Truly, truly beyond expectation. Everything was expertly handled; ship, cabin (spent very little in), food, leisure time, staff was very professional, but friendly. One morning I looked out the window at breakfast and our wonderful captain was carrying out the garage. Employees worked as a team from all appearances. The inclusive tours were wonderful. I am a widow and have no one to travel with, but I would like to think I will go again. I wish there was a way “singletons” could travel because it is a safe environment to be in on the ship and tours. Speaking of tours, the guides were excellent, personable & knowledgable. All meals were great, chief Adiran was always at the doors to greet cruisers with the other head dining personnel. Meals were quite and leisurely. The young lady in housekeeping for our area was very pleasant and accommodating; going beyond the car of duty. Sorry I can’t remember her name. This being my first river boat cruise, I found the guest services exceptional. Erna our Viking cruise director was so patience with everyone. Plus she extremely knowledgable about EVERYTHING!!! This was a family vacation. Eight family members went with ages ranging from 70 to 40. The cruise included interesting events for all age groups. The option of tours covered all of our age groups -- or you felt comfortable NOT taking a tour that day and just staying on board the ship.I only wish that the ship could be docked in an area where you could just leave and explore the town close to the ship. We only had that happen once on this trip. The food was excellent and plentiful -- you only go hungry if it's by your own choice. The staff was friendly and helpful and always available. I would recommend this cruise and this cruise line to anyone who wants to take a relaxing, pleasant and scenic cruise on the Rhine. The on board entertainment was excellent and geared to those traveling on that particular cruise. It was the best cruise ever! Read Less

This cruise had all the elements we were looking to achieve as an experience that led to our commitment/marriage in Paris at the end of our trip. The Swiss pre cruise was a memorable experience and I would highly recommend it. The excursions, both included and addons, were all excellent and really make the river cruise the valuable experience we expected. The customer service. cabin, dining and entertainment were all 5 star and what we have come to expect from Viking. The staff helped us with our Paris extension plans and arranged for an upgrade to a larger hotel room that made our wedding preperations much easier. Beginning with the first contact we made with Viking for this once in a lifetime trip, the support from Viking Air, the airport meet and greet and departure co ordination, the Swiss staff, the ship's crew and ground staff in Paris, all our expectations were exceeded. We went on this cruise on the recommendation of close friends (all of us in our early 70's) that we join them. They had thoroughly enjoyed a previous Viking river cruise (Amsterdam to Budapest) and wanted to take another. My husband and I had never taken a cruise, mostly because we were never enticed by the concept of a-week-at sea-with-4000-of-your-closest-friends. Our trip that started in Zurich for two days, then cruised from Basel to Trier and ended with two days in Paris with 180 very interesting people - and we met most of them - was a singular experience. It seemed that no detail was overlooked or left to chance. My husband is convinced after our trip that Viking has an extraordinary emphasis on a thorough "systems analysis" of everything about cruise vacations, learning from each trip how to improve all aspects from food, to tours, to staff selection and training, to ship design, to baggage handling, and more. It shows, and the result, which we experienced on our trip, was first rate. Our meals were excellent, although it took several days before we thought to ask for smaller portions and ate less! Wine selections were well paired with entree choices; our chef was exceptional and willing to share recipes. He even treated us to not-on-the-menu very fresh white asparagus one evening because he found it in a local market. Our program director was ever so effective, and her descriptions each evening of what to expect the next day were thorough and presented with enthusiasm that encouraged us to participate in the tours. And whoever it is who chooses the tour guides in each town is to be commended; they were all humorous, welcoming, and very informative. We learned, and were reminded of, much history of Germany and France. The evenings in the lounge after dinner were relaxing, and often exposed us to local culture. Just enough entertainment to fuel camaraderie without being over-whelming, And the serving staff members in the dining room were so charming and helpful that we were not at all offended when they gently suggested that perhaps we could (finally) move to the lounge after dinner and let them prepare the dining room for breakfast! We were exceptionally impressed by the Hild's captain and his senior staff. A remarkable team, and very personable. Another example of Viking cruises' attention to the details that matter. Not everything was perfect, though nothing detracted from the overall experience. The ship had no exercise equipment, although we walked a great deal that worked off some of the calories. Our hotel in Paris was just okay (we were really spoiled by then), but close to the Eiffel Tower and some great restaurants. And there were several places where we docked (e.g., Strasbourg) and would have liked to have had more information about the immediate area. In Strasbourg, we were docked in a park, Le Jardin des Deux Rives, which was perfect for an after dinner walk but all the historical signs were in German or French. Alas, we only speak English and no one on board knew the history of this interesting spot. Just a brief printed handout would be enough. Would we take another Viking cruise? We are already signed up for the Viking Homelands ocean cruise next May, and are eagerly awaiting this different kind of experience. Read Less

From the time we landed in Amsterdam we were treated with professionalism. We explored Amsterdam and was able to soak in some of the culture there. The food was excellent on our ship especially breakfast, The wait staff was very nice. Dinner time was a way to meet different people from all over the USA. We will definitely be going on another Viking cruise. The cabins are a little small but our French Balcony was very accommodating. I cannot say enough about our wonderful cruise director Emma and our ships captain. The guides on our excursions were knowledgeable. We chose the Rhein river cruise in June which was perfect weather. I cannot see myself cruising on those big ships anymore Vikings crew gave us personal care. This was our 17th wedding anniversary and the kitchen staff treated us very nice. We are planning on doing the Egypt cruise. I recommend Viking to anyone. Read Less

Everything was great, the service, food, excursions. We would leave for breakfast and our room would always be clean when we got back to our room after breakfast. I can not say enough good things about this cruise. We would go in a heart beat again. Worth the price without a doubt. I think because there was only 185 people on the ship, it makes the service very personal. Everyone was there to please you. There was so much food at every meal you could always find something you liked. Gourmet or just a burger they had it all. Also oh coukd have as much wine and beer at lunch and dinner as you wanted. They were very generous you did not have to ask your glass was always full. We signed up for all the extra excursions and was very glad we did. The excursions were all great and worth the extra money. The excursions that were included were also very nice. Read Less

We just returned about a week ago from a 7 (?) night cruise on the Rhine on the Viking Hild. Our first trip to Europe. What a wonderful experience. The ship/cruise director Mathias, is about as good at his job as anyone we've ever seen. Super friendly, upbeat, informative, humorous, fun, etc. ... but so was everyone else. You get the feeling they all like what they do and they all get along. The bartenders, servers, etc., all just superb! The excursions (all included) were top notch.... (we chose a couple extra optional ones)... Loved Strasbourg, France!... The Cologne Cathedral is jaw dropping, the medieval castles sop interesting.... Being from Northern California, we are kind of wine snobs. We purchased the beverage package, which is unlimited cocktails, sodas, wines from the dinner wine list, etc. A great value at $300. per couple/room for the entire week.. I think they lost money on us. The nice selection of red wine lacked anything to die for..... By the last night however, we had figured out what was the best red.....and it was not one of the more expensive european ones. It was a less expensive California red. They have no problem if you bring your own wine on board. No corkage fee. Next time we bring a case of assorted killer California reds to last the week. Overall this cruise from 1 to 10 was a 15!!! As avid travelers, who are hard to impress, we can honestly say...we were VERY impressed. We booked through Costco travel, and there was a $700. Costco gift card waiting in the mailbox when we returned.... We also got a $100. on board credit for booking thru Costco, which we applied to our drink package - reducing it to $200. upon settling our bill. Read Less
