We are frequent cruisers with Royal Caribbean. After this cruise, we are Diamond in their loyalty program. This was our second time on the Anthem. We chose this cruise because love sailing out of NJ (less than a 1.5 hour drive for us) and like the longer cruises. We had two connecting cabins - one for my husband and I and one for our 3 kids (11, 9, 9).

We have enjoyed fantastic cruise adventures in the past but always on other cruise lines. This was our first cruise with Royal Caribbean. Here we list our pros and cons.
Pros:
* New, beautifully appointed ship
* Excellent staff, particularly Wayne/Xiang (American Icon Restaurant) and Owen and Cindy (our stateroom attendants.)

Getting on the ship was quick, cabins available at 1pm. Booked a group trip with 16 people, 8 cabins on the 6th deck (obstructed view balcony). Arrive in our room to a modern room, great storage, limited outlets, but spacious. We have chosen the room with a balcony and were hoping that it would be comfortable. It definitely wasn't. The sofa was extremely uncomfortable and we couldn't sleep properly. We chose this cruise because we needed a boat that went out of the NY NJ area so we wouldn't have to fly to another destination. We were a group of 7: Myself, my husband, my two sons ages 3 and 6 and my inlaws. I have been on many other cruises, and this was my 3rd on Royal Caribbean. I got married on a RC cruise ship (Adventure) in 2004. I was disappointed. While I had a great time vacationing with my family, and the cruise itinerary was great, I was very disappointed in many aspects of the cruise.

The staff seemed miserable and acted like they were doing me a favor when they provided any service to my family... other than our 2 regular nightly waiters and about 2 bartenders from the pub, service across the ship was awful. I cannot comprehend some of the bad reviews about this ship. The ship is amazing, clean, well maintained and tons of amenities. I’ve sailed twice with RC before and I’ve sailed with celebrity and Norwegian. Anthem of the seas is now my favorite ship. The staff were amazing, goes above and beyond to please guests. Starting from Cape Liberty, the embarkation process was a nightmare. We spent over 2 hours in an Uber less than a mile from the ship trying to get to the terminal. There were 2 college-aged "Traffic Enforcers" who did not but let the traffic back up for miles. Once we got to the terminal everything finally began flowing smoothly with the exception of the overcrowded security lines.

PARKING: Getting to park at Cape Liberty in Bayonne was a major chore. After a 4.5 hour drive we ended up spending another hour trying to offload our bags and park just to get on the cruise ship. This was 4+ hours prior to our scheduled departure time. Getting on wasnt an issue, justt drop off and the parking.
