  • Enrichment cruises focus on music, oceanography, history, more
  • Sail with college professors and other regional experts
  • Free Internet, including Wi-Fi for all passengers
  • Exotic cruises to Central and South America

MV Explorer comes complete with a full-service spa, a pool and sun deck, a theater-style lounge, men's and women's saunas, a library, computer lab and several classrooms. There is one main dining venue and a snack bar poolside.

Most of the ship activities take place in the many classrooms and labs located throughout the vessel, with programs as diverse as Oceanography and Marine Life, Spanish Lessons and Caribbean Rhythms and Music. The ship's library is 8,000 volumes strong. Enrichment Voyages not only offers free Internet to guests onboard, but free Wi-Fi throughout the ship as well.

Despite the emphasis on enrichment and educational voyages, passengers can also take part in more traditional cruise offerings such as bingo, talent shows in the lounge, and Pilates, yoga, aerobics and weight-training in the fitness center.

Although there are eight suites with verandas, 12 without, and 30 "junior suites," the remaining inside and outside staterooms average just 140 square ft., small for a ship that is not a classic.

Breakfast and lunch are served buffet-style; supper is usually open seating and casual. At least twice per voyage there will be a semi-formal captain's dinner, and on many nights a specialty dining option with gourmet fare will be offered for a nominal charge.

About Enrichment Voyages

Enrichment Voyages is a partnership between Online Vacation Center and the Institute for Shipboard Education, a non-profit organization that administers the University of Virginia-sponsored Semesters at Sea program. The alliance was formed to offer in-depth enrichment cruise opportunities -- during hiatus periods for Semester at Sea -- to passengers who are seeking something beyond the traditional cruise experience.

Enrichment Voyages Fleet

Enrichment Voyages operates one ship only, the 25,000-ton, 836-passenger MV Explorer. The vessel was built in 2002 for Royal Olympic Cruises and acquired by the Institute for Shipboard Education in summer 2004.

Fellow Passengers

Most of the passengers are looking for an experience not provided on a typical cruise vacation, which they find on MV Explorer. Enrichment Voyages offers classes and field programs related to the itineraries on offer, which at this time includes the Amazon and Panama Canal. Passengers are primarily American, well-traveled, and over 40. Although there are activities designed for children on sea days, Enrichment Voyages makes it clear that most of the voyage activities are geared for adults.
