We wanted a small ship cruising through Provence. We got that and more. Every town we visited was interesting. I thought that there might be too much repetition but in fact each town had its own unique story to tell. Of course I knew that Rome had conquered Gaul didn't think about the extent of their settlements. The Coliseum and forum in Arles were well worth the visit. Avignon was larger than I had imagined. We had an excellent outdoor meal there opposite the Hôtel de Ville. The local guides were very informative. Our cabin was just the right size. The food on board was excellent and interesting . Our fellow guests were all very nice and only a few from the US so we got an interesting perspective of how we are viewed by people from the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. We enjoyed it so much now looking for a cruise from Austria or Switzerland West to the Netherlands. Read Less

GreatValue for such a beautiful itinerary. Great care was taken, however dinner seating was much too late for us. There wasn't much to do after dinner, so we ended up going to bed on a full stomach. Not good. The food was outstanding, and wait staff were very attentive. Itinerary was good. Shore excursions were great. Our room was at water level, with a large window. It was so cool to get up in the morning and watch the port activity. There were cookies and goodies in the lounge at all times. Coffee, unfortunately tasted like instant coffee. The same can be said for the cappuccino machine. Our room was quite comfortable. Our bed was extremely comfortable. We couldn't feel any movement when we were under way. Personally I like wave action it rocks me to sleep. Friends we were traveling with said they had sailed on Viking river cruises, and Avalon was far superior in comparison. Read Less

We joined in Arles for a week up to Lyon in October 2016. All the villages are beautiful and the cruise is professionally organised. The cruise director does an amazing job keeping everyone happy , he was the best director you could have! Nice only having 130 people on the boat,. All the meals are serviced beautifully and first quality - only would prefer if dinner was not so late ,often 7.30pm is too late ! The cabins are well designed with all amenities and the bed super comfy. Nice sliding door for balcony to enjoy the fresh air. The aircon is quiet and very efficient. The crew are excellent and they arrange for yet est tour guides at all the ports. Each tour guide added their own local flavour and eeach guide was tops. Good selection of dinners and the meal quality, every time is first rate. Good audio systems for the tours. Read Less

A nice boat. The staff were very good. Some of the waiters are burned out. One saying they didn't have coffee cream when I had had it a few times before. I challenged him and he came up with it! Housekeeping was very good. Food 7/10. Stateroom, very tight but if organized it worked. Bathroom tiny! The Avalon tours were too mnay people of a wide range in demographics and very pricey. Look to venture out and hire personal guide with tripadvisor as a suggestion. Some kick back engine odor , We had middle stateroom that was nice being at water level. Geerally an average trip, no real issues. Nice captain and management team. Very clean digs. Wait staff accomodated people with birthdays etc. with a festive parade and a cake. Entertainment was so so. Port docking was good and quite accessible to points of interest so you could walk around. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it. We coached to Arles from Cannes where our tour gathered and under the direction of our tour director Monica we arrived and were settled in our cabins in good order. All of our guides over the next 8 days were excellent. After doing a tour in Arles we went to the Van Gogh Museum where 31 paintings of the master were on loan from Amsterdam, just spectacular. The food on board, the service, the attention to our well being was wonderful.Of course in travelling there are always some problems , these were taken care of immediately. Highlights for me , Pont Du Gard the town of Uzes Avignon Viviers, where we walked to a Cathedral and there was an organ recital. The market in Tourlon. Wine tasting at the Chateau Pierclos in Macon. We had to stay 2 nights on Affinity in Lyon because of the high level of the river and we did our tour from there before we departed by coach to Beaune and then Paris. We enjoyed the Pullman Hotel in Paris and took the Illumination Tour, Paris by night and it was a different perspective in seeing the City,I highly recommend it. The staff and crew of Affinity made the difference 0n our trip and I certainly would travel Avalon again. Cheers Dan Read Less
