This is something my husband and myself have talked about doing for sometime but have always felt it was a little expensive , however, having had a recent bereavement in the family and deciding life is too short we booked our trip just a few weeks before sailing . We have no regrets , the trip was wonderful . We were made to feel at ease as soon as we boarded , the ship was gorgeous and the staff so welcoming , nothing was too much trouble . Our Cruise Manager ( Rachel) superb x but all the crew have to be complimented . Everything was so well organised , the catering and various options for dining were superb . We have met some lovely people on board , the Rhine is stunning and we were blessed with beautiful weather . As for value for money that is provided on this cruise , you certainly get a lot for your money and believe me that’s something coming from. Yorkshire girl !! Read Less

Our second cruise with AMA Waterways. We enjoyed our first cruise so much we decided to try a second. And, it met our expectations. Beautiful venue on the Danube, great stops and tours of the area. We also enjoyed the great service and crew and our cruise manager made sure everything met everyone’s expectations and that everything went off without a hitch. Our start in Budapest gave us ample time to experience Hungary and its rich history. We very much enjoyed walking through the area along the Danube and into town for shopping and experiencing the local atmosphere. Our stop in Bratislava was very enjoyable and gave us the opportunity to experience a taste of Slovakia. Vienna and our other stops in Austria were very enjoyable, getting to experience the countryside and local crafts, food, wine and the opportunity to lean more of certain European history of the region. Our final stops in Germany and Ama’s Octoberfest was a great ending to our trip.We are looking forward to our next cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise because AMA made us an offer we could not refuse after they had to change an itinerary due to bridge construction. With discounts and credits available, we chose this trip despite it's stopping in two ports we had earlier visited. We had been on AmaPrima during its inaugural season and I found myself looking for signs of wear and tear after I noticed how pristine the ship looked. Other than some chairs which looked a bit tired, the ship was immaculate. The cabin was so clean and well maintained that we could have been the first cruisers to occupy it. Because it was a river cruise, the cabin was not large, but we had no problem with storage or getting around. The crew was as professional and courteous as we had come to expect from AMA and Rolf, the cruise director, was professional, helpful and consistently good humored. The shore excursions were well organized and informative. Also, the excursions were not over scheduled, leaving us some good downtime and making daylight cruising along the beautiful Moselle river a regular part to the cruise. The food was up to the usual AMA high standards except for the chef's special slow cooked lamb; that was the best meal I have ever had on a river cruise ship and among the best I have ever had on any ship. My husband and I spent a couple of days in Lisbon a few years ago, and were eager to see more of the country. This was our third AMA Cruise, and it did not disappoint. We included the pre and post extensions in Lisbon and Madrid. Ship and Cabin Due to the lock sizes on the Douro, the ship is smaller than those on the Rhine and Danube, carrying 96 passengers on this cruise—but all was scaled down appropriately, and we did not feel pinched in the public spaces. The cabin was efficient, the beds high enough to store away the large suitcases of chronic over-packers, the balcony small but enjoyable (Category B, Lisbon deck). We left a note for our cabin attendant asking for an extra layer of cushion on the bed, and it was taken care of by the time we returned from dinner. TIP: I had read on a previous review that even numbered cabins were less likely to dock right next to another ship, and we found that to be the case (happened in only one docking location). We booked this cruise along with friends we met in our first AMA Cruise, and enjoyed making more friends along the way. The sense of community on river cruises is a big plus for us. Food The food on this ship was excellent. Lots of variety, including local dishes, and incredible Portuguese breads, pastries, and cheeses. We discovered a love for Portuguese wines, and enjoyed the included glass of port at the end of each dinner. The cruise included three meals off-ship: - Dinner at Quinta de Aveleda—beautiful gardens and dinner venue overlooking the vineyard. Thoroughly enjoyed this event, food, and wine. - Lunch at Quinta da Avessada—fun excursion, food good but not great. - Lunch at a hotel in Salamanca on disembarkation day—excellent buffet, including both a seafood and vegetarian paella. One ship dinner was advertised as a “barbecue.” That word set an expectation for many of us that turned into disappointment. Perhaps this would have been more appropriately described as simply a “buffet.” Service To a person, every AMA staff person was warm, friendly, helpful, and smiling. Shout out to Filipa, who helped us arrange a port tasting in the lounge during the US Open telecast, and to Machado, who took excellent care of ten of us who managed to grab the private dining room on the last night onboard. My husband mentioned to the Hotel Manager, Ricardo, that we enjoyed the wine selections, and he presented us with a list and description of each offering. Outstanding! We also witnessed special care and attention given to passengers with mobility issues—on the ship, during excursions, and during land extensions. Cruise Portugal is a beautiful country. We fell in love with Porto, and really enjoyed the illumination cruise on the first night. Remaining docked overnight gave us ample time to explore this beautiful city, along with Vila Nova de Gaia, on our own. What we discovered along the Douro was incredible landscapes—hills and vineyard terraces unlike others we’ve seen in Europe. The 30-45 minute bus rides from docks to excursion venues were actually enjoyable, as we were winding our way high into the mountains with breathtaking views along the way. We were on the same bus with the same guide and driver most days. Diogo, tour guide on the “yellow submarine” was awesome! Local entertainment was enjoyable, especially the Tuna band, and local dancers. The weather was great the entire trip, so made good us of top deck for daytime cruising on river and through locks, and evening wine sipping with friends. Ports and Excursions - During Cruise Porto - just beautiful with a unique charm. Really enjoyed docking there overnight. The Douro is small and navigable only during the day. This resulted in some leisurely mornings or afternoons sailing from port to port, where the docking locations were small, and the excursion the treat. We particularly enjoyed: - previously mentioned Quinta de Aveleda - the Lamego Museum (surprising collection for this small city) - Mateus gardens and palace - walking around Pinhao - charm of Castelo Rodrigo - beauty of Salamanca - topography/landscape along the river and roads of the Douro and valley Pre and Post Our Lisbon hotel, the Sofitel Liberdade, was perfectly located—close to restaurants, shopping, the Baixa and Alfama districts. Of the tours, we especially enjoyed the Monastery (and Pastis de Belem tasting) and Pena Palace. Our local guide, Christina, was excellent. The Madrid Westin Palace was also well located—a 15 minute walk to Plaza Mayor, and near the museums and Botanical Garden. We added the optional Flamenco show and dinner, and were very glad we did. One of Spain’s best dancers was performing while we were there. It was well worth the price, although the food was a bit disappointing.Toledo is a must see, and Madrid is a beautiful city. Our local guide, Mercedes, was terrific. Both locations offer affordable, excellent dining opportunities, and getting around on your own is easy. As always, AMA takes great care of you—from the first greeting at the airport, to the attention and care of the Cruise Manager (Christian!) throughout the entire journey, to the AmaVida officers and staff, to the AMA representative waiting for us at our departure airport. We feel valued and cared for with AMA, and are already researching options for our next AMA adventure! We recommend this trip to anyone who is looking for something a bit different from other Central Europe river cruises. Read Less

My husband and I along with 10 other friends just returned from sailing 7 days on this ship. It was excellent in all ways. The food was great - especially the Chef's Table which was no additional charge for each of the guests to enjoy one ight onboard. The Cruise Director, Radostina (Radi) Markovic was fun, knowledgeable and tireless in ensuring that all the passengers had a good time and the entire staff was wonderful - including Victor, our tireless exercise guru. We started in Amsterdam with a pre-cruise 3 day adventure and loved every minute of this wonderful city. Embarkation was easy and we were allowed to go right to our rooms with luggage delivered within minutes. The stateroom/cabin was well appointed and roomy. We loved the outdoor veranda as well as the one that was glass from ceiling to floor in case the weather didn't encourage being outside. Bathrooms were roomier than usual and housekeeping did a great job two times a day. The ports were interesting and different and the shore excursions were available for all sorts of needs: gentle walkers, regular and high activity level. Most of the guides were excellent and in all the ports, we had enough time to enjoy the destination on our town. The only thing that could have been improved is that it would have been great to have some lunches on sunny days on the deck and also drinks service. There was a bar but I never saw anyone tending it. We could have used more lectures about ports and issues. Our small group got special attention which we loved and even had our own farewell reception on the last night with the help of Radi and the amazing F&B team. The entertainment after dinner we wonderful and high quality and we all had great fun each evening. We will definitely sail AMA again in another part of the world. Read Less

We chose this cruise for my husband's 50th birthday. We started in Prague which was on his bucket list & extended in Budapest. We arrived on ship to be whisked promptly to our room. We headed to make our dinner reservations for the week which went super smoothly also and it was perfect we unpacked and then headed to our welcoming entertainment outside of the boat. The river boat is outstanding, the furniture throughout the interior is beautiful, as in the restaurants. There is a shaded area on the upper deck to enjoy sail outs. Comfy sofas at the front of the ship. I never felt like the boat was busy we always walked right in for breakfast and lunch to have a table waiting for us. Don't hesitate if you don't find something on the buffet you can always order something or ask if there is anything else prepared that day you may not realize you can have. A river cruise is busy so be prepared, every port we loved for different reasons & we sometimes left our tour group and did our own thing. Explore, enjoy and make the most of your river cruise. This is our 9th time river cruising with Ama Waterways and once again tour experience was exceptional. Our cruise included a pre-stay in Paris and the a seven day cruise to the Normandy coast and back. Timing of all departures and excursions was outstanding and transportation, when required, was with Ama Waterways own buses which were clean and comfortable. The ship (AmaLyra) is not one of there newest ships but has been kept up remarkably well. Our cabin had a French balcony which we consider the best for river crising where your room is your balcony giving you that extra room with picture perfect views. Our cruise director was Maddy and this is our third experience with her - we consider her one of the best we have ever had. As usual, the staff were excellent and always there to help when needed and have great interaction with the guests. Dining was excellent and representative of the areas where we travelled with some special twists. Entertainment is restricted due to the nature of river cruising but local entertainment, some of which we have seen before, was brought on board a few evenings and did a wonderful job. With all the activity during the day, late evenings ae a premium. Ports were beyond expectation and selection of optional cruises made it even more so. There was a good blend of excursions mixed with daytime sailing that made it very enjoyable. The presentation given by the cruise director the day prior made selections so much easier when there was some confusion on our part as to which one to cruise. We have now been on all the rivers that Ama Waterways travel including a reapeat of the Douro river but would not hesitate to go again. Read Less

The crew is so very well trained, the food is delicious and the ship is beautiful. The chef and kitchen crew never disappointed us. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We ate at the chefs table one night, one word, DELICIOUS. The lounge was big and comfortable. The ship was spotless, someone was always cleaning something. The rooms always had fresh towels, the bed was comfortable and the bedding was clean. The rooms were nicely appointed with WiFi, computer and tv. We had the BEST crew. From the minute we said hello to the hugs and tears when we left, they felt like family. Bojan was our cruise director and Victoria was our cruise manager and they were always happy to help. We had the best time on our Danube cruise with AMA. The AMALea is a beautiful ship, but more importantly, the staff was just awesome. The service was so special, and everyone seemed to know what you wanted or remembered what you had before you even asked. We had just about perfect weather and no water issues. Our cruise director, Stephanie, was so much fun, always available and seemed to be everywhere. The captain was out and about as well, and the ship was immaculately maintained. Our room was category CA 325. with a French balcony. It was perfect for us. I did not feel we missed out by not having a full balcony, but I’m very happy we had the French one. The sliding window opened fully and it was nice to be able to see the countryside while sailing. We were rafted several times, but it really wasn’t an issue. The bathroom and amenities were very nice. The iPad that controlled the lighting and temperature wasn’t too difficult to figure out. The room temperature was very comfortable. The room is located near the rear of the ship, nearby the Chef’s Table restaurant. This turned out to be a really good location. There is a coffee machine in the Chef’s Table, so in the morning it was just a short walk for a cup of coffee or tea. You could also sit in the restaurant and enjoy your coffee usually alone as most people didn’t take advantage of this coffee maker. There is also stairs from the Chef’s Table to the sun deck, which we did not discover to the end of the cruise. It would have been a nice short cut to get on the upper deck. The food was outstanding. The pastries and bread were to die for. Wonderful fresh fruits, salads, hot, delicious soups. Lots of choices. The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant was a fun delicious experience. My only complaint about that is the acoustics in the room. It was a bit noisy, but everyone was just having so much fun. We also enjoyed light lunch in the lounge on occasion with soups, small sandwiches, salads and usually a hot entree as well. There was an ice cream social on the sun deck one afternoon. They make the ice cream and it was outstanding. Their wine selection was usually just delicious, local Austrian or German wines. There also was a California selection available. It was free flowing through lunch and dinner and you could top off before leaving the dining area to enjoy on deck, your cabin or lounge. Sip and Sail was a big hit with a cocktail of the day available along with wine or other listed cocktails. Bitburger beer on tap. Local entertainers were brought on board and there was a pianist who played and also dj’d In the evenings. The most fun was the Oktoberfest at the end of the cruise with an oomph band, dancers, singing and lots of beer and pretzels. It was a great end to a great cruise. Shore excursions ran smoothly and all of our tour guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. Our evening in Grein at the castle was very nice but be warned. The walk up to the castle is a hike. Uphill, lots of steps. They did supply a van for people with issues, but most walked. It is a workout. There were lots of fitness classes handled by a very fit trainer. People were enjoying working with him. The swimming pool was heated and getting good attendance after touring days. It was an enjoyable amenity to use. Sitting on the sun deck enjoying the scenery along the Danube was also a relaxing end to the day. So overall, we very much enjoyed our AMA experience, and would not hesitate to book a cruise with them again. It was a first rate experience. Read Less

We went on a Backroads biking cruise, and for this purpose a river cruise was great. The AMAWaterways staff was wonderful - interesting, always willing to help, and just generally very competent. I can't say enough - the staff made the trip. It's a small ship, and they did the best with what they have. The music was great, the facilities were spotless, and they had a decent selection of fitness classes which is nice because the exercise room is pretty minimal (2 people max, bike and treadmill). Logistics were great. The food was very "American" - no local cuisine. That's a shame because the countries traveled on this cruise had fantastic food. That said, it was plentiful and of good quality and fresh, and while a bit on the bland side for my tastes, there were a lot of choices, and the service was great. Having a local option would have been nice. The wine choices were limited but excellent - better than average for a cruise. The exercise guy had a lot of classes, and there were a lot of excursions and walking tours. The top deck has chairs and a bar which is nice for viewing. Read Less

My 10-days with AMAWaterways in Prague and on the AmaDante were totally wonderful. The suite was extremely comfortable, the food and beverages were exceptional, the staff was incredibly thorough and attentive while remaining almost invisible, and the excursions were well organized and varied. I met so many delightful people and saw incredible historic sites, while enjoying wine and beer tastings, and hikes and exercise. Our tour director provided activities for all levels of ability, and I was glad this included “active” options. Just spending time on the sun deck or in my stateroom with the floor to ceiling windows was great, too. This was officially a “wine cruise” and we had an onboard winemaker who guided us through tastings of the wines from the different regions through which we traveled as well as providing samples from his winery. Combined with the four- course dinners and the other meals (breakfast, late risers parties, lunch, tea, tapas, and late night snacks), it was a true “foodie” delight. I’m already looking forward to the next cruise with AmaWaterways. Read Less

I booked thru a tour company. Had never heard of this cruise line until then, this was an absolute amazing cruise. The ship is spotless, all the crew is very helpful and friendly. The food was amazing. The excursions were very good. Did not have to pay extra for most of them. At lunch and dinner you could have all the wine or beer you wanted to drink. They had a sip and sail every night with other drinks you could have. Our dining room girl Ayu was amazing. We tried to sit in her area every day for our three meals. It was nice to try the different ethnic foods. It was so much nicer than the bigger cruise lines. Only 164 passengers. It was easy to get off and on for the excursions. Used the pool one evening, it was very warm and relaxing. I would recommend this cruise to anyone, but not a cruise for children. Read Less

With this being a. New river boat, expectations were high, the cruise and itinerary were outstanding, our cabin was great 210. The bathroom lacked shelf space which could easily be remedied by putting corner shelves on either side of the mirror. The crew was fantastic and their goal was to make the cruise memorable. Captain Pedro was ever present and interacted with everyone. This is the first river cruise we were able to use the balcony more than once. No nighttime cruising so many early morning coffees on the balcony. We also lucked out on our bus Guide Louis (blue bus) who was knowledgeable and funny, our bus started off with 22 anded up with 30+ because we were talking about how good he was. Breakfast was always good, however dinners could be hit or miss, I never saw so many meals sent back on any other cruise we have taken. The scenery was spectacular. We lucked into very good weather which also added to the enjoyment. Read Less

My husband and I were celebrating our 65th birthdays. This is our first river cruise. Our travel agent highly recommended AMA over any other river boat cruise. The ship, cabin, food, entertainment and service were outstanding. We particularly enjoyed the new "Wellness" program. Marcelo was an excellent fitness instructor. The shore excursions were very well planned. The local guides were excellent. We would have enjoyed all of the excursions. It would have been nice to spend more time in each port to enjoy more of their offerings. In general the time available for excursions (especially free time) was limited compared to time on the ship. In some ports, the docking locations made access to nearby cities/towns inaccessible. With regards to the staff there were some standouts. The Cruise Manager, Vanessa was delightful. She was very accommodating and approachable. Her Port Talks were very informative. We also enjoyed our Chef's Table Specialty Restaurant experience. In addition to the great food, the waitstaff made the dinner extra special. Alex, the Head Waiter was the perfect combination of charm, class and wit. The only dissapointment we experienced onboard was the coffee machine that dispensed instant coffee. We would have enjoyed freshly brewed coffee instead. Read Less

We read many reviews and for our first river cruise experience, we decided AMA was the way to go. It was a bit more costly than Viking but I can tell you it was worth it. The food and the service was impeccable and there were only 150 guests on board opposed to Viking which I believe has over 190 on each boat of the same size. Nicola, the Cruise Director was a delight and very helpful and oh, so funny. We met some lovely people on our trip. We were only the fifth group of people on this new boat and it was gorgeous. So clean and roomy. The rooms were cleaned every morning and there was turn down service at night. You received the itinerary and schedule for the next day in your room while you were at dinner. The restaurant and hotel staff were incredible and all were very helpful and friendly. The wine pours are very generous. Happy hours feature a special drink of the day as well. We did book the Chef's table for dinner and it was lovely with excellent service. Small portions but it was 7 courses. I would highly recommend AMA Waterways and the AmaMora for your Rhine river cruise. Read Less

We were looking for a five star experience on a River that had been recommended to us by fellow travelers on the Danube. The river scenery is indeed five stars. But the boat itself, while new, is not. Laminate throughout. The cruise also has major flaws. Not worth the price paid. The crew was very good to outstanding. But when you contrast that with an amazingly poorly organized dinner service - not the servers fault - and other serious flaws, you get a less than could have been experience. The small ports stopped at are pleasant enough, but really no suggestion was made by the crew to get off the boat and visit them. Instead of visiting a local restaurant or two, we were bussed to large wine estates. Interesting, but instead of a 45 min bus ride each way, surely there were closer local options. Pastry - 5 stars. Had 7-8 outstanding offerings each lunch... Breakfast - 4 stars. Nice variety in the buffet, but not all was fabulous. Nice cook to order stuff tho, and great bread and pastries. Dinner - 2 to 3 stars. Mostly hit or miss. Some items four stars, some inedible. But the real negative was the system for ordering, and delivering the food. Negative 2 stars. How can it take 1 3/4 hours to deliver three items to a dining room.? There were only 75 people on our boat and limited choices. .....plenty of dining room staff.... The rooms were a little strangely laid out but ok. Ours had a balcony, but there definitely is a better way to design same. Beds comfy, and cabin service good. This boat has a great top deck, but it was rarely used by other guests, or promoted by the crew. No lunches or events there, in spite of the wonderful scenery we were passing by. Oh what our fellow travelers missed.. The local entertainment brought on Board was outstanding, especially a Tuna band, but more could have been done here. Again, not the crew’s fault, as they worked with what was given them. The average age of those on board was probably 75. Options were offered on tours for slower walkers, which was nice, and needed. Overall, plenty of potential with the Amadouro, but AMA has a long way to go to get this boat to a five star level. Read Less

I am getting emotional just reflecting on how good the experience was. The food, the outstanding service, and the staff all exceeded what I expected. As a teacher, It was nice to sit back and forget the worries of teaching, grading papers, and the responsibilities of just being an adult. It appeared that every moment was thought out in detail, and the service was what I think resembled near butler service. I am already thinking of planning another cruise next year. For anybody thinking about taking a river cruise, don't give it a second thought and book. I traveled with my life long partner, and we've been together for 30 years. There were other couples of the same sex, and we were all accepted and treated as one of the family by the staff and cruise members. What an experience to last a lifetime! We chose Amawaterways after reading some very positive critics about food and excursions on their ships. On Amaviola, food was fair but not exceptional compare to other cruise lines but "La table du chef", once by cruise, deserve congratulations. For excursions , it's true that choices were varied for every kind of people, young and older ones even with bike rides offered. What bother us the most on this cruise was general atmosphere with a lot of american's families getting together with grand ma et grand pa and not attending at all at cultural shows presented on the ship ....8-10 persons on a cruise of 150 persons for listing a french signer at Strasbourg, every body was on sun deck instead....it was pitiful! The night after, ship canceled show supposed to be presented !!! A separated club of 45-50 cyclists was on this cruise and may be this separated group changed atmosphere on the ship ! I don't know ! Also, service was average in room, bar and restaurant nothing too bad but nothing too good also. At bar, we were running to get drinks at tables, we were obliged to go the the bar counter .At front desk, smile wasn't included also.! On the upper deck or sun deck with a little pool very attractive and useful, under 35C weather, no service at all during all week with one exception to offered us once German coffee! We cruised twice before on Avalon's ships ( Danube and Seine rivers) and the personal was more joyful, friendly, service was better and food as good as on this Amawaterways cruise, member of Chaîne des Rôtisseurs For the river and cities to visit , it was amazing and we recommend this cruise with what companies you like but not necessary with AMA. For arrival and departure at ship and airports ....wow...exceptional personalized service and for that AMA deserves congratulations. We know that AMA can't be responsable of participation of their clients on a cruise but for those who want more joyful cruises, look before at what kind of people ships companies try to attract. May be we were only back lucky and AMA can offer more friendly cruises . Read Less

We selected this cruise based on recommendations from Cruise Managers from our prior cruises who highly recommend the Colors of Provence cruise. In addition we booked the pre cruise visit to Barcelona and the post cruise to Paris which I would highly recommend. The Ama Waterways staff was excellent notably the Cruise Manager Rachel Coutro who was with us for the entire two week and did a marvelous job. The Ama Cello is referred to as the Grand Dame of the fleet and is well appointed and comfortable. The food was very good and presented in a delightful way. They blended the food with Provence, the morning we visited a Truffle Farm when we returned to the ship for lunch the chef served pasta with truffe oil which was out of this world. The cabins are smaller than ocean going ships but are very comfortable. I am 6 foot 4 inch's and I fit in the shower without a problem. REVIEW:      I am back from my May 23rd, AmaDolce Taste of Bordeaux.    Lets just say I'm glad I sailed on AmaStella and AmaPrima previously.  If this was my first Ama sailing I would never have sailed her again.    The bad:  The food offerings were far different from my previous experience.  There were two main entrees in the evening to chose from, one fish and then one meat.  Then had the always available burger, chicken breast or steak.  I can honestly say that neither the steak or meat options was ever tasty.   I recall their meat dishes melting in your mouth.  This wasn't the case.  The service was terrible.   They would bring french fries, disappear and when you finally get their attention to bring ketchup it would take 15 minutes and usually a second request.    Same with the drink service during dinner.  One night we sat and there was no butter (normally there were three types), one was missing and again, after asking we had to ask again after 15 minutes it was brought.     Two nights prior to disembarkation, we decided to sit in a different section and did receive good service, so shame on us for not changing servers sooner.  (although service should be the same throughout).    Keep in mind this ship that normally sails with 146 only had 115 passengers on board.   There were many empty cabins.   Being in wine country we expected to have more tastings and such on the excursions.   It just seemed a lot of time was spent trying to kill time.   Overall, in a day we may have actually visited one winery a day and received three small tastings.     The good:     Love the new Wellness coach on board who held fitness stretches, yoga, to high intensity classes each day.    Love the Sip and Sail cocktail hour each night.  Their complimentary wine offerings are very tasty.  My own tips:   If you need a hotel prior/after the cruise in Bordeaux, I highly recommend Hotel Vatel.  It is part of the international hospitality school and the service is excellent, the room large for a European hotel and it was very reasonable ($150).  You can walk to the river cruise from there.   They actually saw us walking towards the ship and a staff ran up to take our bags.  We did our own pre-cruise in Tours & Amboise.  It was very easy.  From Paris CDG we took the high speed rail and in 1 1/2 hours you are in Tours (St. Pierre des Corps station) we stayed in an airbnb nearby.  Took a train for $1.30 to tours one day and Amboise another on our own, recommend the Le Petite trolley in both towns to give you an overview then return to the areas your like.    One day we did a full day excursion to three Chateaux out of Tours.   We got back on the high speed rail and continued onto Bordeaux.   Very easy as that is the same train whether we would have taken if directly CDG-Bordeaux.     Our travel agent knew we would stay one night in Bordeaux before embarking.  He advised us to pick up our Cit du Vin tickets the day we board and arranged that and recommended booking lunch in their rooftop restaurant Le7.  We dropped our bags off at around 10 am with Ama who gave us our tickets (for all passengers this Cit du Vin excursion is done (for our cruise) the last day after arriving back in Bordeaux).   Cit du Vin is an interactive museum (personally my daughter nor I cared for it) and many passengers we spoke with the last day did not either, but it is hyped up to be great.   You will be left on your own and an audiovox to do it at your own pace.   You can spend an hour to half a day if you want.    We did enjoy the glass of wine up top (part of your ticket) and then we proceeded to have lunch at Le7 (i booked this months in advance on my travel agents recommendation.      We really did enjoy doing this.    My daughter did do the city tour of Bordeaux with the excursion but when the rest continue to Cit du Vin she returned to the boat.  I had taken a bicycle from the ship and did my own thing.    Probably my favorite day as it was always the best weather day we had.     Read Less

We chose this cruise on the recommendation of our travel agent. He is well traveled and told us this line was the best. We have been on many ocean cruises but the river cruise is better. We loved every moment. The staff is amazing. Our favorite bartender was Misha. We loved seeing her every day. She was always smiling and kept us smiling too. Nothing is too much to ask. The food is gourmet at every meal and again the staff makes every meal memorable. The cruise director was everywhere. I don’t remember any cruise director from other cruises but Florentin is in forgettable. He made sure everything was perfect. I had the best massage ever thanks to Rumena who was wonderful. Each port of entry had at least thee choices and we enjoyed each place. The weather was terrible but we still had a great time. We would choose this line again. Read Less

We had previously taken a River Cruise with AmaWaterways in Vietnam and Cambodia and the captain was excitedly talking about the AmaMagna. We booked it right away and so happy we did ! It's the 'widest' riverboat on the Danube, so very spacious throughout. The food and restaurant staff were outstanding ! Breakfast and lunch had both 'buffet' offerings as well as menu options. There's also an 'extra' family style restaurant named after one of the Ama founders, Jimmy, that was our favorite restaurant on the ship. This particular cruise happened to be a 'wine' cruise so there were several enjoyable wine lectures which were informative and enjoyable. Most every day we would have the opportunity to wine taste throughout the week! What we love about Ama is that for daily excursions, they always use headsets so that you can always hear what they are saying without having to stand right next to the tour director. It seems that a lot of the people taking the cruise were active and fit. There was a fabulous exercise director who held morning classes varying between yoga, stretching and core strength and also offered personal training for anyone interested. There were also bicycles on board for those that wanted to bike at the various ports. I would highly recommend this ship for anyone wanting a fabulous experience ! Read Less

A couple of friends had sailed AmaWaterways and were very happy with their experience. Our travel agent had also sailed on this cruise and said it was good. Raul (the captain) was kind enough to show us around the navigation bridge and explained how the ship worked. Raul (the cruise director) was ALWAYS engaging and kept us informed several times per day. Unfortunately, one of the locks broke on the Rhine river so we were delayed and missed a couple of shore excursions, but we still had a great time. They made it work. We traveled with our adult son and his wife, who is pregnant so this was an opportunity to travel with them before they have the baby. We were concerned that the age demographic would be too old, but it wasn't the case. There were people on board from 15 - 85 and several in their 40's. Read Less

This was my fourth river cruise on AmaWaterways and every one of them has surpasses my expectations. Everything on this cruise was so well planned - the ports and shore excursions, the meals with a great array of food to satisfy any taste. The staff were always available to answer our question or provide whatever help we requested. Shore excursions are included. Often there are several to choose from - bike tours, gentle walking to more rigorous ones - something for everyone. As for the meals, there was always something for all tastes. The breakfast buffet had a wide assortment of foods. Special orders were available too. Lunch was served in the dining room with a light lunch alternative in the lounge. Seated dinners were always in the dining room with an optional chefs table restaurant available by reservation. Wine, beer and soft drinks were included with lunch and dinner. I hope to return for another AmaWaterways Cruise. I know I won’t be disappointed and neither will you. Read Less
