Spirit of Oceanus Review
The Spirit of Oceanus is not only the Cruise West flagship but also the largest and most luxurious of the nine small ships that make up the fleet. The all-suite vessel first entered service in 1991 as the Renaissance V and was renamed Sun Viva I after being acquired by now defunct Sun Cruises. The ship was then purchased by Star Cruises and based in Singapore prior to being sold to Cruise West and undergoing a refit during which the casino was removed. Spirit of Oceanus arrived in Seattle to cruise Alaska in the spring of 2001 with the distinction of being Cruise West's first ocean-going ship and the only one equipped with stabilizers. It is also the only foreign-flagged ship in the fleet and is manned by an international crew.
Like the other Cruise West ships, the Spirit of Oceanus maintains the company's "passenger-friendly" philosophy dedicated to providing a personal, casual and relaxed onboard atmosphere that permeates the ship and encourages mingling among fellow passengers as well as frequent interaction between passengers and crew. Service in the dining room is attentive and congenial as waiters go out of their way to get to know everyone by their first name while the reliable staff of cabin attendants performs their duties consistently well. A spirit of camaraderie is established early on, and most of those aboard are well-traveled, independent-minded couples who prefer the ambience of a small ship that emphasizes encounters with wildlife and learning about the history and culture of the ports on the itinerary.
The port-intensive itinerary includes a complimentary shore excursion at every port along with a choice of several optional paid excursions. There is also a good selection of pre- and post-cruise land tours available to destinations throughout Alaska such as Nome, Fairbanks and Denali National Park, home of Mt. McKinley, and Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
