Wanted to take our first Viking cruise and our travel companions were going to be visiting family in Europe. This was an itinerary that we all liked and were able to coordinate the dates of travel with each other. Embarkation was as easy as get out of the taxi and walk on the ship. We were greeted by cruise director and our luggage was taken. We went to our cabin after a bite to eat. Then the fabulous adventure began. We had a French Balcony room which allowed us to open the sliding door without the balcony for seating. We opted to save money on the cabin and not get a regular balcony. You really are not in your cabin very much. Having been on several ocean cruises I did not miss the hustle and bustle of thousands of travelers. The numerous buffets, big shows and casinos were replaced by relaxing evenings in the lounge listening to music or a cultural presentation of the areas we visited. One suggestion more movies on your movie channels. On a 15 day cruise, sometimes you may want to just retreat to your cabin for a couple of hours. The shore excursions were extremely informative. All of our guides seemed so knowledgable and were passionate with their explanations. Sailing along the river was like traveling through a history book...castles and hamlets just popping up as we rode by. The dining was ok. Not as elaborate and not as many choices as larger ships but meals were generally tasty. Dinner dress was nice casual. Some were a little dressier on the nights described as dressy or not. We thought we would have had more food choices relevant to the countries we visited. Although there was a coffee/tea and cookies station in the afternoon I would suggest more variety in the snack area. Most of the travelers were seniors and there were no children. I would not recommend the cruise for families with smaller children. There are no "kid friendly' activities, no pool. no arcade, no movie theater! Would we do it again? We have already booked our next Viking Cruise for 2017!!! Read Less

The Grand European River Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest was wonderful. We booked everything through Viking so we were met by a Viking representative at every transfer point and they stayed with us until the transfer was complete. The itinerary and departure information booklet was very helpful. The write-ups on what we would see and do at each port and excursion helped us to plan our free time and choose extra excursions. We followed the tip of packing some of our clothes in each other bags. The booklet had all our travel information in one place. The ship was beautiful . All the crew members gave us excellent service . The food was presented nicely and every thing was delicious. The menu had many choices for each meal. Each night, a special course was offered featuring food from the region we were visiting . They gave us a special dessert to share to celebrate our 50th anniversary. Our program director kept our shore excursions well coordinated with local tour guides, provided small group entertainment on the ship, gave interesting informational talks on what we were seeing and arranged demonstrations of glass blowing and baking. Evening activities included music, interacting with crew in small groups and watching tv in your cabin. Safety is Vikings main concern. We transferred to another ship due to low water. The transfer was very easy. We were able to follow our itinerary of shore excursions by motor coach and meals were provided in local restaurants. In Budapest, Viking changed the train transfer to Prague to a motor coach due to a political situation. At the hotel in Prague, a van was provided to transport us down town for our convenience. Local friends told us about it. Viking’s reputation was a big part of this, as were the TV ads that made it seem attractive. It was all that we expected and more. We had a great time. The guides were well-prepared, the food and entertainment was terrific, and the new friends we met were very interesting and great companions. The staff did a wonderful job of organizing and directing us, and we felt comfortable and safe throughout the journey. The best thing about the Grand European Tour was the quality of the accommodations, the condition of the ship, and the way we were treated. The weather was variable, but we had a wonderful time every day, and we would love to do it again. The only unexpected event was the requirement that we change ships midway through the tour, but even that was accommodated without anxiety and the crew made it absolutely easy for us to do that. The new ship we moved to was identical except we lost some of our favorite wait staff when that happened. The cities where we docked were all accommodating, and the streets and places we went were safe and fascinating. It was a GREAT vacation trip. Read Less

Arrival day in Amsterdam included a walking tour and much rain, but great taste of the city. The ship was beautiful and well appointed. The crew were always friendly and accommodating. Room was very small, but quite adequate with a wonderful "patio like" window that opened and allowed for enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells along the way. More food than one could possibly eat. Having local guides at all shore excursions was great and allowed for interesting conversations. Due to low water conditions, we had to "trade" ships half way, but other than having to pack our bags, the trade was almost seamless. Viking representatives were at the airport when we arrived, at the hotel during our 2-day extension in Budapest, and at the airport when we left. Our program director, Lubo, was fantastic! Viking took great care of everything! The hotel in Budapest was well located and very comfortable. It was a wonderful trip, especially for a first time to Europe. It would have been nice to have had more "free" time in some of the cities, but I understand the time constraints with such an itinerary. I would say that perhaps this isn't a trip for younger people as, at least on my trip, the clientele's average age appeared to be around 70, and a bit more sedentary than I had anticipated. Entertainment on the ship seemed to be geared towards an older audience as well. Still, a wonderful opportunity to see and visit many cities of Europe. Read Less

Beginning this European adventure with a pre-trip to Amsterdam was a great idea. The Viking staff provided an informative walking tour on the first full day in the city. The guide made suggestions of places that we might like to visit, sites that we might like to see, and food that we might enjoy experiencing. Our hotel, The Renaissance, was within close walking distance to many of the suggestions. The Viking staff representatives were also available at the hotel to assist with directions to take a bus to the museum district or to board a train to a nearby town. This was a relaxing 2 1/2 days that allowed us to acclimate to the time change before we boarded the Viking Vili to sail on the Rhine, the Main, and the Danube Rivers on our way to Budapest, Hungary. Have you ever traveled with a staff that always had a smile? Many of the guests on the ship commented about the ship's staff. They either love their jobs, or they put on a very good act! They were always smiling and very willing to talk to the guests and offer any help that was needed. Learning about each port from a qualified English-speaking guide was important and it was well done. Each guide provided unique information about the city we were visiting. Sailing on the rivers was a beautiful experience both day and night. Being able to open the sliding door and take in the sounds, the smells, and the views was so memorable. I enjoyed the movie options late in the evenings that were available in my comfortable cabin. The open seating in the dining room was very nice although after you met some nice people you found yourself often returning to the same grouping of guests. Viking just seemed to think of everything for their guests! Despite some changes that we had to make, they worked hard and happily to provide a wonderful experience for their guests. Viking does a great job of running the vessel and accommodating the needs and interests of is passengers. Pre- and post-cruise hotel stays are booked in very nice upscale properties. Throughout the city stays, cruise, and shore excursions, Viking is there to help. Not surprisingly, even a company such as Viking cannot ensure that things off the ship will run smoothly. Some shore excursions - due to the time of year and popularity - were at destinations that were so crowded that they were not enjoyable. And although Viking did an excellent job of meeting us upon arrival in Amsterdam and taking us to the hotel, airport assistance failed miserably at Budapest. The agent was not there to meet us, and chaotic conditions in the check-in area made the experience miserable. Admittedly, this is not under Viking's control, but the absence of an agent left us without guidance on how to best proceed. We had a balcony cabin which was nice. But in several ports Viking moored two or three vessels alongside each other at the pier, so our view was often into a cabin on an adjacent vessel. These cruises are focused on the scenery and the shore experience. Do not expect much in terms of onboard entertainment or activities. If you want peace and quiet, this is the place to be, with the quiet enhanced by the absence of children. Read Less

My husband and I chose Viking for our first European river cruise after having done about 10 Ocean Cruises on various lines (Princess, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity & Oceania). We heard wonderful things and had high expectations. Overall it was a wonderful trip but we felt that there were some things travelers should know about. Viking is spoken of very highly here in the U.S. where we live. We booked a category AA Veranda Suite so that we would have a sitting area separate from the bedroom. We were not assigned a cabin upfront and while travelling to Amsterdam received a call from our travel agent that we were upgraded to one of the Explorer suites. We were elated. When we arrived, there was NO ONE around the ship at our small docking area. We actually held the taxi in case the driver made a mistake! We boarded the ship and found the Grand reception area. Again, there was NO ONE around. Finally, a crew member came out from behind a door, asked our names and confirmed our cabin and said welcome aboard. That was it! There were no security checks like on large ocean cruises. We were then escorted to our cabin. Our Explorer suite was lovely with a separate living room with two floor to ceiling sliding doors leading to a wrap around balcony that enhanced our cruise experience. HOWEVER...we did have two issues with this suite. We want future travelers to know that river ships travel primarily at night and the Explorer suites are at the back of the ship DIRECTLY ABOVE the engines. The vibration was something you can get used to but they appear to have two settings, full throttle and idle. Our second issue was that our mattress was horrible. It was very firm yet incredibly lumpy and uncomfortable! We told our steward and she exchanged our "topper" for another lumpy one. We started our cruise on a different ship (the Viking Mimir) due to low water levels and switched to our ship (the Vili) in Nuremberg. We had the same issues on the Vili. We felt the food on board could have been better. Breakfast was always excellent with a wonderful buffet suitable for Americans and Europeans with a cook to order egg station. We always had lunch at the Aquavit terrace to enjoy AL Fresco dining. The choices were more limited but there was always a salad, some side dishes and a meat option and of course, desserts. Dinner in the dining room was nice but the service a little slow. The dining menu is heavy towards regional cuisine and spending so much time in Germany and having local dishes during our shore excursions, I chose to opt for something off the "regular menu" side which always consisted of a steak, chicken and salmon choice. The salmon was very fishy, the steak was of poor quality and tough and the chicken bland. For staple menu items, they were disappointing. My husband did like the regional cuisine. As wine drinkers, one thing that allured us to Viking is that they include it during lunch and dinner. We felt the quality of the included wine was quite poor. The varietals would change each day and we always tried this to see if it would be acceptable. On occasion, we drank the free option but because we also had the silver spirits beverage package, we often chose something different. However, it always took a long time for the servers to get a different choice and they did not have any California Chardonnays or Cabernet's on board. This is somewhat understandable since we were in Europe but as highly popular wines in the US and the cruise line catering to Americans, we were disappointed. We also asked for Sambuca after dinner in the bar and they did not have it on board. We felt the options were very limited. All the passengers would meet in the lounge before dinner for our "next day Port update". Service in this area was adequate but we often times had to flag down a server or get up and go to the bar to get a drink. The Included shore excursions were always wonderful. The wireless hearing devices are great. They allow you to hear your guide without having to stay right next to them to hear what they say. Many were walking tours in the cities which would end with a little free time to explore on your own. For the tours that required bus transportation, the quality and cleanliness of these were exceptional. We enjoyed all our excursions and found that this is one area that Viking excelled in. One thing to note for any new river cruise travelers is that there is an extensive lock system on these European rivers. We traveled through about 60 locks during our two week journey. During the first half, from Amsterdam to Nuremberg, there were Five days where the upper deck was COMPLETELY closed in order to allow the ship to pass below many bridges. This meant that the walking track was unavailable. The river ships are very small and there was little to do during these five days while on board other than sit in the lounge and admire the views (which is, of course, why you do the river cruises but I wanted to mention this for anyone expecting activities/entertainment). We feel fortunate to have been given the Explorer suite and enjoyed the extra space. The visits to all of the European ports were wonderful. It was an amazing trip. Despite the low quality food and beverage choices, the bad mattress and lack luster service we enjoyed the cruise very much. However, if we have the option to do it again, we will try a different cruise line. Read Less

Cruise director Gary was very nice, but a bit sarcastic at times, which I was fine with, but my have put off others. He was an asset, in any event. Nightly entertainment was in need of improvement. Those brought in for special nights were good, but the "lounge players" could have been better. We were on the Villi and then changed to the Meli, because of low water. Both lounges singers were marginal at best, although the male counterparts who played piano and other instruments were better. The female singers need to go back for vocal training. Many tour guides were very variable in quality. Some good, some marginal, several poor, but I can not be specific because did not keep a record. Few were excellent. I was very annoyed Viking would not let us use the onboard promotional for dollars off future cruises toward previous booked cruises. (buy 100 get 100 free up to $800) We have a Barcelona to Copenhagen cruise that we booked several months prior to the river cruise sailing, but were not permitted to use that incentive toward the actual cost of the next cruise, because we had already booked. I would suggest they amend that so your patrons who booked within the past 6 months can still have that advantage. I understand it is offered as an incentive for new bookings, but to get your cabin of choice, bookings need to be at least 18 months in advance and therefore I do not feel we should be "penalized" due to advanced planning. I will likely take at least one more river cruise, although I think they need to expand Cruise destination options. I keep getting emails about taking cruises with the same ports I have already been which shows no attention to detail recording individual passenger. I would definitely continue the wine and beer offerings at lunch and dinner, as that is part of what sets Viking apart from their competition, amongst other things. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and was chosen to visit countries and cities we had not visited before. The Vili longboat was excellent but beware of booking suites with balconies or French windows! There are over 60 Viking longboats cruising and often when they berth they tie up alongside an identical boat. This means that when you open the curtains in your cabin in the morning you are looking into an identical cabin window about a metre away! Our cabin on the lower deck was excellent Also be aware that there are over 60 locks on the Rhine/Main/Danube between Amserdam and Budapest and also many low bridges - this means that the sundeck is closed for 5 days in the middle of the cruise! Since the boat is 135m long and 11.45m wide and the locks are only 12m wide expect some bumping and noise during the night when passing through locks! The included tours in general were very good, well organized with mainly good guides. One other point of contention was the question of gratuities. Although gratuities are optional, if you follow the guidance given by Viking you should expect to spend about £400 on tips! I believe that gratuities should be included in the cost of the cruise and not used to boost the salaries of the staff!! The included tours were very good, well organized, with comfortable buses, good guides and good communication devices. Ships mooring berths were in general very convenient. Finally, we felt that 15 days visiting cities and small towns, most of which had cobble streets a castle/palace, a cathedral, old painted buildings and made the best sausages in the world was a bit too much - 10 days would be enough! Although this was not our first river cruise it was the first time we went with a Viking river cruise. Overall we would highly recommend Viking based the the quality of the entire experience and the great price. We the chose this Grande European trip because of all the countries we could see, the beautiful cities and the opportunity to meet some wonderful people. We were not disappointed. Firstly booking our trip directly through Viking went very well with a most helpful Viking representative. Viking did an outstanding job of providing a precruise package for our family. We did a pre cruise stay in Amsterdam and post cruise stay in Prague which we would highly recommend if you have that opportunity. We were met by a very friendly and most helpful Viking representative when we arrived at the Amsterdam airport. The transfer to our hotel went very well. The Viking hotel host was most helpful answering any inquiries. The transfer from our hotel to the ship and embarkation was well organized. The ship crew and our host Sam were exceptional throughout the entire trip. Our cabin was very good and the cleaning staff were friendly and did an outstanding job. Meals throughout the day and evening were very good. We had an opportunity to meet with the captain and visit the bridge which was very informative. The shore excursions were excellent and well organized. The excursion hosts were terrific; very knowledgeable and friendly. Leaving the ship was difficult because of the excellent job done by Viking and the many new friends met. The post cruise trip to Prague went very well and the stay there was wonderful. We would definitely go on another Viking river cruise based on experiences with them. Read Less

The Hotels were great and all of this was arranged by Viking and it was done well. We were on a new boat and everything was in perfect shape. The food was excellent and the waiters were outstanding. We had Lubo as the Excursion director on our boat and he is an asset to the company, very knowledgeable and a wonderful person. The only drawback of the trip for us was we found the 14 day too long. The entertainment was going out each day on the tours which after the first week we found it a bit of overload, one week would have been perfect. Would we do it again, absolutely but only one week. Lets start by saying that Viking River Cruises are not cheap. The 14 day Rhine and Danube cruise rounds out at about $1000/day per couple. For that price, you get a well organized cruise. Small but efficient accomodation. Limited space on the ship and bridge inaccessible for aboit half the cruise. Shore excursions involve a lot of walking. The Danube is low on water, so you have to change ship at the middle of the trip. Main complaint is the food. Breakfast and lunch are OK but dinner is not up to par, at least not for the price. If you are not into food, then you are OK, but if you are a gourmet, forget this cruise line. Wine and beer are abundant, but run of the mill stuff. Ordinary table wine. Again, NOT WORTH THE PRICE! We always wanted to do a European river cruise. After reviewing 5 different companies we choose Viking mainly due to price. We did the Amsterdam to Budapest cruise. Remember your paying almost $600 per couple per night for these cruises. The rooms were very nice - no complaints. The food was good but the portion sizes were random. One night your fish order would be a substantial 3" x 6" fillet and the next night it would be 2" x 4". Service on the Vili was excellent. However, because of low water due to drought we switched ships in the Danube canal and did the second half of our trip on the Viking Mimir. The service on this ship was not nearly as good as the Vili. It was noticeably a less attentive - it took longer to get waited on and served, water and wine were not refilled unless you made a request. I was also disappointed in the excursions. While they were nice they were not nearly as exclusive as the marketing people lead you to believe. To me they were on par with what you would get on a bus land tour. We had friends do the same cruise on another line and their excursions seemed to be much more intimate and exclusive. One thing they don't put in the marketing brochures is that for 5 days of this trip, they close the top deck due to bridge height so you are restricted to the inside of the ship or the bow. This is a real bummer and came as a big surprise. For the money paid I would look at alternatives cruise lines or alternative itineraries. Read Less

Started in Amsterdam pre boarding and enjoyed the city on our own. We had heard so much positive information about Viking and this tour that we anticipated a wonderful experience. The biggest disappointment was the dining room and the food. Service for all guests at same time (7:00) took over two hours. The room was so incredibly noisy I found myself yelling to be heard. I would think that anyone with hearing issues or aids would find this room to be uncomfortable and impossible to carry a conversation. The staff mentioned that the portions were small because people had complained about too much food being served. Well, there is a difference between small portions and tiny. I realize you can request more food, but after tasting the offerings I was not interested in more of the same. Finally started asking for vegetables. If any were served on the entrée, a few carrots, half a stick of asparagus. Extra veggies consisted of a bowl of carrots, no seasoning with maybe a few peas. I gave up and ate bread and ice cream, which was quite good. The fruit plates I though would be a savior. Not to be. No variety. One fruit per plate, a bunch of grapes, an apple, a pear sliced. I reviewed your recipes on line and wonder what ship those dinners are served on, certainly not on the Vili. Toward the end of the trip we started using the outside sundeck area where a limited selection of food was available and usually cold. The majority of food was over-cooked, inedible and frankly terrible. Read Less

Was very excited to do this river cruise. The staff were very friendly and helpful. When I booked it, assured family member's life threatening food allergy was not a problem and she would be safe. When boarded, the cruise manager, the house manager, the chef and the wait staff all assured us they were aware of the serious allergy and the issues of cross contamination, especially since their kitchen is small and the chef wipes his hands on his apron between dishes. Half way through the cruise, they prepared a meal with the allergen. She was offered an appetizer which she was assured was safe but she did not know was prepared at the same time as the other dish. Within minutes she went into anaphylaxis, had to use 2 EPI pens and the boat pulled over to meet an ambulance. She was treated in a local ER and then returned to the boat. The rest of the trip was ruined. She missed many events and just did not feel good. She ate food she brought with her from that point on. The whole issue could easily have been avoided as they did not have to have include that dish on the menu. They offer both included and "optional" tours during the journey. The optional are guided tours at a price. A couple of the guides were excellent and really informative. The rest were marginal. Many of the tours were places we could have done on our own at a 1/10 of the cost. There was a pressure to tip the guides, the bus drivers and big,big pressure to tip the staff at the end of the trip. Made to change boats the last 3 days due to "maintenance" needs, new staff seemed unhappy and never stopped cleaning the public areas, so we were constantly having to navigate around the vacuums and brooms. Both boats had strange little bed pillows we all made constant jokes about. On the 2nd boat, when first checked in, had to have the bed linens changed 2X due to hair on the sheets and the bath floor mopped as so dirty. The best part of the trip was meeting some delightful other passengers. Loved being on the river, seeing the castles and next time will explore renting a private barge instead. Read Less

Booked this cruise because the promotion advertising looked like it was what we wanted and the sailing date suited. Reserved a two room veranda suite on deck 3, these cabins are directly under the walking/ running track on the top deck which results in overhead noise even though it is supposed to be a walking track that is restricted 8pm to 8am. The other disappointment was that the large window ( 2m x 2m) double glazed window was shattered this we were told happened on the previous cruise and they had been in touch with maintenance to make repairs further down the river, an apology and a bottle wine was given but the window was never repaired. The cabin steward was excellent as was the concierge who booked special city tours for us. The food was a big disappointment, at times it was over cooked, bland and vegetables were only served if you ordered the steak which was in my opinion the best selection on the menu. The waiters in the dining room were not skilled in their service, I would suggest they go and wait tables on a Princess Cruise to see how it down correctly. Dinners were not reminded to use the hand on entering the dinning room. The smorgasbord served in " Aquavit " lounge had a better selection at lunchtime than the dinning room, I would liked to have seen "sneeze covers" on the food, that might explain why a large number of passengers appeared and sound like they had a cold. Would I cruise with Viking again? Definitely not. Read Less

We recently booked a Grand European river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. This was a last-minute booking. We booked our cruise only a few weeks before the cruise sailing date. The sales agent sold us this trip as listed in the brochure. It wasn’t until right before the trip that we found out about the problems with the river levels and that we would be transferring ships and spending hours on busses. We even called the sales agent that sold us the trip and ask about the river levels and were told not to worry, just a little rain and the river levels would be ok. I do not blame Viking for the weather and if we would have been booked out for some time, I would have just thought our bad luck. But after we got to Amsterdam, we found out that the river conditions and boat transfers had been taking place before the date we booked our cruise. I believe Viking should have been straight forward and advised us of this river condition before we booked. The thing that drew us to this cruise was that we would not be packing, and unpacking and we would not be spending hours on buses. Also, two of the cities we were most interested in seeing were Vienna and Budapest, time spent at both cities was severely curtailed due to boat movement, remote docking locations and long bus rides. All total we had to transfer boats 3 times. Again, I am not blaming Viking on the weather or the river levels, but they knew of these conditions at the time we booked our cruise, and nothing was said. We would have not booked this trip if we knew of the river conditions, but maybe that’s why Viking was not honest with us. I will say that most of the Viking crew were very pleasant and helpful and did a great job. We enjoyed them very much although our Crews Director stretched the truth about how much time we would be on a bus, the bus ride was always longer then he said. One final comment, we filled out our commit sheets on the boat and voiced our disappointment and I also sent an e-mail to Viking and got no response from either. Oh well, Viking got their money and we got a disappointing vacation that was supposed to be our dream vacation. I do not think I could ever recommend Viking to anyone. Read Less

Viking ran an incredible deal $2499 for 14-day Grand European River Cruise. I dreamed of this trip for YEARS but didn't have anyone to be my roommate. This Memorial Weekend special 2016 was so cheap that I called Viking and spoke to agent and told her I wanted to pay an additional $2499 for the ghost person for single occupancy and was willing to pay $5000 to have solo cabin. She snapped "NO! This promotion is for double occupancy only! For you to have a cabin yourself you have to pay $9000!" I am a travel beginner, I didn't know any better but to believe her. So, I ran an ad in Travel MeetUps for a NON-snoring roommate. Too much detail to type here, but I got railroaded by another Viking agent to room with a lady I never heard of, who saw my MeetUp post, and called Viking to call me with her on the line. She lied to me about snoring and after we paid, she admitted she had sleep apnea but didn't qualify for the C-PAP machine. She SNORED LIKE A HARLEY! On top of that, she was soooo critical, condescending, and judgmental of little details of my rooming with her too numerous to list, like where I hung my towel. She insisted on turning AC to 68 which gave me a bad cold and asthma for the rest of my trip and 2 weeks after (I extended it), even tho I told her many times, she snuck it up, and told me room service did it. But Room service said they NEVER touch passenger's AC settings. She screamed at me just because I asked her how her tour was, because I "interrupted her movie and she was writing an email at the same time", when I was just trying to be nice and acknowledging her when I came in. IT GOT SO I WAS AFRAID TO GO TO MY CABIN!!! On the 10th day, Harley snored so loud that I told the concierge that I was thinking about bailing ship and forfeiting the rest of the cruise even tho the best excursions I already paid for, were yet to come, but I didn't know how to get from where the ship was, to Budapest where I had extended stay reservations. Everyone said the ship was full, but Hotel Manager offered me my own cabin for an additional 100 Euros a night (400 Euros). I wish I had done that sooner, as 100 euros/night extra was still cheaper than $5000 I was willing to pay, but Viking agent didn't let me. My anger against Viking telling me I had to pay $9000 to have my own cabin MADE ME CHEATED, increased exponentially, when later, ALL travel agents told me you never pay more than double. One even posed as consumer and while I was holding, she called a Viking agent, said she wanted to go on same cruise solo, and agent entered "1 person", and computer came back with same price as the double occupancy price, and it was NOT $9000. I felt even MORE CHEATED and DUPED when on the ship, I met a 92 year old man who had a cabin a few doors down the hall from mine (same price level) to himself for which he said he paid $5000. "How did you do that?", I asked, "Viking told me I had to pay $9000". He said "I don't know, my travel agent handled it for me". So here was what Travel agents told me, that you never pay more than double, was true. When I got home, I filed a complaint with Viking about being told I had to pay $9000. Viking backed what the first Viking booking agent told me, and refused to acknowledge fault or look into the 92 year old man. Viking offered me only $500 “Good Will” credit for a future booking within 12 months. I did not accept it because I felt Viking was tossing me “crumbs”, and then I would be obligated to using Viking, AGAIN. People later told me I should have hung up and called again to get another agent, but I was very inexperienced at traveling, and that first agent was SOOO ADAMANT and forceful in her voice "NO, FOR YOU TO HAVE A CABIN TO YOURSELF, YOU HAVE TO PAY $9000!", I did not question further. Though Viking did not pick my roommate for me, I ended up with “cruel and condescending Harley” ONLY because that first booking agent was so adamant that I had to pay $9000 for solo. Agent would not allow me to pay 2 x $2499 for solo cabin even tho I tried to convince her Viking would be saving money, cos they do not have to pay for ghost’s food, and excursions, but they still got the full fare. My overall trip “1 star – Awful” is due to the horrible roommate I was forced to travel with, because of what she told me about having to pay $9000 instead of $5000 to have a solo room. I feel "cheated" . As for the cruise itself, I am a Foodie and the food was pretty good. They served some of my favorite dishes, such as osso bucco and did a great job with that. The steaks were pretty good, but all at my tables agreed, the cook overcooked the fish. We had chilean sea bass and swordfish, two of my faves, but they were overcooked. Overcooked fish is the reason for 4 stars vs 5 stars. I ate TWO different main dishes, most times. Most of the tour guides for the included tours were 4+, except one had strong B.O., that I felt I had to hold my breath all the time, following him, even outdoors. The highlight of the entire cruise, was something that was at whim, and not a planned event. The Concierge had done this before, so she was offering to do it for our cruise. She organized a bike rental outfit to provide decent bikes for about $22, and we biked 31 kilometers from one town to another, along the River, to meet the ship. We rode through very small towns and many grape orchards, and even cemetaries. Took us about 4 hours. I felt that the Program Director was somewhat overly effusive (kinda fake). He was only age 26. But I give 5 stars to the Concierge and the Hotel Manager, because they found a way to give me my own cabin the last 4 nights, even tho I had to pay 400 euros for the 4 remaining nights. I felt the two most beautiful things I saw on my Viking Grand European Tour was oddly, the ship itself (1 year old) AND one of the buses we took to Regansburg. The grace of the longship floating through the water like a swan, and the design of the roof and windows on that white bus (the modern "lines") with the Viking ship on the side of the bus, were soooo beautiful to me. My ratings above 1 star are when I did not have to be with Harley. I have very bad feelings when I think about Viking saying I have to pay $4000 ABOVE the cost of paying for 2 people. My memories of my trip feel sad, rather than good memories. Read Less
