After a year absence from cruising, things had changed. Food is important to us, I think it has improved, my wife wasn't sure. Service was excellent and professional but fewer stewards. The room was good, clean and in good repair. They have reduced the room stewards by maybe 2/3rds, they work hard and do a good job but cant measure up to more stewards. Embarkation - we spent a night at the Renaissance in Amsterdam - since it was the HAL hotel, we joined their transfer - decided a cab on our own would have been easier and perhaps cost less. The embarkation process moved along quite easily.

The entertainment was very lame and few passengers even bothered going to the shows. The casino hours were restricted and had a surprise closing as we did not get into international waters as planned. In the casino even when playing $5 a hand blackjack or roulette you have to pay for drinks. This cruise was delightful but hotel accommodations prior to the cruise were terrible. We arrived in Amsterdam the day before departure only to find out that the Movenpeck did not have a room for us. We travelled with two other couples who, like us, enjoy participating in activities on board. On all the other cruises we have been on there have been many opportunities to dance to the live music of various bands and vocalists. We are three couples travelling together aged 50-60. We are active, energetic, friendly and love to dance. Well if you too are like that - don't go on Holland America. At least not on the Eurodam to the Baltic.
Apart from computer help programs (run by Microsoft) and some cooking demonstrations there are no interactive activities during the sea days.

Embarkation - We were already on the ship - the Amsterdam cruise terminal is not my favorite- it is a long walk to get anywhere. I find it dismal. It is not the same place as the River cruises depart from.- for more info see my review of the Norwegian Fjords

We spent 3 1/2 days in Amsterdam, thoroughly enjoying the city life, museums, great food, and great architecture. We booked the pre-cruise hotel through HAL, Renaissance Amsterdam. I have a good number of cruises behind me, 3 of them with HAL-Mexican rivierra, Caribbean and Panama Canal. I like Holland Amerika for good services on board, delisious food and for nice itineraries they have. No doubt, this line is far from the excellence in general but in my opinion they offer relatively good quality for money.

We sailed as a family of 5 in a deluxe suite and an inside cabin on this 8 day cruise to Norway stopping Bergen , Flam , Stavanger and Hardanger,
Good points:
1.The food was outstanding with the Asian restaurant (Silk Den I think) being the highlight. Service in the ambient adjoining bar by the bar staff was also brilliant.
