We had never been on a River Cruise, but had a great experience on a Viking Ocean Cruise last year, and did the Amsterdam To Budapest Cruise with two extra days in Amsterdam—booked on our own. The crew was wonderful: very attentive and helpful. Our veranda stateroom was okay, but without anywhere to sit, other than the bed or on the single chair provided, it was simply not a good place for us to “hang out.” We wound up spending a lot of our down time in the Lounge, because our veranda was basically off limits almost 2/3 of the cruise due to rain, or, more annoyingly, being tied up next to another ship that obscured our view. After all, who wants to sit on a veranda where your view is into a stateroom of the ship next to you. The food was very good, but again didn’t compare well to the myriad offerings on the Ocean Cruise. The biggest disappointment was the unavailability of any place to exercise, other than the Sky Deck, which was closed for five days while we transited locks and bridges. Fortunately, the wonderful cities on the itinerary showed themselves well. We loved Cologne, Vienna, Bambërg, and Budapest. Our excursion to Salzburg was glorious. All in all a fine trip, but I’m not sure we are cut out for River Cruising. Perhaps a shorter trip would have been better for us, as we are still very fit and active travelers. Read Less

This was our very first River Boat Cruise. We have done many Ocean cruises and this is much slower, much more relaxing and much more intimate. The crew gets to know you by name and so do a lot of the other passengers. Service is excellent and personal and the prices are much lower than on the ocean cruises. We have a free walking type of excursion each and every day to explore the new location and this was great! Entertainment is limited as there is only room for the same performers for most of the trip. There is some stops where locals are brought on board and that was nice for a change. It is quick and easy to embark and disembark - this was a nice feature. No big lineups. The cruise director was excellent and even helped us set up our own customized side trip. We ended up changing ships due to the water level being too high at part of the River, and the Viking group made it simple and as easy as possible. I found that once I let myself slow down to relax the slower pace of this cruise that I did really enjoy the trip. And it was so nice to explore Countries and Ports that I have never been to. So yes, I would definitely go again. Read Less

There are tons and tons of Stunning amazing history facts and so on. I also enjoyed being with small group and mingle with others. It was Really very nice. I had One big disappointment that you won’t provide interpreting services at all. If they have that, for sure I ll tell other Deaf people to go on Viking cruises. Hearing people and I ( Deaf person) paid the same price. Yet, they had greatly accessibility to listen to port talk announcement and so on. I can’t hear at all. All the crews were great. They deserve to be recognized. Please feel free to contact me and I d be happy to explain more. I hope to cruise with you again and I will appreciate huge discount. Thank you! Read Less

We chose this trip for location itinerary price timing Great places visited Great education, daily classes with Stefan which prepared us for following excursion. Super cruise director. Stefan A little disappointment due to water level, forcing ship change. True disappointment, no medical on ship. Wow, hard to believe with the age oft he clientele We really enjoyed the local guides on every excursion. The glass blowing exhibit was great, although we have not received our purchases as of August 30, 5 weeks post disembarkment. The vocal and instrumental entertainment was not very good. We did enjoy the games we played in the evening. Our servers in the dining room tried very hard to learn some signing because we had 5 Deaf people in our group. Great job. We were extremely disappointed that Viking made no effort to supply interpreters for our Deaf companions. In the USA, due to the ADA act, interpreters are supplied when needed. Since no interpreters were supplied my wife, I and our other hearing companion were forced to interpret constantly missing many items throughout the trip. Read Less

We chose this cruise from Budapest to Bucharest because we wanted to visit European countries that we had not visited before. It was FANTASTIC--a MUST DO! We are world travelers and could not have asked for better. We started with the pre-extension which was Prague and we were glad we arrived 2 days before the start date. There was so much to see and do, and it was easy to get around on our own. So we took advantage of seeing things that would not be included in the Viking package. But once we started the package, we were extremely pleased with what we got to see and do. The Palace, lunch, and private chamber concert were so much better than anything we saw that was offered through other tour agencies. And we were very pleased with the World War II tour. The guides for both were outstanding. We were then bussed to Budapest, Hungary traveling through Slovakia. After late afternoon and morning tours, we boarded our ship, the Viking Aegir. Embarkation was smooth and easy. The ship felt like home after watching the videos that Viking had provided; our cabin was perfect. The staff, room steward, waiters, chefs, entertainers, Hotel Manager, Nautical Officer, and Captain were very accommodating and personable, seeing to our every need. But special accolades go to the Program Director, Stefan. He made the cruise special, sharing his life experiences growing up in Croatia and what life was like in the countries we visited. And we would see him each day as he made himself available on the various shore excursions, and we enjoyed his "talks" each night about what we would see the next day. We loved the shore excursions, seeing life as it is today and learning the hardships the people lived through during and after the War as we visited Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. We saw and visited large and small towns, not just the "tourist" places. We saw ancient ruins and modern buildings, we watched Hungarian horsemen and tasted a wide-variety of paprika, we enjoyed a beautiful day on the Danube going through the Iron Gates, and completed our trip in Bucharest. The staff made it so easy each day to leave the ship for shore excursions; giving us port information, water and umbrellas if needed, etc. And each day we returned we were met with warm towels and often a welcoming drink. We learned quickly to take the port information with us when one day a couple went off on their own and "missed the boat." The information allowed them to contact the ship and the couple took a taxi to a location on the river where the boat was able to pick them up. The food was amazing with something for everyone. And, as usual, we ate more than we should have and enjoyed every bite. We celebrated our 48th Wedding Anniversary onboard. We selected "friends" we had met onboard to sit with us, and the staff helped us celebrate with a wonderful meal, and singing to us as they presented us with a fabulous dessert. There were always activities on board; but sometimes we just enjoyed quiet time in our cabin taking a nap. And the top deck--sun-deck--was a wonderful quiet place in the afternoon and evening and especially the day cruising through the Iron Gates. Disembarkation was very easy and efficient. The hotels on both ends of the cruise were top-rated and were close to things to see and do. Would we do it again! Yes, we would love to spend more time on different shore excursions -- but this was our second Viking Cruise, the first being China. Viking has so many interesting cruises, we would more than likely do a different cruise before we would take this one again. **A special hint: We joined the Viking trip after completing a previous tour of 10 days in Russia. So, we had our laundry done at the hotel in Prague. We found out that it would have been half the price if we had waited to have it doneon the ship. Read Less

We had been looking forward to the Grand European Tour from Amsterdam to Budapest on Viking. The itinerary was perfect for our interest. It was a miserable experience. We arrived early morning in Amsterdam and were not given a room until 5:00 pm. Viking should have had some activities planned upon arrival along with an introduction to Amsterdam (location of ATM, bank, transportation logistics). I got sick after 10 days because of no hygiene procedures on ship. The only hand sanitizer was by the main dining room. NO sanitizer upon entry, other dining room, into lounge or any other care for guests. Viking did not show any concern for over half of the ship being ill. They were non apologetic for my concerns on my return home and very arrogant in customer relations. I was very surprised at the total lack of customer concern and will never cruise with them again and not recommend Viking line. We were also expected to pay gratuities for a $9000+ Per person cruise. Yes I expect to pay gratuities for a lower price cruise but not for one in this price category. Also had to pay for laundry as no laundry facilities in board. Read Less

From May 25 – Jun 8, 2018, my wife and I went on a Viking River Cruise: The Grand European Tour on the ship Viking Aegir. It started out in The Netherlands, and traversed through Germany, Austria, and Hungary. I have deliberately waited about two weeks before summarizing the trip for anyone who might be thinking of taking a similar cruise. Rather than write in prose, I decided to put forth the cons and pros of the trip. If you do not care to read this listing of cons and pros, let me simply summarize by noting that the Viking River Cruise advertisements and brochures naturally only paint the brightest of pictures; and, in all likelihood, deliberately hide much of the reality. Cons - I believe the ship was responsible for getting people sick, especially when fresh air was denied to guests during the “lock” downs of the upper deck. We were sick for one-half of the trip, with sore throats, non-stop coughing, and nasal congestion. - There was no recognition or acknowledgment from the ship’s staff, especially the program director who spoke to all the passengers each day, of the rampant viral infection circulating among the guests. Approximately one-half of the boat was sick with this infection. A simple acknowledgment would have gone a long way, as well as a reminder for people to sanitize their hands often. - There was never any mention before the trip that the ship would be going through 69 different locks (canals) on the rivers. Due to low bridge clearance at these locks, the upper outdoor deck was closed for 5 straight days. This limited the amount of fresh air for the guests and very likely contributed to the viral infection that plagued half of the ship’s guests and crew! We were “sardined” in the lounge area instead of enjoying the fresh air of the outdoors. We did notice that other Viking ships had their upper decks available. These were exactly the same ships. - The Viking commercials show you a beautiful ship docked next to a magnificent castle or church…beautiful sights and scenery. As a result, we booked a “veranda suite” room with an outdoor balcony/veranda. What they failed to mention is that your boat is but only 1 of 4 other Viking boats visiting the same ports at the same time!! We would wake up, open the curtain to our veranda and be, literally, a few inches away from another Viking ship. What a rip-off! These other ships offered the same excursions at the same time as our ship, making it that much more crowded everywhere we went. Again, it is not what was in their advertising. - There was not enough free time for many of the shore excursions to explore a city on your own. This was especially true in Salzburg. We had about 1.25 hours between the end of the guided tour and lunch….and then only 20 minutes after lunch. It would have been much better if the free time was all clumped together. - The lunch banquet in Salzburg was extremely rushed and very crowded! There was no salad or appetizer course and no coffee after lunch was served. The waiters were practically running to get the food on and off the tables. - Before we arrived in Vienna, Austria, we were informed the night before by the ship’s program director of the many wonderful Austrian coffee houses that we could visit; however, there was no time available to enjoy a coffee house, due to the precious little time available to explore Vienna on your own. - When the upper deck was opened, there were no umbrellas put up for shade. We had to use the rain umbrellas provided by the ship. Yet, other Viking ships that we saw had their crew put up umbrellas on the upper deck. - In the Aquavit Terrace, one of the canopies (the middle one) that would provide shade could not open and was never fixed for the entirety of our 14-day trip. - The advertisements and brochures claim that you could enjoy dinner on the Aquavit Terrace; however, what they do not tell you is that, there are only 6 tables set for dinner and that you need to secure those tables by 5:30p for a 7:15p dinner serving. In short, it was first-come, first-serve only. We never got the chance to eat dinner on this terrace. - Not a big deal, but the wi-fi on the ship was much to be desired. Not a Pro or a Con, but just a fact. - The average age of the people on our Viking River Cruise (Grand European Tour) was about 75+: We are in our late 50’s. - When we went out to the local pharmacy to buy drugs for our sickness, we met the ship’s hotel manager, who was buying drugs for the sick crew-members. Pros - The cities, sites, and scenery are beautiful and magnificent. We visited many cities that we would not have ever thought to visit on a vacation. It was truly breathtaking. - The staff provided very good service and were always willing to help. - The “veranda suite” room that we had was terrific. It had a separate living room/lounge and a balcony/veranda. The latter offered stunning views, when not docked a few inches from another Viking ship, which, unfortunately, was too often. - Early in the trip, our shower overflowed into the bedroom. The staff was excellent in drying out the rug and made extra certain that all was okay. They even left us a bottle of champagne and chocolates for our troubles. Again, excellent customer service. - The musical program during the banquet lunch in Salzburg was very entertaining. - The tour guides for both the included and “extra” excursions were very good. They knew so much of the history of the cities, sites, etc. We learned a lot. - The breakfast and lunch on board the ship was excellent. The dinner was good, although we expected better. The chef cooked local cuisine, depending on the city we had recently visited. We enjoyed tasting foods from different countries. - The cleaning staff did a wonderful job cleaning our room and doing the laundry. They were very thorough and did an excellent job. - The transfers to/from the airport and ship were extremely smooth. The drivers were waiting for you as you located your luggage. Plus, we had a private car to ourselves upon arriving from the U.S. to take us to the ship. - We met some of the nicest people on board the ship. Everyone was extremely friendly. Read Less

The airport transfers, transfers to the ship, and transfers to hotels were convenient and easy to follow. The included and extra excursions were fascinating, enjoyable ,and historic. Vienna and Budapest far exceeded our expectations. The food and variety was excellent and the portion sizes were good. If someone wanted more than the entrée, the wait staff was very accommodating. Service was excellent and our server, Orlando, was truly outstanding. We did do the extra days in Amsterdam and Budapest and we were glad we did. The extra excursions and time off the ship prior to and after the cruise allowed us to relax and not feel rushed to begin the cruise. One of the most enjoyable parts to the cruise was that our room went with us and we didn't need to pack any clothes for 14 days. Read Less

We chose Viking because of the constant advertizing. We did check out where Viking stands as regards pricing and found it to be above the average price. But we found the price commensurate with the quality. We could not have been more happy with our experience. Viking personnel were everywhere they were needed, at our arrival and departure hotels, at all connections where we could have possibly gotten lost or confused, at the shore excursions. They took great care, and were always cheerful. We've never seem such attention to detail, presentation, cleanliness and genuine cheerfulness. We never experienced any Viking personnel who did not stop what they were doing, look us in the eye, pause, and give us 100% of their attention! Of course, we expected great food and presentation. We were not disappointed. We had three choices of appetizer, main course and deserts. The food was prepared well, very tasty, and presented very attractively. The cabin was exactly as pictured in the online videos. Everything worked, too! Our cabin steward, Desi, was efficient and friendly. She always had our best interests at heart. We never had to worry about having water, clean towels or toiletries, nor the rooms' cleanliness. We particularly liked the twin beds. Although we did not separate them, we liked the fact that when one of us moved or tossed at night, we did not bother the others' sleep. Shore excursions were super, and informative. Of course, the free time could have been longer. But, that comes with the territory, what with seeing all the ports on our cruise. We got so much history that our heads were spinning. But, we did, at least learn of the sites' past, and where to spend our free time. Sonya, our tour director, was superlative!!! She was all things, to all people, at all times. Gave daily briefings, without notes. They were about next days' activity and the history of the area we were going through, or the area for the next day. We had several itinerary changes, but she handled them with accomplished skill. And she never seemed to get frazzled. We got to spend about an hour on the sun deck with the captain. He is a super guy. He told us details of the water situation, which was in question at the time. Again, like all Viking personnel, he acted like we were his sole concern, answering our questions about the ship, the locks, etc. The waitstaff got to know us and our preferences, and, some even learned our names. They were trained and skillful at their jobs, acting like they were working at a restaurant and seeking great tips. We took the opportunity to extend our stay, both before and after. Viking provided a tour in both Amsterdam and Budapest. Both were absolutely great. We got to learn some of the history of both cities, how to navigate the public transportation systems, where to eat and shop. Of course, we got to see many of the highlights of the cities. We would recommend both if finances allow. These tours definitely made our free time more enjoyable, since we knew how to get around, where to eat and drink, as well as find other sites that we wanted to see. Viking River Cruises is not a big ocean cruise ship. Don't expect big Broadway productions. The entertainment was great, with Vency playing on the piano in the afternoons and evenings, in the lounge. We had many enrichment talks on the areas we were going through, from local people. Again, we found them beneficial and very interesting. What can we say about embarkation and disembarkation? From the time that we arrived, we never had to worry about our bags. We were met in Amsterdam by two Viking personnel and escorted to awaiting buses for the journey to the hotel. Our bags were fully handled for us. Disembarkation was very impressive. The different groups of folk, according to their departure times were given different colored luggage tags and specific times to put luggage in the hallway. Each group was taken, separately, to their hotel or airport terminal. Viking has this down to a science. Details: an awning on the gangway at Budapest; silverware impeccably placed; sincere personnel; cabin cleanliness; water and umbrellas for shore excursions; a treat for when we returned from shore excursions, such as a non-alcohol drink, pastries or candies; staff exceeded our expectations; "gentle walking" shore excursions available for the physically limited; walls and public areas washed daily. Viking is now our river cruise company! We will never cruise a river with any other line. Read Less

Chose the Grand European River Cruise aboard the Viking Aegir from high recommendations from various friends. The ship was lovely, we had a French balcony which was just fine as we spen most of our time either uptop or in the main lounge.m staff were helpful, excellent and attentive service, friendly staff and great food and drink. The only complaint I have is that I am Celiac and as there was myself and 5 other Celiacs aboard, you would think they would have been prepared for us. Since we were aboard for a lengthy cruise, ice cream for dessert got boring. Every time they had special recipes cooked from the area we were in, the Celiacs got NOTHING! On the special farewell dinner, they had pretzels, tons of beer and approx 25 different desserts. Again NOTHING for Celiacs! That was very upsetting to me. Also no gluten free beer, even tho we were told they had 51 varieties! This company brags about being able to handle special diets, however, they were not very accommodating to me. Luckily every port had wonderful selections of cookies and snacks that I found to buy for myself I was disappointed that Viking had not seen fit to do this for the 6 people who paid top dollar. My trip was approx seven thousand dollars and they were notified about the special dietary needs almost a yr ahead- lots of time to prepare! Otherwise, it was a great trip. Read Less

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience aboard the Viking ship Aegir. All details of the cruise were efficiently organized and executed, including the pre and post (Amsterdam and Budapest) stays.. Staff was very attentive and generally knowledgeable of all aspects of the cruise and tours. If they did not know they quickly found the requested information and updated us. The tours were well thought out and informative. Generally historical in nature with a smattering of "newness", and educational. We have taken 5 cruises and this was by far the best; it was a valuable experience. Our experience was first class all the way. Definitely will take another cruise with Viking. The ships travel and docking was quiet and smooth; many times not even realizing we had departed from the docks. Enjoyed the travel through the locks reaching an elevation from sea level to over 1300 feet - Rhine River to Main River back down to the Danube, and crossing the continental divide in Europe. Basically, we chose this cruise because we liked the itinerary and we had heard great things about Viking. They know how to do luxury! Not only was the cruise terrific but the weather was also. Warm and sunny! So many cities to see and museums and palaces and so much history. Each place we visited was worth seeing. My husband is a history buff and he had a ball (so did I!). The guides for each excursion were top-notch. There were guest speakers on the ship, concerts and more plus a glass making demonstration that was great fun! My heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Viking Aegir who were unfailingly courteous and helpful. There were 4 of us traveling together and we each developed such wonderful relationships with various staff. Regardless of where you cruise, the staff of each ship makes or breaks the cruise. The staff of the Aegir certainly made our cruise! I don't know how they managed to work so hard and still be so much fun. Our thanks to Vinnie for his many kindnesses and thoughtfulness, to Dan (our high-energy the program director), and Gilbert (one of the few bartenders anywhere who knew how to make Rob Roys!) and Tomas and Vlad and every last crew member on the Aegir. Finally: the ship was beautiful and very comfortable. The cabins spacious enough and very well laid out. The bed was really wonderful. I can't use a down pillow (allergies) and the staff changed them all to what I believe was a foam pillow but it was fine. The food was great and menus varied. The entertainment system was great, lots of good music to sit on the veranda and watch the scenery go by. Go, you'll love this cruise! Read Less

This cruise interested us because of the quaint and historic places to see and visit. Several friends have previously taken this cruise and highly recommended it. We left home two days early to spend extra time in Amsterdam, which we did on our own, not through an extension. This way we selected a very centrally located hotel, convenient to the places we wanted to visit, and pre-booked the museums we were most interested in and restaurants for both evenings. We were very highly satisfied with the hotel, the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum, the Anne Frank House and the restaurants: Vermeer and Restaurant Max. The Viking ship Aegir and its crew exceeded our expectations. The stateroom was comfortable. The housekeeping staff was excellent and very efficient. The waitstaff were just great. Meals were excellent with ample selection. The Program Director did a great job. Onboard entertainment was unexpected and added extra value to the cruise. We visited a very nice selection of ports with a lot of history. Guided excursions included a castle, an abbey, a palace, several medieval towns and many beautiful cathedrals. We selected only two optional excursions: an classical concert and a palace, both in Vienna. The final evening included a cruise of Budapest after dark to enjoy this beautiful city in a very special way. We definitely would consider a Viking river cruise in the future. Read Less

We had a king-sized bed and plenty of room for all of our clothes. Sitting on the balcony during the morning or evening was very peaceful and relaxing. I especially enjoyed the warned floor in the bathroom/shower area. I have neuropathy in my feet which are very susceptible to the cold, so this was a big plus for me. We also enjoyed the shore excursions at each port. We learned a lot about the different cultures in each port. The sights (especially the castles and churches) we visited were very enjoyable. Our Viking River Cruise on Viking Aegir was a dream come true! Our stay in Amsterdam before the cruise was terrific! We were met at the Amsterdam airport by a friendly Viking Rep and taken to our hotel. The Viking Rep at the hotel was very helpful and informative. The Movenpick Hotel was a wonderful place to stay. From the moment we stepped foot on Viking Aegir, we were impressed...by the crew, the ship, our room, the food in both the restaurant and the Aquavit Terrace. Our Activites Director, Dan, was so professional and knowledgeable about everything on the trip from Amsterdam to Budapest. I had sprained my ankle the first night in Amsterdam. When we got on board Viking Aegir, the Activites Director had been informed about my ankle and I was met with a wheel chair, which I used the first two days on board. Everyone was very accommodating and helpful while I was in the wheel chair and also when I "graduated" to crutches. Our cabin was very adequate and our cabin steward was wonderful! We always had fresh water, and our room was always clean and ready for us. The shower items, body soap, shampoo and conditioners were excellent. We were impressed with all of the shore excursions and the Optional Tours we signed up for; and the guides were very infrmative and passionate about each place we visited. When it was time to disembark, a Viking Rep went to the airport with us and got all of our boarding passes for us. Thanks to the staff and crew of Viking Aegir for this very special, long anticipated River Curise. Yes, we would do it again and hope to in the next few years. We loved the whole experience. All went smoothly and comfortably. The thing that set this cruise above many others was the warmth, friendliness and sincere caring of the crew. I have been in marketing and sales for years and am very tuned in to sincerity for a dollar. This was not the case here. I was treated like family and felt very cared for. Every crew member made me feel special and welcome - not just a high paying guest that one needs to be nice to. I definitely felt that paying the extra dollar for an outside balcony was worth every penny. I could actually touch the lock walls and when I wanted to retreat from people to my quiet space, I could, without missing anything. The food was excellent. Again, enhanced by the wonderful servers. It was obvious they loved their job and wanted to share their enthusiasm with us. My only thought that would have made my trip perfect if there had been a masseuse on board. We could not believe the wonderful tours that were included in the package, All the places we stopped at were absolutely wonderful. The scenery from the ship was the most amazing thing we have ever seen. So many beautiful castles and churches you couldn't believe your eyes. For being as old as Europe is, everything is taken such good care to preserve it. It was the most enjoyable experience to see all the locks and their workings and how these long ships past through them. The captain and his crew handle all this delicate traversing of the locks with ease. We will recommend this River Cruise to everyone we know. Everything was better than anticipated. If we were to cruise again it would be with Viking. Friendly crew, great food clean cabins, and a well directed tour. What else could you ask for? Everything that was scheduled came off without a hitch. The local guides were very good and informative. We enjoyed the open seating, but we gravitated to our special table because of the waiter. We did take an extension before and after. I felt this was necessary because one day inBudapest was not enough. Viking booked our hotels and it may have been less if we had our travel agent do it. The cost of the insurance was high. I did not understand that as we have been on tours before and this amount exceeded it by far. Those are the two negatives I can document, but that really had nothing to do with the wonderful time we had on the cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise, "Grand European Tour", embarking in Amsterdam, disembarking in Budapest, because of the beautiful cities, castles and scenery along the route. We toured castles, churches, small villages and large cities, and interacted with a variety of friendly and well trained local guides. Some tours were on foot, others were on a comfortable bus. The staff was wonderful, the food delicious and not overwhelming in quantity, and our every need was met. Daily tours, lectures and entertainment were educational and delightful. Enjoyed the small boat atmosphere, which allowed us to become acquainted with a variety of people. We were driven to the airport, where a Viking agent personally checked in our bags, verified our passports and obtained our boarding passes. We felt very pampered. A very relaxed way to tour Europe. Highly recommend this Viking cruise to anyone who enjoys history, architecture, nature in a by relaxed setting. And Read Less

Friends had been on several Viking River Cruises and shared their experiences with us. They rated the Rhine/Main/Danube Cruise as top notch, so we gave it a try, We couldn't have been more pleased. The service was outstanding; Viking staff could provide a "how to" for excellent customer service. The dining experience was top-notch, and the choices excellent, including local food specialties as well as time-tested favorites. The local tour guides added the critical element of a depth of understanding to the shore excursions. It was necessary for us to change ships in the middle of the cruse due to lock difficulties, but the Viking staff handled it without a hiccup! We spent an extra two days in Amsterdam at the beginning of the cruise, and three days in Prague after reaching Budapest, our final destination. We utilized Viking's services in those locales as well, and were quite satisfied. We will definitely go on another Viking cruise. Read Less

We have always wanted to go to Amsterdam. I also love flowers, and wanted to see the fields of tulips. We had been on the cruise on the Danube two years ago and had had a positive experience. We chose the pre-cruise option to be in Amsterdam two full days before the cruise. We were in the Movenpick hotel which was delightful. Its location was so convenient to the transportation to the city centre and found it an easy city to get around in. The Viking people were very helpful at the hotel and at the airport, so we were happy with the service there. We sailed on the Aegir, and it was very similar to our Danube ship. I have arthritis in my knee and used a cane and walker. The elevator was very convenient and I used it every day. I also appreciated being put in the excursion groups for the slower walkers. We called ourselves "the gimp group!" The food was marvelous, the entertainment was fun and pertinent to the tour, and the service by all in charge was excellent. We would be happy to recommend a Viking tour to anyone! Read Less

First river cruise and wanted to see the tulips in bloom. We learned a lot of WWII history and that was an unexpected bonus. Service on board was wonderful and guided tours exceptional. We took walking tours in both the Netherlands and Belgium and all were informative. We were comfortably taken to the ship from the airport and were taken to a hotel in which we were staying for a post cruise adventure. Pickup and delivery were timely and comfortable. The dining experience, breakfast, lunch and dinner were all amazing and our wine or beer glass was never empty. It was quite educational for us to go through the system of locks to get from one river to another. Enjoyed the Amsterdam canals and the dikes in Kinderdyke. The tulips were fantastic and offered us some great photo shoots. Those who served as tour guides were very good. All of them knew the subject matter and told the stories of each location in an interesting and many time humorous way. We made a photo album of our trip and have shared it with many friends. We have recommended the Tulips and Windmills cruise to anone who would listen. Read Less

Great cruise -- Viking River Cruises are great -- going on 2 other cruises next year. Service was good. Dining waiter was superior. Enjoyed the excursions. One excursion at each port -- included in the price of the cruise. Airport pickup went smoothly -- no problems with our luggage or meeting with our guide or bus driver. Disembarkation was helpful. Our bags did not have to be outside our cabin until 1 hour before leaving for the airport. So much nicer than the big cruise ships which have to be outside the cabin the night before. No big nightly entertainment shows, but the entertainment was pertaining to the cruise. One night a man boarded to demonstrate how wooden shoes were made, which he had made all his adult life. Viking River Cruises are more relaxed than the big cruises. Viking Aegir is a is the right size for the river cruises. Again our cruise was GREAT !!!!! Read Less

Best vacation ever! We wanted to see the tulips in bloom so we picked the Tulips & Windmills River Cruise. Amsterdam was impressive, so friendly, so many first class museums, so many bridges and canals to walk, so many photo ops, interesting food to sample, beers to choose and great easy local transportation. Our ship was small & intimate with only 160 passengers- Impeccable service, spotless comfortable rooms, great food and well planned included shore excursions. The ports were each memorable; we especially enjoyed Arhemn, Antwerp, Bruges, Horn and, of course, Keukenhof Gardens in Kinderdijk where the tulips were breathtaking. Viking's staff will do anything to make your trip fantastic including nightly entertainment that we thoroughly enjoyed for its variety. Best of all we made new friendships with couples on board and came home with once-in-a lifetime memories. Now I am trying to condense 2000 photos down to 200 favorites. Read Less

Wanted a fairly short river cruise to see if we liked it enough to take a longer cruise. (Which we are now doing next year) Really enjoyed the close proximity of the dock to the things we wanted to see. Most excursions were walking tours, which was very nice. Did not have to spend time in buses etc. The Tulips and Windmills cruise was a good introduction to river cruising. We wish we had gone a little later as we missed the blooming of the Tulips. We really enjoyed Antwerp, Brugge and Gent the most as well as Amsterdam where we started and finished the cruise. We are glad that we took the extra two days at the beginning to explore Amsterdam. It gave us time to really explore Amsterdam as well as being rested by the time the cruise started. Staff were fantastic from the moment we arrived at the airport. Read Less
