I want to start by saying that I cruised on the Spirit 2 years ago in the Mediterranean and loved the ship so much I wanted to cruise again in the Caribbean. I specifically chose this cruise because I was so impressed with everything about the ship. I'm not sure what has happened over the last two years but I couldn't believe I was on the same ship. The food was not up to par. The meals we were served in the Garden and Windows were warm at best. The entertainment is mediocre at best. The service has really slipped and I'm sure that is due to the average guest pre-paying gratuities. Why would they go out of their way when their tip has already been paid? The most concerning thing for me was the sewer smell on the back of the ship. From day 1 the smell was so strong it would take your breath away. I honestly don't know how the guests with rooms on the back of the ship dealt with the smell for a week. When we docked in Tortola, the crew were washing the side of the ship and it stunk so bad another guest stopped me and asked if I thought they were recycling urine to use for cleaning. One morning the water coming out of my sink was dark brown. When I asked the room steward why that was happening, he looked like a deer caught in the headlights and took off to tell someone. I'm not sure if waste somehow backed up in the water system but we brushed our teeth with bottled water for the rest of the cruise. I stayed on the 5th floor of the ship. My stateroom had dirty socks in a drawer from the last cruise. The bed had a seam in the middle of the mattress pad and all the pillows were flat and lumpy. I had a daily devotional missing from my room the last night of the cruise. I can only hope the room steward wanted to read it and hopefully it will better his life in some way. I really couldn't believe that this was the same ship/staff that I cruised with 2 years ago. I have cruised many times in the past but this experience has probably hindered me from ever cruising again. I am definitely finished with Norwegian. Read Less

My family of four just returned from our week on the Spirit. We had inside cabin 5035, one of the extra big cabins featured on the Spirit. We booked this cruise more than a year before the sail date because of the great rate at the time. This is cruise 20+ for my wife and me, the kids have slightly fewer cruises under their belts. We have previously sailed with NCL on the Jewel. While the Spirit is a smaller ship without the bells and whistles of NCL's newer ships, we really liked her. There is a charm about a smaller ship that is refreshing. The ship handled the crowds very well most of the time. Occasionally Raffles buffet would get a little crowded. Mostly the problems with crowds there were from those who we call "wanderers" - people who don't know where they want to go and stop and spin around and then wander slowly toward something that catches his or her eye. Service was generally good. We ate in the main dining rooms on most nights (4 of the 7). The first night's dinner was not good, but the service was fine. The rest of the meals in the main dining rooms were generally pretty good. The service was only bad one night, the last night, when dinner took nearly twice as long as normal (we spent more time sitting waiting for the next course than we did eating the course when it finally arrived). On two nights we went to Shogun. We enjoyed the menu there very much. One night we "ate" at Raffles. We returned around 5:30ish from our St. Thomas excursion, got cleaned up, and decided to go to Raffles to eat rather than try anywhere else. That night every dish, it seemed, was a seafood dish. Most of the family are not seafood eaters, so that night's dinner was a bust. The biggest complaint about the entire trip was the unbelievable plumbing problems and sewage smells we faced on our floor. 5035 is on the starboard side forward. Exiting the elevators there on days 2-7 one was hit with the most outrageous smell of sewage, urine, ammonia, and an attempt to cover the smell with deodorizer. On top of that days 3-6 were marked by periods of a nonfunctional toilet. The kicker was the night that my wife woke too find waste from other toilets had backed up into ours. The smell in the bathroom was unbelievable. Guest services sent a "repairman" and a cabin steward at 3:15 am to "fix" and clean. The toilet never got fixed. We adopted a "flush before you lift the lid" policy to avoid the terror of the toilet contents. We received chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of wine for our trouble. I'd have rather had them fix what were clearly problems along the lines of plumbing in that section of the ship. Perhaps they cannot do anything about it. I don't know. But I would advise people to stay away from deck 5 forward just as a precaution. Despite those problems, we had a good time on this cruise. We enjoyed NCL more on this trip than we had previously on the Jewel. We would sail NCL again. Read Less

Stayed in an inside cabin on deck 6, no problems with room apart from finding the previous persons dirty socks and underwear in one drawer. After ringing guest services this was sorted immediately and the drawer was thoroughly cleaned, have read other reviews stating that there is only one electric socket, there was three in our room. It was American spring break the two weeks we were on board, so there was a lot of young people, who very much enjoyed themselves without causing any trouble. I found the young Americans very polite, a couple of times being asked something by a youngster and being called Sir on both occasions. Freestyle cruising is what they offer and that's what you get, if you want formal nights, choose a different cruise line, don't go on NCL then moan that it's not posh enough, as we heard a few people saying. It suited us perfectly, do what you want when you want. The food on board was pretty good, the buffet could get busy at times, the waiter service restaurants were nice, preferred the garden restaurant to windows, as there was no vibration from the engine. Could get a table for two no problem without booking, only once had to be given a pager, and by the time we had gone to the bar to get a drink, the pager was going off to return for a table. We had the ultimate beverage package included in our cruise, this was brilliant, there was a fantastic choice of lager, some not on the menu, including peroni, grolsh, Amstel and also available, Newcastle Brown Ale, Guinness, ciders. The wine was nice, lots of choice and top brand spirits, as long as a drink was cheaper than $15 it was included. The entertainment was pretty good, the dancers and singers put on a good show, it was a shame they only had a one week rota though, as we were on for two weeks the shows are the same, luckily we had seen a review on here telling us this, so spread out seeing the shows. I was unlucky enough to try out the facilities in the medical treatment room, the staff in there are very good, but the charges are eye watering to say the least, hope insurance pays out. Embarkation and disembarkation were pretty good, just be aware of one thing, the latest time off the ship is 9.15 with transfer back to the airport, we were at the airport for 10.30, the Manchester flight is not until 19.45 and check in at the airport does not open until 13.30. We shared a taxi with another couple and went to downtown Disney, Virgin have a check in desk open there from 10.30, we checked in for an extra $10 per person and spent the rest of the day there. At around $70 taxi fare each way this is not a cheap way to spend your last day, but beats sitting in the airport waiting for check in to open, before going out somewhere. All in all had a great time and are looking forward to going on the same ship around the Canary Islands at new year. Read Less

Myself and my husband were cruise virgins. We booked this to mark our 50th birthdays, so really wanted to celebrate this special occasion. Prior to our cruise I came across this website and read numerous reviews on the Spirit, some very bad, some very good! We decided that as this was our first time on a cruise, we would go with an open mind on what to expect! We were not disappointed. Yes the ship is getting old, but it was spotlessly clean and we noticed that the crew were constantly maintaining and cleaning during our stay. From the moment we arrived at Port Canaveral to check in, we were made to feel very welcome. The staff were an absolute credit to the cruise line. The atmosphere on board amongst fellow cruiser's was very relaxed and sociable, from the Spring Breakers to the retired we felt that all mixed really well. In terms of entertainment on board, we felt that all genres were catered for. We really enjoyed Champagne Charlie's, the pianist Barry had us laughing all night long! A special mention must be made to 'Lester' the head barman at Henry's Bar. He was so attentive to all his customers not just ourselves, this was noticed by myself more so due to the fact I am in the industry myself and am very critical of the service received! The dining experience was 9 out of 10, the only disappointing meal we encountered was when we dined in the Garden Room, the service was excellent but the food rather bland and tasted very mass produced. The speciality restaurants were superb and in particular I must recommend Cagney's Steak Grill, the food was delicious and service superb. At this point I must point out the service supplied by Enriquo (Rico) a waiter at Cagney's who went out of his way to give us tips on how to make the most out of our time aboard! Excursions; Costa Maya Mexico Booked with an independent tour operator, Native Choice. Chose to do the Maya reality tour which involved a trip to the ruins, then a lunch in a Mayan village learning to cook Tortillas. A really lovely tour in a relaxed manner, the tour guide was very informative and flexible, arranged the tour to avoid the crowds. Georgetown Grand Cayman Chose The Trolley Roger Tour, booked through the cruise line! This was absolute disorganised chaos! Got ashore and waited for an hour, to be told that they were still waiting for another 20 people before they started the tour. We informed the guide that we would go get a drink in a nearby bar whilst waiting, she informed us she would come and get us when ready. We had our drink and went back to the meeting point only to be told that the tour had left without us!! Was informed that we could go on another in hours time, this we declined as we were fed up of waiting. This left a really sour note on the cruise for myself as this was an island I was really looking forward to. Ochos Rios Jamaica Booked through an independent tour guide Karandas Tours. Chose to do the river tubing, Dunns River climb and the Cool Running's bob sled. Had an absolute ball, from the moment our guide collected us to the time he dropped us off. Nothing was too much trouble and we got to see parts of the island that other tours do not venture to. Highly recommend this! Grand Stirrup Cay The cruise lines private island, absolutely beautiful, went jet skiing which was brilliant, then relaxed on the pristine beaches. A lovely way to end a cruise. Read Less

My wife and I just completed back to back E W Caribbean on the NCL Spirit. This was our 19th cruise. Previously who've cruised: RCL (8) Carnival (5) NCL (4) Celebrity (2) Ship: Overall condition of this ship is very good. Clean and convenient to navigate. Asian theme throughout. There does seem to be a small amount of deck space available by the pool. If you want a chair been up before 8:30 on sea days. Dining: Our package included free specialty dining so I will review each of those options. We ate 4 times in the main dining rooms. Food was quite good, (not great), and service was "spotty". One evening we had excellent service but otherwise allow two hours minimum for dinner in one of the main dining rooms. La Trattoria: This is the best food we had on this ship. Chicken Parm and Meatballs are excellent. The service was some of the worst we experienced. Two courses takes two hours? One of the nights there were about 10 people in the restaurant. Le Bistro: Food was above average and service was excellent. Cagney's: Again poor service. Two hours seems to be the norm on this ship. One tip, order any beef less done than normal. I didn't think the beef was very good but my wife thought it was fantastic. Personal preference I guess. Shogun: Free with some items as an extra charge like sushi. Very good Chinese food. Our service was excellent. Entertainment: NCL has to seriously do something about the entertainment. Not to be too harsh but the production shows we saw were like an SNL spoof of a cruise line show. A comedian each week and they were OK. Again that would be personal preference. Lots of activities throughout the ship. What appeared the most fun was the "Sing it if you know it". Good time. Casino was packed week one and less crowded week two. Seems like it might be kind of small of this size ship. Fitness center seemed small but there was hardly anyone in there. Ports: Key West: We did the Key Lime Bike Tour. Really enjoyed it. Really good way to get an overview of Key West. Grand Cayman: Did a snorkel beach combo tour. Pretty standard stuff. Lots of fun other than the panic attack when I remembered I couldn't swim. I would skip that part. Ocho Rios: Tubing your down the apple river. Great time! We had a great group and guides. Highly recommend. Nassau: We actually walked to Mass. Very easy to get to the Cathedral which is about a 10-15 minute walk from port. Felt safe and lots of shopping opportunities on the way back. St Maarten: Did a horseback riding tour which included a trail and beach water ride. Lots of fun. If you are envisioning galloping through the surf then you need to lessen your expectations. You ride out to about waist high and then the horses poop like crazy from what I could tell. We wanted to go to Maho Beach to see the airplanes but didn't have time. If you want to go there, it looked like there's a shuttle from the cruise port. I think it was $20 per person each way. Not sure of the price. St Thomas: Nothing booked and as usual it is a shopping stop. Good place to do that. Read Less

Port Canaveral is great for embarking on what should be a wonderful cruising week! The NCL Spirit is an adequate vessel, although it could use many updates and refurbishings. The specialty restaurants are very good, but not quite up to par with some of the newer ships. Food at the buffet was adequate, but almost always cold. Seating was no problem. I can only speak for our room steward, who was the worst one I've ever experienced on any cruise line! We had no idea who he was until the 2nd night out! Continuous requests for ice with no results, dirty glassware/dishes remained in room for 2 days. Although we were supposed to have pool towels provided in our cabin, we never received any, even after several requests. The excursions were great; disembarkation at 2 of our stops was a nightmare! Long, long lines with over an hour wait to disembark, cutting shore time down by over an hour. Entertainment was good, but certainly not even close to that of the larger ships. Most of the other scheduled activities are the same as the other NCL ships, so no surprises there. Not sure what happened to their famous "White Hot Party"........very little said about it. All in all, we made the best of it and had a good time. For transportation to and from the Cocoa/Cocoa Beach area, Happy Hour Shuttle is a must!! The drivers were the absolute best, and the ride is individual......no stopping to pick up/drop off other folks! Highly recommended!!! Read Less

We had been on Carnival the last five cruises and had been a bit disappointed with the crew energy on the last one. It was the Fantasy, and we were aware about it's age. The Spirit is a similar ship, small and a few years on her, but the crew was outstanding. Yes if you look hard you can find old carpet or a rust spot or two, and we were concerned with all the negative reviews. The energy and attitude was the best we had ever encountered on a cruise. The shows were better than what we had seen on Carnival and the Cruise Director GIO was great. When we did encounter some issues with an excursion, not directly NCL fault, the excursion staff was understanding and gave us a credit with their apologies. We ate mostly in The Gardens Main Dining. Found a waiter we Herald, and asked for him each night, super service. Only issue came on disembarkation, signed up for early as we had a long drive, they lost a cart with luggage and many people had to wait in the terminal. That was the only negative on a 7 day enjoyable vacation. We are signed up for another NCL cruise, hopefully the staff will also be as great as the Spirit's was. Read Less

We have been cruising for over 10 years and are Silver Lattitude members on Norwegian. This was our first experience on the Spirit and we were very disappointed. Getting on-board was easygoing no waiting and very quick check in. The boat itself is older and shows it's age. There are places where the carpet is worn bare, rust visible here and there, and a general worn appearance, but they do keep it clean. We decided that since this cruise was 7 days with 2 full days at sea that we would upgrade to a balcony. That was a mistake. The room was not impressive, the bed was hard as a brick, the balcony was so dirty I wouldn't go out there until the porter addressed it, the bathroom tile was cracked and stained, but the worst thing was the sewer smell. The bathroom stank and sometimes the smell seeped out under the door into the room. I spoke to the porter, I called housekeeping, but no one was able to do anything to fix the problem. At first they sent people in to fix it, but after 2 days they would just come in and spray a deodorant whenever I called. The day we came back to find the carpet wet and had to call them about that. We were lucky, the people across the hall had a full on flood. Not sure where they moved them, but they had to pull everything out of that room and had fans blowing the wet smell all over. Rough seas made thing even worst because the lack of rest rooms in the public areas meant folks were throwing up all over before they finally put some bags out. Plus we had to skip a port so we were at sea an extra day with all the nasty smells. After all that they comped us $100 towards our bill. Not even per person. Never sailing Norwegian again. Read Less

Living in the Mid East Coast USA, a Caribbean cruise always beats snowy February. NCL's "Free-Style Cruising" is the best way to go if you like a casual vacation-having to pack evening dresses and suits is not our idea of relaxing. During the 2 weeks we were aboard we had some rough sea and missed the Cayman Islands but overall had a grand time. Enjoyed the "game shows" "Not so Newly Wed," "55 or Less," and karaoke contest-things we would never do/watch at home, but we were on vacation. We flew into Orlando and used the greatest little service called "Go Port Canaveral." They provided transportation from the airport to hotel, hotel to pier and pier to airport. They make all the necessary arrangements including hotel reservations for a very reasonable fee. Embarkation was easily accomplished as was disembarkation. As gold Latitudes members we had priority times for both. We were in a forward porthole cabin which gave us a little more room than an inside cabin but was still economical. We have found the porthole or obstructed view cabins to be a good choice both monetarily and for added space. Everything in life has the potential to disappoint and like most things, a cruise is mostly what you make of it. Read Less

We just got back from our first week long cruise. It was my wife and I who are in our 30's as well as her parents. We have cruised twice before but on 3 night cruises. We read all the negative feedback and I am happy to say this crew has figured their stuff out and it was a great time. My wife has celiac disease (gluten allergy) and we told Norwegian about it prior to leaving. We had no idea they were going to go way out of their way to make her comfortable. They assigned Jonathan to us for every meal to make sure she could navigate the menu and order ahead of time in case they didn't have what she wanted. It took so much of the worry out of ordering food and her getting sick. All of the food was great especially at Windows and Le Bistro. Le Bistro was the highlight of the trip, lobster, muscles and steak were amazing. They also made us a small cake for our anniversary. The buffet at Raffles was pretty good, but still a buffet. Windows was always fantastic and there really wasn't much of a need for us to spend the money on a dining package. Drinks were good and service was generally quick. There were times it could get slow (beginning of dinner) but if you brought your own drink then it was never a problem. The bartenders were all skilled and knew how to make the drinks we wanted. It was a much older crowd than we expected, most were in their 60's. We were told since it was a smaller ship that is normal. So the nightlife catered to that a bit and although there was some fun dance parties, they ended early even if the staff wanted to continue. There just wasn't enough nigh owls to have much of a night life after midnight. Still it was a good cruise and enough areas to hang out and listen to music. There wasn't a ton of kids (maybe 20-30) but it seemed like they were always in the hot tubs and main pool. They have a kids area but it seemed liked it didn't get used that much. So that was a bit of a disappointment. Overall it was a great cruise and I would recommend it to anyone but young singles. We met a few and there just wasn't enough of them to make it a fun time for that crowd. Read Less

Visited Key West, George Town, Grand Cayman, Ochee Rios, Jamaica and Great Stirrup (but didn't dock as the weather was bad) This is our second cruise but our first with Norwegian Spirit. The first 3 nights at the Windows Main dining room was not organised as it was not the usual planned meal times. You could eat whenever you wanted. However, most of the 2000 people wanted to eat at the same time! Or it felt like this anyway. There was a long wait for a table, drinks and food (which arrived cold). The quality of the food was very good but the menu hardly changed. We don't eat meat so it was either fish or vegetarian every night. Couldn't get into the speciality restaurants unless you wanted to eat at 10pm. We do like to sit down and be waited on but because there was always a different waiter in the main dining room it didn't feel special. I also got the impression that there either wasn't enough staff or the waiters had their favourite people to wait on. I certainly felt dissatisfied as others were treated better, it felt, but this is just my opinion. Raffles Buffet: The food was good and hot and there was plenty of selection. A never ending selection of free coffee, tea, water and juices available. Activities: Good selection - quizzes, bingo, name that tune , line dancing, music etc.. Entertainment: very good and there was variety but it personal choice Spa: Had a hot stone full body massage. Tina (Yuen Chen) was excellent but it was expensive Port & shore excursions: Too expensive for the amount of time you get on the island. Because of weather we didn't stop at Great Stirrup. Embarkment was super quick and efficient. Disembarkment was very quick and efficient but we did do the easy walk off with our luggage Summary - There was a few groups on the cruise and the night club was closed every night due to a private party. This also happened on other parts of the ship which was a pain. Not worth doing if you are travelling all the way from UK in January as I thought it was expensive for the service we received. The weather cannot be relied on and may have sea days instead of docking at islands. Read Less

There was not many young children on the ship, most of the people were older 65+. The food in the main dinning rooms (windows & gardens) was just OK nothing really good! Kept waiting for the meals to get better but they never did. The food in the main buffet was just as good as the dinning room. The islands were the best part of the cruise (ST. We booked this cruise because the timing was right and the price was reasonable. Plus, Norwegian offered a choice of free stuff as incentives. We chose the free beverage package (which was actually not free) figuring that with sufficient alcohol we could overlook many of the negatives that we read about in the reviews here. This worked like a charm but we still seem to have hangovers nearly a week post-cruise. We landed in Orlando and took one of the local shuttles to the cruise ship terminal. We found the drive to the terminal to be relatively long and boring compared to getting to other terminals such as Fort Lauderdale and New Orleans. The people behind the counter at the terminal seemed to be scrambling a bit; however, the boarding process overall was smooth. Once aboard, we went to the cafeteria for a snack and were greeted by staff with spray bottles saying "washy washy" , a phrase which became increasingly annoying throughout the cruise. The ship is a little beat up here and there. On Deck 12's starboard side we could smell traces of the sewage that people mentioned in other reviews but it was faint. A lot of washrooms were out of order and the toilets in the common areas tended to flush while in use which was disconcerting. In our cabin which was below the Blue Lagoon restaurant there was a lot of noise most nights. We assumed they were doing repair work possibly to the plumbing system. My wife complained three times but to no avail. As mentioned in other reviews, staff follow-up on complaints is weak. The staff service was adequate, although notably lacking in terms of bar service and prompt cleanup near the pool deck. We generally approached the bar for service when it was not busy and luckily found one server (Luka) who was quite good and diligent about cleaning up messes before they got worse. Other servers tended to wander around fairly aimlessly and there were not many of them. Contrast this to other cruises where staff are constantly showing up promoting drinks. We assumed the lack of waiter service near the pool deck was due to a lot of drinks being handed out as part of the free beverage package. In general, we agree with other reviewers' complaints about service and cleaning issues but mostly it was minor stuff. Some of the staff were borderline rude and it did seem as if there was underlying unhappiness among many crew members. The comment in another review about staff possibly not being paid made me wonder if this was not the case and who holds Norwegian to account on that. Some of the staff seemed almost morose and borderline intransigent, it was weird. Some staff appeared to be neophytes left to do jobs with much direction or assistance. Normally I would expect to see an experienced worker nearby to direct beginners. The food quality ranged from mediocre to pretty good. Variety was lacking particularly at the Raffles buffet at breakfast. One staff member assigned to selling fresh orange juice became upset at me when I picked up a whole orange from in front of his display. I put the orange back. How lame to be hassling someone over an orange. The poolside barbecue was not bad but my wife got a raw hamburger and I found most items were cold by the time I sat down to eat them. The ports were pretty good. We just drank in the morning and went to the beaches. In Nassau we just walked over to what seemed like a locals' beach and did a little swimming in the ocean. At St. Thomas, the tendering process was slow and we just managed to spend a few hours at Magens Bay beach then shop a bit. The beach was nice but given that they charge admission to it, we thought the facilities could use an upgrade. On Tortola, we ended up a Long Bay which was a fair distance away from the ship and not crowded. It was pretty nice but did not really wow us. The restaurant there advertised a lobster special on the chalkboard, but there was no lobster to be found once we were seated, so we got up and left. The word lame comes to mind again. The two day trip back to Orlando was a bit long and they could have used a fourth stop. There is not a great deal to do on the ship compared to large ships that have miniature golf, climbing walls, ice rinks, etc. We attended one show with aerialists and a magician. It was okay, pretty good considering that the performers had to work on somewhat rough seas. But the show was a bit helter-skelter - slightly disjointed in terms of a consistent them. It was like a light-duty Cirque to Soleil thing. Mostly we just drank, ate, watched movies and slept on the return trip to Orlando. The sleep was a bit uncomfortable at times as due to rough seas the ship rocked enough to make us a bit queasy now and then. I also occasionally had the feeling that in the event of an emergency, there would only be one escape route from our cabin and we could get trapped. We could only use one elevator or staircase to get to our cabin, a lot of areas are blocked on the port side or cut off across the ship. Disembarkation was very quick as we wheeled our luggage off with us. There is a big ramp in the terminal on the way out, so we did not need to take an elevator. Going through US Customs was smooth, there was barely a line-up. Overall, we had a pretty good time. With a smaller ship, there were fewer people to trip over and fewer jerks on board. But Norwegian should take heed of the negative comments in other reviews, they are not inaccurate. I doubt that we will cruise with them again anytime soon. But then, Norwegian does not seem have Carnival's problems as yet so I would not rule Norwegian out completely. Read Less

This was our first Norwegian cruise after close to 15 other cruises on various lines. We traveled with another couple (with in excess of 25 cruises under their belts). We booked this one as the timing was right for us along with the excellent price/incentives we got. Especially as Canadians (that dollar is brutal right now!!). Before leaving I read the most recent reviews of the few weeks leading up to our departure and they had me VERY nervous I gotta say! All for not!!!! We had a wonderful time and really found very little fault with anything. Certainly nothing to an extent that it could possibly spoil our time. We got on and off this ship painlessly and quickly. Yes, the ship is older. So what? We knew that going in as should anyone booking it! You had to look hard for signs of aging, they weren't screaming at you as if it was falling apart. Staff were painting and cleaning often and dilligently. I was on the brand new Regal Princess last January, so yes if you want to compare it to that, that's just not fair. We actually found this ship to be much more intimate and less crowded than the Regal. It's a lovely smaller ship with all the amenities you'd need. A pretty atrium with a very old fashioned feel to it. The food was very good and in some cases above average. We ate most nights in the Garden dining room, but also tried Windows. Tapenyaki was EXCELLENT and actually exceeded my expectations. The portions were so big, I couldn't even eat half of the excellent steak!! We had the wings/fish and chips one night, also good. The pool deck food at lunch was our go to when on board. Two levels to choose from, top deck just burgers, hotdogs and fries kind of thing, down below the larger one with paella as well as other meat choices and salads. The last day there, there were ribs that were fabulous! Raffles buffet for breakfast was more than adequate although busy on port days. We had a balcony room, cabin 10066. No complaints. Our room steward "Johnson" was wonderful. Attentive and always on the ball. Bathroom was dated, but clean. I've read some complaints on that area, but ours truly was ok. Adequate storage space although weird angular cubbies. AC was great, never turned on the tv (why on earth would I?)The Galaxy Lounge and Henry's Pub were our favourites. Henry's before dinner. Galaxy Lounge after. We tried to do our dinner around the schedule of the various interactive games going on, trivia, karaoke etc. My husband participated in one of them, some kind of trivia survivor kind of thing. Funny! The 80's show on the last night in that lounge was awesome! We found the overall service everywhere on the ship to be overwhelmingly positive. No grumpy servers, no cold food. None of that. My one and only complaint was St. Thomas port. I've been there 7 or 8 times, and it's one of my favourites. Unfortunately for whatever reason the time there is way too short, not arriving until noon?? Then we had to tender (Never tendered there before) and it was painful! I had booked a very expensive flyboarding event (not through NCL) based on the scheduled arrival time of 11 a.m. which was in the itinerary. That was then changed to noon arrival (flyboarding at 1 p.m.) and then we had to get tender tickets! ugh.....fortunately we managed to get off after talking to the cruise director and only be 30 minutes late. So 1:30 before you got on land??! People talked about pouring rain and funny we were only 10 minutes from the port and only had some sprinkles! :-) In Tortola we did the Van Jost afternoon. OMG, was to die for beautiful! Although the trip there was really expensive at $200 US/two (for us as Canadians especiallly!!) as it really was only a basic "taxi" service, it was still worth it though. The Soggy Dollar bar/painkillers and the fabulously gorgeous beach were worth it. A must do. Probably my favourite day. All in all we had a great time and I wouldn't hesitate to go back on this ship. Although I would choose a different itinerary as I'm not a HUGE fan of too many sea days and Nassau is really a stop I could care less to see again. Ignore the bad reviews....there are always people who will complain incessantly about anything and everything. We heard a few while on board, trust me! Read Less

We were a bit apprehensive about this ship before boarding....not very good reviews, older ship, smaller ship, etc. However, we were pleasantly surprised after boarding....the Spirit has a LOT of character. We loved everything about it! The decor is unusual, the Asian artifacts were interesting, the public spaces were inviting, the atrium is gorgeous! We mostly ate in the specialty restaurants (Cagney's, LeBistro, Trattoria), and all our meals were outstanding. We ate in the Asian restaurant once, and again, outstanding! We also dined in Windows twice (once with the captain, lucky us!!), and we were all pleased with our choices. We rarely ate in the buffet, because we had breakfast and lunch at Cagney's every day (VIP status), which was awesome. Every crew member/staff we interacted with were happy, helpful, and very friendly. No complaints there! (Except the cruise director....he was okay, nothing special). Our room steward was one of the best, and when someone was smoking a cigar on the balcony 2 rooms down from us, he promptly asked him to stop. Thank you! The itinerary was good, except for Nassau (been there too many times). We did have to tender in St. Thomas, because of so many ships in port that day, but tender operations seemed to go pretty smoothly (at least for us). It did rain hard after we got to shore, but stopped after maybe half an hour, so it was all good! Magen's Bay is a great beach, and large enough that it didn't seem too crowded with 6 ships in port. Tortola is one of our favorite ports, and going to the Baths is a must. The entertainment was excellent, except for the magician they had on board. His show was a bit cheesy, and some of the illusions were obvious. The Elements show was probably the best show, with the comedian a close second. The crew talent show was one of the best I've been to! Overall, we would definitely sail the Spirit again, and I think it has become our favorite NCL (smaller) ship. Just keep in mind it does not have all the bells and whistles of the newer ships, but there was never a moment when we felt bored. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. Port Canaveral is one of the best...they really have it down! We live about 30 minutes from there, so we are ecstatic that NCL is home porting there again in the winter months! Read Less

For a tour of the ship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Wh4VP6rHek . So this was the fourth time sailing with NCL, and as much as I love the whole Freestyle theme, I might try a more traditional cruise line for my next trip. This was the smallest ship I have been on, and a lot different than the NCL Breakaway, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7momJhjAIc) which I went on when it first came out. The nicest thing about this being a small ship was that it was easy and quick to walk from one place to another. But at the same time, the amenities that I might love were not necessarily there. There was a pool, but it was pretty small, and I had no intentions of venturing to the kids pool aft on the ship. Also, the fitness center (not that I used it or anything...) was really small and intimidating cause you could see through the windows looking right onto the pool. The speciality restaurants were also not always easy to find, and sometimes just in weird places (like the Italian restaurant which was in the buffet). Also, there was entertainment, but not many options at night because there were not a lot of clubs for variety because it was a small ship. And there were a lot of random smoking areas too unfortunately. HOWEVER, it is a very elegant ship, and the things that it did have were really nice. The Windows Main dining room was beautiful (although a little rumbly because it was right above the engines), the lights on the pool at night were very artistic, and the atrium (which is always a draw for me) was grand and exciting. Because it is an old ship, there were neat features like a card room and library that were well kept, a authentic wrap-around promenade and a casino that is bigger than most newer ships. At the same time, it meant that doors, bathrooms and other features were on the older side. NCL does a great job of keeping up to date though, so while some features were not new, the Stardust theater had innovative lights and sets, and the company is clearly maintaining the main attributes of the ship. THE HIGHLIGHT of the ship was the galaxy of the stars lounge. At night, there was always a game show, but during the day there were amazing views of the sea (and a look-in area on the bridge). The lounge was great for activities but also just kicking back and reading. Read Less

I have only ever been on Carnival cruises before. I was excited to try something new. I was very disappointed in this cruise. This was an old ship but I have cruised on old ships with Carnival before and never had these problems. There are only 2 electrical outlets in the cabin. One simply did not work and one didn't have enough power to heat my curling/straightening appliances. I spoke with another girl who said her room was the same. Any girl with frizzy hair knows they don't want to have a hair situation for 7 nights straight on their vacation. But that's what I had. Our steward missed cleaning our room on a few occasions. He would take the extra pillows we grabbed from out of the closet and do who knows what with them so that we just couldn't have extra pillows. He replaced the water in the fridge once. I had to call room service or go upstairs anytime I wanted water. The staff in general wasn't as friendly as Carnival employees. The entire 4th floor where our cabin was smelled like sewage. We had to call twice because our toilet wouldn't flush. And we encountered the same problem the day we were leaving the ship. The food was only borderline ok. Stale bread. Service was terrible and waited long amounts of time in the Windows restaurant to receive food. On Christmas night, we waited over an hour for our entrees and finally gave up and left. We heard a rumor that this was the ship that does the training for new employees which makes a lot of sense. The only things I can say that were better than Carnival were that Norwegian does offer really good deals in terms of free beverage packages so I think that the other cruise lines better jump on board with that soon because even though this cruise wasn't the greatest, I will still prob pick Norwegian next time due to the value. I will just pick a different ship and hope for a better outcome! Read Less

We were on our first ever cruise and we were not dissapointed! We travelled from North Yorkshire in England to Orlando, stayed in Timeshare at legacy vacation club (which we would highly recommend and is available for non timeshare owners too) for a week. We joined the cruise at Port Canavaral which was easy to find and had some amenities/restaurants nearby in case you arrive early. The Spirit looked resplendent, all shiny white in the sun which was a great start we thought! We tried everything once whilst on board apart from some of the restaurants. The shows were great and we thoroughly enjoyed them all - apart from the magician whom to be truthful shocked us at how sexist and masoginistic he appeared in this day and age - maybe that's just being British but we don't think so to be honest. The singers, dancers and staff show were fabulous, hard working and very talented. Our balcony cabin was ok but not wonderful. The initial problems we encountered were sorted immediately however. The shore excursions were fab but the private island was EXCEPTIONAL! We wanted to stay there for a week at least! It would have been lovely to have had an evening there under the stars and all lit up for a party night we thought. We liked Mexico and had a lovely time shopping and at a beach bar. We did not like Jamaica and were back on board within the hour. However, Grand Cayman was so lovely we've booked a week there this year! The thing we remember most was the exceptional high standards of hygiene around the food - even on the private island - we were very very impressed and have told everyone! We had the drinks package included and even though I am not much of a drinker I still liked the convenience of it and do not think of it in monetary terms as much as ease of use. I'm sure my husband drank our share by himself! The wonderful staff in the English style pub kept us well supplied with Guiness and superb service. We kept wondering why our wet towels were being folded into animal shapes even though they were wet through and used...we didn't realise that if we didn't throw them in the bottom of the shower the staff would not apply common sense! Got it now though! We loved the barbeques on deck which we thought were just what a cruise should be like. Disembarkation was easy and efficient. We took our own bags off as is common in England when using ferry services to Europe so was first nature to us. Just a note to say that though the head office think they can cater for special diets (I really cant have dairy and its not a fad but makes me very ill) the staff on board have no clue whatsoever! Not even the diet adviser who still after a week was saying things like you can have that off the menu no problem - they only use cream not milk or I thought you could have it because its plain yoghurt and so on and so on! There were zero deserts for me either by the way and I did get a bit fed up with the same melon/ chopped fruit for desert each night. Like I said when my husband was getting very mad about this - I didn't go on the cruise for the food I went for the places! Read Less

Mainly the food / service was the worst. On a regular basis had stone cold food. Took 1/2 hour in main dining room for egg orders. At least they they warned us. Cagneys high end steak house took 3.5 hours the first night to have dinner. Staff was nice but for that premium charge I have come to expect more. I have taken about 10 NCL cruises in the past and someone needs to have a secret shopper sail this ship. I mean is it so hard to get a burger with some warmth or fries that are at least warm? Had cold fries at 4 different dining venues. I am saddened about the misses and i have never heard so much complaining from the people around us. I am not a prima donna but i am seen a steady slide in quality of service. I agree the ship is beautiful in a lot of area's but mainly bar inconsistency and food quality problems take a lot of joy out of the experience. Wake up NCL> Read Less

Food was lukewarm most days in Raffles Court, especially breakfast. Shortages and outages were the norm. It was some better in the other "complimentary" restuarants but not much. At Cagneys (Specialty Restaurant) we ordered stakes and I can do about as well at Golden Corral. When I tried on three ocassions to speak to the guy in charge there he would grab his phone when approached and get on it. Don't think he wants to answer for conditions. The Housekeeping staff was excellent. The ship itself is very nice though one fellow was complaining about maintenance. Embarkation and Disembarkation made one wonder if this was the first time the ships crew had experienced it. BarBQue held on the 12th floor Tivoli pool and the fellow in front of me told the staff he had stood in line in Army mess halls and eaten better with less confusion. Talking to folks in different lines on the ship and asking" How is your cruise" almost always got remarks like mine above. It was like a Virus of discontent. One Chinese lady told me "I got social media " after she complained while in the elevators. Read Less

This was our 7th cruise with NCL. My husband was in the poker tournament. Embarkation was a breeze. The casinos at CE line was the biggest because of the poker tournament but it moved quickly. The ship is the oldest I believe but it was very clean with good use of space. My husband and I enjoyed listening to karaoke at Henry's pub. My adult children enjoyed champagne Charlie's when they had the singer Barry. He was a bit dirty at Times but the younger and even though older drinking crowd it just loved him. We ate twice at windows and garden and had nice experiences at both. We enjoyed going to the raffles buffet for breakfast for eggs made to order at the omelette station. We also hit up the buffet for late-night snacks. We had the specialty dining package. We loved the Bistro. The food and service were fantastic. A special shout out to Rhea Who went above and beyond the call of duty to make our dining experience so wonderful and special. We loved her. We also ate at Cagney's twice. The food was great both times. The service was slow on day one. Our second visit we had a fantastic waiter named Higinio. He also went above and beyond to give us a fantastic service. Our last night we ate at the Teppan-Yaki. Our waitress was very good and the chef Emmanuel was fantastic as well. Our only bad dining experience was at the Italian restaurant la Trattoria. Our server, who I will not name on this site, was irritable and the rude. The service was terrible. She seemed like she hated her job. They were definitely understaffed in this restaurant. I would not want to go back to that restaurant again. The activities on the ship were fun. Something for everyone. Loved the Caribbean band that typically played by the pool The fitness area was small but OK. I don't know why they kept that room so darn hot though. My husband had a below average Swedish massage. He said she spent too much time on his feet. It sounded a little lazy to me. Even though I told my husband that The massage will be billed to with an 18% service gratuity fee- he said his therapist told him that was not the case and told him he should tip her. I thought that was very deceptive of her. The ports were very nice. We enjoyed costa Maya. We took a shuttle to Pez Quadro which is the fourth stop on the shuttle. I believe it was three dollars a person. The other stops all try to get you to get off at their beach resort. It was kind of a waste of time that could have been spent at the beach. The taxi back to the ship was only two or three dollars a person. Georgetown Grand Cayman we had plans to go with Ebanks water sports to go Jets game and to stingray city but unfortunately bad weather had to cancel our excursion. We really enjoyed the port anyway. It is clean and safe. We went outside our comfort zone in Ocho Rios Jamaica. We used Peat Taylor tours. We had a memorable experience going tubing and to the Bluewater hole. My kids use the same tour group and went to Dunn's Falls and horseback riding. Stirrup Cay Bahamas was beautiful but unfortunately it was a raining and stormy day. We had a rocky tender going back to the ship. We just got off the ship today and just embarkation went perfectly. We like to walk our luggage off the ship. We did not do well in the casino. This was our eighth cruise with our last seven being on NCL. The walls in the cabin seemed thinner than The others. Unfortunately, we heard everything our neighbors were saying and doing. It sounds like they have the headboard on the bed back to back. Maybe we became a little spoiled after we went on some of the newer NCL ships like the epic, breakaway, getaway, etc. I am looking forward to checking out the new ship the Escape. I also have the Hawaiian cruise on my bucket list. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we were very excited to finally go on one. We embarked and thats where the excitement ended. We were charged a daily service charge, but never received any service. It was very disappointing to sit at the Raffles restaurant and never get any acknowledgement from any of the staff. I had to walk outside and stand in the bar line just to get a Pepsi that i am paying for with the drink package. The ship only has one pool for adults, and is crammed all the time. When we arrived in Ocho Rios, we were docked at what looked like some type of commercial abandoned mill. we had to pay 20 bucks just to get onto a shuttle to go to town which was 2 miles away. there was another NCL ship at the main dock, but they didnt have to pay any shuttle charges do to the fact they could just walk into town. No discounts, no refunds, no service! The guest service desk employees had no personality, and didnt smile and greet anyone. It seemed to me that if you had an issue, you were bugging them. We are very disappointed in our cruise experience. Food quality, service, smell of sewer, lack of customer service, and they way you are treated are the reasons we will not book on NCL again. Don't know where to even begin, let me start by saying this was my second time on the Spirit. Our first experience was excellent, we had no reservations about going again and were excited to experience it for a second time. Boy were we in for a big surprise! It all started when we had to report on deck after boarding for the muster, I seriously can't count on both hands how many times they shuffled us and the couple with us around the deck! It was extremely unorganized and multiple people kept telling us to move here then someone would come along and push us back to another side then another person will come and put us back where the last person just moved us from and so on and so forth it became a huge joke amongst everybody that was in the group watching what was going on. I think most of us passengers knew more what was going on than the crew at that point. After the drill we headed directly to the bar on deck behind raffles. We were the first to arrive and sit at the bar and still could not get bar service! The bartenders looked very frazzled before people even started showing up, it took forever to get a drink even when I was sitting in the middle of the bar and told both bartenders several times I needed a drink when they were done and they just kept running circles around each other. There was no personal interaction with either bartender and as many times as I tried to get their attention so they knew I needed a drink, other people were having to order for me because I couldn't get waited on. The first thing I do when I get on ship is look for my own bartenders someone who will take care of me and will have fun on the job. Aside from pre paying my gratuities I had a $50 bill in my pocket waiting to find the right bartender and neither was worthy of even a dollar! It never did get any better over the course of the week, I can't believe there was not even any poolside bar service I have never seen anything like it in my life. The food was absolutely horrible, no matter what area, what time or what day we went. Based on our last experience on the Spirit, we were looking very forward to the fabulous food and service that came with it, what a huge disappointment. The buffet did not have the best of selections like last time, the food was cold, forget about getting cooked to order eggs in the morning unless you wanted to wait 40 minutes. We are not picky eaters either and we felt we couldn't even get a decent meal in the main dining areas. We did have good service one evening in the Garden and that was it, the rest was mediocre at best and one night in the Garden we got the worst food and worst service we've ever received in our lives! The server was borderline rude and very disinterested in being there and taking care of us. She was more concerned with what was going on around her and the rest of the dining room, which resulted in her not even taking our drink orders until we asked, after our food came in which every single order she had screwed up because she wasn't paying attention, then screwed up our drink order and then never came back again. Staff in general amongst the ship didn't seem to know much about what was going on nor have an understanding for anything you ask them. The tendering was absolutely horrible and very disorganized. My husband went to go get a ticket poolside at 6:30 a.m. to get off the ship. We did not have an excursion planned and when he got there the guy told him he was the first one to receive a ticket to get off the ship. However when it came time to tender to the island, it took almost 3 hours. We lost almost half of our time on the island because nobody knew what they were doing while trying to get us off the ship. Forget trying to get a good cup of coffee anywhere on the ship it was like mud from the buffet to the main restaurants to the Blue Lagoon. The cabin coffee was the best bet and was still just ok, however it was an inconvenience to get your dessert to go and have to go back to the room to make your own coffee. One night we went back and had no water when trying to fill our coffee pot. I called the front desk to let them know there was no running water in our room and she told me that there was an emergency and they had to shut the water off and hopefully they would have it fixed soon. Hearing there was an emergency when I'm in the middle of the ocean is not what I wanted to hear she could have said there was a plumbing issue or something... Not tell me there was an emergency! When we finally got running water again about an hour later, nasty, smelly black sludge kept filling our toilet. I think about every public bathroom throughout the ship that I went into had out of order signs and them and as the week progressed more and more restrooms were out of order! We went to the pool party at night and no one was there except a handful of staff and a couple of passengers. We were excited to party the night away and forget about the first half of the week and even that was a dud. We lost and went to the galaxy, and had a drink or two and thought when we went back to the pool it should be hopping by then... what a joke when we went back out a little later no one was there. Unlike our last booking on this ship, the bars were closed around the pool and there was no food being served, it is no wonder how do you have a pool party with no food or drink? The white hot party was a bust due to the weather they have since moved it out on the pool deck instead of inside the galaxy of stars. Why they moved it outside is beyond me they sell a crap load of t-shirts get their money and then have nothing going on due to inclement weather. All they want is money money money and give nothing in return. Very disappointed to see that they are now charging for room service also. We waited all week in anticipation for the big midnight chocolate buffet, that never happened! The only positive thing I have to say about the cruise was our room stewardess, she was very sweet and attentive and always had our room tended too, restocked, freshened up and a fresh towel animal waiting on our bed for us every evening. I was happy to give her everyone else's tips! :-) So disappointed in this ship on so many levels, I could go on and on but I wont. It really does not take much to satisfy or make us happy but I feel after all the money that was spent on this cruise, it was a huge disappointment and you couldn't pay me enough to go on it again! Everyone we talked to on the ship seemed to feel the same, way to go NCL! We set extra aside to put a deposit down on our next cruise while on board, you know that didn't happen!!! I know other cruise lines that would be more than happy to take our money and give us a great vacation. Please, if you choose to sail Norwegian do not go on the Spirit! Read Less
