brochures and promo not accurate. We knew low bridges would restrict us from using the sun deck at time. But not for days on end. We knew at some ports of call we would be double and triple banked. It happened too many times to be comfortable. So don’t get a Balcony. All this information should be spelt out and told how many times it would happen. in the promo. Cologne was the only port we had local entertainers in the Evening. Unfortunate we missed it due to going on an evening excursion. Promo gives you the impression this happened every night. Where possible. Our Entertainment Director Kane was brilliant so he made up for the disappointment. Could not fault staff. Staff brilliant food good enough could we have a chocolate treat with coffee. tours OK I got churched out talked out and walked out in the end. I thought the quiet vox was a device so you could wander around the sights by yourself if you did not want to be hearded like sheep around the sights, I stayed with tour group in case I missed out on something amazing. And the fear of getting lost. Make sure you have plenty of 50c Euro coins for toilets. overall enjoyed my trip. We made the Journey without changing boat. We were the last boat to do this from to Passau. The band was very average but the nights where Kane had quizzes and trivia were hilarious. Read Less

We signed up for this cruise because it coincided with peak tulip time in the Netherlands. Despite the crowds Viking was able to provide access to sites that generally avoided the crowds and gave us a good insight into the people and culture of Holland. Although a bit nippy at times the weather was excellent. The tours were generally extremely well done - although in Amsterdam museums would be better visited on one's own. The guides were well-informed. The food was great - variety, complimentary wine and beer The wait staff was superb - prompt, attentive, friendly. Game nights were hilarious. Pre-dinner talks from the master chef were an event to be looked forward to. The entire staff was extremely helpful, good-natured and provided advice and many small extras that made the cruise special. Embarkation and debarkation were handled very efficiently. I would not look elsewhere for a river cruise! While the cruise offered a lot there were several areas that we visited on our own by renting a car and getting local guides to visit special sites: Madurodam, Den Haag, Delft, Amersfoort, Leeuwarden, Franeker, Harlingen, and Marken. We wanted to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with a trip that was big and exotic! We travelled to Hawaii for our 35th anniversary and needed something bigger and better. We had been to Europe previously twice before but not since 1980 and then 1989. We loved Europe!! Then we saw an advertisement on our local TV station. GRAND EUROPEAN CRUSIE ON VIKING! We contacted the travel agent advertising this trip. Francis from Travel with Us Inc. did all the leg work. From the time we boarded the plane to Europe to the time we landed back home in Edmonton we had a great experience. There were a couple of hiccups with the low water levels in a couple of areas but Viking handled everything with great professionalism. Viking never left us guessing of what to expect. it felt like these hiccups were just part of the experience. The ship was very clean, the cabin was always cleaned promptly, the food was excellent with tons of food choices, the entertainment was cultural and fun, the staff were always courteous and helpful, the tours were handled like well greased machines, the ships tour director was very knowledgeable and just a perfect personality for a job well done. Five star all the way Viking!! Read Less

The two week, Grand European River Cruise appealed to us much more than a weeklong cruise. We believed it would allow us to “settle in” without immediately counting how many days we had left. And “settle in” we did. We began in Amsterdam after a four day jet jag adjustment in Amsterdam. Embarkation was efficient and welcoming, and the wine tasting on the Aquavit Terrace was a grand introduction. We were immediately impressed with our stateroom, and the overall condition and appearance of the Viking Longboat. Exceeding both were the professionalism and warmth of the ship’s staff. The variety of food and beverage selections ensured there was something for everyone. Service was outstanding, as was the quality of the meals, from breakfast through dinner. Shore excursions offered were varied and appropriate. Guides were uniformly outstanding, from personality and communication skills to their professional knowledge. It was hard to depart in Budapest. We wanted the cruise to never end. We came with very high expectations, and they were exceeded in all respects. Read Less

We always sail with Viking because they are so excellent at looking after you in every way. The food was wonderful, accommodations were impeccable, and the service was excellent. The places we visited were astounding, so full of history and stories and visually stunning. Buses were very comfortable, well organized and even though the Danube water was low and we ended up on buses a lot from the ports to the city centers, we got a unique opportunity to see more of the countryside and small villages. The guides were exceptionally well informed, friendly and very accommodating. We've made so many friends on these cruises with Viking and still keep in touch with most of them. I always look forward to traveling down these beautiful European rivers and relaxing on the top deck to see castles, mountains, and local people going about their daily lives. I'm always very interested in how people live, where they live and how happy everyone seems to be. Read Less

This was my 7th Viking Cruise... and sailed again with Viking because we have ALWAYS had the finest serviced and experience on every ship and Cruise we've been on with Viking. Ships are magnificent... clean and comfortable. Crew and staff are always first rate... always there to help, service is beyond reproach, in fact laudatory .... "service with a smile" ... the breakfast chef even knew my name on the second day and remembered my mundane breakfast order before I arrived at his station!!!! On tours, optional or otherwise, we never felt "lost" or felt the effort ( or $$ ) wasn't worth it ! Again, another great trip with Viking. A plus and a major reason for choosing Viking is that there are no casinos on board, nor ferris wheels, or sandboxes for juveniles ( though you will find a putting green ! ). The Viking experience is pleasurably a 55+ community on the water ... and please keep it that way!! Read Less

My wife and I saved and planned for a couple of years to take a 14 day romantic river cruise through Europe, our dream vacation. It turned out to be the worst trip we have ever taken. To summarize; 36.45 hours on a bus, 14.25 hours of free time to explore the towns visited, 10 hours of daylight cruise, includes 3 hours of Rhine valley cruise during 2 hr lunch on lower level of rented tourist day boat, changed boats after bus transfer, upper deck closed most of trip, unpack/pack 3 times, optional tours a great disappointment. Viking knew about river issues for weeks, yet no communication, rescheduling or cancelation allowed We did not board the boat until the 4th day, after docking at a gravel pit. Due to hotel stay for 1st two nights, all the busing and lunches serving 200 people at once in local restaurants, not on the boat, as advertised, we did not get full use of the "Silver Drink Package". We had to change boats 1/2 way through the trip, thus another long bus ride and lost time cruising. Most cruising at night. Ships were docked 3 deep thus we had to walk through other ship lobbies or across their upper deck and could not use our balcony as the next boat was 6 inches away. We passed through 69 locks BUYER BE AWARE, 2 weeks later, still no call from Customer Service as promised. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we had done the same cruise from the other direction, viz. Budapest to Amsterdam in October 2012, and enjoyed it so much we encouraged friends to go and we accompanied them. Unfortunately because of the the hot weather and lack of rainfall the Rhine and Danube were impassable in several spots. This required meeting the ship just past Cologne instead of at Amsterdam. The Viking staff were truly excellent in explaining the reasons for the problem, keeping passengers informed and arranging very pleasant alternate accommodation in Amsterdam. None of the scheduled visits/tours were missed but they did require bus rides to the various destinations. In mid-cruise we had to transfer to an identical ship again because of low water. Part of the pleasure of cruising for us is not having to unpack and repack suitcases every few days. This pleasure we had to forego, but it wasn't a serious problem. We were very pleased to receive an apology and a credit equal to 50% of the cost of the cruise toward a future cruise with Viking. Apart from the problems caused by Mother Nature to which cruises of all kinds are subject, this cruise met our expectations, which were high. We have already booked a future ocean cruise with Viking as a result. Our experiences with the staff and life on board were uniformly excellent. We particularly enjoy the fact that there are almost no extra costs unlike almost all other cruise lines. Read Less

From the moment you board the ship you will be treated to an amazing experience. The staff was exceptional...from the room steward to the wonderful restaurant staff. Every day is a treat as a tour quide will accompany you on a great excursion. The afternoons included interesting lectures given by artisans, the ship captain, professors from universities and a few days of cruising the beautiful rivers dotted with picturesque riverbanks. The program director, Wez, worked tirelessly to ensure that all on board had a wonderful experience...in spite of two seamless ship swaps due to low water levels on the Danube. I would also like to commend Mae and Normandy for their exemplary service among the restaurant waitstaff of the Viking Gefjon...and also server Edison on the Viking Ve. The meals were delicious...from the best breakfast menu to all of the regional selections that are offered daily. Be sure and stop at the coffee and cookie station located by the library. Would definitely recommend the Viking River Cruises to be added to your bucket list! Read Less

On our first Viking Cruise we had Viking make all our flight arrangements and this worked with out flaw, perfect, easy, zero problems. Yes I did check to see if I could get better connections, and cheaper fares on my own, I could not. Using Viking Air is the way to go. As a yacht captain, I can see well past any ship board facade, and it is clear to me Viking is the clear stand out in European river cruises. This conclusion is after 3 cruises with Viking and the opportunity to view other river cruise operators close up (as in rafted up alongside). What makes Viking stand out? The largest fleet, this allows Viking to accommodate their passengers when things go wrong, such as low/high water, mechanical failures, by having enough long ships to substitute ships and not have to cancel the entire voyage. Viking has the newest ships and built to a very high standard. The interiors are well appointed in a modern tasteful fashion. The staterooms are very nice, and the heated bathroom floor is one of my favorite things. The dining, I personally am pretty easy to please in this department. but I'll give a 1-5 rating, 5 being the best. Menu 5 Presentation 5 Taste 3.5-4.0 There are no "5's" on board any ships (fresh vs refer/frozen) Waitstaff 6 best in the business, (remembered my name by second day). Honestly I am amazed how well the food service operates, seamlessly serving 200+ people in less than 90 minutes. Among the ship board activities I really enjoyed the "Port Talk" and there were some fun night time games in the lounge ( I did win a bottle of champagne, for coming in last place in the trivia game one night). Not going to candy coat some of the ports, I understand first hand how the preferred dockage/berth may not always be available, and that there will be times multiple ships will have to "raft up" (obscuring your stateroom view) to make port. That is just the way it is, in certain cases you may have pass through other ships to go ashore. The up side for me was that passing through other non Viking river boats assured me that I had made the best choice going with Viking. The shore excursions, only wish we could do them all. We did have one tour guide that was not ready for prime time, but one bad apple does not spoil the bunch. We traveled as husband and wife, no children and toured Italy and Greece after our cruise. As of now we are planing to do a Viking river cruise every year. Read Less

They made us feel very special. We cannot say enough about our delightful cruise. I have told everyone I know how exceptional Viking Cruise Line is. Our meals were delicious. Each evening our Chef would describe the special entrees and desserts. The servers were all polite and very personable. Our Captain always spoke to us and we felt very safe knowing that he was in charge of the ship. The excursions were wonderful, very special and different. We learned so much about the areas we visited. We were able to take our time and never felt rushed. Our program director was a delight. We all met every evening and she would tell us about our plans for the next day. The entertainment was great. Again I cannot say how wonderful the crew and staff were. We have no complaints. We decided to take this cruise because our experience on our trip through Russia was so positive. On that cruise we were a group of 6 and here just my husband and I . It was a very different experience. The most remarkable was meeting another couple who got married the same date we did, December 14, 1968. Never before had we found that. The ship is rather comfortable but when the upper deck is closed for 5 days, it curtails the possibility of pleasant outdoors accommodations. Smokers in Europe are a problem. On board, they were very unpleasant to have around. If you went outside to enjoy the view and the weather, there always was someone ruining the air by the smell of their smoke. The shore excursions were mostly a pleasure. Most guides were excellent but not all. If we could comment about them at the end of the day, our recollection could be much more accurate. The upholstery in the gathering lounge is not real leather and I found myself stuck to the furniture anytime it was hot. All in all, we signed up for another cruise in the future so we were not unhappy:) Read Less

We really enjoyed our wait staff. They were friendly, helpful and all-around wonderful. Shore excursions were well organized and the local guides were, for the most part, interesting and well informed. We felt rushed at some locations such as busy museums and palaces. There was no time to stop and admire displays as the guides were rushing everyone through. The audio equipment worked well but some guides were a bit hard to understand. The biggest disappointment was no reliable WiFi on the ship. Viking should not advertise having it as it almost never worked. They really need to fix it or set the expectations correctly. The only way to get online was to find places with WiFi during port stops which wasn't always easy. Read Less

We liked it so much we already booked another river cruise next year for our 30th wedding anniversary. The thing we like most about this cruise was the size. It was nice and small. We weren’t a number. The staff always addressed us by name. We went on the Tulip and Windmills cruise. The gardens were stunning. We even had the opportunity to visit a home . That was wonderful. The trip was called Tulips and Windmills and included much more. My wife was more interested in the tulips and I was more interested in the windmills and technology. However the historical sights we visited were of great interest to both of us. It was a good mix of tours and times to rest and relax. There was some WWII history and some medieval history in the mix. The tour guides were excellent. They were knowledgeable and interacted well. It was always comfortable and friendly. The meals and menu selections were excellent. The chef specials at dinner were excellent as were the wine choices. Dessert was always tasty. We enjoyed the fact that dinner was casual plus but not dress up. It was the right mix for a trip that featured tours and walking in the morning and either an afternoon trip or relaxing in the afternoon. One of the best parts was the people we met. It seemed like everyone we met shipboard was friendly and engaging. A great part of that was the crew who was so pleasant that you could not help but feel that you were all welcome. In discussion one of them mentioned that he had started with another cruise line and had worked his way up to get to being a Viking member. There was pride in the company. The cruise director, Kane Davies, was extremely competent and had the knack of making everyone feel that they were important. We'd love to have him again and we are saving up for another cruise. We have just returned from our Viking Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest, with 2 additional days each in Amsterdam and Prague.. We departed on September 5, 2017 and returned on the 25th. This was a celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary We chose Viking because of their fine reputation and ship size. There were 186 passengers with a ship staff of 52. Most passengers are aged 45+ and the ships, tours, and staff are designed for that age group. From the first day to the last, this trip was nothing short of magnificent. From our arrival in Amsterdam to our departure from Prague the Viking staff was there to assist us and attend to our needs and comfort. Viking exudes “attention to detail.” At all stages of this trip our luggage was handled in an expeditious manner, whether from arriving at the airport, to the Hilton (Amsterdam), to the ship, to the Corinthia (Prague), to the airport . Not one problem. We could write a book on the ship and staff but, suffice to say, it could not fully describe this great experience. Nothing was overlooked. The staff could not do enough for each and every guest. Breakfast a morning joy. Lunch was a daily treat. Evening dinner was a delightful culinary experience. Prior to dinner, we enjoyed time in the lounge. Just about any beverage you would ask for was available (suggestion - purchase the drink package). In addition, there was always some special treat being served. Every evening there was a briefing on the next days activities, that evenings dinner choices, and post-dinner activities. There were a number of interesting programs and lectures which were offered to the guests Side-tours: many are included and many are at additional cost. We did both and were completely satisfied with Viking’s professional guides. Lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes. Important – the tours are designed from easy to somewhat strenuous so read the tour descriptions carefully. Weather – nature is in charge. This may sound minor, but Viking supplies great umbrellas. Clothing – We made the error of bringing way too much. We discovered that 95% of the men and women wore jeans or other comfortable garb. There were no formal evenings. Finally, repeat all the above. River cruising is intimate and relaxing. I would have liked the top deck to be open more but with the locks and bridges that was not possible. The on ship entertainment was nice, the food and service in the dining room was topnotch. The daily tours were informative and the tour guides had a good command of the English language, were always knowledgeable and eager to share with us their area knowledge of the area. I liked that there was always a tour group that went at a slower pace for the individuals who were not able to physically keep up, there were quite a few people with walking aids on the trip and they were treated the same as the other guests and had the same opportunities for the tours as the others due to having the slower paced group. I always kidding with friends anyone book a river cruise and I will join them I got the call come join us and we did! This was the best itinerary covered all the ports we wanted. Took a day or two to understand this was different kind of trip. All the planning is done- you just enjoy! Embarkation was super easy we had Viking air & were met at the airport and take to the ship. Our cabin was ready for us and nice surprise. We had a quick snack upstairs and off to explore the city with the local guide from Viking. We learned that you must follow the times for meals or not eat. there is no anytime buffet but there were cookies and hot drinks. Most of the local guides were good and we learned a lot. visited many churches on our own. One thing we sis realize was that we were in certain towns on Sunday and that on those days nothing was open. I would make sure that next time not to spend a Sunday in Cologne. we took the optional Rothenburg ob der Tauber tour and it was the best! Highly recommend! We also did the tour with Ship Chief to the marketplace so much fun!. German night on the ship was amazing! We were told that the river was very low and we would be portaging around but We were lucky not to have to change ships to the Ve half way thu. Our Cruise Director David was always where you need him. We would stay after the tours in the city and then have to find the meeting place for bus back to the ship and He was there very time to assure us we were in the right place. Debarking from the ship was easy but Budapest airport not so much. terrible long lines to check in-- the flight was late which didn't give us much time to connect in Amsterdam. Next time I would ask for more connection time. I would definitely book again with Viking! Read Less

This was our first river cruise as we had previously enjoyed four ocean cruises with another cruise line. The itinerary of this cruise really appealed to us and it didn't disappoint. We chose not to use Viking air and booked our own air from IAD to Budapest flying KLM, it was a direct flight and we were impressed with their service. We also chose not to book with Viking for our pre and post travel hotels. Embarkation was smooth and we were immediately impressed with the service. Shout out to David, Chef Joey, Alan the maitre de, Dylon(sp) the bar tender and Stephan one of the many outstanding servers. I was impressed with all the tours and how smoothly everything ran. The only negative was we had purchased a cabin with a balcony and really couldn't use it due to the way Viking docks at most ports. I called customer service today and they issues us a credit, class organization. The cabin was much smaller than on the ocean lines, but comfortable, clean and plenty of storage room for the 15 day cruise. Loved the heated floors in the bathroom. The food was much better than on the ocean cruises and this includes the speciality dining. We enjoyed the guest lectures, the entertainers they brought on board as well as the father/daughter duo that sang in the lounge. We had 185 people on board but it seemed like even fewer than that given the outstanding service. We are already looking to book another cruise. Read Less

The itineraries and destinations were all places that I wanted to see. One of the highlights is actually one of the more simple things though- the scenic cruising days that we would spend on the sun deck sailing past castle after castle in the warm sunshine. Everyone that worked on the ship was amazing and had my name memorized which was awesome. I miss them very much! Don't get me started on the food. I was so spoilt! It was often difficult to choose from the options on the menu because they all sounded good. We loved the complimentary coffee/hot chocolate and cookie station. We often helped ourselves to a nice hot chocolate and cookie then would go back to the room and watch episode after episode of Downton Abbey on the very nice flatscreen tv's. Nicer than the tv in my house! As was the heated floor in the bathroom. I might have enjoyed myself too much. Made a lot of friends. Unforgettable trip. Read Less

In a word, Viking River Cruises on the Amterdam-Budapest route is awesome. Opportunities for pre-sail stopover and post-sailing stopover, and spending extra days in the port of embarkation and debarkation. Staff was fabulous. The included tours were by and large 4.7 out of 5.0; a couple fell short of expectation, but perhaps that is because the others were so excellent. Optional tours were educational, plentiful and entertaining. Port-to-land tour coordination was smooth. The ship's dining between the restaurant and the alternative lighter fare was ideal... all items available were prepared well, were reflective of the areas in which the longship cruised, and were well presented. Evening entertainment was fine. The glimses into area history and into the ship operations (and lock operation) were insightful. Reception staff and cabin staff were first-rate. It was interesting that Viking placed crew members with some tour groups... this permitting not only their being better able to interact with passengers by gaining more knowledge of area history and culture, but by permitting a social discourse between passengers and staff on a more personal level than server and served. Well done. Read Less

We are not into cruising but the concept of a river cruise where everyday you were in a different town with planned excursions appealed to me. I also did not have high expectations of the cruise itself thinking it would be like riding a Greyhound Bus because of all of Viking's advertising. The cruise blew me away. It was way beyond my expectations. Five stars are not enough to describe it. From the ship, to the crew, to meals, to the daily excursions..........all were well beyond first class. The ship was high tech and wonderfully appointed. The crew was genuine and sincere in it's treatment of all "explorers". The meals were five star, gourmet. The included and optional excursions had wonderful guides that provided a local perspective to the areas toured. I can not think of anyway to make the Viking Grand European Cruise any better. I would recommend Viking and the Grand European Cruise to all. It is worth every dollar it cost. Read Less

The Entertainment Director did an outstanding job of making sure the excursions and tours were on-time and interesting. We also appreciated the "open seating" policy that allowed us to meet different fellow travelers throughout the cruise. We found the food and drink delightful, and enjoyed the extra effort to relate it to the areas we were cruising though. If we had to do it over we would only change one aspect of the trip. Picked this particular cruise because Viking was well rated, the cruise visited several countries and I thought traveling the rivers/canals would be more interesting than touring by bus. Our flight was cancelled, but Viking was great at getting someone to meet us the nest day and take us to the ship. Ship was beautiful with a peaceful vibe. The cabin was easy to live in and housekeeping was excellent. Food was great with a lot of choices. As a picky eater I was fearful but should not have been. The only risk was eating too much. The port excursions were well organized and the tour guides were excellent. I really enjoyed the mix of type of excursions--small towns, larger cities, castles and churches. There was also enough free time to do some exploring on our own. There was live music in the lounge every night and the on-board talks and demos were very interesting, especially the one by the captain about his ship. Service was excellent and everyone was fluent in English. The staff truly tried to get to know us and adapted their style formal/informal to make us the most comfortable. The beauty of the rivers and canals was truly unforgettable. I'd take the trip again, but only after trying some other Viking river cruises. Read Less

All in all the Viking Cruise aboard the Gefjon was a good cruise. There was one hiccup which I talk about later. The ship was conveniently located for boarding in Amsterdam at the ship terminal. We had stayed at the Movenpick next door. We were enthusiastically greeted by the Program Director, Sam Corbin. Sam, a very exuberant young man, was a very capable and enjoyable Program Director for the trip. His excursions were well run and he was always pleasant no matter what happened. The on-board programs were entertaining. If you like medieval history and architecture with castles and cobblestones, you would like the cruise. We do. Be prepared though for some difficult walks. When Viking says the walk is “strenuous” – believe it. Don’t play macho with a “I-can-handle-anything” attitude! The ship itself was in very good condition. Everything was kept in a shiny and spotless manner. The crew across the board was attentive, good natured and eager to please the 183 passengers. The housekeeping staff kept the cabins clean. Just remember though, instead of asking for “wash clothes” ask for “face towels”. There were two dining areas – the main dining room (open seating) and the Aquavit Terrace. Both were very capably served by staff. The Terrace was a wonderful place to have breakfast and watch the world go by. The biggest drawback to the Terrace was the dinner entrees were on a one week rotation and only the entrée changed each night – other courses always remained the same. What you had on the first Monday was what you would get the next Monday and there was only one entrée offered. Over the years we have seen all cruise lines reduce the food quantities served and an emphasis on presentation – how does it look on the plate with drizzles and colors, etc. The food was average and, frankly, tended toward the bland side. Soups had little thickness – were very watery. I think Viking has overdone the portion control. Surf and turf with one-half of a small lobster tail and small four oz. piece of meat is carrying it a little far. The “fall back” steak if you didn’t like other alternatives was a, sometimes, inedible strip steak. We know people who sent them back. While we generally enjoyed the cruise, there was one very troubling aspect. We paid for a full balcony stateroom on the second deck with the intent of enjoying the scenery while sitting on the balcony (or at least with the door open) as we glided across Europe. The Viking company policy is that staterooms and balconies are non-smoking. A designated area is provided for smokers. Unfortunately, we non-smokers, ended up with at least one smoker next door and he sat on his balcony smoking. We were forced indoors with the balcony door closed. I spoke to customer service about this about the third day of the cruise. Their reply was they would check with housekeeping. We did not receive any feedback on the issue and the smoking continued through the end of the cruise. A Viking representative contacted me after the cruise after I had made a comment on one of their surveys with a “so sorry” attitude. If you are a non-smoker and are expecting a non-smoking environment, you should be prepared for that to not be the situation and act accordingly. My mistake was probably not being aggressive enough in the follow-up. So, would we do a river cruise again? Maybe. Would we do Viking again? That’s going to require some real consideration. It was good, but if they don’t live up to their own policies well………….. Read Less
