This was our first, and definitely not the last. Been on the big ship cruises many times, and did not know if we would like this type of cruising. We now prefer it. The ship is immaculate, comfortable and has everything you need. The crew was the best we have ever had, so friendly, humorous and helpful. Dining had so many variations, enough to eat, and so many choices. Quality was the best, so much better than the big ships. They are cooking to order since there are so few passengers. The shore excursions were all you could expect, kept us more than busy enough. Sometimes we just wanted some down time to relax. Which is your option, but we also wanted to take advantage of seeing all the sights. The cabins are small, as expected, but you spend so little time there, it does not matter. When you leave the ship you actually feel like your are leaving home. Read Less

My husband and I were somewhat apprehensive of a river cruise with a view to the confinement onboard a small ship and my first thoughts were "what are we going to do whilst sailing - will it be boring. However we spent a lovely week on board the Ama Sonata, the food at all meals was delicious as was the wine at meal times and although it was classed as House wine it was the best House Wine I have ever drank. The hours and days just seem to drift by. We met some lovely people and hopefully we will stay in touch The staff in the restaurant could not do enough for you in particular Francis who served our table most of the time. The cabin was comfortable and well designed utilizing every space. The bed was also very comfortable. Wi FI in your cabin was a bonus allowing you to keep in touch with family. The excursions were well organized and although you were asked to make your choices at the beginning of the cruise you could easily change on the day. there was entertainment on a few evenings and also a resident pianist who played music relating to the Era of the passengers. We particularly enjoyed Cologne and the guide Marcus was excellent so entertaining and added a bit of humour to the tour. Bob and Jess Hefford Read Less

This was our first River cruise. We had always wanted to see the tulips in Holland so we chose the Tulip Time itinerary. We embarked in Amsterdam and our ports of call were Hoorn, Arnhem, Nijmegen, Antwerp, Ghent, Wilemstad, Kinderdijk and Schoonhoven. Upon arrival our cabin was ready and our luggage was taken to our room and we received a quick orientation of our cabin features. Our cabin was 212 and we had a french balcony/ balcony combination. The French balcony would be a huge asset on this cruise due to the weather. The cabin was spacious and had a queen bed. The bathroom had a great rain shower head with great water pressure. The Apple entertainment system and tv were state of the art in each cabin. Our Cruise Manager, Uwe was absolutely fantastic. His organization skills were stellar and were evident in all activities. He had such a great personality and was so enjoyable to speak with. Even though our weather was rainy the entire trip with high winds as well, he always remained up beat and helped assure everyone's comfort. The Staff are a huge asset to the ship and all worked extremely hard to assure customer satisfaction. No request was ignored and all were accommodated. You were always greeted with a smile. We enjoyed the smaller ship size and the personal touches that AMA works so hard to provide. We would certainly consider taking another river cruise with AMA. Read Less

We are just finishing up our river cruise on the AmaSonata. A beautiful ship, lovely cruise and wonderful itinerary. The only one problem, weather. Mother Nature was not on our side this week as we had just plain awful rain and winds.Thankfully our good Captain Hank weathered the storm fabulously. You would expect rocking and rolling on the ocean, not the rivers of the Netherlands and Belgium. Through it all, Uwe, our cruise director, and the staff were fantastic. All the port excursions were great, even in the torrential downpours in Ghent and Brugges. The payoff was a beautiful day in Willemstad, Kinderdijk and the Kuekenhof gardens. Though the wind was brutal, the ports were quite breathtaking. The gardens, though not all in full bloom, were a sight to see. It is definitely a must do itinerary. In a few weeks, I expect it will get quite busy here in the Netherlands and Keukenhof as the flowers will be in full bloom. Thank you to our servers Laurentiu, Pavel and wine steward Ivo were awesome. Hats off to Mr. Gabrielle for working with my food allergy, it was nice to know how serious they take this. Our room was readily available to us upon arrival to the ship since it was the first cruise of the season. We met so many lovely people on this trip and will cherish the memories for years to come. River cruising may be more comprehensive and relaxing than ocean liners but not less strenuous as there is a lot of walking over many un-even surfaces that are cobblestones and such. They do have groups for gentle walking if you do have any mobility issues.

My husband and I just returned from a fabulous cruise on the Ama Sonata to the Christmas markets on the Danube. This was one of my "bucket list" cruises and it certainly met all my expectations. The ship is lovely and the service is excellent. Peter, the Cruise Director, was wonderful, caring for everyone's needs and quickly making changes when needed, always with good humor.

There were many options along the way and plenty of opportunities for shopping at markets in Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, Regensburg, Nuremburg, and Prague. The guides were knowledgeable and helpful. The food on the ship was very good and different wines reflective of the region were provided each night. There were some special Christmas activities on the ship. On Dec. 5 we put out our shoes outside the cabin door for St. Nicholas and received either a candy "Santa" or "Devil' the next morning. We also had a Christmas party with carols from the crew and a gift from Santa.

The experience was superb and we definitely will go on another Ama cruise in the future.

In November we cruised the Danube from Vilshofen to Budapest on this beautiful new ship. Every moment was amazing as was the staff. The cruise director, Peter, worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone's needs were met and that we all enjoyed ourselves. The same can be said about every staff member. The Captain was very visible and friendly.

Embarkation was quick, flawless and we were soon enjoying the Oktoberfest celebration in a tent on the dock.

The tours and guides ranges from very good to excellent, the food was well prepared and plentiful. I would have liked a bit less salt in some dishes but that is personal taste. This was a wine cruise and we enjoyed all the opportunities to sample not only regional wines but the wines from our hosts' winery, Wilson Creek in Temecula, CA. Their presentations were interesting and enjoyable .

This ship is very tastefully done and every passenger area is pleasant and inviting. The cabins are well equipped and of a size that is sufficient for the amount of time one is in the cabin. Water was replenished as needed as was the very nice bath amenities. This ship has one US outlet near the TV and with our travel outlet strip was all we needed to charge our devices. As we had our tablet with us, I did not use the internet access on the TV. The WiFi worked well and was only slow a few times. I used the hair dryer several tomes and found it to be better than my travel hair dryer.

There is a window in the bathroom that looks out into the cabin. One can flip a switch to make it opaque. However, I do not see any purpose for this window. It does become problematic at night because the bathroom lights are on a sensor and go on whenever the bathroom door is opened. This means that the cabin lights up during the night if one uses the bathroom and can disturb the other sleeping occupant. Wish there was a way to disable this light feature. It isn't necessary.

Although our cruise was not a Christmas Market cruise, the Vienna markets were open and passengers were offered a shuttle bus to and from during the evening hours. There were 2 other options during this time frame so it was a busy night. To accommodate everyone's activities, we were served an early dinner and surprised with a very traditional Viennese "snack" after everyone returned from their chosen activities. It was this kind of unexpected offering that pleased us. There were other surprises but I won't spoil anyone's future cruise by revealing them.

All the ports on this cruise were interesting and the scenery along the Danube was beautiful as we were able to enjoy the fall color of the foliage and vineyards.

Debarkation was well executed and organized. Breakfast was offered from 3AM on to accommodate everyone's departure time.

We had a problem with our airline check in and after trying to solve it myself, I went to Peter, the cruise director. As you can imagine, he was very busy making sure everyone got to where they were supposed to be on time, but he took the time to call the airline, request an English speaking CS for me so that I could resolve the problem. Again, above and beyond!

Would we choose AMA for a future cruise? Absolutely!

My husband and I just returned from a 10-night cruise tour on the AmaSonata, with AMA Waterways, in Eastern Europe. We chose a cruise tour that began with 3 days/nights in Prague. Both the land pre-cruise portion, and the cruise itself, were outstanding in every way. Prague is colorful, lively, musical, artistic and fairytale-like with its historic buildings and joie de vivre.

We also visited small towns in Bavaria, Germany, the wine region river valley of the the Wachau in Austria; and the cities of Vienna and Budapest. Our tour guides throughout were informative, hard-working, intelligent and knew just how to bring each location to life, and often with limited time. Our stateroom, which had both a balcony and French Balcony, was spacious, giving us that special quiet place to sit and read and watch the world go by. The crew was most welcoming and hospitable throughout our stay. Kata, our cruise manager, appeared to work overtime to make sure all passengers were enjoying their experience. The cuisine was always a delight, with local specialties reflecting the regions, included daily. Specialty dining was available and offered a quiet, more intimate venue at the rear of the vessel, and again providing topnotch offerings. I loved my massage, available from Alina, who also served as the hairdresser, flower-arranger...quite a multi-tasker. Nighttime entertainment was available for those who seek live performers, often showing off their local folklore in music and dance. One highlight for us was a concert in Vienna at Auersperg Palace. I just can't say enough about how pleased we were with the trip on this state-of-the-art ship!!!

This was our first river cruise. We were quite apprehensive about the people who would be onboard and whom we would meet..With only 164 passengers, we were not sure how things would work out. We were also concerned about the activity level. Well, let us tell you each and all our concerns were met in a most positive fashion. From the moment we boarded the transfer bus from Prague to the embarkation at Vilshofen ALL our needs were met. The Cruise Director, Reyka, was available to all and at all times. The Captain, and his immediate subordinates, the chief of the dining room...just everybody went out of their way for you. The tag phrase for this line should be:

AMA=EXCELLENCE

The tours organized by the ship were really comprehensive and interesting. Even our chambermaid went out of her way to be out of sight but always on hand. The entertainment onboard was local and suited to the days activity. We had dancers, singers, and of course, a wonderful pianist who sailed with us.We recommmend based on its level of service and caring.

SO, for this cruise, don't hesitate, just go.

We flew into Munich Germany and took the train on our own to the nearby port of Vilshoven, Took a cheap cab ride to the AmaSonata. AmaWaterways was wonderful about telling us exactly where the ship was docked by e-mail. Since we spoke no German we were a little uneasy but all went exceedingly well and was a fun adventure for US citizens not familiar with Europe's trains or languages.

The AMaSonata was absolutely pristine, the staff was fantastic, and the food and wine far exceeded ordinary cruise ship fare.

For the first time ever, We had what was classified as an inside cabin on the lower level which did not turn out to be a problem at all due to the great technology on the ship. We could see the forward view from the bridge on our television and could see out of a high side window which put us at water level on the port side. The windows were so clean that I actually took some great pictures by holding my iPad to the window for shots of beautiful castles or small villages going by. A few short steps would take us to the deck above for a more complete view.

We enjoyed the captains specialty restaurant dinner on the second night on the cruise, which was lovely. We never used the pool or the workout room because we were far too busy with the included tours. We only took one optional excursion to Schonbrunn Palace for $39 per person, which was a great price for a wonderful tour. The included tours usually picked us up in a bus, took us to the site with a guide and included admission and wireless earphones in order to hear the guide. Buses were extraordinarily clean and guides were great.

Onboard entertainment was wonderful starting with an Oktoberfest in July at dockside and including topical musical performances such as costumed Sound of Music presentations.

All in all, one of our best Cruises ever including the fantastic fellow passengers we met along the way.
