Saga Sapphire Cabins

This is not a ship filled with identical, prefabricated, production-line cabins manufactured off-site during the shipbuilding process. There is a bewildering range of 25 categories, from standard inside singles on Decks 5, 6, 7 and 8 to the six royal suites, which occupy the forward end of Deck 9. Also at the top end of the scale is the Owner's Suite, aft on Deck 10, which is flanked by two junior suites. Three further rooms are categorised as suites, although they do not have separate living and sleeping quarters.

The standard outside cabins on Deck 10 (21 doubles, two singles and a singular Grand Suite) have views obstructed by lifeboats.

Overall, the average size of the 374 cabins is a roomy 220 square feet, with generous living and storage space as a legacy of the ship's history of long-distance cruises. Six cabins are adapted for passengers with special needs.

There are 179 cabins with baths, of which all but 20 also have showers. Two balcony cabins are allocated for single occupancy, and there are 58 single cabins in total. There is a total of 65 balconies, most of which are quite narrow -- adequate for sitting, reading or enjoying a cocktail but not for stretching out to lie in the sun.

A detailed chart in the company's brochure identifies which cabins have baths and or showers, what the bed arrangements are (fixed singles, fixed double or adaptable) and which have obstructed views. Booking systems allow passengers to select a specific cabin from the off. All cabins were redecorated in contemporary neutral colours during the recent refit, and room service is available round the clock at no extra charge.

Bathrooms are equipped with Citras toiletries in extremely generously sized bottles, and cabins have mini-bar refrigerators and hair dryers. Electrical sockets are standard UK three-pin. Flat-screen televisions are equipped with DVD players, and films can be borrowed free of charge from the Academy. Saga teamed up with LOVEFiLM to choose the 50 films most popular among the 50-and-older set, all of which are among the collection onboard. "The Shawshank Redemption" topped the poll, followed by "It's A Wonderful Life" and "Casablanca".

Because this was a forward cabin where the ship's side start to narrow to the 'sharp end' there was a little less room and wardrobe space than our previous midships cabin. Nevertheless, it was a very nice cabin with a good sized bathroom. No ... Read more

A pretty good class of cabin that gave us all that we required. Impressive was the very high standard of cleanliness. Located deck 9 and midships so there was little effect on us from the one day of high swell (force 5).... Read more
