I did not select this cruise but joined a friend and discovered this excellent cruise line. We travelled up the Rhône River from Arles to Lyon in Provence and saw storybook views and villages. The tour guides in each location were the best I have ever seen and heard - we got in depth information delivered with delightful humor. My favorites were visiting the Provençal olive grower and his family run processing “plant”, the truffle farmer, Amy, the truffle dog, and the family, and Dominique, the winemaker and his vineyard. There were lots of options for excursions, all inclusive, and for whatever activity level we desired. Best of all was Heloise, the Cruise Manager, but everyone on the ship provided top quality service! Spotlessly clean, many personal touches like flowers in our room upon arrival from our AmaWaterways booking agent in the states, Louise. I was very pleased and I WILL join them again! Read Less

Our expectations for our cruise on the Rhone were high, but to our surprise Avalon exceeded these expectations consistently. The Poetry II provided superb accommodations in the Room 308 Royal Suite. Housekeeping and the wait staff were professional, thorough, and met any request quickly and completely. I would like to single out Jean-Loup Domart, our cruise director. He was professional, entertaining and totally focused on each guest and their comfort and satisfaction with all aspects of the cruise. Specifically, we were astounded by his follow-up on a personal problem that arose. We lost a souvenir hat on the ship and did not realize it until we were in Paris. Jean-Loup took our contact information and said that he would look into it. A month later, I received an email from him saying that the hat was found and he was shipping it to my home. Truly service above and beyond expectations. Jean-Loup represents the guest focus of Avalon and their goal to provide a superb cruise experience from food service, to meaningful and entertaining shore excursions. The typical guestroom is occupied by a couple whose age range is from 40 to 80. Most guests are in their late 60's to early 70's. Most guest are active and energetic and engage in offered activities. It was a diverse crowd form the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Finding a friendly and sometimes entertaining conversation was never an issue and dining companions were diverse and interesting. My wife and I would recommend and Avalon cruise and look forward to future trips on different rivers. Read Less

Firstly a disclaimer this is our first river cruise although we have done a number of cruises on small ships Azamara, Oceana. We embarked in Arle and then went downstream 1 hour to the Camarge. The active excursion by bike was great. Day 2 back to Arle ( where we had independently spent a day) the excursion was great hiking up a limestone mountain and seeing a Van Gogh audiovisual presentation inside a building with images projected onto limestone. Day 3 meandered upstream to Avignon and went to an amazing chocolate factory. So overall the excursions were good to great.. The food was not impressive compared to the other small cruise ships we had been on. One meal the menu offering was a rack of lamb but this turned out to be 2 lamb chops. Several passengers asked the waiter for the rest of their rack of lamb. The cabin we chose the highest level stateroom was nice. Entertainment on board was very limited. One night they had a great group of performers with spanish guitar, and 2 dancers. Read Less

Having been in the travel business for over 49 years, I wanted to try this cruise line and also take a river cruise, which we had never done. We paid full fare. With some small exceptions, it was a perfect vacation. They provided fabulous backpacks and ticket wallet pre-cruise. They met our plane, and transferred us to the hotel, even though we arrived two days early to get acclimated to the new time zone. Ship was beautiful, spotless, and cabin space very well planned, with plenty of storage space for our two huge bags of luggage, as we traveled pre and post cruise. We would have liked more hooks. They provided bathrobes and velour slippers, Each room had a flat screen TV with huge number of channels, with movies, TV series, travel videos. Umbrellas, walking canes, earplugs, Moulton Brown toiletries, and WASHCLOTHS---a rarity in France. Shower space was fabulous compared to our last cruise on a regular cruise ship in March. Just wonderful. The only negative was the chairs in our in-room balcony were too big for the space and really, really uncomfortable. Included tours were excellent, the guides on almost every tour were delightful, charming, humorous, knowledgeable and spoke perfect English, which we followed on our Emerald padded headsets, which you re-charge every day. We booked 3 extra tours for the afternoons, and they were worth every penny, as these were spectacular points of interest visually, and you also got to see the countryside on the way to the destination. I don't think you could take a bad picture at any of the places we visited---we took over 75--- and every single one could be a postcard. Tournon was our least favorite stop, as there is not a tremendous amount there---maybe a cooking class could have been offered? Evening entertainment for us was mostly movies in the room, but we did go to the movie trivia night--where I won the bottle of wine! It was lots of fun, though we wished the evening events started just a bit earlier, as 9:15PM was late when you had to get up early in the morning for the tours. We are not morning people, but we adjusted. Our cruise director Darren, and the activities director Didi (I'm sorry if I have misspelled their names) were very entertaining, helpful, and efficient. Loved these guys! My husband took one of the bike tours, and enjoyed it immensely. Never used the pool, gym, hairdresser, masseuse, or did yoga, so can't comment on those activities. Breakfast had 3 times; early, regular, and quick bite so you could make the tours. Buffet of selections for every taste, but darned near impossible to get a cup of coffee right when you sat down. Don't know why they don't have coffee machines in the dining room, as I ended up getting mine at the machine in the bar and walking it downstairs---not good--- or safe. Lunch buffet was also very good, lots of selections, with choice of two kinds of ice creams with toppings, and sauces--- every day. Always a line for that. Again, getting a non-wine beverage here was also a problem, and I ended up bringing my iced tea down from the bar. However, if you are a wine drinker, you're in great shape on this cruise, as they never stop pouring...….ever. Dinner was our least favorite meal. We advised in advance that we don't eat pork products, veal, and I'm allergic to shellfish. The first night there was nothing on the menu I could eat, so I spoke to the maître d. She advised there was always a choice of a steak, salmon fillet, or chicken breast and Caesar salad. So, we ordered the steak the first night. The Caesar salad came with BACON sprinkled on it (!!!) and the steak was very tough, so we stuck with salmon most nights--though I don't love it, it was tastier than a plain chicken breast. The celebrity chef night was absolutely the best meal of the cruise, and we could have had his menu and bread every night and would have been very, very happy. The dining staff needed more training, as they could not accommodate any special requests, i.e. dressing on the side for the Caesar salad. In fact one night I was told that the Caesar was an entrée! They cannot deviate, and don't understand what you are trying to say. Also, they forgot two special meals at two other tables around us, and one passenger was furious. Dinner is one sitting at 7PM, so I understand the difficulty of serving over 130 people all at once. Maybe a smaller buffet in the bar area would help--- like they do for breakfast. I actually prefer buffets, as I can choose what and how much I eat. Dining portions were very small, but OK for us. Miguel the dining manager was very charming, always cheerful---but he has his hands full training this dining staff. Also, they need to try to smile more, as they always seemed stressed---which they were, I'm sure. If you have never taken a river cruise before, please be aware there is lots and lots of walking, sometimes you have to climb up and down stairs as you cross over other boats you are tied up to. Because you are tied up to them on some days, you cannot raise the shades in your cabin---so the "balcony" becomes unusable. But you are off early and don't spend much time in the cabin on most days. Also, this cruise is not suitable for children, as there are no activities for them. Most of the cruisers, I would guess, were over 60. All in all, an almost perfect vacation. Wish they did a Normandy River Cruise! Read Less

This was our third river cruise with Emerald, having thoroughly enjoyed the two previous ones on the Douro and Rhine, we were not disappointed. Everything went smoothly from beginning to end, largely due, in our opinion to the experience, hard work and dedication of our super (and funny) cruise director Darren (he reminded me of Alan Carr). As on our previous two cruises with Emerald, all meals and the complimentary wines served with lunch and dinner were just superb (one or two of the waiters serving wine seemed more reluctant than others to top-up regularly, but they were easily avoided by moving to a table where one of their more generous colleagues were serving). There was an inclusive excursion at every stop, with local top notch tour guides provided. Every town/city was interesting, we particularly enjoyed Avignon and Viviers, and we found these inclusive tours were enough without going on additional paying excursions in the afternoon. We thought that rather too much cruising was done during the hours of darkness, and it would have been nice to have more opportunities to sit and watch the world go by during the afternoons and evenings, but I'm sure there were probably good logistical reasons for this. We would certainly go on another Emerald river cruise, but are quickly running out of rivers in Europe. I've marked fitness & recreation, entertainment and enrichment activities as excellent, but in all honesty, I didn't avail myself of any fitness facilities and the other two categories are a matter of taste. Having completed one Emerald cruise on the Danube, and been impressed, we decided a second on the Rhone should follow. We were not disappointed! It was the first of this season but the boat, the crew and all hotel staff were bonded as a very competent, friendly and professional team who constantly demonstrated a desire to please. Accommodation, bar and drinks, onboard entertainment, pool/cinema area and especially the food and accompanying wines were all consistently very good. And of course last but not least, the guided land tours and scenery were in excess of expectations. We had a drinks package and struggled thereafter to spend money on board! My wife regrettably made up for it whilst on shore and we came home with marvellous cheeses, mustards, wines and chocolates! Jana the cruise Director and DD the cruise Entertainment director were superb and got to know all 130 passengers personally and treated them as both individuals and as members of the Team Emerald. We chose tis cruise with friends for a relaxing late summer cruise in France and despite the loss of our luggage we very much enjoyed the cruise. The Cruise Director (Jana) did a great job through out the cruise and helped us retrieve our bags, it appears that AF loose bags very frequently at CDG and also lost one of our bags on our return journey. The crew where very helpful and nothing was a problem for them they are credit to Emerald. The ship was spotless and the rooms very nice, service in the restaurant was good along with excellent food except for the first gala dinner with the lamb main course more like mutton than lamb My only other criticisms are the need for more free time to be allowed during the included trips and the coach transfer from the airport that meant we had to wait around for other flights to arrive to fill up the coach rather than proceeding after arrival to the ship. We will certainly consider joining Emerald on our next river cruise. Read Less

This was our first European river cruise & the first with Emerald Waterways. The only problem we encountered was our arrival at Heathrow airport where we had booked assistance due to the fact that my Husband had had an unexpected operation on his foot a few days before we came away. All seats had been block booked by River voyages so we were unable to change them. and the assistance was not as we expected. On arrival at Marseille my husband was expected to walk about 500 yds to the coach, no wheelchairs & the ground was hot ! Fortunately after a lot of questioning as I might add we had informed river voyages & emerald of this problem we had well beforehand , a very kind taxi was arranged to take my husband and another passenger also with a similar problem to the coach for free, which we were very grateful for. Once on the boat a wheelchair was provided which made life a lot easier, but unfortunately we encountered the same thing on our arrival back at Lyon Airport having left the taxi from the ship. The assistance was non existant & we were told we wouldn't get any until after we had checked in. The problem with that was that there was no one at the BA counter for about two hours after we got there. When we did eventually get to check in as we couldn't pre book our seats they were issued at check in because again they were block booked so we were given seats at the back of the aircraft which when we asked if they could be changed there was a flat 'no no'! Fortunately as we approached the aircraft door the first officer was there & my Husband displayed his dissatisfaction & he was able to instruct the crew to find a more suitable seat for him & a wheelchair to help him to his seat, to which he was very grateful. On arrival at Heathrow the assistance company then said that we weren't even on his books, when we knew that it was not true as we had had an email confirming it!! So unfortunately that was the damper to our holiday , but the actual cruise was amazing the staff from the captain to the porters were excellent, & couldn't do enough to help. The cabin was spotlessly clean --as was the rest of the ship, the food superb, & a totally different menu each day. Hotel Manager & Cruise Director kept everyone 'on their toes',[ loved the quirky stories daily given by the cruise director] , restaurant service was very good, & the entertainment was just right, not over the top, but suitable for the cruise & passengers it carried. All ports & shore excursions were good, but unfortunately due to my husbands foot, we were unable to do all the walking they entailed, but having said that with the aid of the wheelchair we were able to go ashore by ourselves, which we were quite happy with. As much as we love children it was nice not to have any on board! Despite all our problems at either end we would definitely go again , hopefully next time without injuries to hamper us . We will certainly recommend Emerald Waterways to friends, & hopefully join another one in a few years time! Read Less

Chose itinerary. Loved Provence countryside. Guided tours were always well paced, informative, and the guides were pleasant and very entertaining. The ship was contemporary simple; beautiful really with all the orchids scattered about. Can't say enough about the responsiveness of all staff on the ship. Cruise director, Tony, was outstanding, very involved, always a presence, and attentive to any questions or issues. Our bags were handled every step of the way; from our arrival to our departure. We enjoyed onboard tastings....cheese, wine, and confections. As a frequent large ship cruiser I found the river cruise by comparison to be more relaxing, the ship more friendly, the service more personal. No problems with motion sickness as the ride was smooth and motionless. The many locks along the way were a surprise and added to our adventure. A few hours at an outdoor market offered up fresh bread, cheese, dried meats, honey, nugat, and fresh picked strawberries and other produce. Thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and will consider this type of adventure again! Read Less

LIBERTÉ REVIEW My family (5 couples) have been taking annual river cruises for about 7 years now. This is the first time we have tried Emerald and we did not know what to expect. We had tried Vikings and Avalon in the past. The rivership is very new and has a sleek modern design. A delightful addition is the swimming pool at the back of the vessel that is thought fully stocked with cookies, tea and chocolate drinks. At night, the pool is transformed and doubles as a movie theater. The rooms have relatively adequate storage (as compared to other river ships) but the storage space under the bed is too low and large luggage cannot be stored under. Sheets were crisp, mattresses and pillows were very comfortable. Special thanks to Andreaa, Tibor, Ivstan, Martina, Mearead and Daniel who gave excellent service. The food in this cruise is distinctively better than any of the cruises we have had and if the other Emerald riverships would have the same gastronomic quality, this would be a huge draw for us to return. Kudos to Chef Teo! Breakfast is a buffet of everything you would expect from a Continental setting. Regarding the sightseeing tours. There is so much to see in Burgundy and Provence. Arles, Avignon and Lyon are particularly lovely. Standout tour guides were young Alexia in Arles and raconteur/fab opera singer Emmanuel in Avignon. The wine lecture by somalier Guillaume in Tournon was especially informative and made for a very nice afternoon. Mâcon was the least interesting of the tours, in my opinion. The tour guide did his best to give us information about the place but there was not too much to see and remember. Perhaps Emerald could think of a way to make Mâcon worth visiting aprart from the usually sight seeing. Our experience in Emerald has inspired us to plan another cruise with the company. Good work! We chose to cruise to include our anniversary and see some wonderful places in Southern France new to us. The boat was clean, modern and contained all the facilities anyone would need. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The food was good and we enjoyed all the chef's recommendations apart from a couple of deserts. Needless to say the wines were much enjoyed with meals and flowed freely. The cabin was fine and cleaned every day but the 'balcony' was inside not outside the cabin. The destinations and excursions were excellent, seeing the bulls running in Arles a particular highlight. Avignant was a lovely historical destination and Lyon was a revelation for a busy town. I would recommend this cruise and think it was excellent value. The free use of bicycles was an original one to us and although we didn't make use of them, those who did really enjoyed it. Read Less

I booked this river cruise on an offer I found on-line, it being the last available cabin, on the lowest deck of the boat. It was on the Rivers Rhone and Saone. The cabin was well fitted and comfortable, but only had a high window. There was a lift to the two decks above, which was a help when going for meals or drinks. The food was excellent, quite the best I have had, with buffet breakfast and lunch, and a five-course evening dinner, and wine or beer was included. There was even a warm swimming pool which was pleasant and enjoyable. We were taken out each day on an included excursion to the local town, with a guide to tell us all about it. There were also optional extra outings in the afternoon. A pianist played in the lounge each evening, and later people danced. The service on the boat was impeccable, and all the staff were pleasant and helpful. Having the tips included in the price was an extra bonus. My only disappointment was not being able to make my morning tea, but it was available in the lounge. Transport to and from the airport was included too, and arrivals and departures were managed very efficiently. Overall it was a perfect holiday and I would certainly consider travelling with Emerald Waterways again on a different river. Read Less

Recommended by travel agent it was our first cruise and we were not disappointed! The embarkation was smooth, but we had the opportunity to observe the whole embarkation process which was extremely professional with the whole of the crew engaged in the operation. The ship was all we could have wished for and the cabin suited our needs perfectly. The dining experience was 1st class, good food and wine served promptly, efficiently, and cheerfully by a very professional team of waiters. The entertainment was good with the staff show on Thursday night being the highlight. The service throughout was of the highest order from what was clearly, from the captain down a professional and highly motivated team. The shore excursions are not really our "thing" as we prefer a more informal approach. Our only disappointment was the very limited daylight sailing which prevented us enjoying the French countryside. In conclusion we had a throughly enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Read Less

We chose this ship as it was new, had a pool and was going where we wanted to go, However we were disappointed that most of the days sailings were at night and we wanted to sail during the day. I appreciate that some people want to do all the tours and excursions however it would be best to perhaps just do one either in the morning or one in the afternoon and cruise the rest of the time and park up at night. We were very disappointed with the lack of policing of the dress code in the restaurant in the evening - either have one or not but if you do then do not let people in with shorts or mobile phones switched on during dinner! The crew, cabins, pool, and food were all excellent - lunches were better than dinners in my opinion and we loved the choice. Also do not let people book the pool area for cocktail parties during the evening as that does not allow other passengers to use the facilities. Maybe use the owners suite lounge if the group is small and that cabin is not being used. Also when on board for the first time maybe offer passengers an upgrade at a discounted price to fill the cabins maybe a way of getting extra money in. Many thanks Read Less

Excellent Cruise Director Jana, very professional. Good quality staff with only a few exceptions in the bar and restaurant. Low deck cabin very comfortable Air conditioned throughout Quality of food very good, gala dinners were the best, Lunch very nice, plenty of choice. Breakfast the same. Older Clientelle generally so don't expect lively night life Quality of cocktails very good compared to Sea cruise with Celebrity Excursions mostly walking except in Challon Recommend wine tasting in Tournon Only down side is that low bridges especially in Lyon, but not only, result in top deck being completely cleared and no access for guests for periods of time. Shades on deck are only really nets not full suns screens so be careful on very hot summer days Premium package was included offer for us as incentive to book. Boat takes 138 but were only about 100 on our cruise, would be concerned about capacity of Bar and restaurant if the boat is full. Very smooth transfers. A wonderful new ship. It was our first experience of a river cruise and found that, although the cabin was a bit smaller than imagined it was very comfortable and very well kept by the housekeeping team. The food was wonderful and very well presented and served. There was a full itinerary of excellent activities/excursions. We particularly loved Arles, Des Baux, Pont du Gard and Beaune. The service was excellent. From the Cruise Director, Simona, who was excellent and seemed to work 24 hours a day, to the washer ups - everyone was great. Particular mention must go to Gabriella, Mihaela, Robert, Lewis, Stephanie, Adrian and Zoltan (along with the young man who worked alongside him whose name we unfortunately didn't get). They were all excellent and our thanks go to them all. We would definitely recommend this cruise to anyone and will look for at taking another trip with the same company in the future. Read Less

We chose this particular trip as a 'taster' for more in the future. As beginners we only had the Emerald brochure at first to give us any idea about life 'on board' but from the very first time stepping on board we were welcomed as VIPs and this continued until we left the ship a week later. The organised walks round the local towns were enjoyable and informative. All the local guides were highly professional and were very comfortable talking to us in English. Back on board the service was impeccable in every way, cheerful and enthusiastic staff who really went out of their way to make the cruise the delight it was. We would like to make special mention about the catering. The food was beautifully presented and the accompanying wines from the region well chosen. One major annoyance was the inordinate time the Emerald Head office took to answer calls by telephone - often over 20 minutes of repeated sales blurb. When eventually answered by a 'real person' they were polite and helpful. The office appeared to be understaffed. Read Less

The catering staff deserve a special mention all the meals we had where very good and the service faultless. Would we do lt again?,we would love too. It was so cool to get up in the morning and watch the port activity. There were cookies and goodies in the lounge at all times. Coffee, unfortunately tasted like instant coffee. The same can be said for the cappuccino machine. Our room was quite comfortable. Our bed was extremely comfortable. We couldn't feel any movement when we were under way.
