We started on Skadie, we loved everything about it. Especially the hospitality captain. The Dinner host went so far above & beyond it would be difficult to describe. Her services were so outstanding, they all worked so well together. The room service was discrete & accommodating. Everyone was so friendly and seemed happy in their jobs. Moral is #1 in any business. We changed ships 1/2 way due to low H2O in the river. They made it so effortless for us, we did not miss a thing on the schedule. The Bragie was welcoming, same rooms ready for us. Our ships hospitality guide changed ships with us. The service, food, accommodations again flawless. The schedule of excursions were so well timed, not to much, & plenty of time for self exploration & Viking assistance to get to & from the ship. They made the trip so easy, & completely stress free. The timing of the passing thru the many locks was impressive, causing no disruption in sight seeing, dining or sleeping. There was less time to lounge up top than expected, but the times we couldn’t be up top some type of activity was planned. Our only regret was loosing the day in Budapest to travel to our extended excursion in Prague. We did both pre & post extensions and both were 1st rate, The only issue is when we arrived in the am tired from the flight we could not check into our rooms, they held our bags & offered suggestions of what to do for 6 hours... but we were tired & sleepy. We later learned the most outstanding pool area had lounge chairs we may have taken a nap on. The Okura in Amsterdam has a speculator pool, spa, sauna hot tub area with separate gym & lounge. This may be the overall best trip we have taken. Thankful the water levels were high enough. Read Less

The entire staff on the cruise always went above and beyond to make sure everyone had everything they needed. One night we came onboard after the dinner was over (after 9:30) and the staff even prepared a special dinner for the two of us. The entertainment on board was great and very educational. I loved the fact that each stop had an included excursion. The guides were every knowledgeable and they could answer any question that was asked. The head director of the staff had a great sense of humor and made us feel at home. The food was good and the cleaning staff kept on top of the room. The Waite staff in the restaurant was very attentive and the food options were delicious. We loved the complimentary wine and beer. We took part in some excursions were added to our great experience seeing the Netherlands. Look forward to going on a second Viking cruise. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we loved it! Embarkation and disembarkation were quick and easy. Viking makes sure all the passengers are well taken care of. The staff was courteous and attentive. The ship was immaculate. The food was great. Excursions were well organized and interesting. We had a group of twelve and had a blast! We enjoyed the nightly entertainment and even won a couple of the games. We spent the day prior to embarkation in Amsterdam which is a beautiful city. We toured the Anne Frank House which we bought tickets for months in advance. Bruges was our favorite excursion although we really enjoyed them all. We will never do a huge cruise ship after the personal service we enjoyed with Viking. The staff knew us by name and quickly learned the things we liked. Highly recommend Viking! We look forward to our next cruise with Viking! Read Less

Wanted to see Amsterdam and the tulips in March. Was amazing. Great ship director and staff. The staff went above and beyond to make sure every need was meet. They even cooked a couples meal for us when we came back from our own sight seeing in Amsterdam at 10pm. The on board educational talks were very inspirational. The cruise was relaxing and we were treated like dignitaries. The meals were delicious and there is not one thing I could ever get a craving for because there was always a great selection. I also like the free drinks at meal time. The included excursions were wonderful. I could go sightseeing on my own after the excursion if there was something else i wanted to see on my own or to to shopping without supervision. I didn’t have trouble with the local language since everyone knew English as their second language. Can’t wait to take another Viking river cruise. Read Less

We wanted to see the Tulips and Windmills - now and then. The rooms were too small. We had to take turns getting ready in the morning as well as other occasions. There also was not enough room to put our suitcases under the bed. One went in the closet and the other was in the room close to the bathroom. All other aspects of the cruise were great. I have recommended Viking cruises to many friends. We stayed the extra 3 days at the end of the cruise. Transportation was arranged to transport us to our hotel. We are traveling with Viking in 2020 to Waterways of the Tsars. All dining was great. There was always a great selection of food for lunch and dinner. If you wanted something that wasn't on the menu staff was always accommodating. The ports and shore excursions were always great and appropriate for the region Read Less

We knew people who had gone on the same trip. We were considering a Viking river trip and this one was what we wanted. We were able to see the Ann Frank house in Amsterdam, which is something we had really wanted to do. We were glad to have that extra time at the beginning of our trip to explore Amsterdam a bit before embarking on our cruise. The ship, Saadi, was great. Our cabin, while not big, was comfortable and clean, and the maid who took care of our room did an excellent job every day! The food on board was wonderful— never any reason to be hungry! It seemed that all the waiters/waitresses would do anything to accommodate us. We were pleased that there was evening entertainment provided and we especially enjoyed the trivia contests! And the ports and shore excursions were all well planned. Our tour director, Stein, was great— he was very organized and kept everything, including all of us, on time. We enjoyed all of the ports and shore excursions, especially Salzburg (Sound of Music) and Vienna. We hadn’t read the optional tour description carefully enough and were surprised when we had a Viennese waltz lesson included in our tour! Even with the low water levels, having to change ships, and not having a full day in Budapest, we really enjoyed everything about the trip. We definitely would go on another Viking river trip. Ours was one of many river cruises affected by low water levels on more than one river, but we'd live in Germany during a drought year back in the 70s so weren't concerned. Leaving Amsterdam a day later than originally scheduled gave us another day on our own (Heavy rain would have made tulips + windmills most unpleasant.) and we had one well-organized and well-predicted ship-swap. The logistics of the ship swap were impressive: moving two boat-loads of guests by luxury coaches, moving luggage by truck, cleaning, rescheduling meals & shore excursions. Local guides (required by law) extremely knowledgeable -- don't be afraid to book your day full. Because we had a 2nd primary Viking staffer, tours eventually split into two groups to accommodate those less mobile (bus access to central town areas limited by ordinances & cobblestones = cobblestones) -- to everyone's benefit. Notes in no particular order: 1. Vienna moorage within walking distance of the Prater park & the giant ferris wheel -- the Wiener Riesenrad -- from The Third Man movie. 2. Cologne: Schokoladen museum 3. Passau: St. Stephan's organ concert but wish we would have had time to purchase a CD from the gift shop -- get into the church as early as possible for best seating 4. Wachau valley winery tour -- source of many Viking's wines 5. Historical Bavarian village -- added mid-trip 6. Bratislava by night -- extra evening attraction Crew very willing to answer technical questions -- we're boaters ourselves -- staff diplomatically dealt w/passenger not interesting in enjoying the cruise other than ruining everyone else's day. Things not explained: 1. If you're not in a dining room by "door closure," you don't get dinner. 2. Purser's office doesn't like to change paper money into coins for tips; they suggest using ATMs which don't give coinage. Serious problem: wasps (yellow jackets) everywhere on shore & on the boat, esp any place where food/drink (They love beer!) served. We suggested wasp traps after I'd gotten stung on a shore excursion; didn't dare a second sting since the boat doesn't carry an Epi-pen (My doctor said I shouldn't need one if stings infrequent.) Post-cruise comments directly to Viking, including compliments, met with cliches. We'd booked directly through Viking, not a 3rd party, and eventually learned that other depts (air travel!) would make up answers rather than admit lack of knowledge. Viking's low-water advance-alert email offered a 50% credit vs future cruise, so we'll be on an ocean cruise this fall while considering additional Viking cruises -- including maybe this one from the other direction. A big problem is low water levels which isn't in Vikings control, but the choices they made didn't make for the best vacation. Late buses, locked bus bathrooms, ugly docking area, and no show shuttle to name a few. Add to that an assistant that lack awareness of senior pacing which is important since that is your cruisers, turn around and look lady, I shouldn't have to chase after her because others are lagging behind and becoming distressed. And, unless you leave someone in charge of the group, don't run off with part of the group and leave the rest behind even if shortly you intended to return. Add to that our cabin bathroom flooding twice, yuck. And, the more that went wrong, the more disgruntled folks became, lots of not happy folks. Because of cruise critics I expected some of low water issues and I was glad it wasn't as bad as it is now with problems on both ends and in the middle, but most folks on the cruise were surprised by the changes we had to make. On a positive note, the scenery is amazing, towns are picture pretty, like a storybook. Both our cabin stewards were great. Marik the entertainment director was fantastic and hustled his butt trying to keep everyone happy. If you like fish, especially salmon you'll be in heaven! The entertainment they brought on board and Marik's were great, loved the opera and the glass blower. I usually don't review, but after sooo many positive reviews I wanted to be sure you knew things aren't at their best right now. And, for the cruisers willing to give it another try, they are giving future cruise credit to compensate for the disruptions. Read Less

I thought it would be an easier way to see so much of Germany and Austria than to haul my suitcase across the countries. The cabin was comfortable, My favorite part of the ship was the lounge. It was a great place to relax with a drink or a cup of tea. I really liked being able to get a specialty coffee for free whenever I wanted and the cookies were nice in the afternoon after running around exploring all day. The meals were great. Our wait staff was so much fun and so attentive and so very sincerely nice. So many choices. I loved Austria night. The musicians they had on board were so much fun. I loved the talks given about the countries and the history. Very informative. The excursions were a great way to get oriented in the places we traveled. The guides were so knowledgeable and answered my million questions as I am a history buff and wanted to learn about the areas we were in. Not only would I do it again. I am. A girlfriend and I are going on the Egypt cruise with the add ons to Jerusalem and Jordan. I thought Viking was a great value and it truly is traveling in comfort. Just loved it. Read Less

We can't wait to do another one! Thoroughly enjoyed all of the included group tours and added on a few extras whuch were also enjoyable. lots and lots of walking tours included and we added on a few extra tours whuch we also enjoyed. The other guests on our ship were fun to get to know...mostly Americans but some Aussies and Brits so it was fun mix of people and we enkjoyed pretty much everything about the cruise. The staff was absolutely fantastic..our cruise director was amazing..not only very knowledgeable but also very entertaining as well as helppful and patient. The food was fantastic and we were thankful for the walking tours to burn off some of the delicious extra calories we enjoyed daily courtesy of Chef Alex and his incredible crew! The housekeeping staff members were terrific..our rooms were serviced several times a day but we were never disturbed by a knock on the door so I have no idea how they knew when we in the room or out and about. We have already booked another Viking cruise this Spring and are looking forward to joining some friends on another cruise next year! The very best part was that we never once had rough water so between that and the flat bottomed ship getting queasy in rough water was never an issue! Read Less

Friends had taken this cruise a couple years ago and recommended it. We were interested in all the countries and ports in the Grand European Adventure. We spent 2 days exploring Amsterdam prior to the cruise and I would highly recommend it. Viking did everything they could to make the experience enjoyable. Stein, our Program Director, stated on the first day that they strive to Beat your expectations..not Meet them. It showed in everything they did. We were met outside the ship at embarkation by the program director and hotel director who personally carried in our luggage and helped us get checked in. Pros: -Daily Excursions were great. Provided an overview of villages/cities as well as tours of the major attraction (castle/Cathedral). Set the stage for exploring on our own when time was provided. -Morwald Winery Tour - Amazing! Trinka, our guide was delightful, the winery and wine was fabulous. -Ship - perfect size. Loved that we were never 'sold' anything. There are no shops, etc on board. You simply enjoy your time on ship. The longships glide through the water and it is much more relaxing than I expected -Food - absolutely delicious. Very unexpected. Regional specialties every night. I have a food allergy, and Ivan, the Maitre d met with me every morning to go over the menu and guide me through what my choices were. They even offered to cook special items for me. -Wait staff - Very attentive, entertaining, They made each meal special. -Wine/Beer included with meals was a nice addition. Wine served was very good, and regional. -The lounge entertainment was really good. A husband/wife team who provided musical entertainment each day. During cocktail hour, they were nice background music and we could still enjoy conversations with our friends and not compete with them. The musicians they brought on board for our Austrian night were so fun and entertaining. -The nighttime tour of Budapest the last night was absolutely PERFECT. We got to see all of the city lights of the castle, parliament and everything. Such a perfect ending to a perfect cruise. Cons: -Our room. Although the room was more than adequate, we had a bottom level room with port hole. It was incredibly noisy. Woke us up many times in the night. Read Less

We chose the cruise for our 50th anniversary because of recommendations from friends. Everything ran so smoothly from the wonderful dining to the cabin care to the excursions. The crew went above and beyond to make the trip wonderful. We met several couples the first day who we enjoyed sitting with each evening. The Lounge was a wonderful gathering place. We would go there each evening before dinner to hear a review of the next day's activities. Also in the lounge we listened to presenters on the economics of Germany, enjoyed different food tastings, watched glass blowing and listened to special musical groups brought on board to entertain us. There was always a talented duo who entertained in the lounge after dinner. The bus and walking tours were lead by upbeat knowledgeable guides. It was easy to hear the presentations. Because of the locks and bridges, we didn't get to sit on the top deck very often, but we could sit in the lounge and watch out the floor to ceiling windows. We have already booked a Viking cruise to Russia for next year. Read Less

I was invited by a friend, so I was going, just to be going somewhere on a vacation! Little did I know how much I would enjoy the trip and the history of the Netherlands and Belgium. The country is beautiful, the history of what these people have done to survive the wars and north sea is a wonderful experience. The people are truly lovely. Local guides, showing and telling us the local history, plus today's understanding of Europe and was the best part. And oh the FLOWERS. Our visit included the grand gardens on the last day of our trip and it was the best it could be. The food and service was top of the line. The fact that it was a river cruise and a smaller boat was that at our evening meal time, we were able to move around and meet and get to know more than half of the ship... Unlike a ocean cruise. The people then became friends as we went on our group tours too. So I came with one friend and have pictures of almost 30 that I would travel with again! Our Tour guide Steen did a wonderful job of taking care of issues and requests. Viking is the way to go! Read Less

We wanted to see the tulips and Amsterdam and many people recommended Viking. The dining on the Cruise was outstanding. The food was healthy. The portions were the perfect size. There were sufficient choices and every day there were basic choices and more gourmet items, if desired. We met lovely people on the Cruise, mostly in the dining room. I would have liked the option of sugar free desserts, but the dessert choices were not too sweet. I loved the passion fruit served at breakfast. The breakfasts were really great, as wee all the other meals. The Cruise Director did a fabulous job. He was charming, funny, patient and professional. Everyone seemed to appreciate him and his efforts. My favorite Shore Excursion was when we got to spend time at the home of a local family and share coffee and dessert with them. I did this cruise as a mother and daughter cruise for mom's 80th birthday. The ship experience was great for her. She could relax on board when she was tired and go off the ship when she had the energy. She made good use of the walking track on the sundeck for safe walking exercise (especially when the weather was cold and rainy). We really enjoyed the food on board - lots of options on and even off menu (the passion fruit and boiled eggs were a bit hit). We especially enjoyed having lunch (lots of variety from which to choose) on the aquavit terrace. I wandered off on some excursions without her and felt very safe leaving her on the ship. The crew was amazing with her. They got to know her preferences and treated her very well. I've traveled Viking before and will continue to do so. You guys do an amazing job all around. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and we loved it. We have been on a couple ocean cruises previously but we liked the river cruise much better. The personal attention we received was great and the much smaller passenger number made things much more enjoyable. The activities and excursions were well planned and organized. Our cabin was just the right size, clean and well maintained. Our dining experience was excellent with always having delicious choices from the menus. The staff was very personable and helpful, we enjoyed conversing with them. Although the entertainment was not on the scale of a cruise ship it was quite adequate and enjoyable. The optional excursions, which we took advantage of, were excellent. The excursion group sizes were kept small enough that everyone was able to move about without crowding into confined spaces. The wireless audio devices we each had made it very easy to hear what our guides to say. We liked our cruise so much that we signed up for the Paris to Zurich Cruise that will be in March. Read Less

The large TV had information about our course and the next days stop. The TV system crashed a few times but was repaired quickly. Food was great and the servers were very attentive to our needs. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Bring extra cash to tip all the servers and the staff. They deserve it! Also, tip the bus drivers. The Viking web site had guidelines on how much to tip. The tours were good, but we didn't expect to walk so much and so fast. We older guests sometimes had trouble keeping up with the tour speed. The sound system that Viking uses helped a lot.Radio receivers with ear buds were used to keep us linked with the tour guides when the tour group got so stretched out that we lost sight of the group leader. We chose to go on our trip several days early, to both enjoy the Amsterdam area and get acclimated to the time change before starting our river cruise. We were picked up at the airport and taken to our nice hotel, where we spent time with Viking hosts to better plan our time there. They were extremely helpful, we were able to see many key spots in and around the city, and the local transportation was easy to use. We signed up for several tours while there which we enjoyed; Amsterdam is a beautiful city and we would highly recommend spending time there. We easily found our ship "Skadia" near our hotel and we were pleased to see the hotel staff had transferred our luggage to our ship's room by the time we checked in that afternoon. We had several hours to relax and unpack before our informative welcome meeting and first dinner, which was helpful to my wife who had never been on a cruise before. This river cruise with Viking was just excellent and better than advertised in many ways. The trip itinerary was well planned out, the additional shore excursion options were a good value in both time and money spent, the entire crew was professional, friendly and caring. The cabins had everything that we needed and the entire ship was always clean. We enjoyed the daily special touches that Viking added, like special treats after some daily excursions. The cruise director and her guides/drivers did an excellent job with the shore excursions and gave plenty of information to us so that we could get the most out of what we would see each day. We especially liked the narratives on several days cruising through scenic Unesco areas. The hotel manager and especially our cabin staff did a wonderful job taking care of us in a respectful and helpful way. The chef and his crew had interesting menu choices along the trip and helped my wife with her special dietary requirements. The food was very good, the desserts were special, and the friendly and efficient wait staff called us by name by the second day, impressive! We enjoyed sitting at different tables during the day meeting new people as well. The Captain and ship crew provided us with a safe and smooth experience. It was a great way to travel across Europe combining certain sights we would not have seen otherwise, meeting interesting people from across the globe, learning historical facts and visiting spectacular museums, and not having to plan each day's activities. We enjoyed all aspects of the trip and look forward to doing it again in another part of the world. Read Less

I need to start this review by going to the end of the cruise first where we had booked the Prague extension from Budapest, before going home. If we had known this to be an 8 hr bus ride we would not have gone to Prague. This is too long to make any trip enjoyable. the Corinthia hotel is great but there were lots of frowny faces when we got off that bus. Viking never said a word about the distance, they should have. The other concern I have re the Viking management is the way my sister was treated who had just found out her house in Houston was possibly damaged due to hurrican Harvey. the Houston airport was closed of course, she asked the Viking Rep what to do, He said that she must follow the progrom and fly to Amsterdam where " we will see what will happen ! " Does that sound like something you would want to hear? Later they told her she could fly from Amsterdam to NY and then to Dallas where she could stay one night but that offer was only on the table for a short time! Does that sound caring? Travel insurance was with Viking. She wisely decided to stay at the Corinthia in Prague until the Houston airport was open again. KLM the air carrier agreed She never heard from viking again but I am sure they will hear from her .That said our Cruise was excellent .We had already made the lower Danube previously which was even better so were were not new to river cruises The Skadi and crew is a fine vessel and organization. Shore excursions were great My wife and brother inlaw are both severely handicapped but we were able to navigate most of the tours the staff were fantastic ,especially in the dining room This is a great cruise don;t miss it but watch out for management on- shore, it can leave a sour aftertaste.with misinformation or lack of any information. I got to sit with different guests at the smaller table of 6 and got to know people quicker. The staff was more than helpful when I lost contact with my phone or i-pad to keep in touch with my family. I selected this cruise because the itinerary has been on my fridge for 4 years. The price dropped and I got a awesome deal. River cruising is different than ocean cruising so do not expect the same food, entertainment, etc. If you do, you will be disappointed. Cruising rivers in Europe take time with the water levels and locks. The ship was in good shape. Our veranda cabin was nice. When we double docked (yes, this does happen), our balcony was up against the other ship. This is common on the river. Meals varied in cuisine. One restaurant and one more relaxed option is available. Just how many restaurants do you expect to be provided for 180 passengers? Realistically, you cannot expect more. Now for the staff - second to none! The program director Ben is unbelievable. I still do not know when he sleeps. The front desk staff (especially Vivian) are awesome. The hotel staff are great. Restaurant and bar staff are excellent. Even the crew staff (maintenance, navigation, etc.) are excellent. Finally, please note this is a 15 day cruise. What type of people can afford to be gone for over 2 weeks? Old, retired, (and sometimes stuffy) retired people and this is the majority of the passengers. Remember, you are on this cruise to see places and explore the world, not eat, sleep and rock in a chair with fellow cruisers. Read Less

We had a great time on this cruise. Viking has small boats - only holding up to 190 passengers which is perfect for this type of cruising. There was a new port every day and the shore excursions were led by someone who lived in the immediate area. We each had our own listening device so there was never a problem trying to hear what the tour guide was saying. They also provided bottled water for each excursion. The ship was clean and our room was in tip-top shape. The crew was always friendly and professional. There were two locations from which to choose for breakfast, lunch and dinner - you could have a light meal on the Aquivit Terrace or eat in the dining room. Either way the food was very good and plentiful. Wine (white or red) was served with both lunch and dinner. There was a coffee/tea station (with cookies/treats) on each level of the ship.that was always well stocked. Ben, our Program Director was a hoot. He was always available to assist and his English accent added a bit of flair to the various games and entertainment activities that were available. I first saw a Viking advertisement on PBS. A Viking longboat sailing through the Wachau Valley. I thought that it was a nice bit of photoshop but that is EXACTLY what the valley looks like. Stunningly beautiful with the ship serenely floating down the river, with castles and quaint towns on either side. And no, this was not the wine talking. The trip was very relaxing. The scenery gorgeous. You could sit on the deck and watch the world go by, all the while being waited on by Viking staff. Was everything perfect? Well no, it was way, way too hot, and of course we prepared for 60 degree weather per my reviews of weather predictions for the time of year. And some off the venues had way too many tourists. But, as my husband pointed out - the tourists would have been there anyway - whether we planned the trip ourselves or had Viking take care of transportation and ticket purchasing. So let Viking do the work for you. It is well worth the money. Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise and found it was so much more relaxing than ocean cruises. The service was wonderful as was the food. The small ship made it more likely to meet new people. The tours were well led and the guides were easy to hear and understand. Our cabin with a French balcony was comfortable but with very little space to store clothes. Cabins with a regular balcony had almost twice as much storage space. It was fun going through 68 locks rising in elevation and then going back down. It was interesting to see the top deck being collapsed to pass under low bridges and then restored to full height. Also it was nice to have beer and different wine included with each of the the meals. The free WiFi was also appreciated. Overall it was a wonderful cruise and we are looking forward to another river cruise soon. Read Less
