Although I am a regular reader of reviews I have never before felt the need to write one myself. We have always taken the view that you can’t please all the people all the time and there will always be some professional complainers. We do not fall into that category. So having cruised with P&O eight times in the last four years on all their ships I think we are capable of offering a balanced view of expectations and a benchmark for comparison purposes. Our experiences have always been favourable with no complaints, resulting in repeat bookings. Having booked this cruise some 18 months ago mainly because of the destinations it was disappointing to receive an email four days before departure advising that one of the ports of call (Messina) would be cancelled because essential repair work need to be carried out in Malaga. Not a deal breaker in itself, although we have experienced P&O cancelling ports at the last moment at least twice before, but what followed certainly tested any loyalty we feel to P&O. Somehow the essential work (to a propeller) did not prevent the ship arriving in Malaga a full 18 hours ahead of schedule, the work then ran into four days with little or no communication from the Bridge on the delay. It was obvious to all that the work had been pre planned for some time with a diving team having to be flown in from the US to complete the work. Draw your own conclusions why the work had to be done in the middle of a cruise when it was known about some considerable time before. This led to the ships Customer Services Manager issuing a letter to guests “for Insurance purposes for any potential claim” confirming that “no refunds or compensation had been given by P&O” for the changes. At best it was a clumsy and misguided attempt to deflect responsibility. Sorry P&O but my contract is with you and I am not going to make a claim on my insurance (even if I could) and incur increased premiums because of your inability to provide the contracted service. The senior management on the Bridge were conspicuous by their absence with communication poor at best, particularly during the delay in Malaga. In fairness communication did improve slightly after Malaga but we think that was because of all the complaints. We then had an outbreak of norovirus, (P&O claimed it was brought onboard at Southampton). For the record, neither we nor a number of other guests we spoke with had been asked to complete the health declaration at embarkation, (a similar situation occurred when we travelled with P&O last March). If this simple procedure had been complied with perhaps the virus outbreak would have been prevented or contained. On a positive note there did seem to be a plentiful supply of sun beds. We were not sure if this was because more had been provided or because half the guests were struck down with norovirus and the other half down at reception complaining! Throughout the 19 days there was continuous “essential” maintenance work being carried out, mainly on the lifeboats, with intolerable noise from early morning, it was like being on a building site. Lets be clear, this was not the routine maintenance that you always encounter on a cruise but full blooded heavy duty work. It got so bad guests were calling it the Maintenance Cruise. This essential work continued right up to the last sea day. One night we were sat in the Crows nest at midnight to the sound of sanding or similar accompanying the music. Of course this raises the question of how you define essential; essential for safety which raises questions, or essential to P&O and their profitability over the enjoyment of guests. Incidentally, it was quite ironic that following this “essential” lifeboat maintenance one of the tenders could not be lifted back in to position because of a ”technical problem”, necessitating a two and half hour delay in leaving Dubrovnik. You could not make it up. The ship has absolutely no wow factor, no focal point in terms of atrium and we felt it had a bit of a strange layout, consequently there was no atmosphere. Much of the ship looked tired, with warped decking particularly Deck 10 Port side which was dangerous, dirty tatty window frames in the restaurant, just to mention a couple of areas. Most public areas appeared clean on first glance, but having said that we often saw cups, glasses and ashtrays that were not cleared away from outside areas for at least 24 hours. We only saw a vacuum cleaner being used twice and had doubts that our cabin had seen one throughout the 19 days. Likewise we saw litter on a carpeted stairwell that stayed there for at least two full days. Many of the staff seemed unhappy (it was almost as if something had happened prior to departure which had upset them all), we felt there were fewer staff and certainly our steward had a huge workload. Generally the Medina restaurant appeared disorganised with long waits to be seated, further long waits to be served and then food which was mediocre in relation to our previous experiences. At times we felt it was a training ship for new recruits as the food and service differed from meal to meal. One final point, P&O have a dress code, please apply it or dispense with it. Some people were going to dinner in tatty jeans and T-shirt, not quite the dress code P&O advertise. So there you have it. A cruise we had been looking forward to for 18 months proved to be a major disappointment. Thankfully the destinations did not disappoint (not fussed on Cagliari), however the bits in between left a lot to be desired. We did meet some lovely people, (one who had booked the world cruise on the ship for 2020 and was cancelling), and without exception they all said they were bitterly disappointed with the ship and their experiences mirrored many of the aspects I have mentioned. By the way I have just read a review of the same cruise on CC congratulating the Capt and crew for their outstanding service saying what a great cruise and criticising a negative, whinging hostile group of passengers – mostly senior. Well I don’t fit into any of those categories (far from it), but there are times when you do have to call out poor service, shoddy communication and a lack of respect for guests enjoyment. I leave you to draw your own conclusions but if the majority of reviews and online comments about the cruise are negative then it says a lot. For the first time ever I have not been contacted by P&O to provide a review of the cruise. I wonder why? Would we cruise on Arcadia again? Most definitely not. Will we cruise with P&O again? Well we have two further cruises booked with them and are waiting their response to a formal complaint. We will see how they respond and then decide. If you have already booked to go on Arcadia I really hope that you have a better experience. If you are thinking on going on Arcadia my advice is to keep reading all the reviews and then make your decision based on the balance of reviews. Good luck. Read Less

Booked a year early as a medical report put this to be probably my last cruise. Period. First I received a few days in advance that one port would be eliminated due to repairs needed to be done in Malaga meaning an extra day annoyed! Then off we go with a dicky propulsion unit needing divers etc in Malaga Malaga was fine as we knew we had an extra day but soon after arrival we were told that we had to stay another day meaning 3.6 days in Malaga ! See my extra info on divers later. So we left Malaga but the next announcement was we had norovirus which started to kill the pleasure even more. We raced at 22 knots to venice . It was just as we left Venice we met the USA divers who told a slightly different story . The Malaga stop had not had Spanish diving approval which took some time before two faults we found . The repairs needed that extra day after all but even then the divers explained they had to dive in Venice BUT these was only allowed with Italian diver plus. The divers were leaving Venice to check out the bits at split and that is where I did not see them any more. P&O never explained all this and generally were poor in information . The norovirus controls were lifted at about 2 thirds of the cruise ! So P&O will probably point at their terms of business in removing a ports for repairs and Put norovirus down to other reasons. As this was to be my last cruise I can only explain that after a multicruise life this was a different P&O and a poor show even though some items were good. As regards the Arcadia as a ship I comment it is poor with 30 seat only cinema, a dining room aft which to my 91 year old near cabin user in B2 as against my B22 Was a trek ! The spa helped my poor feet in place of a massage due to walking round Malaga on a Sunday with not much open. I,m home sad at this last cruise and leaving my view of modern P&O to be forgotten. Nothing can compensate for that last bad cruise but nothing likely to come....will tell you if! Read Less

We chose this cruise for the ports of call. Just before departure we were advised that we would spend 3 and a half days in Malaga to repair the ship Azipod which was damaged on a previous cruise. Why was the ship not fixed before? Every port of call was a disaster because we were late at every port and had to suffer more crowds of tourists than expected. Messina was cancelled as was our tour in Venice. We were not impressed. Maintenance was a continual activity on the prom deck every day and the noise of tools could be heard inside the ship, the general state of this ship was very poor and generally tired. The food in the main restaurant was no better than a one star place, tasteless, lacking imagination and rather boring. Glasses were not clean. Norovirus started on day 3 and remained for most of the cruise.Entertainment was mediocre and only 2 speakers in 19 days. Service was average and it seemed as if there had been a reduction in the numbers of staff in the bars.Cabins are in need of updating and rather beige.The ships tour presenter was extremely condescending to passengers. We paid a lot of money for what is advertised as a luxury cruise experience, we beg to differ after our experience and its debatable we would ever use P&O again. Firstly I feel the need to thank but also congratulate Captain Ashley Cook and his entire crew onboard the Arcadia for their outstanding service on what was a VERY ‘testing’ cruise to Venice that left Southampton on the 24th June. Along with the vital and technically brilliant repair to one of her Azipod propeller seals calling for an extended stay in Malaga, there was an outbreak of Norovirus onboard (thanks clearly to passengers embarking with it and still not washing their hands throughout the cruise) along with issues with mounting a tender back onboard as well as an unfortunate Medivac situation which meant for a very early arrival in Venice… But contrary to most other passengers on-board, we would like to say we felt each situation was handled professionally and as smoothly as humanly possible. We strongly feel the crew should be commended not only for their efforts, but also for their extreme patience, with what must easily have been the most negative and hostile group of passengers (and dare I say most 'senior') we have ever experienced in my history of nearly 20 cruises, who to put simply got on the ship with a big chip on their shoulder just because one port needed to be cancelled due to the repair. They then proceeded to be devoid of any understanding that not everything will always go to plan on ship and just moaned and whinged for the rest of the holiday REALLY bringing down the atmosphere all over the ship and exhausting the crew... Anyway! Overall we had a great time! Excellent staff pretty much without exception - but I am sure part of this is if you treat them with respect you get the same in return. Our Cabin Steward 'Harish' couldn't have been more polite, efficient and friendly. Food in the main restaurant and buffet was good on the most part - although the main menus do seem to have been 'dumbed' down a little in the last year or so. Treated ourselves to the Ocean Grill and Sindhu on a couple of occasions and was impressed. Entertainment from the Headliners in the fantastic and comfortable Palladium Theatre was FIRST CLASS! Mr Tinkerton's Circus worthy of special mention - probably the best show I have ever seen on any ship! Congratulations to P&O for clearly investing heavily in this side of things. However, after seven wonderful cruises on her over the last 8 years with a further two booked including the full World Cruise in 2021, we have become very accustomed to Arcadia herself never disappointing us. Arguably the best-looking ship in the fleet with a lovely blend of features and facilities, we were admittedly shocked and saddened by her general exterior condition as well as some lack of maintenance, care and attention to some of her public spaces as well as private cabins and their balconies. We were assured this was being addressed and we look forward to seeing this on our next couple of cruises which we are very much looking forward to. But in just one last thought, perhaps in P&O's approach of marketing their cruises as a 'holiday' where it’s all about the destination instead of the journey, people’s respect for the ships is not would it should be as, if it wasn’t for the atmosphere these passengers created, it would probably have been one of top 5 cruises we have ever done. We had been wanting to try another cruise line and this P&O visit to the Mediterranean fitted in with with this. Arriving at the Cruise terminal at the appointed time meant a swift processing and rapid boarding even if the cabins were not ready. When we were able to access ours we found clean, the bed looked good and the bathroom was fine. The cases arrived shortly after so we were into unpacking when the call for life boat drill came. Our muster station was the Palladium theatre along with countless other. Unfortunately the place we chose had steep steps, The drill was straightforward and included putting on a life jacket. As we had opted for Freedom Dining and we had been advised to get to the upper deck of the Meridian early so we had a chance of a table for 2, we queued up half an hour early. Using this tactic we always had the same table for two and were we well looked after by James & Michael. We tried lunch once in the Meridian but this did not offer the soup and salad we like. The Belvedere was huge, daunting and difficult to find what we wanted. Thereafter we had a snack in the cabin and a coffee in the Vivo cafe. The menus are lengthy in the Meridian. It rapidly became clear that all meat varied from tough to very tough so we almost always had fish.On one occasion the fish was impenetrable and was replaced with properly cooked one which was as palatable as my wife’s. For some nights there were fancy menus designed by Marco Pierre White or a Chef’s special. We had a glass of wine one night and my red was not fit to be drunk. We used the Cafe Vivo which was good value and served Costa coffee at the right temperature. On this cruise most of the time people were out side enjoying the sun. We did notice that the two seats in the Art Gallery were invariable taken, the being the only sitting places that were free of waiters bring to sell drinks. Due to a “technical problem” so the email from P&O we would be spending an extra day in Malaga. The technical problem turned out to be fishing gear fouling a propeller and also turned out to require much more time and we actually sailed at 1205 am on the fifth day. Malaga was the one port on the itinerary that we did not want to go to. P&O (Carnival) stated that there would be no compensation for this or missing the call at Messina beyond a token gesture about Spanish taxes on drinks. A letter to this effect was delivered to our cabin with the implication that we should claim on our insurance for missing Messina. Claiming on the insurance means that the premium will rise to cover this and I do not pay for expensive policies so that Carnival can avoid facing the cost of compensating us for our loss of enjoyment. A knock on of the prolonged stay was that we had to fit in 3 formal nights in 5 days so these nights were nothing special. There was an out break of norovirus which was a brought under control speedily. However the hand sanitisation was not enforced at every restaurant and not easily seen in the bars and cafe. Indeed at one the officer (maitre d’) made no effort whatsoever to help those of us who wanted to us the sanitiser before entering a restaurant he was in charge of. The rest of the cruise was blessed with calm seas so maximum speed could be maintained and the time in the remaining ports was as planned. However it was hot with Cagliari being over 35 degrees. Disembarkation was relatively painless. We are giving P&O another chance as we were able to relax and do as we pleased. Ports: Malaga. Shuttle bus to centre or a longish walk. Interesting for a day Venice. Ordered ticket never arrived. Split: Used the free shuttle bus which was a good move as the walk looked as though it dodged ferry terminals and a bus station. Diocletian's Palace was well worth seeing and is free. Dubrovnik. Anchor port but the tenders were both frequent and easy to use and much better than a shuttle bus as we were landed on the edge of the old town. Well worth exploring but pick up a map. Cagliari. Far too hot so we did not explore it. We did find an air conditioned cafe at the top of a department store. Gibraltar. Afternoon call. Walked into town as the queues for the shuttle seemed lengthy and it only gets you so far. Read Less

Our first cruise & chosen as it covered the date of our 50th wedding anniversary. From start to finish we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so much so that we have booked this ship for our next cruise. The cabin was comfortable, the crew extremely friendly & nothing was too much trouble. The the evening theatre cast " The Headliners" were very professional & put on some first class shows. Food was plentiful with a choice between the buffet & Meridian restaurant, we had early dining & found the menu covered every taste. Meals in the main were very good & the desserts far too tempting. There were plenty of activities to choose from depending on your taste. We didn't book any on-board shore excursions as we prefer to do our own thing. Enjoyed our ports of call but disappointed on missing out on the Azores but due adverse weather forecast the Captain had no choice but to change our last ports of call. Read Less

was our 50th wedding anniversary, decided on this one to celebrate, we had a lovely time made some lovely friends in table sharing, crew were great and friendly, our cabin crew and table waiters were really great people who could never do enough for us. we enjoyed the evening entertainments, especially the "headliners" who were very professional. but indeed all the entertainment were first class in our view, the weather in the Canaries was really nice, 25 c and blue skies, we had nice days out during our own thing, and then went back onto the sundeck, lovely relaxing days, sad to miss out on the Azores, but the captain explained it was due to bad weather and he was taking into account the welfare of all on board, which -everyone we spoke to agreed, it was just one of those things, we went instead to Cadiz and the Vigo in Spain. still enjoyable. we thought the dining experience was nice, the Meridian dining at night, with a nice and a relaxed buffet style at any time if you wanted it toward top deck, all in all great experience. embarkation and disembarkation was so easy, so much easier than flying. thanks guys Read Less

My wife and l wished to go back to Praidi Vitoria in the Azores as the last time we visited the lsland it was raining so hard we did not get the chance to appreciate it. We booked on Arcadia as she was visiting Prai di Vitoria and Ponta Delgada,sailing on 21st November 2018 which we realised was a slight gamble with the weather at that time of year. The boarding of the ship went very smoothly and it was from the City terminal,Southampton which we had never sailed from before. Our cabin was a P B grade inside and we have used this type of cabin before so no great surprises as it works for us . The one surprise we did have was that in the midships section on B deck it was the only inside cabin and opposite us was the top of the range suites. The position of the cabin meant easy walking distance to both the Crows Nest and the Belvedere buffet restaurant. As it turned out it was not a good choice as the cabin was really noisy not just motion of the ship which we expect but on one side was a locker where they stored bottles and cans etc and next to it was a door to possibly an air con room? Which rattled all the while and on the other side a stewards pantry which also seemed to have extra noise . l mentioned this to reception and they sent someone up who seemed to think it was just ship motion and of course he came in the day time not the middle of the night. They did offer to move us down to G Deck which is not where we like to be so we declined and spent the cruise with ear plugs in and very little sleep at night. So personally we would not recommend that cabin and thought it was graded too high for its position but it was our choice to stay so we cannot complain. Regarding the cruise it all went well to Lisbon then the Canary Islands but after we had visited Madeira with a welcome overnight we had the news that we would not be visiting the Azores due to really bad weather coming across the Atlantic and would now be going to Cadiz and Vigo in Spain as an alternative. Although very disappointed we think it was a wise decision by the Captain and we did seem to keep ahead of any really rough weather and whenever it was rough at all the Arcadia seemed to handle it very well with the stabilisers out. Our call to Vigo was made that bit more enjoyable as the ship stayed till 10pm so we could go ashore and see the Xmas lights , then as we left we were advised the Bad weather was catching us up so the ship put on extra speed and we arrived in Southampton on Thursday evening instead of Friday morning. We have only given a low rating as it was not quite the cruise we booked for other than the bad choice of cabin everything was more or less good. We did freedom dining and found the food good and the revamped crows nest was nice either in the day or at night. The entertainment was very poor except for the Headliners theatre company who we thought very good considering some of them where on their first tour. The Captain was very informative keeping us up to date on weather and destination and the library was well stocked with books so we could relax and enjoy the cruise Read Less

This was my and my husband’s honeymoon – having never done a cruise before we did not know what to expect and so this is an honest review from first time cruisers ! Embarkation This was swift and well organised. Having arrived at the Cruise Terminal around midday with an embarkation time of 2.30, we were lucky to be sat in Arcadia’s Belvedere Restaurant at 1.45 having lunch with our room ready soon after. Disembarkation This was dealt with very well. We were at our allocated place at 9.45am and in our car by 10.10am Dining There are two main places to dine – Meridian and Belvedere (the latter being the buffet). We dined at The Meridian on 3 occasions and found the food to be average. We had salmon on two occasions and each time it was severely overcooked (crusty almost). It was also disappointing that some of the specified ingredients were not actually included within the meals – ie crab salad consisted of just carrot and onion (no crab !), and a sponge with a hazelnut crumble and a praline wafer had no wafer and just a whole hazelnut placed on top of the sponge ?? We knew that by choosing Freedom Dining we may well be given a pager if there was no available table so that we could “enjoy a drink in the piano bar”. Each time we ate in the Meridian we got there as it opened and were immediately given a pager and had to wait nearly an hour each time. On two occasions of waiting such a length for a table for two we were made to sit on a table for four (didn’t mind this but surprised after waiting especially). Also when you are shown to your seat you walk past many empty tables which just makes one wonder whether being given a pager is to make you spend money at the bar ? The food in the Belvedere Restaurant is also only average – again fish being put out for guests to eat already well overcooked (boquerones completely inedible like cardboard and already burnt salmon). Also there are two rows of food shielded by a plastic screen. Whilst it is appreciated that the screen is to ensure germs are kept away from food, it is also impossible to reach the food at the back and the chefs did not attempt to assist ! The carvery consisted of a small joint of meat with re-cooked frozen roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese with bland, watery carrots and swede – no other vegetables apart from brussel sprouts one day. Also the Belvedere, for some of the evening, was half shut off to paying passengers so that the crew could eat. This was ridiculous as passengers were having to chase free tables and some even had to eat by the Neptune Pool when the half of the shut off Belvedere only contained about 6 crew members ??? Also the air con is on full blast in The Belvedere making it freezing to sit and eat Entertainment The theatre has shows at 8.45 and 10.30 and we understand that these are new timings. However we could not see a show until the fourth night as unless you “claimed your seat” at about 7.30 you did not stand a chance of seeing the show at 8.45. We were told by other passengers that the previous timings for shows worked very well for passengers. There is music at other venues – ie Crow’s Nest, the Rising Sun and the Globe – but these are only for about 30 minutes at a go and were usually on all at the same time and so there are times within the evening that there is no music/entertainment at all. As to the Globe, this is way too small and The Retreat is a waste of space according to other passengers being used only by the dance instructors. The casino was never used, on our trip, by passengers and we felt extremely sorry for the numerous members of staff just standing around for hours on end each night. Black Tie Events We enjoy dressing up – who doesn’t – but we were offended one night in the Crow’s Nest. Unlike others going into the Meridian Restaurant we had dressed up. However due to being overwarm and nowhere to place his suit jacket, my husband left it in our cabin after our meal. We went to the Crow’s Nest for a drink only to be asked to leave because of no jacket ! Despite my husband obviously wearing suit trousers and a tie it was still not good enough. We explained that it was too hot for a jacket and were told that as long as he had it by his side it would be acceptable !! Really -what was the difference in having it by the side or not wearing it !!! RIDICULOUS The Black Tie Gala Dance in The Globe was also poor. We attended the second one only to find it was really a night for the dance instructors to tell everyone what dance they could do and not for general enjoyment of those who did not wish to do The Waltz or whatever Accommodation The ship had a major refurb last year. Well our Deluxe Balcony Cabin was ok – nothing special, dated and in need of modernisation. The balcony was rusty and the panels between balconies were extremely noisy – wooden wedges are used to stop the rattling but these don’t last long before falling out ! Our cabin keys did not work on three occasions and we were told not to place them next to our mobile phones – we had not done this ! In fact the last time they did not work we visited Reception who for some reason already had the new ones ready for us – how did they know that our keys were not working ?? Alcohol Since booking our cruise 16 months ago P&O’s alcohol policy has changed in that you can only bring on 1 litre each of spirits each. They claim that this is in line with other cruise lines and also to ensure that no passengers become unruly – however they are more than happy to sell alcohol to you ! As to cocktails – don’t bother buying them. They may seem a reasonable price but they are not as if you watch them being made no actual measures of spirit are put in – just a swig and so you are paying through the nose just for juice. Cruise Loyalty Staff We attended the Cruise Loyalty and Future Cruise office once (the queues were ridiculous) but did not like the attitude of the lady who we spoke to. She could not get rid of us quick enough and there was not even anyone else waiting. We decided to use the Library to look at the cruises we spoke to her about and found them to be cheaper on P&O’s own website ! Staff The Entertainment staff were ok – never pushing you to do anything but there was a severe lack of things to do but maybe that is because of the general age of the Arcadia’s clientele ? Our Cabin Steward worked very hard – very long hours and always a smile. As to the restaurant and waiting staff – they simply are a credit to P&O. They are so polite and friendly and professional and remembered your drink and your name. Ports of Call It was a shame that on some port days most of the shops were shut ! We chose this cruise as it took in 7 ports of call of interest. This was our 5th cruise with P&O but the first time on Arcadia. Weather was fine and calm which helped, but everything from food to entertainment was the best we have experienced. In the past some dishes in the restaurant were a little soggy such as chips and battered fish therefore we had avoided them but not so on this ship. Executive chef was Trevor Glass, well done to him and his team. Entertainment we saw most included Jo and Liv, Blue Wave and the Headliners all of which were excellent. Ship was well maintained and clean, staff very friendly and attentive, although there was the odd Arcadia pipe leak with a bucket under catching the water until repaired but don’t let this put you off. Thoroughly enjoyed by my wife and myself together with our friends who were first time cruisers. Mark W Read Less

We have always wanted to sail on Arcadia so for our 35th wedding anniversary that is what we decided to do. We chose this particular cruise because it was a discovery cruise with new destinations we had not visited before and we were not disappointed. Embarkation went well, straight through and onboard in under 10 minutes ( probably because we were the last coach to arrive having been held up waiting for 2 passengers). Our aft facing cabin was very comfortable and was kept nice and clean by our cabin steward Ajay. Our only complaint about the cabin was the grubby glass on the balcony, it was in need of a good scrubbing not just a wipe over. We found the service in the MDR to be very slow and miserable, when asked for a table for two on our second visiit (and last) we were taken to a table for four, when this was queried the waiter turned and walked away leaving us standing there like lemons. When he returned he took us to another table for four but said we could have it for two?? Yes we were confused as well! The buffet was not much better. Food was ok depending on what you had but not always hot. Thank goodness for The Ocean Grill! Yes you had to pay a service charge but the food and the service was amazing. The entertainment was good, the Headliners were the best we have seen and the comedian Fogwell Flax was brilliant! Disembarkation is another story, it was an absolute shambles. They crammed too many people into the Meridian dining room, no numbers given out and we were held there for 1 1/2 hours - not good!! Would I sail with P&O again - yes Would I sail on Arcadia again - no, she is not the best ship on the fleet by far Read Less

Just returned from 14 nt med cruise 6th/20th Aug. I will give you my honest reviews as follows: Negatives: 1st nt. Dreadful penetrating creaking all over cabin(B29) Rang reception at 3 am. Night Manager came to see us, he dealt with the problem promptly. 10th nt. Very noisy vibration noise. Rang reception at 1 am. Night Manager arrived and immediately took us to sleep in another cabin. Noise gone when we returned in the morning. They said smoke from the threatre, they use, had got into the AC. We are on the 7th deck theatre on the 2nd!!! 12thnt. Creaking again but not as bad as first nt. Stuck with it till 7 am. Went to reception who sent the day manager up, they dealt with it once again. At 5pm he came to see us again and apologised for the 3 bad nights and gave us a substantial credit for our next cruise. Couldnt fault how they dealt with it even though we had 3 bad nts. Public toilets: For 14 nts at least 1 or 2 toilets were down through out the cruise. Deck 7(B) were down all day at one time. They stopped all paper towels and tissues in all toilets, stating they were the problem.People putting them sown the toilet. You had to use the useless dryers. Not good. Good points. We were freedom dining in the Meridian (3) Good service and friendly staff. -Ocean Grill £12 95 excellent meal. Entertainment: Headliners shows fab. Comedian, bril, Brit tones, bril. .Others ok. Risinig sun bar, Chris Shaw on sax brilliant.Pools: Plenty of sun loungers. Reception: Helpful. Although we had 3 bad nts we had a wonderful cruise. The Staff are friendly and very helpful. Our cabin steward Francis was always smiling and helpful.. We have been on most of the P&O ships but Arcadia isntt as good as the others. The entertainment just is not coordinated, in order for you to see most of the entertainment in each of the venues. All in all as I have stated we enjoyed ourselves(always do). First time in the Arcadia and it was absolutely first class. The entertainment in the Palladium was second to none and as good as any London West End Show. Evening dinner was very good although there could have been a better choice in the buffet. I can only imagine the negative reviewers were probably too fussy. This was the best cruise we have ever been on and just right for an adult cruise. There was no smut at all at any of the entertainements. The trips were well organised and daytime entertainement very good. I did feel that there could have been more shops and the goods in the shops were very expensive. Some of the grade of clothing could just as well have been bought at Primark. Clothing was unnecessarily expensive. It was very easy to get round the ship which is medium size. I would certainly go on the Arcadia again. Read Less

O clock and was lucky if we finished at nearly 9.pm which meant that the show at 8.30 we missed and had to wait till 10.30 for next one. If we did not go to show not much to do we are not drinkers so just walked about. Only 2 nights were la te. I am an older person but I won't go on another ship with most older people too many wheelchairs. I am sorry for saying that I know that but for the graceful of God I don't use one.i can't jive about but love to watch other people. Had a great rest bed by 9. 30 most nights. Cabin was lovely Steward looked after us. The ports visited were great and weather was kind to us. Cruise chosen as we wanted to explore a bit further into the Adriatic. As such we enjoyed going ashore taking some excursions which were good and also self exploring. The ship being larger than vessels we usually cruise on took some time to get to know the surroundings, still baffled with the self sevice Belvedere. One has to do at least one circuit to find out what's on offer, then the problem to find a seat. Don't leave your table mid-meal to get a drink or when you return you will find everything removed. Staff very pleasant and willing to help, including reception which I usually find is the weakest link on other ships. Allocated a table in the Meridian right at the stern and directly over the propeller shaft. The vibration made the table for us unusable, no other tables available so changed to Freedom Dining which is anything but. This means queuing at the restaurant entrance for at least 10 - 15 minutes to be given a pager to tell you when the table is ready:ni another 10 - 15 minutes. This inconvenience I feel could be sorted, why not give pagers at the bar?. Waiting staff very courteous, helpful, offering to change meals if they weren't as expected, as well as giving extra ice cream. Cabin pleasant, clean, good stewardess, helpful as was everybody else. Entertainment, apart from the hardworking Headliners, Jon Courtney was not up to the standard we have enjoyed on other cruises. The so called entertainments manager/director was conspicious by his absence and lack of any talent. I think this led to a flat feeling throughout the cruise. I think our next cruise, already looking, will be on a smaller, more intimate ship. Read Less

We chose this cruise to revisit Venice but arrangement for getting ashore was a nightmare. We are 86 and 84 and the majority of passengers were of a similar age. Shuttle buses were not provided so we were faced with a 1000m walk to a ferry and once ashore a similar distance to St. Marks Square over 4 bridges. You can imagine the queues at reception complaining, particularly as the ship moored next to us provided shuttle buses. Regarding the ship itself we found the entertainment left a lot to be desired with the exception of the Headliners theatre group and Jon Martin, But why did everything have to be so loud? singers in a constant battle with the band and conversation in piano bars nigh on impossible. We found the staff throughout the ship to be both friendly and efficient and our cabin steward in particular was outstanding. However some thought should be given to the dining arrangements. The Meridian restaurant is on two floors the upper floor designated for " freedom" dining where in theory you can eat at any time between 6 and 9 not so! you join a queue for an average of 10 to 15 minutes to receive a bleeper and a further wait while the poor harassed staff do there best to find a table. Why on earth both restaurants cannot be fixed dining and those that want to eat at anytime can use the Belvedere . We made some good friends and overall had a good time but feel we are more suited to the smaller ships such as the Fred Olsen Cruise Line provides. Read Less

We went on our first cruise with our daughter and their four children, we chose the Ventura thinking it was large so have plenty to do. We live in Southampton area so also a benefit. The embarkation went very smoothly although one lady attendant did tell my husband to keep moving when he stopped fo a breather when walking through the departure loung which we felt quite rude as he is a very poorly man. We had a four birth inside cabin and shared with our 16 and 17 year old grandsons which was fine apart from once the two ladders are in position for the top bunks you need to be a bit agile so that you can move under them to lower bunks, cabin was however fine. We found that the ship was too big for my husband as it was too much walking to get to the restaurants and theatres etc so we borrowed a wheel chair which was a big help however the lifts are very busy at meal times in the evening so you can wait with frustration as lifts come and go with no room for a wheelchair. The theatre was popular so you need to get there as soon as you have finished your meal, we were first sitting and found that we should leave the restaurant by 8 pm to get along to the theatre for the show. Sadly there was very little for our two grandsons to do so they were quite bored, Internet was too expensive so we didn't get that though it would have helped. It said on the itinerary football but when they went there adults were playing tennis in the area, I think this was due to there being only a handful of their age group on board. There were a few films on but for children only Jungle Book one afternoon and a Skywars film which they are not into. The two smaller children that our daughter had in their cabin had a wonderful holiday and really enjoyed the children's clubs every day however she was able to put them in at 2 pm for the afternoon but the adult film started at 1.30 so they couldn't even see that. The restaurant food was nice but repetitive on the Ventura though I'm told by avid cruisers that other ships had not been so repetitive. The free dinning food was all nice as well though finding a table for a large group can be tiring. Soft drinks for the children were expensive even if you buy a drinks card. All the staff on the ship were very attentive and couldn't do enough for you, cabins were kept clean and bedding changed if the smallest mark was seen on any of the bedding. Our daughter and the children have said they will never do another cruise however my husband and I are going to try one more on a smaller ship just to see how they compare. By the way they provide shuttle busses at every port but don't just jump on it and pay £4 each way as sometimes it's not far to walk. Read Less

Dinner first night was mediocre, had to share a table with a couple but next night they chose to sit by the entrance, perhaps because they were t-total. Next night food again was average apart from the asparagus which resembled more like floppy green beans delicately balanced over an egg. No way could you have done that with fresh asparagus. Following night had a potatoe on my plate that you wouldn't have fed to a pig. When asked if I enjoyed my meal, my reply drew the attention of the manager. Another problem was if you ordered your wine after the food, it wouldn't turn up until half way through your main course. We complained in the end. We were told to order our wine at lunchtime and were informed that P&O bring all their food onboard at Soton FROZEN, nothing fresh. I'm pretty sure I once upon time saw an ad with a chef buying in a local market? It's fantasy. The Food & Beverage manager wasn't interested, he said it was the same process on all their Cruises. The worst 17 nights on board I can recall. P & O have lost the plot. They are only concerned about getting people on board, not about how they look after them. It may be a few years since we travelled with them and I know that things can change but the only changes we noticed were negative. Toilets not flushing and emptying their contents onto the bathroom floor, stained towels and sheets, no pool towels, waiting for cutlery in buffet, whirlpools and lifts out of order for duration, cold food served, grubby bath and basin, soiled carpets in public areas, Cut back on costs with more sea days than normal and early departures, on board staff were unhelpful and almost rude in some cases, a few were however excellent, as they all used to be. Dining was OK in the Meridian despite dropping silver service, the Ocean grill and Sindu were good. Belverdere buffet was poor, not much selection and repetetive, cold and kept waiting for clean cutlery. Entertainment was acceptable although not as good as previously. No, I'm not just having a moan, generally it was awful. Really awful. #This is the life, pay for 5 star and get 2 star service. Always wanted to do a cruise never again, though we have been told we was very very unlucky, it was like an old peoples home age range between 75-100 no I'm not kidding, I like old people but wouldn't choose to be surrounded by 1000s on holiday, even the old people complained it was like a depressing old people home. The entertainment was poor cheap, and once again for the elderly, no wifi unless you wanted to pay £85 for 2 weeks, the pools are very small also I was looking forward to being on deck listening to the sea and reading a book, but oh no loud music all day once again for the elderly, we was on A deck and woken some morning at 6am with noise from the deck above while it was being cleaned. Food was good, and service excellent also cabin maid excellent. It's worth trying the independent restaurants for an extra £15 per person very good value. Read Less

Before sailing on the Arcadia we read lots of reviews, some I agree with some i don't. We have been on five cruises with p&o all on different ships and our experience so far has been exceptional. Well for what it's worth here is our review of the Arcadia. First embarkation the wait on the coach at the port seemed to go on forever, after about an hour or more we finally got off the coach. The booking in procedure at the desk was slow and disorganised, something we have not experienced with p&o before. We quickly found our room we thought on first inspection, not bad. We waited for our luggage for what seemed forever. After about 2 hours we rang reception they said your luggage should be there. I went into the corridor and found our luggage outside other cabins. Not a good start. In the restaurant we asked for a table for two and was put on a table two inches away from another table. The same thing happened on the second time so we complained, to be fair to the staff they sorted it out immediately. The food was very good but the menu was repetitive. Service again very good but slow. There was a very noticeable vibration and clanking of the engines when the ship was up to speed. We found the entertainment in the palladium very good but woeful else where, I don't mind someone playing the piano but please not in every bar. We found the decor of the ship dark and dingy. On every ship we have been on the atrium has always given us the wow factor, not on this one it's drab and lifeless. The wardrobes in the cabin are a joke not only is it a squeeze for your clothes it's to dark in the corridor there is not enough room to change. I think on the next refit they should get rid of the two seater and but extra storage there. The main sunbathing area was a big disappointment, no music no life nothing, apart from sailaways. I have seen more life in a library. On one day it was windy and we kept getting splashed with this brown stuff that smelled of rust. Some of the passengers complained but just got fobbed of I could go on but I know I'm in the minority because several passengers said this is their favourite ship. I'm sure p&o have a ship to suit every body, if you want a cruise where you just want to relax and watch the world go by this is the ship for you, but if you want want more entertainment and more excitement then don't go on this ship. If this is your first time with p&o and you did not like it please try another ship. Our favourite is the Ventura and we have already booked for next July in the Greek Islands. Having just come back from Arcadia, I cant make up my mind on where the problems and issues I experienced with the ship came from? Was it P&O's fault for promising an Adult only ship but presented what was nearly a "floating care home" or was it my fault for not reading or ignoring reviews and going there in the first place? Its presented as ADULT only, but what I did not expect was the actual reality of the "Adult Age" that attracts folks to Arcadia (average 75-80 year old, Captian confirmed this as one of his stats). Apart from the condition of the ship, the next thing you notice is the entertainment, its poor and lazy, all background piano playing lounge music (and not that great) wherever you go. Buffet is a nightmare, at lunch I joined the Belvediere on an empty line behind two elderly ladies who discussed and poked at every dish available before picking (and in one case putting back food at least twice) for at least 15 mins. And by this point there where 30 frustrated people in the Q behind us, but these two carried on regardless, jeeezz, and that took my tolerance to a whole new level! But that sadly that was not a one off, its what you experience everywhere and everyday on Arcadia. P&O should be reakky honest when advertising this ship and who it caters towards, its an Adult 70+ friendly ship as that is what they deliver to that market. Ship: Tired looking even after the partial refit, with a distinct lack of public area cleaning apart from at night (glass doors and chrome you would not want to touch, including lifts). Buffet: At a push, reasonable food for buffet, (but aimed at the English market in choice) but with the usual issues of finding a clear table not covered in someones bag, book or belongings as reserved. Main Restaurant (8:30 sitting) - Excellent, service and food of very good standard. Freedom Dining: Never did it, but heard complaint after complaint from passengers that did. Biggest complaint I heard was it was slow to take you in, then they rushed you back out again to free the table Entertainment: As I said above, poor in fact very poor by the standards I have seen on other P&O ships, including the Headliners team. And as far as the entertainments team are concerned, wow! The laziest I have ever seen on any ship, apart from silly dancing everyday 4 days or so around the pool, I seen them more sunbathing with the passengers than entertaining! Days at Sea: Nothing happens unless you want to play Bridge, other card games or go to a quiz. Apart for the odd thing happening on deck, in reality its all very quiet and I guess subdued to suit the elderly guests and the book readers,,,mmm Cabin: A rear balcony and for the first three nights we hardly slept due to the noise and vibration of the propellers as the ship was at full speed to reach port and the whole place was shaking, but to be honest we got used to it and it would not put me off rear cabins in the future Staff: Cabin and waiting staff I cannot praise highly enough. Very friendly and efficient Conclusion: I would not go back on Arcadia again and its more to do with the mindset of both the age group experienced and the entertainment P&O thinks it should provide for its majority age bracket on this ship. And to get that into perspective I am mid sixties and my wife is nearly seventy, so God help those even younger than us. Read Less

We are recently returned from another delightful cruise on Arcadia. She is our favourite ship and it feels like coming home as soon as we board her. I cruise with my mum who is 85 and is not very mobile, she uses a rollator. We find Arcadia very easy to get about on, although mum did say this timethat all the new carpets made it harder to push 'Roly'. The food was excellent, good choices every night in the Meridian. We had room service breakfast every day, it's easier and i can enjoy our sail ins on the balcony. We have a mini suite and we really make the most of the space. Lunch we usually had in the Belvedere and the choices were enough for us each day. Headliners were an excellent troupe, one of the best we have seen. We enjoyed Tom O’Conner and met him around the ship which was nice. As we cruised 3 times on Arcadia last year we were pleased to see Stuart Anderson on board again, he sings and plays piano and guitar, great to listen to. Service was as usual, excellent. Everyone is helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Read Less

We were aware of some of the negative feedback about Arcadia before we set sail; however, we decided to be open minded about everything. It's fair to say, there will always be parts of a cruise that could have gone better, but for us, the 17 day Eastern Med cruise went without a hitch. Arcadia was spotlessly clean, with attentive and helpful staff wherever we went on board. The passenger areas are vast on this ship, and we were never aware there were around 2000 people on board. There are an array of quiet lounges, coffee bars etc, together with an excellent choice of food served in the Meridian and Belvedere Restaurants. The evening shows in the Palladium Theatre were both varied and of a very high standard, with the Arcadia cast really giving their all at each performance. Our overall impression of Arcadia is that she is a lovely ship with great facilities, but lacks any 'wow' factor compared to other cruise ships which is shame. All ports of call were excellent and bar Gibraltar, we had enough time to see everything we wanted to. When we booked this cruise, the itinerary said that departure from Gibraltar was early afternoon, where in reality, we were told to be back on board for mid-day! I know P&O will say that it reserves the right to change the times, but we really did not have anywhere near enough time. The ship left late anyway owing to the numbers of passengers queuing to rejoin the ship. A few things we would mention. P&O need to be mindful of trying to extract every last pound out of their passengers. We seem to be besieged by the ship's photographers wherever we went, whether disembarking at the ports, at sail-a-way parties or at dinner. That's OK to a point, but it did become a little annoying at times! The photographs then appeared in the gallery at £11.80 each. A member of staff told me that around 60% are not sold and are destroyed. Perhaps if they were priced more sensibly, sales would increase and it might reduce wastage at the same time! We felt the biggest rip-off of all was a 'behind the scenes' tour, which was advertised in the Horizon paper. As this was something that really appealed to us, I rang reception only to be told the tour was priced at £75 per person! Come on P&O, can't you at least give something back to your loyal customers, rather than view them as cash-cows! We sailed with Celebrity a couple of years ago where such a tour was complimentary, and we didn't pay a dollar to be on the bridge for half an hour with the Captain! Shame on you! Read Less

As a fortieth wedding anniversary treat we booked cruise J503 on Arcadia. Denise, my wife is wheelchair bound and this was our first cruise without family so we were concerned whether we would cope. Embarkation was a breeze. Our daughter dropped us off, our suitcases were collected by a porter and we entered the departure area to book in. Within 20 minutes we were in our cabin. The cabin itself was ok but hardly fully adapted as described. Plenty of storage space but a lack of a full length wardrobe left Denise's dresses half folded. P&O make much of their fine dining experience but again it was slightly disappointing. Food was not always very hot and at times could only be described as bland. Choice of vegetables seemed to be anything you liked, as long as it was brocolli ! Conversation with other passengers, many of whom were Arcadia regulars, suggested that the standard of dining had diminished since the abolition of silver service. Plates now arrive fully plated and are unceremoniously plonked in front of you. However, waiter service and wine waiter service was excellent. Port and shore excursions were good. At Cadiz most boarded coaches for Seville but my days of manhandling Denise onto a coach have long gone so we spent an enjoyable day wandering around Cadiz. Messina is not a place I wish to return to in a hurry! I have never seen so much graffiti, it was scrawled everywhere. The whole place looked as if it could do with a good lick of paint. The harbour was full of floating rubbish. However, it has a magnificent cathedral. Pretty Corfu was the next stop. Unfortunately no shuttle buses were provided for the disabled so we were left with a lengthy walk to the old town. P&O please note, if you supply a service (ie shuttle bus) for able bodied passengers, by European Disability Law you MUST provide the same service for disabled passengers otherwise you are guilty of disability discrimination. Rant over. Must admit we quite enjoyed the 2 mile stroll into town. Next was beautiful Dubrovnik. We booked a wheelchair accessible tour here and were taken by adapted minibus way into the country to a farm that milled it's own flour, then onto Cavtat, then to Dubrovnik old town. Excellent tour with an excellent guide. Venice followed and again we booked an wheelchair accessible tour. Expensive but well worth the money. From the ship to Tronchetto Island to board a valparetto for the trip to St Marks Square. We had a personal guide all day as part of the tour package. Fabulous day. Split was an anti-climax as we knew that the ship was tendered here, so we spent a relaxing day on board recovering from Dubrovnik and Venice. Then followed a lengthy trip to Gibraltar for a flying visit ( 4 hours) and being Sunday most of the shops were closed. And finally to Southampton where disembarkation was just as smooth as embarkation. On board entertainment generally was excellent. The Headliners Theatre Group produced some excellent shows. Arcadia herself is showing signs of wear and tear. Buckets catching dripping water became a more frequent sight as the cruise went on. I think a decent refit is long overdue. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed it despite a few gripes. I may be a little generous giving it four stars. Read Less
