Excellent cruise line, The ship was small with 97 passengers. Average age in the 60s from various countries. mostly Canada. The ship was well designed and comfortable. The cabin #217 was well planned. The bathroom and shower were bigger than expected for a small ship. The balcony was small but room enough for 2 small chairs and table. Coffee, tea and snack was down the hall (2nd deck) No coffee maker in the cabin. The service was excellent in every category. The staff was polite and informative. Best cruise director we have ever had - Luis Ribeiro. The Douro river was very scenic with mostly vineyards So, the emphasis is on wine. 1st week in Sept was best time to go, no rain and 75 for 15 days. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was served in the dining area. A later buffet is also available. The quality was excellent. The ports were all good. All the excursions were worth going on. (One required a 2 hr bus trip there and back. The excursions had 3 levels from easy to more difficult. Read Less

My first river cruise experience was pretty good, They include wines and beers at dinner. The wines are not all of good quality but they are not bad. They include a happy hour an one hour before dinner, but the bartenders don't know how to make drinks. They are very bad preparing drinks and they get upset if I return the drink. Better change for beer or wine before returning the drink. The gym is very small, but nobody uses. Only 2 bicycles and a machine, not weights. The breakfasts are good and the staff serving the restaurant are excellent. We travel with a group of 44 people, so we had a great time on excursions. We paid on the cruise to see a folk dance that would be in an opera building, but the dance was done in a super small room with uncomfortable chairs and without air conditioning, The truth is not worth paying at the dance show cruises in the opera buildings because they only accommodate you in small rooms. The same thing happened to us in the Baltic cruise, it pays dearly for what they give. The room service was quite bad, even one day they put broken sheets on the bed.I had to look for soap because they never left another soap in the bathroom The dinners are very good. DO NOT pay for the Cheff Table, it is not worth paying, even the wine served was three dollars. It is a totally different experience than sea cruises. Very expensive cruise for what they offer. AmaWaterways does a great job with their attention to detail and overseeing all logistics to help assure a stress free travel experience. The new ship, AmaMagna is exquisite with 4 dining room options and a wine bar. Hopefully, this vessel will serve as a paradigm for all future Ama ships. Their forte lies in their shore excursions and tour guides. All guides are true experts in their respective subjects, while being respectful and open to questions. The staff on board are obviously trained with an emphasis on courtesy and attention to the voyager. The food was very good(not excellent)-we preferred the quality of the breakfast and lunches to those of the dinners. They do attempt to sprinkle in some local cuisine choices. The cruise director was a true gem. He was the point man that allowed this trip to be exceptional. Ama should be blessed to have John Riley on their staff. Read Less

This was our first river cruise. We will definitely do it again, and based on this experience AMA will be our first choice. Everyone on this ship went out of their way to be friendly and helpful, from the captain to the cruise and hospitality directors, to food service personnel, waiters and bar attendants, and to housekeeping staff. Food was excellent, particularly the Chef’s table which was served with pride by the chef and his staff in the special eating area at the ships stern as we happily took in the (sunny) view of the picturesque waterways. Activities were well organized and interesting with enthusiastic local guides. Was particularly impressed with the cruise director who proved to be a great entertainer while bringing us all up to date on upcoming events and schedule. He seemed to always be there to interact with guests or solve problems. Amazing how he also made challenges of scheduling of supporting transport and guides invisible to ship guests. Appreciated the security of on board entry and the concerns of local guides to always have the right number in the group or safely avoiding the crazy Dutch cyclists and cars. Entertainment highlight was a classical trio who were fantastic. Other entertainers were comfortably appropriate for guest demographics. Judging by the age of cruise guests, this cruise was most frequented by 55+ folk. Often they retreated to cabins after dinner. Despite fitness leader, not a big draw except for small number who usually took more active cycle tours. There were a few kids on this cruise but with much walking and historical focus, probably not best for kids. I have written reviews for trip advisor on several occasions but have never had the opportunity to be so positive about a trip experience. Keep it up AMA, we’re looking to do this again next year! A final word on the weather. It was cold and damp for early April so bring warm clothes and rain gear. Fortunately only one day was rainy but our umbrellas saved the day. Despite the weather Keukenhof was beautiful, as was the Florillia flower show that AMA arranged access to before the show opened a few days later. Btw, when in Bruges, make sure to get your chocolates from Dumont’s. Read Less

AmaKristina is simply elegant, ultimately classy, yet unexpectedly down-to-earth and comfortable. We enjoyed the Christmas Markets on the Rhine from the first moment to the last. Every detail from the excursions, to the stateroom appointments, to the dining choices, to the decor was meticulously thought out, and the personal service along the way from the crew was warm, welcoming, and refreshingly precise. The Christmas Markets were so charming, and the transfers (by bus in most cases) to the Christmas Markets were easy and quite comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the Christmas Markets in Cologne and Riquewier - but each market was very unique and had regional specialties. Fitness classes were offered free of charge each morning, and the availability of bicycles aboard the ship for bike tours provided unexpected fitness options. The Chef's table was spectacular - and is included at no additional charge one night during your 7-night cruise. The Chaine de Rotisseurs (I may have misspelled that - sorry!!) dinner was another special night - offered in the main restaurant for all guests free of charge. The sip-n-sail cocktail hour (free mixed drinks from 6pm to 7pm) was also unexpected, and a nice addition... with regional beers and wines offered each day with lunch and dinner the beverage options are quite inclusive. A few touches that I particularly appreciated: a Christmas wreath on each cabin door, in the bathroom a blue light automatically lights the way to the toilet in the middle of the night when you open the bathroom door, and automatically the blue light dims to shut itself off. And - amazing but true - NO ONE FROM AMA EVER ASKED ME TO DO A REVIEW. Refreshing!! After being pelted with requests for reviews from over eager staff members and via urgent emails from every hotel, airline, restaurant I visited this week - this review is the only one that I will spend my time doing. And, as I write a review I am hopeful that this review will be found valuable by other fellow travelers. Read Less

We wanted to see the Christmas markets in Germany and were not disappointed. The staff aboard the AmaStella were outstanding, from cruise director Sonja Lodewijkx to our "personal" waiter, Dragos, and I say personal because that's the way he treated us, was just excellent. With the incident that occurred in Strasbourg, captain Rene decided to move the ship from the French side to the German side for the safety of everyone. Cruise director Sonja did an excellent job of find new excursions for the entire ship and did so with very little time, considering the circumstances. Thank to you all the staff aboard the AmaStella for ensuring the safety of it's passengers. The Christmas party on the next to last evening was fantastic. It was so much fun, no one wanted it to stop. Each meal was a culinary delight but I blame head chef Tomi for making me buy larger waist pants. All in all, and excellent experience. Read Less

We really wanted to do a Christmas Markets cruise and selected AMA based on advice from our travel agent. The ship was well laid out and very comfortable. The staff from the cabin attendant, cruise manager and hotel manager, dining staff, front desk folks were all over the top helpful, caring and pleasant. The food and beverages were very good and offered a broad range in choices each day. The bar service was very good and very attentive. The excursions were broad enough to appeal to all types, very educational and we enjoyed them a lot. Made it really easy to enjoy the vacation as a whole. I was interested in the workings of the ship as well and spent a good amount of time with the Captain understanding it as well. Getting on/off ship before and after was very streamlined and they helped with everything. Will be booking another cruise with them in the very near future! Read Less

This was our first river cruise. When traveling, I prefer to stay in luxury hotels and spas. Prior to the cruise, I was anxious about the quality and space onboard, since I had read many reviews of small cabin space. We opted for the suite upgrade and was given suite 304. I was pleasantly surprised at the space and finishes. We were given little extra tokens of appreciation such as in room champagne upon arrival, ama logo travel bags and luggage tags, Ama scarf and ama cap. These were nice little surprises that made us feel appreciated. There were numerous small things that they did for us that made us feel like family and that we mattered. The saying that people may forget what you say and do but never forget about how they make you feel, is so true with this ship. The entire staff was professional and considerate. Our bathroom had both a full sized tub and a smaller shower. The shower was a little tight for my husband as he is 6’3” and a big guy but he managed. The tub was full length and comfortable. We had both a French and traditional balcony. It was too chilly to sit on the balcony but would be nice in warmer weather. We had a computer and a wall of closet space. Very limited drawer space but plenty of hanging space and shelving The Amaserna is a beautiful boat. The interior looks new and well cared for. Due to staying busy with tours, food and finding new friends, We didn’t use the spa or small gym. They also have a small hair salon.a nice walking track and heated pool which were on the top deck. We were told they offer fitness classes in the top deck during warmer weather. The captain was pleasant and efficient. We had no issues with docking, locks or travels. The food was good and at times exceptional. The chefs table was a nice surprise and a fun and excellent dining experience. The breakfast was standard and good. I didn’t have lunch any day on the ship. We were constantly offered food - early breakfast, breakfast and late breakfast, lunch, tea time, sip and sail, dinner, and late night snack! Plus, we are at the Christmas Markets or stopped in small cafes in town. The tours were small groups of around 10-15 people. They offered active, regular and gentle walkers. My husband was having hip pain. So, a few days we did the gentle walker and it was so nice to have door to door service to and from the Abbey and Churches. We were given audiovox headphones to hear the tour guides. This was helpful. We could move away to make pictures while still hearing what they were saying. Of course, there was never enough time at any location. But, this was a 7 day cruise and we had 7 days of towns and cites to visit. It was nice that we were given the opportunity In Linz to (1) stay entire day in Linz (2) short Linz tour and half day excursion to Salzburg (3) full day In Salzburg. (4) morning in Linz and excursion to Chesky Krumlov I wanted to do all of them but chose the morning in Linz and half day to Salzburg. Great choice for us. On board entertainment was what I expected. Not the best and not the worst. We had a pianoman full time and some “lock hoppers” who hopped on board between the dam locks and provided unique local entertainment. We had a trio of classical musicans, “Von Trapp family of singing and dancing, lastly a one man acoustic guitar rock and roll oldies entertainer. These were fine and what one would expect on a small boat. Our transfers to and from the airport were easy and the staff was helpful. We had someone at the airports (arrival and departure) from Ama who helped with our luggage and finding our way to checkin and to security. Overall, it was a great experience and makes us want to do it again with Ama. If we had planned to visit all these cities and towns with tours and food , the cost would’ve been so much more. Currently, we are planning our next trip with Ama Read Less

After 5 spectacular river cruises with a rival company I took a chance on AMA based on their superior reviews, big mistake. The water level was too low to do our original itinerary (not AMA's fault) but the substitutions they made were ridiculous and certainly not comparable to what we booked and paid for. To date, no compensation or consideration has been offered. But besides the bugled itinerary there was a lot of problems that were not related to water level. The "light lunches" and "late night snacks" were the same three sandwich combinations every day...salmon, tomato-cheese or peanut butter and jelly. Really! There are no food options offered outside of designated meal and "snack" times. Cabin interiors were a bit worn but adequate. The desk staff seemed overwhelmed and quite frazzled. The entertainment was basic at best. The over-all staff attitude seemed to be one of simply herding people about rather than one of service and a few were border-line rude. I will never sail AMA again. Read Less

We chose this cruise because Dr. Frank Winery was hosting it for their wine club members and their wines were featured. This was an awesome cruise experience. The staff was extremely attentive. The food was excellent. It was a new ship with all the amenities. Most everything was first class. Three of the nights' entertainment was outstanding! John Riley, our cruise director, was fabulous. He could turn a disaster into an apple pie! Every attention to detail was given. He was on call probably 16 hours a day. He was always available and approachable. He became a friend to all on board. Because the river was low due to lack of adequate rainfall, the ship could not sail the last leg of the trip so John had to arrange for travel and lodging for a night for all passengers at our final city. It was disappointing to not sail the last day/night, but John made the best of it and made sure we all were comfortable and attended to. There are only two issues I believe that could be improved upon: First, the "in house" pianist was O.K., but not outstanding. He was fine for some light background pieces for lunch and late afternoon, but didn't really cut it for the night life. He was pleasant enough and personable, but just was not of the level we were expecting for this type of cruise. Second, it appeared there was no thought about lighting in the main bar/lounge area. Different lighting is needed for different functions/moods/situations. The lighting seemed helter-skelter. Whatever was on, was on. The staff didn't know how to adjust it and didn't seem to understand the differences in lighting moods. All in all this was an outstanding trip for us and we look forward to once again sailing with AMA in the future. Read Less

Sailed with AMA before, loved it! Their attention to detail is superb. This time we experienced a drought that altered our course and experience. AMA took us to 2 extra countries not on our original itinerary, made everything pleasant and seamless, remained positive and upbeat, and gave us a 100% credit for a future cruise of our choosing! We were on two ships, identical accommodations. Cabins great, ships great, dining excellent, service great, entertainment and activities great, excursions fabulous, staff attentive and wonderful, embarkation, disembarkation and ship transfer went smoothly and perfectly! AMA is an outstanding company, a class act, and I will most certainly travel with them again! They outperform all of the others and are far superior! The Captain gives each lady a rose upon arrival, and by the time you get back from dinner, the rose is in a vase. The crew knows your food likes and dislikes, allergies, and every detail to make you feel comfortable. They make special occasions unforgettable and treat you with the utmost respect! Read Less

We chose AmaWaterways Melodies of the Danube river cruise to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary, and we could not have made a better choice. We were to embark in Budapest, but unfortunately, due to low water levels on the Danube, Budadpest closed its ports, and the ship was in Vienna. This was at no fault of AmaWaterways. Although we were disappointed, AmaWaterways and our cruise manager, Sebastien, made sure that we did not miss a meal, excursion, or port due to the closure. We had arrived in Budapest two days prior to our cruise, and upon learning of the port closure, AmaWaterways arranged a room for us in the Budapest Ritz Carlton. It was here that we met Sebastien and soon realized how valuable he would be to the success of our cruise. He was very knowledgeable of the ports and excursions, and extremely organized. With his guidance, we were bused to Vienna where we embarked the AmaSerena, and the cruise continued its schedule unimpeded. The AmaSerena was impeccably maintained, and AmaWaterways commitment to safety, comfort, and service was at the highest level. Cleanliness was a high priority throughout the ship. The crew of the ship was very friendly and helpful, and exuded a pleasantness that made you feel like family. Our cabin, though on the small side, was very clean and well stocked. Our cabin stewardess was very efficient and timely in maintaining our room. Meals were well organized, and the food was of the highest quality utilizing many locally grown products from the area near our ports. The ship has two dining areas; one being open seating, and the Chef's Table Restaurant, requiring reservations and providing a wonderful fine dining experience. Following meals, entertainment was provided in the lounge for both listening and dancing. Local musicians and entertainers were brought on board to provide a taste of the local culture. AmaWaterways even provided an exclusive "Oktoberfest" in a tent on the pier next to our ship in Vilshofen, Germany, the terminus of our cruise. Lastly, excursions were well planned and used local guides knowledgeable in the customs and history of the city being visited. A brief description of the next day's excursion was placed in our cabin nightly. We could not have been happier with our AmaWaterways anniversary cruise on the AmaSerena. Service was top notch from beginning to end. Read Less

We were wowed by the crew especially the cruise manager “Marcia”. The food was excellent and suited all types of tastes and appetites along with the abundant poured wines paired with all the meals .(except breakfast Thank God)! We saw lots of other cruise companies as we traveled up the Rhine and our ship always looked the best and had active guests and crews having fun on deck all the time . Others cruise ships seemed to not have the same energy . Our on shore activities were great especially the hired by ama tour guides in each port , turely amazing and so knowledgeable and fun to follow through village listening to all the history and amusing details of our visit . We started our journey two days prior to our 10 night cruise on the AMAPrima by acclimating to the time change (9 hour time difference from CA) in Zurich, something we highly recommend regardless of your starting disembarkation point. Get acclimated to the time change then hit the cruise. The train from Zurich to Basel took us through the heart of Zurich to the pastoral countryside on the way to Basel which was a short one hour ride. Upon arriving to our disembarkation point in Basel we were warmly greeted by the crew who took our luggage to be delivered on board for us to our cabin. Our cabin was located on the upper level with a balcony and french balcony. We sat outside everyday on the balcony as our preferred morning ritual that was quiet and scenic and very fun when going through the various locks. The cabin was spacious with a European Queen bed (King size bed in U.S) that was perfectly soft yet firm with great pillows for us side sleepers. You can spend time in your room and it is perfectly acceptable, but the ship offers so much more with the sun deck, rear private dining room (open for day use and a perfect place for a game of cards. Because of the incredible weather, we spent most of our time on the front bow in the shade, or on the Sun deck (which had to close on a number of days due to low bridges and locks) or the upper deck in front of the wheel house which was an ideal spot for our cruise through the middle Rhine gorge where dozens of castles dot the hillsides Each night we were greeted with happy hour and signature cocktails in advance of dinner and made the most of it each night with free cocktails expertly crafted by our new friend Namenia, and Sebastian who were great bartenders and hosts each night. We chose AMA because of their culinary rating above many of the competitive cruise lines, and we were not disappointed. Each night there was a Chef's Recommended Menu along with standard offerings served tableside by excellent waitstaff. When it comes to the wine and beer, you never have to ask for it because it just shows up and keeps flowing. Two days in and the staff knew our likes and dislikes and anticipated our desires. Truly a great dining experience each day. Breakfast and lunch offer similar offerings with extraordinary items and standard fare. The chef’s table dining room provides an intimate experience and not to be missed with an expert five course prix fixe menu delivered to perfection each night (same menu assures that all passengers have a chance to dine here). Onshore excursions were expertly guided by local historians and enthusiasts who all spoke English and told insightful stories with details of history, origin and thinking of the time. The guided tours were fun, but we also chose on more than one occasion to make our own way and to experience the local color more directly. Something to note is that of all of the shore excursions there are only three that require you to bus to the tour location; Riquewihr, Strasbourg and Heidelberg. Otherwise you can walk off the ship and you are in the heart of your destination. Each day allows for some form of excursion off ship, as much of the cruising is at night. We are already looking forward to our next cruise with AMA on the Danube. Nest time we plan to go with one or two other couples as this first trip was just my wife and me. We want to share the experiance with others. Read Less

We have been on a bunch of Ocean Cruises but this was Our First River Cruise and I always wanted to travel the Danube - so we did. We travelled with another couple and while cruising we met a bunch of new friends. We ended up being a group of 9 hanging around together for dinner and cocktails, catching up on our day of tours. We started with a few days at The Hilton Old Town in Prague arranged by AMA Waterways which included a get together and a couple of tours with our Fantastic host David Rosell. On Embarkation day, Ama Waterways took us to our ship in Vilshofen Germany. Everything worked out great, very smooth transfer. AMA thinks of everything. David Rosell was our Cruise Manager and if you ever have him on your cruise consider yourself very lucky. David was absolutely fabulous - with Everyone!! He took the time to talk and laugh with each person, help you with whatever you needed and entertain you with his stories. The crew of the AMA Viola is amazing. They all work so very hard, very helpful, polite, pleasant and they can't do enough for us to make our cruise special. The engineers who hook up and un-hook our ship at each port work so extremely hard. It was great just watching them. I cannot say enough about this crew - FABULOUS! Dining on The AMA Viola is fantastic. If you have a special dietary need, just let them know. They will remember you and therefore will take care of your needs for the duration. They even knew which day we were going to dine at The Chef's Table restaurant and told me in advance that they had everything set up. WOW! AMAZING!! The meals were great. Lots to choose from. Presentation was amazing at the buffets, A la Carte Dining and The Chef's Table. Your beverages at lunch and dinner (yes, you can have free champagne at breakfast) are included as well as happy hour each day before dinner. The wait staff remembers what you like to drink so they are well prepared. There is nightly entertainment (and also during Happy Hour) on board. This takes place in the lounge which is where the onboard entertainment is and yes, it holds everyone - they have set it up quite well. Some nightly entertainment is better than others. Ports and Shore Excursions keep you very busy... everyday. Each port is very well set up for all excursions with lots to choose from. Everyone has their own listening device so you can hear the very knowledgeable guides. Yes, there is a lot of walking but remember, you are in Europe to explore and enjoy and that is exactly what we did. When Docking at some of the busier ports, you definitely dock beside / with other cruise ships. It makes it very interesting. Not only do you walk thru the other ships lobbies (where you can be snoopy) but you can also see what the other ships / cruise lines look like. I have to say that the Top Deck of AMA Viola was far superior than any other river boat we saw. No other ship had a pool, some did have a hot tub but it wasn't rare to see a 'boring sundeck' with just a few chairs - no cushions on these other ships. AMA is a very relaxed and casual way of cruising the rivers. If you want to get dressed up then you can but if you want to just be 'smart casual' - no jeans then that works also. Gentlemen, bring a jacket if you want but you don't need one. Not even at The Chef's Table Restaurant. Another great thing..... there are no photographers running around trying to take your picture for $$$$ so don't forget to bring your own smart phone or camera. One of my favorite things was cruising during the morning and watching the beautiful scenery go by. I wish we had more of that. I absolutely LOVE AMA Waterways and will definitely travel with them again. AMA is now my first and only choice for River Cruising. Read Less

The service in the dining room consists of getting your own coffee, trying to hunt up somebody who will get you a wine, the Hotel manager was totally out of her depth, the staff ran the place. Some of the excursions were excellent but a number including a "Signature" excursions were a joke. The nightly wines were undrinkable, the house wines were better, some of the food was excellent, some like the duck and salmon was over cooked dry and terrible , the portion sizes were a joke with men getting a child's serve and the ladies more than they could eat. Finally if you are looking for a travel experience you should be aware the boat is 90% Australian, most very old, but then the nightly entertainment is obviously designed around that demographic. This cruise was chosen specifically because of the itinerary. It went from Amsterdam to Basel and for 11 days. Our cruise manager was Dejan Stancic and was absolutely one of the most fabulous and entertaining person! He made us smile and laugh each evening when he provided the passengers (guests) with previews and information for upcoming ports. He was very knowledgable and approachable so it was easy to ask questions of any kind that would help make your trip even better. The rest of the staff were absolutely awesome, all were friendly and smiling, we always looked forward to meals and just being anywhere on board because they made us feel like family quickly. The captain, crew and hotel manager were also very friendly. What a great time we had! The ports were fabulous (read the itinerary in the brochure) and there also was a few relaxing mornings on the ship so we did not need to rush as much like the seven day cruises would be. Of course, the views on the Rhine and Moselle were gorgeous and seeing the castles dotting the hillsides (as Dajan said, you would be seeing so many on each side of the ship that you would begin to feel like a ping pong ball!) This was truly a fairytale experience! The ship was beautiful, the cabins spotless and embarkation/disembarkation experiences were seamless. Thank you AMAPRIMA for this wonderful and memorable cruise!!! Loved every second of it. Read Less

AmaCruising in Style! We just returned from the 8-day Tulip Time cruise with AmaWaterways. We began with a 2-night pre-cruise stay in Amsterdam at the Intercontinental Hotel...but that’s another whole review in itself. Let me just say it was delightful. The Cruise Director.... Our Cruise Director, Edward, actually was on hand to greet us when we arrived for our pre-Cruise stay in Amsterdam. He immediately made us feel like someone was there waiting for us to arrive and would be there to help in any way he could. He knew the city and gave us several things to do while we waited for our room to open. He even gave suggestions for nearby restaurants. On the AmaPrima, our ship, Edward continued to be available and able to handle all questions and or concerns such as: Should I buy bulbs while I’m here?, Where is a good place to get chocolate in Ghent? And what can you tell me about the AMA trip to Africa. I was amazed that while we were on excursions in the cities, he managed to check in with each group and see if anyone needed anything. He also encouraged immediate feedback about our excursions which makes me think that AmaWaterways works to continually improve the services they provide. The Ship Staff... Professional, friendly and courteous, aptly describes everyone from the Hotel Manager to the Waiters to the Housekeeping Staff. Rooms were spotless and service came while you were out at a meal or off-ship. I especially like being able to meet our housekeeper, Nadia, in person and talk with her. When I needed ice one morning, she saw me in the hall and immediately offered to get it for me. The waiters in the dining room made each meal a delight and were attentive to each person at the table. Everyone seemed genuinely interested in making sure you had everything you needed and were enjoying yourself. Staterooms, Food, Services & Excursions... Rooms were a great size with nice appointments. Thick, fluffy towels were a great size and included washcloths (not always the case in Europe). There was ample storage and hangers for clothes. Our rather large suitcases did not fit under the bed but did fit in the closet with room to hang clothes. Amenities included a room safe, hair dryer, toiletries (nice scent), computer to hear announcements, watch movies, or TV, listen to music and check on the weather and WiFi which had a few snags but was operating 95% of the time. We enjoyed the nightly Sip & Sail which featured a cocktail of the day and peanuts or pretzels to munch on, as well as a full bar. Drinks bought after dinner, were put on your bill. Nightly programs was top notch and included a variety of entertainers. I did not have one bad meal on the AmaPrima. There was always a variety of choices at each meal and often hard to make a decision. We were impressed with the Chef’s Dinner located in a small dining room at the rear of the ship. An elegant presentation and delicious meal made this a highlight for my husband and I. AmaWaterways provides excursions at no extra cost. There were 2 per day and each one tailored to the activity level if the participants. You could choose to be busy each day or not but every trip we took was very enjoyable and well worth the time. The Keukenhof Gardens trip was my favorite. And in conclusion... This was our first trip with AmaWaterways and we had a wonderful time in the Netherlands and Holland. I feel strongly that we will sail with them again and would recommend them to family and friends. Read Less

The ship was beautiful with a fabulous sun deck. There was a pool which was great for relaxing after a day of sightseeing. The food and wine selections were outstanding especially at the Chef's Table Restaurant - a small specialty restaurant available to passengers at no additional cost - it offered a multi-course dinner and wine parings. There was a wide variety of tours and activities in each port. We visited Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary, our favorite was Budapest. We could select walking tours (regular or slow paced), bike tours, hiking tours, or independent activities in which you would have maps and suggestions and could go off on your own. A few of the options included food/beer/wine tasting experiences. The best part of the trip was the wonderful staff. They could not have been more helpful, friendly and truly accommodating. Looking forward to our next trip with Ama Waterways. Read Less

This was my first riverboat cruise and it was absolutely fantastic. Everything was perfect, the ship was beautiful and the cabin was great. Loved the entertainment, even the crew sang Christmas Carols one night! The dining was exquisite and the waiters certainly looked after any diabetic and allergy concerns. The tours and guides were wonderful. Interesting to see the boat going through the locks. The service was outstanding too. Loved the Welcome and Farewell cocktail parties when the champagne was overflowing! With fewer passengers we certainly felt we were treated like royalty and for sure I would book another cruise with AMA. Perhaps one in September or October would be my choice! Our Cruise Manager was amazing and looked after us very well. Our luggage was always where it should be. We did the extra days in Lucerne and Zurich and again the tours and guides were excellent. An AMA Waterways helped us at Zurich Airport on our departure. When I got home, there was a lovely handwritten postcard from AMA, personally signed by some of our crew favourites! AMAzing holiday and I would give AMA Waterways five stars for everything and would definitely recommend them to one and all. Can't wait to go again! Read Less

We spent 3 nights in Prague, and was then transported to Vilshofen to start our weeks cruise. Everything from landing in Prague was great, Ama met us at airport, then our guides in Prague were wonderful. On the ship the staff was the best. Food was wonderful. Great variety to choose from, and all was very fresh. Cabin was larger than I thought it would be and bathroom was the same, good size. The excursions were great, several to choose from including bike tours. We did a few extra excursions, which were a lot of fun and well worth the extra money. As far as entertainment on ship, it was varied, and was great. We didn't choose this type of trip for nightly entertainment. Such busy days, we were pretty tired at end of night, so this was perfect. I would definitely choose Ama again for my next river cruise. Read Less

This was a wonderful cruise on the Danube river. Amawaterways had so many thoughtful touches, such as wine or hot drinks and a snack as you arrived back from an excursion. We were so well cared for. Our cruise manager went above and beyond, even finding out what extras we wanted, and making them happen. The staff were all so friendly, fun to chat with, and hard -working. The ship was comfortable, exceedingly clean, and lovely. The food was excellent. We had one friend who has a gluten allergy, and she was delighted by the foods they prepared especially for her. There was a variety of shore excursions. The ones I did, I would love to do again. My favorite evening entertainment was a string group "La Strada". They were amazing. I also enjoyed an evening of local folklore dancing, who transitioned into some great jazz dancing. Embarking and disembarking were smooth and easy, very well directed. They even had a guide at the airport who made sure we got checked in and headed to the proper gate, on our way home. I look forward to traveling with Amawaterways again. Read Less

My wife and I planned a vacation to France for our 35th anniversary. We wanted to spend a week in Paris and a week in the French countryside, but we didn't want to take a bus tour where we would be checking into and out of hotels every day. Our solution was a river cruise, where our "hotel" could travel with us. After reviewing a number of river cruises in France, we decided on the Ama Waterways Taste of Bordeaux, and we were very happy with our choice. This was our first river cruise, and we found the intimacy of the AmaDolce a refreshing change from large ocean cruises. The food was wonderful, among some of the best meals we've had our lives. The service was impeccable. We grew quite fond of our ebullient Bulgarian waiter Nicolai. The excursions were very good and, unlike ocean cruise excursions, almost all of them were included in the cruise price. True to the title of the cruise, we visited a number of wineries and sampled some good wines in the Sauternes, Pauillac, and St. Emilion regions. The guides and winery hosts were all very knowledgeable and helpful. There were also excursions to local chateaux and other historical sites, including Roquetaillade Castle, the Citadel at Blaye, the Château de Vayres and the Château de Montaigne. A high point for us was a weekend craft fair in the Blaye Citadel, where we got to talk to some very nice artists. We were also happy to spend some time in the city of Bordeaux. Despite its size, the AmaDolce had both laundry service and a hair salon, both of which were surprisingly reasonable. Since we needed to get back to Paris for our return flight, we decided to add the Loire Valley post-cruise extension, and we were happy with that tour as well. The chateaux we visited -- Chenonceau, Amboise, Chambord, and Blos -- were fantastic. It was a special treat to see Clos Luce, the last home of Leonardo Da Vinci, and his grave in the St. Hubert Chapel at Amboise. Our Sorbonne-trained guide Claude was excellent -- he gave us both the historical background and the juicy details of the French Renaissance kings. The cruise director Elia accompanied us on the extension and took good care of us. Read Less

We chose this cruise line and trip based on a recommendation from a good friend who took this trip last year. We flew into Amsterdam and sailed the Rhine for 7 days to Basel. Booking the trip with an Amawaterway rep was easy. One call to Jonathan and he made all the arrangements and flight details. He was responsive to our questions and kept us informed before our trip. We even got upgraded to a room with a French balcony. Our room was very small, but the shower was very nice. We also liked the Mac TV/computer in the room. Our room was kept absolutely spotless and was serviced at least 3 times a day. The staff are all very hardworking. Food was very good and I recommend eating one dinner at the Chef's table. It is a separate dining area where the chef prepares a variety of tasting dishes. It's excellent and a lot of fun. We also enjoyed eating a few lunches upstairs. They offer most of the items on the buffet, but it is in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. You can enjoy a quick bite before or after an excursion. The first few days of the cruise was a bit slow for my husband and me. We just didn't feel like we had enough to do. Those excursions lasted about an hour. We had expected to be on the go for most of the day. The rest of the trip got better. Our favorite was the bike tour in Breisch, Germany. I don't know if other boats do this, but we really loved having an option for an active tour. The other tours are for gentle/slow walkers and regular folks. Many of the guests are past 70 yrs old and we are quite a bit younger. We would have been frustrated if we had gone any slower on our tours. The staff greets you back on the boat with a flavored water or tea drink along with a warm, moist towel to wipe your hands or face. There are many examples of pampering by the crew. We are not that fancy, but I think a lot of the folks had money and expected that type of treatment. As the days went by, most of the 160 guests visited with each other. It's easy to make new friends with a small boat. About 62 of us continued on with the land package. We spent two days in Lucerne and two days in Zurich. I think Lucerne was our favorite town. The local tour guides were very good. We were given Quiet Voxes to use in order to hear the guides. Those were great. Our cruise director had a daily meeting every afternoon to brief us on what we would do the next day. He also published a daily newsletter. Every detail was carefully planned and guides and buses appeared on time for all excursions. A few options were not that great, but if you don't like something, go off on your own. The on board evening entertainers were OK. Most of the time, I was too tired to listen very long. They were not the caliber you would see on a bigger boat, but that's OK. Read Less
