruised before and wanted something special to celebrate our joint 50th Birthdays. Thomas Cook recommended Celebrity as one of the best and when we looked at the brochure, we loved the destinations for this particular cruise, so booked it! Initially we were disappointed in the size of the room but talking to others, apparently the rooms are bigger than a lot of ships!! We found it frustrating at the post getting on the ship as every person we got passed to wanted to see the same papers the last person looked at BUT it all went smooth enough. We had the classic drinks package 'free' with the cruise yet couldn't get a martini at the martini bar! We asked why as it was on the package and we were are the martini bar, the bar staff told us it was because their martinis were bigger and they used 'better' ingredients, so if you wanted one from them you had to pay or you could go to one of the other bars for one! Very odd i have to say! The food in the San Marco restaurant was amazing, the portions were big enough for us and we felt no need to use or pay for any of the speciality restaurants! We used it for breakfast and dinner! The staff were always happy & friendly in San Marco, nothing was too much trouble! We were disappointed in the outside pools, we thought they would be bigger than there were! There was always sunbeds available but we did notice that the 'good' sunbeds with the thick mattresses were always taken by the same people! The indoor pool area was very very nice, loved the Thalassotherapy pool and we spent most sea days in there rather than outside! We didn't go to many shows but the ones we did see were OK, depends on what you like and what you don't like. We didn't do any of the 'daily activities' as its not our thing, another reason for us to use the indoor pool. The ports were nice, we didn't do the ships tours, we'd already booked tours with Cruising Excursions as recommended again by Thomas Cook, so cant comment on how the ships tours were. We didn't have many children on the cruise, probably about 5 or 6 but for us that was good, that was another reason we chose this particular cruise, we didn't want children running around, that again was our personal choice as our kids have grown up and moved out, having peace to us was good (saying that, the kids that were on were no trouble what so ever) It took us a while to get in to the cruise life but by the end of the cruise, we'd booked again for 2020! Excellent menu and presentation, 5-star service throughout the ship. Fabulous ports of call with very diversified tours. People where all well traveled and open to conversations and friendly. Oceania is an above average, luxury cruise line attracting well traveled, higher educated people all interested in the itinerary and gourmet food services at a high standard. Though this ship offered this environment the ship seems a little Tired and could use some refurbishing again to keep up in this category. The ports where diversified and everyday was filled to exhaustion. With 6 sea days the trip was both relaxing and interesting to sail. Entertainment is not what you choose Oceania for but at this price category they need to improve or may see a decrease in repeat customers who are having other ships that are newer, brighter and offering more choices. Regardless of minor problems we will make Oceania our first choice for a future cruise. Read Less

This was our 5th cruise with Oceania. We chose this particular one for its itinerary, starting in Tokyo and ending in Bangkok. It was the only one we found on an upscale cruise line that covered so much of the coast of Asia in less than 3 weeks. The choice of ports was excellent -- but be aware that it is extremely hot in Saigon and Bangkok in mid-April. The cruise started in Tokyo on March 24, presumably to avoid very chilly weather. The trade-off was the heat at the end of the tour. My husband and I are independent travelers and we never take shore excursions offered by the ship so I can't comment on the quality of the excursions. Instead we wander around on our own (using hop-on hop-off busses) or book through private booking companies -- which I highly recommend in Asia, as there are few signs in English. This cruise was a 50th anniversary trip for us so we splurged on the Owners Suite. The service and accommodations were between "extraordinary" and "over the top." But we found the same to be true at any of the "Concierge" level accommodations, so it's not necessary to book an Owners Suite to feel pampered. Our only complaint was that the quality of the dining experience has declined somewhat since our first cruise on Oceania in 2012. After Norwegian Cruise Line took over Oceania, we noticed some cost-cutting measures, including the quality of the food, which I would describe as "very good," as opposed to "excellent" when we first started cruising with Oceania. Still, I wouldn't hesitate to book a cruise with them, and in fact we have booked another one this September. Read Less

We did a back to back to back Sydney to Yokohama so this review is for the last leg, Hong Kong to Yokohama. The Jewel is now quite old and in need of a refit but provides a good cruising experience with lounges and restaurants to suit all tastes. Our inside cabin was adequate and our cabin steward did his best. Dining was generally good. The two main restaurants were fine, the buffet (Market cafe) often a scrum but the food was good. The speciality restaurants were good. Service was generally good, some outstanding, some poor. Entertainment became a bit samey but we were on the ship for 40 nights so that was to be expected. Ports on this leg of the cruise were great. We did not take any NCL excursions but seldom heard anything good from those who did take them so this is an area on this ship that NCL should look carefully at. Read Less

We did back to back to back Sydney to Yokohama so this review is for the Singapore to Hong Kong part of the cruise. By this time we had had a poor experience Sydney to Singapore. Luckily the Hotel Director Claus left the ship and a new one arrived - Stephen - who was much better. He immediately realised that he had inherited a poor cruise and set about changes which improved the quality of the experience, arranging back to back events and generally sorting out the tendering and port arrangements. We had a much better experience, back to the usual standard we expect from NCL. The ship is in need of a refurb - planned - but generally the experience was good. Cabin was good for an inside. Steward good. Most of the crew were excellent, a few poor experiences but thats how it goes. Entertainment could be improved substantially - 'Dan the Man' not quite the invisible man as he can be but he was also new (from Sydney) so perhaps inherited a poor plan. Our own planned shore excursions were great, NCLs not so and the onboard team needs to be broken up and refreshed. Read Less

We had one for 11 days, then he went on holiday & we had someone else for the rest of the cruise. We couldn’t fault either of them. Our room was always ready when we came back from breakfast & he gave us 2 extra towels every day. Food was lovely. We were in Vivaldi for our main meal 5:30 sitting. I wouldn’t pick that again as it was a bit rushed as next sitting was 7:30. Meals were always hot & served quickly. Medium sized portions , but you could have 2 if you wanted to. The buffet was excellent, great choices, some variety each day, always hot food. Great desserts. Staff in the shops were friendly & helpful, but I didn’t buy much as we were on a budget. We could always get a lounge around the pool, the staff were good at getting rid of stuff that wear just left by lounge hogs. Cons; Staff in some bar areas were inattentive, we always had to find a waiter to take our orders. They were standing around in groups talking a lot of the time. Shops were extremely expensive even for duty free, some things I can get back home cheaper. On the Emerald Princess there seemed to be more of a selection of items to buy at reasonable prices. Having sailed with several other cruise lines, I have to say that the service we received from every single member of the Princess team was first class. Better than we have ever experienced from any other company. That said, there are a few areas where Princess really let themselves down on this trip. The Sapphire is due for a complete refurbishment in the next couple of months so it was no surprise that it is looking a little tired. However, I didn't like the fact that they started doing maintenance work during our trip. There were a couple of areas of the buffet restaurant roped off while something was being done to some large cabinets, right by the entrance. They also did some painting on the top deck without putting any 'wet paint' signs up. We found this out when my wife happened to get paint on a brand new top she was wearing. Although an attempt to dry clean (free of charge) was made, the top was ruined and came back in worse condition. Sanding and varnishing work was also being done on some hand rails around the swimming pool, with guests in very close proximity. Other things that were not so good - The Captain was almost anonymous. The only time we saw him was when he made a very brief welcome speech. He was not seen by any of our party walking the decks or otherwise socialising with the guests. The only time we heard from him was when he announced an itinerary change caused by bad weather. None of the bars stocked slim line tonic water and the Horizon buffet restaurant was perhaps the poorest of its type that I have experienced in a dozen cruises. Apart from Horizon (the buffet restaurant), the restaurant food was of a good standard with plenty of choice most nights. We did try both the speciality restaurants during the cruise, with very different results. Sabatinis was excellent throughout. Great service and fantastic food. The Steakhouse however turned out to be a curtained off section of the Horizon Buffet. The curtains did not stop other guests walking through throughout the meal. We even had one person walk through in their pyjamas! This totally destroyed any ambiance, it was difficult to relax and worst of all, of the six main courses our party had, we had to send two of them back. I would mention two members of the entertainment staff. Ted, the Cruise Director and Amy, the Assistant Cruise Director. Ted is a lovely guy and clearly very intelligent, however, he is in need of a new script. His repertoire when speaking on stage is very unimpressive. "Give me an oooh" and Give me an aaah" does not go down well with a mainly adult audience, a significant percentage of which do not have English as their first language. And as for his jokes - I have never witnessed so many tumbleweed moments. On the other hand, Amy Alderson was a pleasure to know. She made every effort to get to know our group and was absolutely charming. A credit to Princess, I am sure a promotion will not be too far away, she deserves it and I am willing to bet that she tells a better joke than Ted. There were two very talented violinists playing each evening in the atrium. We certainly enjoyed their music, but would it have hurt them to smile occasionally? All performances in the theatre were of a very high standard. The dance troupe were excellent and the visiting artists all very entertaining. Especially David Knight, the Hypnotist. Our stateroom with balcony was comfortable, although I am sure that the shower was shrinking throughout the trip. There was certainly less room in it at the end than there was at the beginning. Perhaps it was me getting bigger!! Adrian, our Stateroom attendant was excellent, very helpful, always smiling and always in the background if we needed him. I did like the idea of the ship holding onto our passports throughout the cruise. They looked after most of the immigration issues, which made getting on and off the boat at all the different locations much easier. However, the issue with Cambodia and visa requirements was very poorly communicated prior to the cruise. This resulted in us spending more on a visa than we needed to, because we had unnecessarily sorted it out before leaving the UK. We only went on one excursion organised by Princess and that was in Borneo, to the Mari Mari museum. Excellent and would recommend. All the other excursions were organised by the company we booked the cruise through. The gym was very busy most mornings, so you need to pick your timings. There was a lack of cycle machines compared to cross trainers, but all equipment was in good condition All in all, a terrific holiday in which the staff of Princess contributed significantly to our enjoyment, for which I thank them.
