Planning my first Alaskan trip was daunting.

Most of us have no idea how genuinely big the state is, and how far apart its most iconic sights are from one another. Once we get our heads around the size of Alaska -- larger than Texas, California and Montana combined -- then we've got to figure out how to cram it all into a holiday.

I guess it shouldn't be a surprise, then, that the default choice for many first-timers is an Alaskan cruise. But does a cruise pack in the most value for an Alaskan holiday?
