We've enjoyed Viking River cruises very much and wanted to travel to countries in the north where we've never been. This ocean cruise looked promising as it would take us to Denmark and Norway with only one day ay sea during the advertised week long sailing. This appealed to us as we are more interested in visiting new places than the amenities of a cruise ship. We also chose the optional add-on to Iceland offered by Viking. First of all, the ship, the onboard staff, the food, spa, etc. are outstanding. My husband and I travel light - one carry-on size roller bag each- so the free, self-service laundry aboard ship was a real advantage. The shore excursions however, were very disappointing. We opted for the 'included' excursions except for 'optional excursions' at two of the ports. First the 'included'; generally two-two and a half hours in length consisting of a very brisk trot through the town with no stops for photos or even time for questions for the guide who in one case explained she only had two hours to complete her tour. Needless to say, if you're interested in learning about local customs, culture or history, you won't get it on the optional tours. Viking does provide a selection of 'optional' tours at each port and depending on how much more you want to spend over and above the price of the cruise, airfare and insurance, these are available but not inexpensive by any means. We took two - one to the Kon Tiki Museum and the all-day railway excursion in Flam which was outstanding. The add-on trip to Iceland includes two full days of touring which were excellent. Fortunately, breakfast each day was included, otherwise meals are on your own. Be prepared for staggeringly high prices - a hamburger at a fast-food place was $25! Finally, logistics of trip arrival and departure, delays at airports for pickup, onboard check-in, were chaotic at best. With so many options for travel around, we will be looking elsewhere for our next trip. Read Less
