Food was superb. Crew was very congenial, helpful, and accommodating.Ports of call were as good as they could have been. Local tour guides were passionate about their work/leadership. On board educational services were excellent. Crew personnel went out of their way to be hospitable and friendly. Tour director, Marek, was so wonderful we wanted to take him home with us!! The issues with low water were handled superbly. I didn't;t see them as an inconvenience and I feel that Viking was more than fair in refunding 50% of the cruise cost towards a future cruise. More businesses should be so generous!!! We also felt that two weeks was a good length for a vacation. It often takes at least a week just to unwind and get into 'vacation mode.' WOUld have opted for more time in Amsterdam after discovering how much there was to see and do. Have to go back. Read Less

We chose the 14 Night cruise for its length, first of all. And also for the countries it would traverse. We opted for additional time at both ends of the cruise: Amsterdam and Prague, and were very glad we did. We'd never been in either city - or any of the others along the way, for that matter. Each experience was wonderful. The local guides were extremely informative and delightful. We decided that our 50th Anniversary cruise ought to be a blow-out, so we booked a suite. Again, we chose well and were delighted with all the amenities that were included. The service was outstanding, from all departments. We enjoyed getting to know some of the crew, learning where they were from and who they are. Meals were delicious. We were particularly pleased that the menus were divided into more traditional American fare AND local foods. I ordered only local foods so I could explore new tastes and was never once disappointed! There were more entertainment opportunities and activities than we could participate in. For active folks, there was never a dull moment - and for those who prefer a more relaxed pace, it was easy just to opt out. We loved the live music provided by Tina and John, a very talented couple. Gary, our activities director, was a wealth of information, very funny and very efficient. He did his best to see that everyone was well cared for. I have finally discovered that there can be such a thing as too many shore excursions. This was new for me... perhaps a function of age? Naaaaah, couldn't be true! I found the excursions to be well organized, enjoyable and very informative. Couldn't have asked for anything more. Even the problem of the draught-induced low water levels were handled impeccably. We were able to trade with an identical ship. We started out on Mimir and traded to Vili, which had been unable to get to Amsterdam for the start of our cruise. The shift was easy and efficiently handled. Couldn't have been done any better. Would have preferred not to have to trade ships, but there was simply no other option, given the water levels! The down-side of this was that we had become fond of our crew and had to leave them halfway through the cruise. The other crew was excellent too. We didn't enjoy have to raft with up to two other ships. We frequently had no view from our stateroom and didn't feel comfortable using our balcony. My husband was disappointed that our ship only once tied up within walking distance of a town - Passau. He loved being able to leave the ship whenever he chose and not have to take a bus on a schedule. More of that would have been greatly appreciated. Read Less

It was our 25th wedding anniversary present to each other. We decided on a river cruise and always wanted to do a Viking River Cruise. With all the was included and nothing for us to do but show up at the airport, Viking was top notch all the way. We NEVER worried about anything as they took care of everything for us. From the second we arrive, we felt like family from the beginning. Every day seemed to be better than the last until we finally had to say good-bye. The final evening in Budapest was one of the best spectacle we had ever seen with the city lit up along the river. Every tour and guide were top notch and the buses were clean and owned by viking themselves. The cabin was perfect and the Villi/Mimir was hands down the best ship we saw along the river. If we ever get the chance again, we will be doing another Viking River Cruise! Worth every cent! Read Less

We chose Viking for our first cruise, and now we are spoiled. It was a celebration of our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Our Cruise Director, Gary, was most enjoyable. Entertainment on board was enjoyable especially the glass blowing demonstration. The apple strudel demonstration was a gastronomic sensation. The river was impassable at one point which caused all of us to be moved from the Viking Mimir which picked us up in Amsterdam and took us to the impasse. We disembarked and went on a scheduled day excursion and the bus returned us to the Viking Vili with our luggage. We continued on the Vili all the way to Budapest. The extensions at both ends of our river cruise were top notch accommodations. Please Note: I spent over 27 years in the US Army, and my last seven serving as a Sergeant Major. I have been trained to look for and spot items out of place or needing attention. I could not - repeat could not - find one thing to criticize, improve, or correct on our Viking Grand European River Cruise. Our ship swap was an example of military precision. Read Less

We wanted to experience the Danube and ports by water. The river and ports were beyond belief...charming, historic, packed with great restaurants, shops and very interesting churches, and cathedrals to visit. The crew on board made us feel very special. Everyone did an outstanding job. We especially appreciate all of the tour guides in each port. They are well educated and know everything about their respective area of expertise. Our room was well appointed. We especially like having a separate bedroom and bathroom and balcony. The group meetings were great and the information that was dispersed was very useful. It helped to prepare us for the next days excursion. All of the meals were very tasty. There were plenty of choices to accommodate any palate. The service was timely. We would definitely recommend Viking Cruises to our friends and family. We are looking forward to our Viking Ocean Cruise on the Aegean Sea in the future! Read Less

Numerous friends and family highly recommended Viking to us. We were not disappointed. Starting with our experience with the consultants who assisted in booking the cruise through our experience after the cruise, we consistently had a wonderful experience. The level of customer service is outstanding in all aspects - booking, departure, aboard ship, excursions, and departure to return home. We found this to carry over to the 2 days we spent in Amsterdam prior to the cruise. The attention to detail and personal preference is unmatched. We very much valued the support and guidance received from Viking staff both at the hotel in Amsterdam and during the time onboard ship. They readily offered suggestions and alternative excursion suggestions based on our preferences and mobility limitations. No detail was too small or trivial. We met some really wonderful people and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get to know folks which is facilitated by the limited number of travelers. The quality of food, variety of entrees and service by the servers made mealtime truly enjoyable. if a passenger requested a special entrée, for example, that was not on that meal's menu, most often that request was granted. Many of the servers made an effort to learn our name and would address us as such whenever we saw them. We really enjoyed the chef's nightly briefing prior to dinner to advise what was on the night's menu and how it complimented the particular location of the ship on that day. We also really enjoyed the opportunity to tour the kitchen and hear the chef's presentation how so many wonderful meals were prepared in such a small space by only a handful of staff. Overall this was one of the best vacations we've ever experienced. We are already planning our next cruise with Viking. Read Less

The program director was so entertaining as well as being knowledgeable. He had everything very well organized. He had a great sense of humor. It was always good to see the captains as well. The wheelhouse tour was a special treat. The stops—ports of call— were many and gave a variety of experiences. The guides were quite knowledgeable about the cultural aspects, as well as entertaining—every single one we had. On the two week cruise, we met most of our fellow passengers—quite a congenial group for the most part. We met two couples whose company we particularly enjoyed. The one thing I would change would be to figure out how to increase the “free time” at the ports. We did have a little anxiety about missing the boat once or twice! Overall a wonderful experience. From the moment we approached the Vili, the customer service was fantastic. It started as we were personally greeted by the cruise director as we got out of the taxi and didn't stop until we had been escorted to the airport and checked our bags at 4:00 in the morning in Prague for our return home. Food was great and plentiful. Every staff member, from the smiling housekeeper who greeted us everytime we saw her to the wait staff who was very attentive and learned our names and preferences very quickly, made us feel special. The cruise director was amazing both as an entertainer and organizing everything. The hotel director was surprisingly talented as a singer as well. Not only was the staff great, but we made great friends with other guests on board. The shore excursions provided a great overview of the cities and villages along the way. I only wished we had more time on our own in each place. Our favorite excursion was probably Terazin, the Jewish Ghetto. It was both educational and heartbreaking. Definitely will cruise again with Viking. Read Less

We selected this cruise because it seemed a great way to end our first trip to Europe. After touring on out own for almost three weeks through Spain, we hopped on the Vili and enjoyed being pampered, educated, and transported in luxury. The facilities and staff were excellent, and the included tours started every day with an overview of the area. The food was wonderful, and the included beer and wine with meals made a beverage package unnecessary. The ONLY complaint we have is the strange way that Viking handles tipping. They claim to pay their people a good wage, yet towards the end of the cruise passengers are given a list of suggested tips. This document even suggests not tipping individuals because then those behind the scene would not get any tips. Well... if they pay a fair wage, operate in a region where tipping is rare, why would people need or expect tips? In Germany, Austria, and The Netherlands where the cruise occurs, people in service oriented jobs do not expect tips. (I have even asked in small pubs and restaurants to confirm and the employees tell me they earn a good living and tips are not part of the equation. On top of this Viking asks for $5/day/person for the cruise director, a position that is essentially management level! Our cruise director did a great job, and should be appropriately paid by Viking instead of working for tips. Again, other than the tipping glitch we had a wonderful cruise and would recommend it highly. Read Less

We chose this cruise partly because Viking sponsors Public Television in our area. We enjoyed watching the beautiful scenery depicted on the commercials. Someone in my family had also been on this cruise and had a great review of it. The cruise was wonderful. The cruise experience, itself, was enjoyable. We had never been through locks on a ship. The places we visited were great and the crew was spectacular. The food was top shelf and the waiters went out of their way to please you. We tried to get the same waiter each night because he knew our names after the first day and took great care of us. My wife and I were celebrating our fiftieth wedding anniversary on this cruise, that is why we choose this time of the year to make our trip. We met some interesting people and made some new friends. Our cabin was well taken care of and was perfect for us. We enjoyed the outside veranda. The rest of the crew went out of their way to assist us with any difficulties and made the cruise even better. We've cruised with Viking in the past, and they definitely don't disappoint. They deliver exactly what we want in a vacation. Their staff is professional and capable while remaining warm and accessible. By day two the bar staff had already memorized my favorite cocktail, the maître d knew where we liked to eat for dinner, and the wait staff brought me a special serving of the vegetables I love. We made sure to go on every shore excursion and booked multiple extra tours, because we're always so impressed with the quality of the guides. So many of the excursions give you access you wouldn't have without Viking. They also regularly have "visitors" on the ship that share about local culture in an intimate setting. We added time in Amsterdam with prior to our cruise, and we were very glad we did. Pick up at the airport was a delight, as was check in. There was always a Viking rep at the hotel when we needed one. We are many years younger than the average age of Vikings passengers, but that's never an issue. Its great to take a vacation where there are no children on board. We can do as much or as little as we want. Each time we cruise with Viking, we make new friends. We never miss having regular cruise ship offerings such as a casino, additional dining venues. We absolutely love that we don't ever have to dress for dinner. Viking isn't necessarily "fancy", but its always a quality experience. We are already planning our next Viking Cruise. We can't wait to see China with them. We highly recommend Viking. Read Less

You hardly know you are moving. The layout of the ships makes everything easy to access and the crew couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating. Our room was perfect in every way. Every port we stopped at was unique and fascinating. There is so much beauty in these charming river towns and cities, and between cities were charming and bucolic scenes along the way with the history of the region ever present. We would recommend Amsterdam extension at the beginning of the trip and the visit to Prague at the conclusion of the river journey. Both towns are fascinating and well worth spending some extra time in these locations. We had such a wonderful time, and this will be the first of many river cruises with Viking! Read Less

I had looked longingly at the Viking commercials on television, never dreaming this would be possible for us. I finally decided to investigate and just happened to reach the website at a time when 1/2 price cruises were being offered. I am of German heritage, and my father was in Germany after WWII, and this looked like a perfect trip. Amazingly, my husband agreed that this was a good idea! Our trip exceeded all expectations. Our trip down the Rhine and the Danube was a trip of a lifetime. The accommodations were first class Even though we had a standard stateroom, with no balcony, wee didn't miss a thing. Everything was comfortable and perfect. Our cabin attendant saw to our every need. The Viking Villi Program Director Stein was an amazingly energetic and polished individual who provided expert preparation for our excursions prior to our stop in every port. His recommendations for places to go and things to try and see were always on point. We saw sights that we had only ever seen in books or on film, and could hardly believe that we were experiencing these wonderful places and people in person. Max the Chef presented a wide variety of fabulous regional cuisine Everything included locally fresh produce and ingredients that were loaded at each port. There were numerous choices to satisfy every palate. I can't say enough about the superlative quality of every aspect of our trip. All members of the crew were ready and willing to do anything required to meet our every need. Of all the magical aspects of the trip, I'd have to say that the exemplary service of every crew member was the single characteristic that puts Viking at the top of the list of cruise lines. And just so you know how every much we enjoyed our Viking experience, you probably need to know that we couldn't wait to book another one! We're going to Italy in May 2018!. Read Less

My wife and I decided to take a snap shot of central Europe, starting two days early in Amsterdam and finishing four days late with prague after Budapest. Our desire was to not have to do any of the work /reservations, which Viking did nicely for us. The crew knew our names after the first day, the food was scrumptious, and the walking tours were informative and made sure you walked off the meals. We enjoyed the evening entertainment, cocktails, snacks and social time with newly discovered friends. The format for adding excursions was easy to do before the cruise, and adjusting on board was super simple. Stein had a couple of historical lectures, which we enjoyed greatly. By day two, Herald our bartender knew what drinks to get my party, and the wait staff were perfect, doting on us like we were special. Melena was an absolute jewel for housekeeping, prompting my wife to comment that she had never had a bathroom cleaned multiple times a day. We all felt special . WE just returned home from our first river cruise: 2 weeks Grand European Cruise with Viking was outstanding. We loved every minute. Relaxing, yet lots of history to see and learn about. I cannot say enough about the crew: they were the best we have ever cruised with (previously 5 ocean cruises). 186 people are taken care of by 50 crew. That does not count the numbers of Viking employees or associates on land that made our land excursions so seamless and interesting. They definitely have the logistics down pat!! The cruise director was terrific and I would go anywhere with him again. The food was not fabulous, and I only gained 1 pound, but we chose to do as much walking as we could which was the only exercise we could get. Longships are limited in size by the lock systems on the European rivers, and by the shallow rivers we traveled on. Hence the lack of an exercise room. Since we booked air through Viking, we had greeters at our arrival airport, at the hotel of our pre-extension in Amsterdam, at the Budapest airport. WE felt special that Viking was able to make our vacation worry free. Read Less

We wanted to do a European river cruise for years, and after asking around, decided to go with Viking River Cruises. We've taken to ocean cruises on Carnival (Mexico Pacific coast and Alaska to Vancouver BC, and this was our first river cruise. We vastly prefer the Viking experience. The smaller ship doesn't skimp at all in amenities, at least the kind we look for. As their ads say, no swimming pools or drinks with umbrellas. We had local guides for every stop, and the individual audio devices ensure you can hear the narrative just fine without the guide shouting. We enjoyed a mix of included and optional tours, augmented by some supplementary helps graciously suggested by our Concierge. For example, by wife had some temporary difficulty walking distances, so our Concierge suggested a "rickshaw" tour of Salzburg, which my wife wouldn't have been able to handle otherwise. The extra cost was very reasonable and well worth it. We were "five star" pleased with the accommodations, the outstanding food, the warm and gracious service and the many things included in the price. We opted for the veranda room (not the French veranda) and found it to be an excellent balance between price and comfort. At the end of the river portion, we took the optional three days in Prague. This was another example of Viking's excellent service. Most tour companies would have put us on a chartered bus, said goodbye at the ship, and then had someone at the hotel in Prague to greet us. With Viking, we had a Viking guide with us on the whole trip to Prague, plus a dedicated driver for their transfers between Budapest and Prague. This really helped out with the rest stops and especially during the lunch stop, since the menu was all in Czech and the English of the staff was not the best. Arriving in Prague, we were competently turned over to a full time resident staff in the hotel that gave us the same attentive service as on the ship. We're already looking forward to our next trip with Viking, which will be a Christmas markets tour next year. Read Less

Embarkation went smoothly once we figured out exactly where to find the ship. The ship was beautiful and our stateroom was fantastic and had all the amenities we could possibly want. Food and drink were excellent and plentiful and was a great way to meet people. On board entertainment was great and included a number of games, a glass blowing demonstration, an opera concert, and several very interesting lectures. The shore excursions were extremely well organized and were very informative and lots of fun (I would highly recommend the beer tasting extra excursion in Koln). The electronic "Quiet Vox" devices that were used during the excursions enabled the guides to communicate through the earphones without the guide having to shout to be heard by all. The entire crew was outstanding and often went above and beyond to help in any way they could. I would definitely cruise with Viking again! Read Less

I looked at a number of river cruise lines and decided Viking was the best for what I needed. I'd taken a Viking Rhine Getaway two years ago and loved it so much, I was eager to experience another river cruise. I wanted one that was longer so chose the 15 day Grand European on the Viking Vili. I also did the pre-cruise extension in Amsterdam. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The ship was clean and the room, although small, was comfortable with plenty of storage. Ship staff were always quick to help. The guides in each port either lived in that city permanently or, in some cases, temporarily (students), but they were all topnotch. And the tours in each port were included in the price. In some cities, optional tours were offered at an additional cost. I did only a few optional tours, but they were well worth the cost. We saw Cologne, Vienna, and Budapest, and a number of small cities that were every bit as interesting as the large ones. I was in a cabin on the lowest deck (the lowest cost) and by myself since my traveling companion became ill at the last minute. I would think two people would be tripping over each other at times, though, because the cabin was quite small. When we weren't in port, I spent a lot of my leisure time either on the top deck, in the lounge, or on the Aquavit Terrace. The ship also had a small library with comfortable chairs and two internet stations you could use at no charge. The wifi was free. I enjoyed sitting on the sun deck and viewing the vineyards, castles, and other interesting sites while sipping a refreshing beverage. When the sun deck had to be closed because of low bridges, the Aquavit Terrace was available. We could also dine on the Aquavit Terrace and did for a few lunches, but we always ate dinner in the restaurant since one of the great things about river cruising is the interesting people you meet and become friendly with. River cruise ships don't have entertainment like ocean cruisers, but there were several evenings we were entertained with small musical groups and there were trivia games. During the day there were some interesting lectures and one day the best and most entertaining glass blower I've ever seen. There were also several tea times and at least one cooking demonstration. A quick mention of the pre-cruise experience in Amsterdam which was also great. We stayed in a centrally-located hotel within easy walking distance of almost everything I wanted to see (I did take public transportation, very easy to use, to the Rijksmuseum). A tour of Amsterdam was included with the pre-cruise cost. I could go on and on. I enjoyed everything about the trip. Read Less

Love the small ship and many of the staff knew our name after the first few days. After the first day, when we went to pick up our shore pass cards, from the front desk, (we can't remember her name) would always greet us with, "Hello Mr & Mrs Wxxxxx from stateroom 209". That is a great way to start each day. We were not just a number with someone asking for our number. This was on our 40th Anniversary and Viking treated well with several people signing to us at Dinner, and flowers and towel swans in our stateroom. The Head Chef came and visited with us that night and later in the cruise also. We have cruised on 9 cruises and 4 different cruise lines before this cruise and find Viking the BEST. Viking treated us so good. Bottle of water each time we go ashore, welcome back snack or such. We also loved the one free tour each day where as we did not have to pay for every tour. We did purchase a few of the optional tours, and were glad they did not conflict with the free tour for time. The Tour Guides were all great. The food was delicious with lots of choices. We enjoyed meeting the whole staff to include visiting the kitchen. The wait staff was excellent, always smiling and ready to serve. The staterooms were always kept clean. I would definitely recommend a Viking cruise and at some point would consider doing another. Read Less

This was an absolutely excellent river cruise. Embarkation was excellent since we were met at the airport and driven to the hotel. The hotel stay was also excellent in a four star establishment. The ship, dining hall, lounge, hallways, and cabins were always very clean. Everything in the cabins was well supplied. The staff were always friendly and very helpful. The food was excellently prepared and the staff were excellent in taking the menu requests and delivering the menu items requested. They were constantly waiting on us in refilling wine, water, tea, and other beverages. The program director and other chief staff were very knowledgeable and all daily activities were well planned. Day tours of the cities were well planned and the tour guides were very knowledgeable and very accommodating. While the ship cruised at night to the next destination, the travel was so smooth it was sometimes difficult to know we were actually moving. This river cruise was very enjoyable, the scenery was breathtaking, and the knowledge gained of the country sides traveled was inspiring. Disembarkation was also excellent since we were driven from the ship to the airport. We would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting to know more about life in the countries along the Rhine and Danube. Read Less
