A few days prior to our departure we were advised by Viking that the river levels were low and we might have to change ships, transfer from ship to ship by motor coach and might have to spend a night in a hotel. Sure enough this all took place. Our outstanding and very professional your director, Marie, accompanied us every step of the way. Viking did an excellent job under very adverse conditions over which they had no control but we're extremely well prepared for. With there large number of wonderful identical ships, there were no problems. We had the same room number on both ships. Our last night in Budapest was spent in a shout star hotel. Again, Marie was with us and we felt very well cared for. When we had got skip one port, she arranged for a substitute tour. While we were docked in Vienna, along with 30 or so other ships, I had a chance to walk along and look at other ships. I did not see any ship that I thought was as good as it better than the Viking ships. Our ship was bright, fresh, spotless at all times and the entire crew, with no exceptions, was wonderful. The layout of the ship was excellent. We loved the lounge, where we could relax with our rea, coffee or hot chocolate and enjoy the scenery through the full length windows. We could eat at the buffet there or go down to the dining room. The good was outstanding. Every evening before dinner our tour director briefed us for the next day's events and then the chief would brief us on the evening's menus. We always had three complete menus to choose from - the features menu, a menu with foods typical of the area we were in and a standard menu with steaks and more American selections. We could choose whatever we wanted and it was all excellent. Rooms in all river boats are small due to the size restrictions of the ship. We were in the smallest room and were quite comfortable as we spent little time there as, when we weren't sleeping, we were out enjoying the scenery. The included yours were guided by locals and were excellent. We were all given "quiervoxes" which enabled us to hear the guide from a distance. Overall, Viking is THE BEST. In spite of the problems caused by the low river levels, we felt well cared for and got out money's worth. We were already planning our next Viking cruise when we received a letter informing us that we would be given a discount on our next cruise. We booked that cruise the next day. Read Less

Viking Cruise line, in my opinion, is the low end cruise line. The food was served late and at best was just ok. The staff was very nice. The room was clean. After dinner, usually about 9PM there was little to do unless we were in a port where we could get off the ship. That was not often. Do not pay for a Balcony because you probably won't use it. The cruise ships are lined up side by side so you are looking into another boat's stateroom. You will have to keep your drapes closed when in port. I did walk aboard some of the other ships that were lined up with ours and they were the same size but they had gyms and pools, hot tubs and saunas. We paid for flight up grades and insurance. We had to pay 2700 dollars to change our flights due to the hurricane and we could only change through Viking. We paid for upgrade on our flights and then when we go to Frankfurt we did not have the upgrade! The cabins are so small you are constantly stepping on your room mate and just think after dinner if you don't want to sit in the bar, you are stuck in that little room. Ultimately we spent $20,000.00 on this trip and it was not worth it. Do your self a favor and choose a different cruise line. Read Less

Our friends were already booked on it and told us Viking cruises are wonderful. WE looked forward to seeing Europe from the water perspective as well. First cruise for us and overall, our experience was very good. Food was excellent. Service also was top rate. Thought some ports could have used extra time. Excursions were on the whole quite good. Very informative guides. Would have liked more opportunities to bike in some of these ports. Also, would have been nice to have a small gym with weights available. WEights and perhaps an exercise bike and stair stepper. My husband and I are in our early 50's and I realize the average age of your passengers may be older. I do think Viking is starting to attract a younger adult crowd though and making some accomodations to satisfy that age demographic would be nice. Would definitely travel with Viking again though. Overall, we enjoyed it. Read Less

I chose Viking for the Grand European River Tour (14 day Amsterdam to Budapest) because I thought it was top of the line as per their ads on TV. It was to be the trip of a life time. As a retiree on a limited budget and with limited mobility ( I use a walker) I knew this was to be my last hoorah, it was now or never. I dreamed of this trip for several years. It was expensive but I was sure it would be well worth it. However! due to the extreme heat & drought, the water levels were extremely low & we were unable to travel on the water for the whole trip. The staff was constantly ducking, bobbing & weaving as to what the next step would be though I am sure it was all well planned out ahead of time. They knew early on that the low water levels were going to make sailing difficult. We were put on hot uncomfortable motor coaches for 3 hour jaunts to several different cities. At some points, the original port of call was bypassed entirely and excursions cancelled. When we were actually in the water on the Rhine, we went through at least 68 locks, bumping & banging our way through. The top deck was not accessible for half of the trip. We were moored in inaccessible & not very picturesque sites to the city . . . not at all as advertised & seen in the ads! . . . & had to be bussed, yet again, to the city center. We had to change boats 3 different times (the packing & unpacking added to the other inconveniences). This was NOT at all what we had paid for & expected. It was NOT the leisurely relaxing trip we wanted. It was exhausting & frustrating. The trip should have been cancelled from the get go. The food quality was mediocre with not too many options. The boat staff was excellent nevertheless. Overall not a "referrable moment" & I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, especially since their only response to our feedback thus far has been to offer a discount on a future cruise. This is useless to me as I do not plan to ever travel like that again. DO NOT choose VIKING! Read Less

We are writing this review to express our dissatisfaction with our recent Grand European Tour “river cruise". On July 30, three days prior to beginning our journey, we received notification that we would embark on the Viking Skirnir in Amsterdam, rather than Modi due to low river levels. On Aug. 3, at 9:20 p.m., we received notification that our cruise would not sail as described when we booked it, and the Skirnir was not able to make it to Amsterdam. We were not given the choice to cancel, and frankly, it would have been too late, as we had already left for Amsterdam to begin our 3 day extension. While understanding that Viking has no control over the weather, we cannot be convinced that the company knew nothing of the drought affecting the rivers we were to sail months in advance of our trip. We were told by locals in every city on the cruise that there had been no significant rainfall since May. This fact should have been communicated to the travelers who paid well in advance for a river cruise that was almost certain not to happen as advertised! We should have been given the option to: 1. accept the situation and continue our trip 2. apply the amount to a future cruise when the conditions were favorable for actually cruising the rivers as advertised, or 3. receive a full refund. We believe Viking was deceptive by not fully disclosing this information long prior to the day we already began our travels! The information we received once at the hotel (Hyatt Regency, Amsterdam) was remarkably inconsistent and the Viking representatives were ill-informed. We were told to attend a meeting on Aug. 5 at 6:30 for a briefing about the changes, only to find halfway through the meeting it was for a different ship with the same itinerary. We were not the only Modi people there, so we know the information was miscommunicated to others, as well. We were told our meeting was the following day. When we asked the Viking representatives the following morning about the time of the meeting, we were told it had been canceled. Later that night, we received correspondence in our room detailing the next day’s events, luggage pickup, etc. No mention of our Kinderdijk optional excursion, just a group number of the bus we were to board. Next morning we found out there HAD BEEN a meeting, and we missed some important details. The ineffectiveness of the representatives at that hotel was shameful! As it stood, we were bussed 1.5 hours to Kinderdijk, (misinformation caused us to be in the wrong group for the optional barge tour and we missed it), then 3 hours to Cologne, missing the entire river cruise on the Rhine between these cities. We sailed on the Skirnir for a while, but other than in Cologne, didn’t dock in cities where we could disembark and experience the ports as advertised. We purchased a suite with balcony, only to have the incredibly disappointing view of ugly harbors, recycling stations, and industrial holding areas! Not what we paid for! In addition to this, our ship often dropped us off and then left for another port to dock, so we spent a lot of time being bussed from ship to city to new port (generally ugly, sometimes sandwiched between ships so our view was a mirror image of our own balcony). We were told this was necessary because the ship had to make up for time lost in the never-ending series of locks, which took forever to traverse because of the water levels. This unfortunately cut into the amount of time we spent in the cities (which were all wonderful, by the way, and guides were overall very good). We really could have done without the almost unbearably boring restaurants we visited as a group with our lunch vouchers. There were so many other restaurants and cafes we would have enjoyed exploring. Instead, we were coerced into eating predetermined meals of, frankly, unappealing dishes, with no menu options, prepared in huge quantities and served by wait staff who clearly had no use for Viking and their vouchers! Our top deck was inaccessible for the entire time we spent on the Rhine. I expected a bit of this, but the entire river?? After Nuremburg, we were told we would be bussed clear out to Passau, by-passing Regensburg. This meant if anyone wanted to see this city, it would again require a 2-hour each-way bus trip. Honestly, if we had wanted to take a bus tour through the region, we could have saved ourselves a small fortune and just booked one. When we boarded the Viking Modi in Passau, I asked if the rest of the trip would go as planned, and was delighted to hear a definite affirmative from the desk representative! Things were looking up, and the cruise proceeded down the Danube with sundeck open and beautiful weather, stopping in ports with a view (except when we were double and triple tied off other ships, and were unable to use our balconies or open our blinds) and had access to the cities, just as we had expected for the entire cruise. It was quite lovely at this point! But then the rumor mill kicked in, and stories of other cruisers being bussed to and from Budapest filtered through the proverbial grapevine. Still, the crew said nothing, alluded to nothing, admitted nothing - until they had to the day before we were supposed to sail. So our trip would end with another 3.5 hour bus ride into Budapest…but the good news, according to the crew, was we would be docked on the Hermod at the Chain Bridge, at the very foot and center of the city! So great for exploring. Except that didn’t happen – we were docked two bridges up-river, where only taxis could transport the adventurous. There was no advantage to being on the ship, which was stifling inside. We were told that out of NINE ships stuck in Vienna, the Modi passengers were the only ones who would get to go to a ship. Woohoo. We would have preferred being put up in a hotel (5 stars, as we heard from other Viking travelers) at that point. At least we would have been in the city center. In a nutshell, this was not the trip we booked, not the trip that was advertised, and certainly not the trip we paid for. And nearly everyone onboard agreed. I will be sending this letter to those who provided their email addresses, and we will be expecting compensation for what was clearly a misrepresentation of what we could expect. A refund commensurate with our true experience may convince some to book another cruise with Viking…maybe. This episode has left many with a very bad taste in their mouths. We, ourselves acknowledge that if not for the Mediterranean Odyssey ocean cruise we took with Viking in 2017, we would turn our backs and look for another luxury cruise company. There are certainly many to choose from. That said, we hope that Viking will uphold their reputation and do what is right by their guests. They have offered a 50% voucher on the NEXT trip. We are asking for a 50% refund on this trip, not a voucher for the next, since for many there will be no “next”. Read Less

I had high expectations and they were exceeded. The staff was excellent and we felt absolutely pampered. The Viking staff made an extraordinary effort to learn all passengers names early on the voyage, creating a special atmosphere and a feeling of being a guest on their ship. Food and food service were very good and were of a very good variety. The cruise director was personable and did a great job of logistics and keeping everyone informed of daily activities. Our cabin was tended to three times daily by a member of the housekeeping staff. Shore excursions were all good, some guides better than others, but that is to be expected. None were substandard. My wife was hesitant about the cruise and she has rated it as best trip ever. I highly recommend this Viking cruise. We are currently planning another Viking cruise and am excited to embark on it. We have friends who have taken Viking and they praised their experience. The Grand European Cruise fit the way we wanted to celebrate our 41st anniversary. The friends were correct in their praise. From the moment we stepped onboard until the day we departed, the service and experience was amazing. I consider myself very organized but I have never seen such a level of organization. Nothing was left to chance. The staff worked very long hours and yet they always had a smile and I was amazed they could remember not only our names but favorite items during the meals. This level of service and pride only comes when the company rewards what they want the customer to experience. To have every member of the staff we encountered also display that level is amazing. I have managed teams for two decades and I never had a team so uniformly deliver the results the company professed in their ads. The ship was immaculate, the room were spotless and we were always asked if we needed anything. I remember the comment that most guests gained ten pounds because of the excellent food. It was certainly excellent but I lost seven pounds because of all the opportunities to take the daily or twice daily shore excursions. The excursions had excellent guides and they really brought out the history and culture of the regions as we cruised. The Viking Cruise lne is not just an experience, it was an amazing trip from every aspect. We plan more trips with you in the future. We want to go where Viking goes. Read Less

Booked this river cruise because friends invited us to join them. From our arrival in Amsterdam to our departure 2 weeks later, in Budapest, everything went perfectly. Included tours were just the right length and very informative. We especially liked the tour guide communication earphones, which made it easy to hear and follow the guides narration. Meals were outstanding and the service was the best. Dinners were wonderful with great choices every night. One of the optional tours, a visit to the Royal Lipizzan Stallions, was one of the outstanding parts of our cruise. Castle and Cathedrals were an every day experience and were outstanding. Viking's policy of no children was very appealing to us. We didn't want the distraction of children in the dining room, buses or tours. Our cabin was very nice - comfortable bed - adequate storage - nice bath and shower. The housekeeping staff was top notch. If I could find anything that I had a problem it was the WiFi. When it worked it was okay but very slow. The other problem we had was with one guide ( not Vikings fault) he was awful. We mentioned it to viking and were told others had also complained and they were dealing with it. We are already planning our next river cruise with Viking for 2020. Read Less

Our traveling partners chose the cruise line and dates. I just went along for the ride. Glad I did. Viking did everything right; the logistics, keeping the ship clean; gourmet meals representing different cuisines; friendly staff. The shore excursions were well orchestrated and interesting. Having guides who lived in the towns we visited make it very interesting. Learned alot about many different cultures. Wish we had time to do every excursion offered. Due to the slow speed on the Rhine, Viking docked, we boarded buses into the town so we could make the most of our day. Then we were bused back to the ship in another location. This was very smart on Viking's part. Instead of us sitting on the boat and wasting time, we were able to spend more time touring the towns. My only complaint was that I wish there was more 'free' time allotted in each port of call. The food on the ship was superb. Delicious food and lovely presentations. The meals were nicely portioned so we could try many different types of food. Not like the 'all you can eat' buffets on big ocean ships. Will definitely look into booking another viking river cruise in the near future. Read Less

Our cruise director gave us fantastic information on each of the ports, and we were given maps of the area when we disembarked, so we felt well prepared when we went out on our own. We also had local live musicians on board on a number of evenings, who were outstanding and a real treat for those of us who were enjoying experiencing the culture of the region. The dinners were also reflective of the local cuisine, which we enjoyed immensely. In addition, our cruise director brought us together for some fun games and activities in the evening, and we left feeling like we had many more friends as a result of this adventure. My brother chose this cruise for his 70th birthday trip as he had wanted to try a river cruise.Embarkation was very slick, airport pick up and transfer vehicle were on point. The dining experience was excellent as were the staff in the dining room and bar area,in fact all of the Viking Modi staff are exemplary and a credit to the company. The tours are very well organised and timings are a good blend of very knowledgeable local tour guides and time to explore alone before sailing on. Entertainment was a little limited, the shake up duo were talented but for the most part had the same play list every night with a few evenings exceptions. I am pretty sure they ramped up the sound in the lounge area a couple of nights in which made conversation impossible therefore the lounge was invariably deserted by 10pm. A couple of nights we had entertainment from locals, opera in Vienna, Hungarian folk music etc which was very enjoyable. Our main disappointment was that the sun deck was closed for 5 days of the trip an occurance which was not clearly documented anywhere in the brochure or mentioned at the time of booking by our travel agent (if TA was even aware of the fact), this meant that outside space was limited to a small area at the bow of the ship and the two side balconies, speaking for my husband and myself we were going stir crazy as my husband likes to walk the deck and take photographs, the walking track, small putting area and deck quoits could not be used. The majority of our sailing companions were very well travelled and educated people with the exception of a few who were avoided sometime with difficulty as escape routes were few. Read Less

We chose this time to travel because it is normally so Hot and Humid in Houston Texas, and we wanted to avoid the heat. We arrived 2 days early in Amsterdam to adjust to the time change before the cruise and see more sights in Amsterdam. We learned too late that the way to travel from the airport to the City was via the public rail transit. It is cheap and reliable. Buy a day pass for the number of days you are in Amsterdam. Once on the Modi, Viking handled everything for us - We has booked a AA-Veranda Suite and it was well worth the extra $$ - we had a seating area that made it relaxing in our room and this level offers free laundry ( which we started using after a few days into the cruise). The room was on the highest deck which was much quieter than the decks below, especially going through the Locks. The open seating was fun as we shared meals with people from all over the world. the quality of food was outstanding. I got to explain the US Electoral College to several people that were interested in the USA election for President and were wondering why it was not only the popular vote. One set of friends we met will meet us on our next Viking Cruise in January 2019. The included tours were always good and the extra tours purchased ahead of time were also fun and entertaining. Don't miss Salisbury - it was fun with scenes where The Sound of Music was filmed. We especially enjoyed the grand tour of Vienna - Waltz dance lessons, a fabulous lunch at a famous restaurant, and a walking/bus tour of Vienna with a spectacular guide. In true Viking fashion, we were transported by Mercedes to the next port and provided lunch with beer and wine and our included excursion. They provided escorts and up to date information on what was happening. The ports and excursions provided a lot of historic background which made us able to understand some of current situations. At the end of the cruise, we took an extension to Prague. The included and optional excursions were fantastic. The only bad part was the Corinthia Hotel in Prague where the air conditioning did not work. Read Less

WE arrived in Amsterdam after an overnight flight from ATL-AMS on KLM. Great flight and crew with KLM. Viking met us at baggage claim and gave us VIP treatment to ship. (Our airfare was part of the cruise fare.) We had made the same cruise about 8-9 years ago Budapest to Amsterdam on Viking but this was in the opposite direction. (AMS-BUD). What a big improvement in the MODI over our previous Viking ship! While we had "basement" cabins both cruises, Modi was much improved with bigger cabin and bathroom. Really enjoyed the big screen TV and outside cameras of locks and scenery. Attention to service from the crew was outstanding! Especially in dining and bar areas. All made us feel special and the extra attention we haven't seen on the many ocean cruises we have made in the past. There was more transporting by bus than we had on previous cruise but we understand why since ship can't count on lock availability when needed since locks are so much busier now and cruise lines can not get scheduled lock times like they used to have. Viking has a fleet of dedicated Viking buses to handle us and does it well. Only complaint is we sometimes had long waits in towns to get back to ship but understand the logistics of getting the ship, passengers and buses together at the same time. It boils down to --river cruising has become very popular in Europe and there is just so much room for docking in town. The tours were very nice and well staffed with qualified guides. Headsets were great and needed by us older folks! Ports were well thought out and really interesting. Due to high water for passing under bridges, we were unable to make the wine tour of the Wachau Valley but do understand it was no fault of Viking. Only negative comment about the cruise. We were one of three couples on the cruise. WE all bought trip cancellation from Viking. One of our couples had a medical problem and had to return home early and 2 1/2 months later, they are still waiting for insurance co. to settle up with them for their airfare home and other parts of the cruise they were unable to complete. Viking was very helpful to them in arranging for airfare home at a more reasonable fare than the airlines offered. Also, folks at front desk on ship were very helpful in arranging transportation for the other two couples from BUD-Prague at the end of the cruise. Read Less

We chose Viking’s Grand European cruise because I wanted to see the Robber Baron's' castles on the Rhine. We did that and so much more. Viking Modi traveled from Budapest to Amsterdam on three rivers and two canals. We passed through 68 locks and under a multitude of bridges. Our onshore excursions took us to castles and palaces, cathedrals and synagogues, marketplaces and cemeteries, cities and towns. Expert tour guides explained art and history. We ate marvelous food and drank excellent wines. We made friends and shared experiences with other mature, educated passengers who wanted to learn about the world and were more interested in education than entertainment. I climbed to the top of a cathedral, made weisswurst in Germany, attended a Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna, and saw masterpieces in Amsterdam's two world-class museums. Our journey was as busy and as relaxing as we wanted it to be. The crew treated us like royalty every mile of the way. This was our second Viking River Cruise and we are both eager to take another one. I recommend Viking highly to all my friends and relatives. We wanted to try a slower paced cruise and fell in love with Viking Cruises. We arrived a couple of days before we set sail to explore our destination city of Amsterdam and stayed again in Budapest after the cruise which I'd highly recommend. Viking staff are top notch and our cruise director was the best. Because of low waters on the river we had to change ships and it was handled so smoothly we hardly missed a beat. Food was excellent, excursions were wonderful and so interesting and the onboard entertainment was very good. As the ship is smaller than large cruise liners we made friends easily and met some wonderful people from different parts of the world. Our dinner table was always a great place to catch up on our days activities. We have taken many other cruises but river cruising is by far the most relaxing. We loved every minute and have already booked again for August 2017. Can highly recommend Viking River Cruises. Read Less

All of our cruise was fabulous! We added a land portion in Ghent and Brugges for two nights which was very interesting. Then we boarded the Viking Modi in Amsterdam. The windmills in Holland were so picturesque and very historical to visit. The glass blower on board ship was very entertaining and a fun way to purchase gifts for back home. Our trip to Salzburg was a very special treat since we are both retired music directors and we were fascinated to walk in Mozart's steps, etc. In short, we loved all the individual countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria & Hungary), all of the excursions that we offered plus the additional ones we booked, the wonderful food on board, our cosy cabin, great service, fabulous cruise director. Our extra land cruise in Budapest was slightly too long. All in all, we couldn't have been happier. Thanks for a fabulous time! Read Less
