We chose the Magical Christmas markets to see Vienna, Salzburg, and Nürnberg, to enjoy some Christkindlmarkts, and to acquaint ourselves with river cruising. Ama has work to do. The cruise administration as we approached our travel date was disrupted by the Woolsey Fire in the San Fernando Valley, where Ama is headquartered. Ama needs better contingency plans if they are going to stay in the Valley. Fires in Calabasas, from my youth in Woodland Hills, are NOT uncommon. We were impacted by the water levels of the Danube. Our cruise was shortened from Nürnberg to Vilshofen, and, after we boarded, to Passau. We missed one of the best Christkindlmarkts in all Europe. I recognize Ama is a hotelier, a restaraunteur, and a ship line, but they need better decisionmaking on how to make the traveller's experience the best possible. That includes leaving ship if need be. The sailing plan? OMW. On Monday, for reasons known only to Ama, we left Vienna for Tulin. Guess what? Everything was closed. DUMB. Then, at 11 at night, we sailed back to Vienna to berth in the nest of ships again. Better to have spent another day in Vienna, and help us see more of that great city. Speaking of bad calls, let's talk about Sunday. There were three ships abreast at Handelskai that morning. Three sets of busses, and no one on shore to direct us to which group of busses. We showed our color coded ticket, and the guide said "This is your bus." Welllllll .... no it wasn't. It was the bus of another ship to Bratislava. You need passports for that tour. Turned out a third of the people on that bus were from our ship, misdirected to it instead of the bus for the Eisenstadt tour. It's late fall, early winter. It was raining most days, so the upper outdoor deck was unusable. The lounge was a hospitable place, with free coffee and tea at all hours. I discuss our cabin elsewhere. The dining? Superb. An advantage Ama has over Windstar and their ocean sailings is the free wine and beer at mealtime. I liked that! Service? Superb. Yes, I paid the expected crew's gratuity, and then some, but I also gave some to my cabin housekeeper and two of the waiters. They deserved it. Vienna and Salzburg are grand cities, worthy of much more time than the cruise could provide. We will be back. Overall, this COULD HAVE BEEN A FIVE BUBBLE CRUISE. The administrative and logistics decision cost it points. Read Less

This was my first river cruise. We joined a group of ladies who wanted to see the Christmas Markets. This has been on my bucket list as long as I can remember, so a good friend and I decided this is the time to go! We flew into Prague for a few nights first (we had both been there before but visiting this beautiful city at this time of year was thrilling.) We enjoyed seeing the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony to set off the season and the seven markets we found. Then we took a bus down to Nuremburg on a lightly snowing day, which added to the ambiance of the holiday season. Boarding the AmaCerto was an easy and quick experience, there were some snacks set up in the public area. We met up with many people that I had met before who had joined this group. To summarize the meals and service (both room and table) for the week was wonderful. Very friendly staff and well organized when we got together to set off at the ports. Some markets were walking distance from the ship and some we needed to take a bus, all were wonderful ports! I cannot say which Christmas Markets were our favorites, as all the cities were so beautifully decorated and each one had a different feel to it. Yes, they basically sell the same things but because the set up and festivities are all individualized, we never got tired of them. Each market sells their own souveniour mug (inexpensive, and if you give it back to them after you finish the gluwein, they will give you the deposit Euros back). Besides Prague and Nuremberg, we saw markets at Regensberg, Vienna, Linz, Melk, Salzburg (special sign-up), and Budapest. We loved the evening cruise down the Danube to see the Parliament all lit up in Budapest, such a beautiful way to end the cruise. The AMA staff, tour director and guides, bus drivers were all great. We had special memories of leaving our shoes out the door one night so that a big chocolate bar was left in each upon waking in the morning, we were surprised with beautiful scarves (for ladies) wrapped in lovely boxes, festive gifts from Santa on our last night when he came on the ship, not to mention being greeted each day upon returning to the ship with a hot towel and gluwein to welcome us back. We stayed a couple of more nights in Budapest on our own before returning back to the states, a very walkable city and one I would like to return one day. All in all, this was one cruise that more than exceeded any of my high expectations. We plan on participating in the Rhine Christmas Markets in 2020...I sure hope I can wait. Loved every second! Oh, meanwhile, my husband and I are going to sail the Rhine and Moselle Fairytales cruise on the AmaPrima in a couple of weeks. I wanted him to experience this river cruise and I know it will be a great time, as well! Read Less

They met us at the airport, led us to the bus taking us to the port. We had not one minute to worry about anything. The ship was clean, the food was good, and the staff were wonderful. From the Captain, Hotel Director, Cruise Director to the kitchen staff--they were wonderful. They met every request with a smile. Our cabin was always and promptly cleaned. We enjoyed all the shore excursions. In fact, most days we did both morning and afternoon tours. The end of the tour, they got us to their staff at the airport, and the staff walked us wherever we needed to go and offered to stay with us through each step. We came home happy and relaxed--like you should be after a vacation. Would we go again? You bet. We are already looking at other Ama cruises and are excited to find many places we'd like to see. We chose this cruise line since we'd cruised Tulip TIme about 10 years ago. This time took family on Christmas Markets cruise from Amsterdam to Basel, including pre cruise time in Amsterdam. I needed two cabins so budget was a consideration and AMA was somewhat less expensive than first choice Uniworld. We were not disappointed in the least: the AMAcerto was decked out in holiday finery, staff including cruise director Sonja were top notch, the cabins were lovely and spotless, and the food was a real step up from our prior cruise on AMA and uniformly excellent compared to our experiences on Oceania and Seabourn. Excursions were split up by interest and fitness level (we took a 3 hours power walk through Strasbourg, where other "gentle walkers" needed more assistance. Something to please everyone. Excursions were not overcrowded--probably 20 in a group at most. Local guides were excellent. Some fun on board activities in the evening, everyone in a festive spirit, just a very, very pleasant cruise visiting the beautiful Christmas markets along the Rhine. Everything about this cruise was quality, and I considered it excellent value for money. I'm fussy and have no criticisms at all. We are looking forward to doing the Christmas Markets on the Danube and will definitely choose AMA for that as well as for any other future river cruises. They have really stepped up their game since we did their Tulip Time cruise about 10 years ago. Read Less

I took a group of 26 people on the Enchanting Rhine itinerary. I had sailed this itinerary 4 years ago on Viking and was interested in the difference between the two. Behind the scenes my contact in the groups department set up our group in the Chef's Table for the night I wanted and it was only us which was nice. Check-in was very easy and organized. Our sailing had about 130 passengers. The reception desk staff was very helpful and organized. The cabin (Cat. C - French balcony) was plenty big and had enough storage. Be sure to look under your bed as there is a large pullout drawer for clothes. The bathroom was small, but big enough to get showered and do what you had to. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows could be better. Doina was our cabin steward and she did an excellent of keeping our cabin clean and providing whatever we asked her for. DeJan was the cruise manager and he did an excellent job of serving all different types of people. He organized the tours in the ports and made sure that everyone was taken care of. He responded well to suggestions and made our trip very fun - he even paid for the entertainment to stay onboard overnight so that they could continue with the party. Everyone was dancing and having such a great time that he decided to extend the duo's time on the ship. As a group of 50-55 year olds we really appreciated the fun entertainment that the ship provided on several occasions. The food was very good and there was plenty of variety. The beer and wine flowed at lunch and dinner. The best part of this ship, however is their crew. Milosz (bar manager) and Marius (asst. bar manager) really went out of their way to serve. All of the restaurant staff were excellent as well - anticipating your drink order, making special requests, etc. The captain was also a really nice and professional man. I dined with him at the Captain's dinner and he was funny, knowledgeable and a pleasant person to talk to. The whole crew really does sacrifice a lot to work away from their families and they deserve every tip that they get. The tours were varied and there was usually more than one per port. We particularly liked the biking tour in Rudesheim through the wine country. It was not hard and the tour leaders did a great job of education us about the region, life in the region, the wine etc. A few of my friends did the hiking tours and really enjoyed them as well. This is a great company for the younger crowd because there are active pursuits. Do not hesitate to book a cabin on this ship or cruise line. Read Less

The trip down the Rhine River with stops at 2000 year old German cities along the way and too many castles to count was stimulating and beautiful. The ship was new, extremely comfortable, food healthy and light ( although one could eat more calories without any trouble), a good but small gym and an amazing staff. Everyone was extremely responsive to any logistical request and or maintenance need ( we had a water leak in our bathroom that was fixed within minutes) Departures were arranged with efficiency and no confusion even when fog canceled many flights and required re-booking. The only problem was the low level of the water in the Rhine due to lack of rain so our arrivals were slowed by the necessity of traveling behind other slower ships all using the only available channel with enough water.
