We chose this cruise because of the ports to explore along the various rivers. Amsterdam, Cologne, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Budapest were historically appealing for my husband and I. The excursions were very informative and comprehensive. We enjoyed on board entertainment especially the German glass blower. The meals were delicious and reflected the lands we were touring. The option of changing tables at each seating allowed us to meet many new friends. Service was outstanding from the cabin attendants, and waiters, to the cruise director, Joey. Due to water levels being extremely low, we had to transfer from the Scadi to the Bragi to continue our cruise. It was inconvenient to repack, but the crew including the captain handled everything and streamlined the process. We cruised to Vienna, but could not go on to Budapest due to the low water levels. The crew once again stepped up and diffused the situation. We boarded luxury buses and were driven to Budapest where we were lodged at the Ritz. Read Less

We had always wanted to do a European Riverboat Cruise. It was everything we had hoped for and more. The dining and entertainment was excellent, the crew and the wait staff were extremely friendly, courteous and professional. There were get togethers with the tour director every night in the lounge, showing us videos of the different ports of call and what we could expect to see and the shore excursions were well organized and really gave you an insight into what life was like in the different countries that we visited. Before the cruise even started, the airlines lost both of our bags of luggage. We can't say enough about how helpful the crew was in trying to get our luggage back. They spent an enormous amount of time with us, compiling lists of what articles of clothing we thought had been lost, filling out forms to submit to the airlines and making countless calls to the airlines in an attempt to find our luggage. We had purchased two days of clothing in Amsterdam, assuming we would get our luggage back soon and the cruise ship washed, dried and ironed our laundry every day for free until we got our first bag of luggage back, which wasn't until one week into the cruise. Hats off to all of them, they were fantastic. Between the magnificent scenery, the excursions, the local cuisine and the onboard experience, it was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable vacations we've ever had. We're already booked on another Viking Cruise in October of 2020 and we can't wait. For us, Viking lived up to the expectations and we would highly recommend it. Read Less

Since we were planning on this being our trip of a lifetime, we chose the best, Viking. Your reputation for excellence tipped the scale to you. We booked a year in advance taking out trip insurance to be safe. Well we almost needed it. My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma. With 25 brain tumors during the year we weren't sure we could go. However, she was cleared to take the trip the week before we left. Neither of us had been on a trip like this before, and had no idea how it would go. We found out it was quite challenging due to her health and mobility. However, we persevered with the help and support of our wonderful crew, passengers and local europeans. It was wonderful!!!!! We were amazed by the entire itinerary. Wonderful sights and people. Our crew and guides were excellent. So well organized and able to react to every obstacle thrown at them. The most amazing thing was how the crew and corporate were able to complete our trip after the actual cruise had to end after 11 days. The freighter that ran aground in the middle of the Danube really could have been a compete trip killer. However, you managed to find busses, restaurants, hotels and a last night dinner cruise in Budapest. All first class hotels and restaurants. We are firmly convinced no other cruise line could have pulled that off!!! We cannot say enough about your cruise line and our crew in of the Bragi in particular. From the stewards, waiters, bar tenders, chef, cruise director and staff were just wonderful. If we could we would want the same crew again!!! We are not sure if her health will allow it, but we would definitely cruise with you again. We tell every one we know that if you want a first class trip Viking is the way to go. Well worth any difference in price over the others. Thanks again for our Trip of a Lifetime!!! Read Less

We enjoyed the different ports of call each day and the excursions. All of the excursions were conducted in English and very informative. In addition we signed up for additional excursions that were also very nice the transportation at each port was conducted with top notch transportation busses and we were very impressed we have been on several cruises on different cruise lines. The Viking river cruise boats were very nice and clean. We would definitely use Viking cruise line again. We met lots of people from all over and everyone was very nice. The entire crew were by far the nicest group of people and they made us feel very welcome and comfortable. We can’t think of anything that was a negative during the cruise. Read Less

After a fabulous river cruise last year with Viking, we had high hopes, especially the Danube and Vienna. Half-way into the cruise, after going through dozens of locks in Germany with the sundeck closed and boring shore excursions, we were told a barge had blocked the Danube just before Passau. We docked Next to a sheep pasture and lock Sun. to Wed. Several key excursions were cancelled. Other ships moved passengers around the blockage but not the Bragi. All the passengers had to leave the ship and bus to Budapest. The top deck & the lower deck passengers were separated, sticking 2/3s of us in an airport hotel far from Vienna. Two days there became 1/2. Meals were in bad restaurants. Worst, Vikings’ story about what happened was contradicted by what we saw when we got to Budapest. Somehow the Bragi found another load of passengers to bring to Budapest. Read Less

River cruising is a relaxing and interesting way to travel. There is much more focus on experiencing the local environment, culture and history than on Ocean Cruises. Viking did an excellent job of organizing tours, coordinating transport and and enabling us to get the most out of our brief visits to towns and cities along the Rhine and Danube. The staff was excellent, proficient and friendly. The Program Director "Joey" was excellent and made even the inconvenient times bearable. Due to an accident blocking traffic on the Danube we had to complete our cruise by bus, which is no ones idea of a great way to travel. However, Viking went a above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of and completed our journey. Joey and Sandra, Viking Staff, stayed with on the buses and in the hotels and did everything in their power to make sure we had an enjoyable experience. Their professionalism, friendliness and enthusiasm kept us all together and made up for the disruption and inconvenience. The food and accommodations aboard the Bragi were excellent. The ship was clean and all services were provided professionally. A word to those considering River Cruising. There is a limited number of things to keep you entertained aboard the boat. Much of the value of the trip is in the side trips and tours of the towns and cities. If you cannot comfortably walk for at least two hours, these side trips will not be practical. For much of the trip the upper deck of the boat is closed so that if you elect to stay on the boat you will be confined to your stateroom or the small public lounge on the ship. It is not always practical to take your own side trip as the boat often drops tours off and picks them up at a different docking place. To those who have committed to a River Cruise, please think seriously about the convenience of the local population and other passengers as you walk around in your large tour groups. Don't block traffic, don't block the entrance to businesses, be considerate of locals trying to get about their daily business. And be considerate of other passengers. Pushing to get first in line, asking long and irrelevant questions, monopolizing the guide's time and attention, asking for breaks because you're unable to keep up, all make the tour unpleasant for others. Not knowing what exactly to expect we only took part in the included tours, they gave us pleanty of time to explore on our own. We really liked the schedules allowing us time to explore the ports on our own. we fount the food to wonderful, nice choices from contentnal breakfast, full breakfast bar, lunches on the deck were an added pleasure. Dinners were well done, the options (local fare and specialitydishes) were well done, made us remember the times we were statiioned ini Germany. All in all, it was the best vacation we have ever had. We absolutely loved this trip! The service was excellent and the cabin with our private balcony was perfect for early morning riverside views. We truly enjoyed our extra nights in Amsterdam and highly recommend extended stay at the beginning of the cruise to help overcome jet lag. Amsterdam is a great walkable city...just watch out for the bikes! We enjoyed all of our excursions and the guides provided so much history and insight. We particularly enjoyed the smaller riverside towns and the Franconian Countryside tour more than the bigger cities like Vienna. The speakers they brought onboard were educational and funny. We had just enough choices for meals and dining variety. The Program Director was fantastic! She seemed to be everywhere making sure we all had a great time. We met some great people we will keep in touch with in the future too. Overall a great experience! We would take another river cruise based on this successful one! Read Less

We traveled with a group of 12 friends and planned it a year in advance. We had a lower cabin that only had a window across the top. We spent little time in the room, so it was fine. The food was great, offering local selections as well as tne usual chicken, steak, etc. I usually ate the Local choice and was never disappointed. Deserts were always great. Our cruise director was Chantal and she was fantastic, always waiting to meet your needs. Ports of call were all good as well as a river narration as we traveled down the Rhine and Danubes. Local walking tours had great local guides. Sometimes there wasn't much shopping time, but that was okay because some cities you had plenty of free time. It was our first river cruise and the 14 days seemed a bit long. It was a great way to see cities close up so now we know where we might like to go back. Read Less

The room was always clean and linen continually changed. We made new friends and wonderful memories. We had a few extra activities on shore which were great fun. The Vienna Strauss concert was particularly good. We also did a winery tour which was very enjoyable. People cruising with us were easy to get along with and so friends were plentiful during the cruise. The food was also great. A different main menu each night with lots of choice from breakfast to dinner. We would recommend this cruise along the Rhine and Danube rivers to everyone. We had such an incredible experience with Viking on our previous river cruise (from St. Petersburg to Moscow) that we felt that the only way to see so much of Europe would be on board a Viking ship again. We were NOT disappointed! From the moment we stepped off the airplane we began to relax because we were met by Viking staff who began taking care of everything. Viking always provides such a wealth of information pertaining to our journey and each specific stop the ship makes. They do what I used to do for our family, so it feels very good to have someone do it for us now:) Even in the face of the strike at the locks, which put us behind in our schedule, Viking did a stellar job still getting us to where we needed to be and demonstrating such flexibility in their programs. We continue to be impressed by such professionalism! The food was ALWAYS five star. Having more intimate dining options, at no extra charge, even on such a small boat, was a bonus. We loved the fact that wine and beer are served at no extra charge at meal times... and not just any wine or beer, they have many local selections. We had one of the "cheap" cabins, but even they have a window to look out! The maid service was always done impeccably. We found that we spent more time, depending on the weather, either outside at a comfortable table and chairs or in the lounge with lovely comfortable furniture. They did a great job of arranging the furniture so that we felt that we could still have privacy, even though there were many other people there. We had live entertainment every night. It was lovely and relaxing. Viking also had a glass blower brought on board and also some specialty cooking demonstrations. Dinner was even entertaining at times when they were celebrating a particular region's food. Viking does an outstanding job in all aspects! The freedom and time we had in each city was great. If the boat was not docked within easy walking distance, then Viking provided excellent transportation to and from the city. Viking may look like it is more expensive than other cruises, but because everything is paid up front, rather than nickel and diming you on board, we think it is a GREAT value for the money. We enjoyed ourselves so much on this cruise that we are already booked for another this year! Can't wait! Read Less

This is a terrific way to see some of the highlights of Europe that are often missed with bus and other land-based trips. It was wonderful to get to know the crew as well as our shipmates. The stops were excellent, as was the format for visiting each town. My wife and I liked the brief orientation tour with the remainder of the day "at leisure." We have taken many ocean cruises in the past and were impressed with the quality of the Viking river cruise. The food was excellent, and we did take advantage of the free beverages that accompanied the meals. Very nice. I also celebrated my 65th birthday on the trip, and the crew made it very memorable. Would I travel Viking River Cruises again? Absolutely! We had a terrific time and at a very good price. We took advantage of the two-for-one deal as well as complimentary airline flights. We chose an inexpensive room as well but had a royal adventure despite the smallish rooms. But who really worried about the small rooms and not-so-great window views? We spent next to no time in our room other than sleeping. I have been to Europe at least 14 times, and this is was among the most memorable trip. Our 23-day "Grand European" honeymoon trip was the only thing that topped it! We plan on taking a Viking River Cruise to China during 2020. Read Less

The meals were all very good with a good selection of wines and beers to go with the meals. The entertainment was of a cozy dinner theater nature. We enjoyed it very much. We mostly went on the free excursions and enjoyed them very much. Excellent walking tours. We especially enjoyed Budapest at the end of our trip. We stayed at a very nice hotel in he castle district. We chose the The Grand European Tour with Viking because we liked the itinerary and heard some very favorable reviews about the Viking River Cruise Line in general. Our flights worked out well (except for a few seat & schedule changes), and the pre cruise 2 night stay at the Movenpic Hotel in Amsterdam was fine. We had a standard stateroom #115 which was small but well appointed and our stateroom attendant was excellent. A lot of our friends in our group ( 16 all together ) had either veranda or balcony staterooms and the only complaint we heard was about the size and some occasional noise. The ship itself seemed okay, perhaps a little tired, and the staff was generally helpful. The cruise director (Kane) who kept everybody informed of the daily activities, was very good and quite entertaining. The dining experience on the BRAGI was AWFUL. Breakfast & lunch were okay, but dinner was really disappointing. The quality of the food was poor, very often tasteless, sometimes unedible, and the service was no better. Dinner was at 7:00 p.m., and we usually received our main course around 9:00 p.m. very often being served cold, and the orders were frequently served incorrectly. And to make matters worse, the servers we had in the dining room seemed rather indifferent. On other cruises, if you didn't finish your dinner (which was most of the time on the BRAGI) the servers would always ask: was something wrong with your dinner ? is there something else we can get you ? But, not on the BRAGI, they would take your full plates away and very often say nothing. In fact dinner was so mediocre that some of us would consume extra bread and ice cream to make up for what you couldn't eat at dinner. And if you enjoy coffee or tea, do not sail with the BRAGI, one coffee / tea station was always broken and the other usually in a state of disrepair. The itinerary was very good ( although we did have some delays and missed one stop due to high river heights on the Danube ) and we did enjoy all of the ports. As far as the tours arranged through Viking, some were very good, and sometimes if the tour was rather dull we would break away from the group and explore on our own. What made any of the tours either enjoyable or painful, was the personality & communication skills of the tour guide. Anyway, I guess we had high expectations with Viking River Cruises and besides the interesting ports, the overall experience with the Viking BRAGI was just average and in many cases disappointing. To sum it up, we were with a group of 16 seasoned travelers and not one of them would consider trying a River Cruise with Viking ever again. Read Less

We were drawn to look into the idea of a cruise from the PBS television ads. Cruise director was wonderful. We were forced to deal with the problem of low water mid-cruise and had to change from the Viking Skadi to the Viking Bragi. The cruise director from the Bragi began with us on the Skadi from Amsterdam so there was continuity throughout. All the details were handled extremely well with little discomfort to the passengers. I felt some of the on board entertainment was weak, especially the Danube/Vienna music trio, but entertaining, none-the-less. The classical music performance in Vienna was very good and entertaining. The History/culture lectures on board were very good and helpful. Tour excursion guides were very good, for the most part. All in all it was a wonderful experience for my wife and me celebrating 30 years of marriage and several other special events in our lives. Thanks for the memories! Read Less

The price was right given the level of cruise and service we were seeking. I did a LOT of research, both internet shopping and talking to friends who have river-cruised with Viking) and Viking was our choice. Virtually everything we needed and wanted was included in the price of the cruise. That fact made the cruise a lot more pleasant as there is no joy in being "nickle-dimed" to death to use a local idiom. The level of personal service aboard the Bragi was first-rate and virtually every crew member we came into contact with was attentive, helpful and eager to please. Particularly enjoyed the meal service personnel who knew our wishes by the second or third day on the ship. While the food choices were not exceptional nor particularly gourmet, the menu was adequate and the food for the most part very good. The choice of regional cuisine offered for dinner and sometimes at lunch, was a nice touch. It would have been nice to occasionally see pickled herring as a breakfast offering. However, this is not a deal breaker; It is rather, my personal preference. Cruise director (unfortunately I cannot remember his name as I am rather bad at remembering names) was just exceptional in every way. Shore excursions were quite good and the enrichment lectures and activities were also well chosen. I missed the opportunity to work-out in a fitness room, but understand the constraints of what you can and cannot build into a ship of finite size. Overall, very enjoyable cruise and I would recommend Viking to anyone who asked. Read Less

This was a special two week celebration cruise for us for which we paid as a couple over £12,000. There was a mix of English speaking 'guests', as we were called. Although I'd particularly asked for a cruise with a majority of British clients, of the 186 'guests' most were American. There were a few British and an Australian couple and a New Zealand couple. The food was good and plentiful and in the main reflected the cuisine of the areas we travelled through, ie The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, so it was strange to have some American favourites such as clam chowder! The staff were very friendly, helpful and good. The organised tours were managed very well in the main with some excellent guides and some not so knowledgeable. We loved the medieval German villages, particularly Rothenburg, Bamburg and the dynamic Regensburg. However, although our suite was lovely with a balcony, it was often impossible to use or enjoy it. When we were docked in Cologne for the day and for the 2 days in Vienna and two days in Budapest it was unusable as we were sandwiched between two other Viking Boats. This also meant that because there was no daylight into either rooms of the suite, we had to have the electric lights on continuously and, therefore, we then had to have our curtains closed completely during daylight hours to give us privacy as obviously the boat parked directly alongside could view straight into our rooms. Having experienced being moored beside another boat in Cologne all day, when we arrived in Vienna for two days and were straight away sandwiched between two boats, I asked for how long this was going to be the case. I was told this would be for the entire time we were in Vienna. I was not happy and suggested this was a economy for Viking which was not what we had paid for. I was told it was not an economy as Viking owned two other moorings at Vienna but had rented them out!!! Obviously Viking benefitted from this but we did not. Also noticed when we were parked between other boats in this way, particularly in the public areas, that there was a smell of sewage, which was not pleasant. To add to this the sun deck was closed for 5 days during the first week of the cruise. I understand that this is because of the low bridges. However for those guests without balconies there was very limited if any outside space in which to enjoy the early part of the cruise, during which there was mostly cruising and very few stops at ports. I also noted, as did other guests, that the necessary closure of the sun deck was not reflected in Viking's brochures or other documents. Read Less

Always wanted to take this cruise. The ship Bragi was spotlessly clean. The service was simply outstanding by all the crew members and the food (all 3 meals per day) was high quality gourmet. There were multiple choices on the menu for each meal. Hard to believe Viking delivers such high quality food 3x/day for 15 days... much better than the restaurants we dined at in several villages/towns/cities we visited during the cruise. Also, a variety of European beers and wines were served with lunch and dinner and there was champaign available at breakfast... all complimentary. Included excursions were well organized. One of the nice parts of the excursions was the daily walking tours conducted by professionals. We chose this cruise because we wanted to meet people from different parts of the world. The itinerary suited us as we stayed beforehand in Amsterdam and after in Budapest under our own arrangements. We used the flight value to upgrade and we enjoyed really good connections. Our cabin was a french balcony, yes it was small but we were hardly in there. The ship is so large to have plenty of comfortable lounge room seating without being crowded. The food was excellent quality and plenty of variety, we enjoyed a drinks package so we had a choice of wines. The main bar manager knew us so well after a few days, we hardly had to ask for drinks. The waiting staff were brilliant food getting to know you and your likes. The front office staff were also excellent, nothing was too much trouble. The on shore excursions were well planned and excellent local guides, they had various groups according to ability too so no one missed out and walked comfortably. we enjoyed on board music and lectures too so all tastes were covered. The entertainment was really good and Maryann our tour director was amazing. Her evening briefings became almost compulsory as no one wanted to miss out on the fun and her jokes. She even sang a whole night for us, great fun. The quizzes were hilarious too. Viking went out of their way to ensure you had a good time and well looked after. A couple whose luggage did not arrive enjoyed free laundry service for almost 10 days. Another time, a whole laundry bill was deleted after a chewing gum stuck on trousers! This was our second Viking River Cruise. Service was up to Viking's high standards. Meals were good. Entertainment/Tour Director Mary Anne was fantastic and a real character. The tours at each port were usually very good with knowledgeable guides and interesting sites. Kinderdijk, Melk Abbey, Bamberg, Vienna, Marksburg castle, and the Budapest night cruise up and down the river were highlights. Each small town had its own ambience and feel. Tour radios worked better this time as bugs had been worked out compared to our last cruise when they were new. Cruise was more on the relaxing side as this 15 day cruise had a lot of water to cover, i.e. more cruising than a shorter trip. Ship typically went up river while we were bused to tour sites and back to ship. We did not have any river problems with water levels or lock problems and there were about 70 of them! Ship was in excellent condition. Only ship issue we had was upper deck was closed most of the time due to all of the low bridges. Entertainment (lounge singers) was average in my opinion. Embarkation had a small issue as dock was changed in Amsterdam. We walked to the dock Viking said we would use prior to leaving home and it had been moved from dock closest to train station (10 minute walk) to one farthest away (30 minutes). Train stop was nearby but we were unaware of that. This was not Viking's fault. I recommend staying in Amsterdam 2-3 days before or after your cruise. Viking does only a short bus tour and more time is needed for this interesting city. Read Less

My closest friend and his wife signed up for the cruise and recommended it to us as they had sailed on two previous Viking river cruises and enjoyed them very much. I especially liked the fact that, if I had to return to my cabin, it was always no more than a minute away instead of 10-15 minutes. The smaller ship size and number of passengers made for a more personal, intimate traveling experience. What impressed me the most (and, from the talk heard in the dining room and on the excursions, it would seem, all of the rest of the passengers) was the tremendous effort, energy, and--above all--enthusiasm that the cruise "Activities Coordinator" (I am not sure of his exact title) demonstrated day after day in carrying out the duties of his position. While I cannot recall his full name at present, I do recall that he was of British extraction and that his first name was Kean (Kane? Caine?). While my wife and I and the other three couples we traveled with on this cruise all enjoyed the excursions, meals, entertainment, and service experienced on this Viking tour, we all agreed that, more than any other single factor, the "Activities Coordinator" or "Cruise Director" was the most important factor in making the "Tulips and Windmills" cruise a memorable one, indeed. This was our first viking river cruise, but we hope it not to be our last! What a wonderful trip, my husband is a bilateral amputee, so the size of the ship and ease of the tours was just perfect for us. On a regular cruise ship it would take 30 to 60 minutes to get off the ship from our stateroom, (at least for us), but it took us 10 minutes to get from out stateroom and on the tour bus that was parked right outside the ships' dock. We loved having included tours as well as optional tours. The staff was so wonderful, and food was fabulous. We were in the minority of first time cruisers, which we certainly could understand after the trip was over. We are also looking into an ocean cruise to explore as well. Keep up the great job Viking! Also, I love Amsterdam and this tour gave us a day and a half in the beginning and a day and a half in the end. We were able to tour the town on our own and visit the Anne Frank House without pre-purchasing our tickets. The tour director was fantastic and made sure that everything was done as it should. The Home-Hosted Visit in Hoorn was interesting as you really got a flavor of the people. I have cruised with Viking before and the service was beyond wonderful. The cabins were nicely decorated and relaxing and having a balcony was an added bonus. I know you don't spend much time in the room but when you do, you want to relax. It is also a nice cruise line because you do not find children on board which can put a kink in traveling. Read Less

I found that two people we had connected with on our cruise in 2015 were going on this cruise and even though we were put on the wait list we got a call that there was a cabin available. We were able to sign up for it and the bonus was we had a balcony. This itinerary was perfect because it gave us two days in Amsterdam a city I was wanting to spend more time in. As we arrived at the ship, we were surprised to hear the voice of Maryanne, the tour director of our first cruise. She was so much fun and organized. The cities we visited were beautiful and interesting. On one tour, we were able to have coffee and treats with an inhabitant of the city. I would have to say this was the highlight of the trip. Also the garden in Amsterdam was so pretty with all the flowers in bloom. Read Less
