This cruise exceeded our expectations. Staff courteous and friendly yet we all had lots of fun and laughs with them. Food 5 Star and service 5 Star. From 5 course dinners to dancing to ABBA all on board enjoyed their cruise. Due to to the organisational skills of our Cruise Director Daniela there was no waiting times in our off board experiences and all enjoyed her daily updates and her fantastic sense of humour. Our ports of call were interesting and varied cruising passing through beautifully amazing scenery. We were a group of 8 who enjoyed the company of everyone on board. A special mention to our Captain Janos, Charles, George, Cristian, George , Ivan, Danang and Daniela who is just amazing and works tirelessly to ensure a great trip for all. The staff on the Amareina are the reason why this cruise a lifetime memory. And a big thank you to all. Read Less

We have only experienced ocean cruises previously so river cruising was all new to us. We decided to combine this with a cruise to places we had not seen previously as well and we were not disappointed (although there are vast differences between river and ocean cruising). The organisation was perfect - we were collected at the airport, driven to the ship and made welcome, even though we were early. We had the option of staying in the lounge until we could officially board or explore the city (map and brief explanation provided). At cruise end, we were transported back to the airport. The time taken to embark and disembark was minimal and well conducted, even to the stage of personally being introduced to our cabin attendant. River ships seem to be consistent in size, due to the width of the locks, the available height under bridges and the legislated length. All meals were served in the dining area with a speciality restaurant (Chef's table) and small snacks always as an alternative in the lounge. The quality of the meals was excellent although there is always one person who thinks the meals on some other ship were better (and this was on day 1) so I put this down to a case of someone trying to prove they have been on other ships/cruises. With the meals, there is always some consistency of items but the main courses change daily as do the soups and starters. There is also a consistent standard always available main course for both lunch and dinner. One could not go hungry as there was heaps to eat. River cruising does not offer the opportunity of stage shows nor does it allow for large groups of artists. Because of this, the nightly entertainment is usually one to four people performing for a single show - the quality improved as the cruise went on, the final performers being of very good quality. The resident pianist was average but certainly tried to include everyone. Service was personable and always of an excellent level - could not fault anyone of the staff. Met the captain in the wheelhouse and he explained the workings to us all - a very personable man who took the time to be pleasant whenever he met with anyone. Cruise director did a very good job as did most guides on the excursions. The shore excursions were mostly good, the concert at the palace in Vienna being exceptional. Laundry was prompt and efficient. My only criticism is that on occasions the excursion guides and the cruise director do not have English as a first language and, as a result, some of their presentations tend to be monotonous. Some of the guides also tried to provide too much information. Read Less

Highs - Excursions - The daily excursions were great. Well organised with great guides. - Royal Collection - Three highlight tours - Namedy Castle, Majestic Imperator Train to Salzburg and a night of classical music in Vienna. All superb. - Service - The service of the staff in the dining rooms, reception and our rooms were wonderful. All very friendly and helpful. Just ok - The food was plentiful but certainly not to the standard we expected. Selection of beers and wines was surprisingly limited. There were only two beers and they ran out of the one I liked early in the cruise. Despite stopping at a port each day and being told each night they would get the beer tomorrow, it took nearly a week before they got additional stock. Lows - Service - bar staff - it became obvious it was the last cruise of the year and they were tired. At times you felt you were a bother to them. - Entertainment - It was a real mixed bag but average overall - Dining - It looks like their are two different restaurants but in reality they are the same and offer the same food. We were a couple and as you couldn't reserve a table found it difficult at times finding a seat with out upsetting people. There were many larger groups who wanted to sit in the same seats every day, breakfast lunch and dinner. You certainly got the message if you sat in someones seat. - Public Areas - too small for a full cruise. People had to sit on arms of chairs at times. I have little doubt the majority of people on the cruise loved it. I think it depends on age and expectations. We felt that whilst enjoyable there were too many let downs to call it Luxury also considering the price. And please APT don't have you cruise directors tell all and sundry that tips are looked after by APT and if we felt we got good service to could tip. We paid for the staffs tips in our price. It certainly created and expectation to further tip the staff. I'm happy to tip good service but only once. Read Less

the cruise was good ,the staff were great ,the meals and drinks were all good, the entertainment was average, and our room which was a royal suite was NOT what we expected, our shower was ridiculously small and the room size was only marginally bigger than the other rooms on level 3. seeing that this vessel is only 2 years old with many complaints about there shower in the royal suites yet they have done nothing about it ,l have complained, but its like talking to deaf ears we would not recommend the royal suite to anyone total waste of money in my opinion ,its very disappointing that they don't take there complaints seriously, celebrating 90 years in touring l would have thought that they would listen and take action when they have the same complaint over and over again, would l travel with APT again after there response over our complaint and the time they took to get back to us probably not, they need to try harder to keep there passengers. APT "small ship" cruise, initially going from Venice to Istanbul - owing to the political situation in Turkey the cruise finished in Athens rather than Istanbul. The ship was the Island Sky with a passenger capacity of only 114 plus some 70 crew. The ship's officers were a multi-national collection with most of the crew coming from The Philippines. First class crew and service. Nothing was too much trouble. Most spoke very good English and the whole operation ran like like clockwork. Safety drills were well organised with clear guidance. The ship's hygiene was also first class. Our cabin was on the 4th deck, nicely furnished with a large window. Relatively small bathroom but perfectly adequate for one at a time. Large very comfortable bed. Spotlessly clean. Dining was also first class. Wide choice of excellently prepared food. All inclusive meals/drinks - you could eat and drink virtually all day if you wanted! Entertainment was perhaps somewhat limited. Excellent pianist played every evening. A "disco" evening and a "film" evening. Don't expect all the bells & whistles entertainment you find larger ships. The stops included Zadar, Sibenik, Split, Hvar, Korcula & Dubrovnik (all Croatia), Ortranto (Italy), Kotor (Montenegro), Itea, Mykonos, Lesbos & Delos (all Greece) and Kudadasi & Gallipoli (Turkey). The itinerary was changed shortly before the cruise started owing to the political unrest in Istanbul. The APT Tour Director and her team and all the crew coped extremely well with the changes. Excursions well organised and interesting. Only the trip to Delphi could have been improved - it really needed more time. Overall a 5 star trip. Yes, APT prices are towards the top end but the old adage you get what you pay for springs to mind. Read Less

Buyer beware!!!! This was certainly a holiday of a lifetime and we call it the "Great Aussie Rip Off". Please make sure you read the fine, fine print carefully. Budapest to Amsterdam Friday 18 March for 15 days. We believed we had researched this holiday thoroughly before booking with APT. We asked the correct questions. We finally booked with APT because we liked the fact it was an Australian owned company. We believed the testamonials from the APT owners and we liked what we saw on heir DVD's, brochures and information books. We now know that ALL APT brochures, information and DVD's are false, implied, misleading and deceptive. Firstly, we saw your APT ad for $5,995 per person twin share (fly free and free upgrade). Flight Centre, Hastings went on to charge us $9,840.50 per person. (Our free room upgrade alone was an extra us $800). Majority of people on the cruise got 2 for 1 offer and paid between $5,000 and $6,000 per person because they booked last minute or through the cruise expo. This information was the opposite of what Flight Centre, Hastings told us. When pulling up in Budapest to the APT Cruise ship it was definitely NOT the Cruise ship that we were shown in the brochures or DVD's and it had just had a paint job to cover up all the imperfections. There were no balcony suites. There was no pool on the top deck (as we were shown when booking). We were advised that every room had their own mini-bar that was re-stocked every day. There was no mini-bar nor bar fridge (for that matter) and we had warm bottles of water left in the room on the side boards. We could not take photos of most Palaces we visited. Beware when travelling over the Easter Period (as most town, shops) you go to are closed - what a waste of money that was. We expected to see an equestrian show at the horse riding school - instead we were shown empty arena and horses that we could not take pictures of. APT brochures again are implied and misleading. Oh - one of our favourites.... Rudesheim - Gondola Ride. If you get a chairlift on the way up the hill and the same thing brings you back - it is called a chairlift! Not a Gondola (regardless of the correct name call it what it is). Once again, implied and deceptive. The on-board alcoholic drinks were watered down in the second week. The Baileys Irish Cream was Milk! The beer was flat and the wine was cheap and tasteless. Your 24 hour gym could not be used between 6.30pm and 9.30pm (any day) because Fine Dining Restaurant took over the room. There was only 2 restaurants on board. The not 3 as stated as the restaurant upstairs had almost the same menu as downstairs (just scaled down). False and misleading. The hotel manager and the cruise ship director on-board spoke to people as if they were lesser than the staff and most of the time and always smiled through gritted teeth. These women should never hold the position they hold. Overall - what a disgrace our APT River cruise was leaving us with bitter memories. This trip was only worth the 2 for 1 person deal $10,000 would have been a trip well spent. $21,200 was certainly NOT worth my savings! We contacted APT upon our return to advise of the above and they have brushed us off and denied, denied, denied. Mind you, they were NOT on board to deny? Read Less

We have just completed an APT 8 day enchanting Rhine cruise and it was very ordinary from and activity and tour perspective, the ship, crew, food and cabins were all excellent however the cruising and on shore activities were badly organised and managed. Don't believe all of the marketing materials on these cruises as you only have about 2 days of good cruising and the rest is industrial and farm land in a very busy shipping channels, also the age group of most people is 60 plus. The on shore guided tours are poor as you are cattle in and onslaught of every ship arriving at the same time and there are many of them and lots of poor guides. If you have mobility issues I would say don't do it as it can be very tough and no one will look after you if you haven't got some good travellers with you. Our trip of a life time was destroyed by this cruise and I would hate it to happen to anyone else so please research carefully before investing. Read Less

My boyfriend and I eagerly anticipated this Danube River Cruise, Vilshofen to Budapest on the Amaprima. We did a lot of homework for it with our travel agent and on our own. We spent 2 days in Prague on our own, with a private guide, which was terrific. do not regret our choice of our private guide, and would have used one more frequently in place of a few of the guides on the Ama trip, as I didn't some of them were at the professional level they should have been. The Passau walking tour guide was very mediocre, we would have enjoyed Passau more without a guide at all, given the guide's poor skills. Unfortunately, one can't know that until you start the tour-we actually gave up on it, midway through. We have been on many other trips, including cruises, and have never just walked away. The Linz Walking Tour was OK, nothing spectacular. The shorter Salzburg tour was good- we enjoyed it. Salzburg is a great city! The Melk Abbey visit was excellent-though we were surprised at how difficult it was when we wanted to take the little shuttle back to the ship rather than walk- there were not enough seats and there was a lot of griping by other cruisers. There should have been better accommodations for the short ride, maybe a few taxis on hand. The day in Vienna was simply not enough for this great city. The itinerary was poorly panned. I'd prefer giving up the Durstein tours (the Apricots and Sweets Tour was totally misrepresented and a waste of time)- and staying in Vienna for an extra day. The Vienna Hidden Walking Tour was fun but the guide was so unexciting, I thought she was going to fall asleep! We planned our own afternoon and it was one of the best of the whole trip. I would recommend hiring a private guide for the day in Vienna-would be worth it. The Vienna concert was fabulous! And the night tour around the city was great on the way back. A lovely evening. The Danube has some lovely areas, and there were some beautiful views. Bratislava was pleasant (again, I would have preferred an extra day in Vienna and skip this city), and Budapest was terrific. The tour there though, was underwhelming. We spent half of the tour in a square with the guide just talking at us. Half the tour was a waste. Again, I would have hired a private guide for Budapest. The evening riverboat illuminated tour around Budapest was fabulous! The food-my boyfriend and I were not impressed with the food, at all. We did not think it was up to the reputation that AMA has for the food, or the wine. I found myself not wanting to even eat the bread after the third day of the same bread. The bread was exactly the same for the entire cruise! The best thing on the cruise was the ice cream. The specialty restaurant is very good-the food there was a notch above the restaurant. The staff- excellent, really great staff. The cruise director was truly amazing!! She was terrific, helpful, friendly, fun, knowledgeable. The rooms are kept very clean, the housekeeping staff are great. The restaurant manager and servers are terrific. They really work hard to keep everyone happy. The pool is really small-just manage the expectation there- no separate jacuzzi. The pool is too small to swim in, you can maybe cool off in it. The ship's layout is pleasant, common areas are pleasant. Well-appointed. The pianist onboard is nice, local entertainment pleasant. The gym is very small-not even any free weights. I should note that we did not feel up to biking-we had planned to take some of the bike excursions and that may affect our opinion on the tours- the biking is a great part of the river cruise experience. But I have to rate the cruise on what I did experience. Embarkation and disembarkation were easy and pleasant-no issues. We took our own taxi to the airport in Budapest. One cruiser's luggage was left at the ship when she took the bus-that surely isn't worth the few dollars saving. Read Less
