Court Hands Down Sentence to Royal Caribbean Passenger

September 24, 2003
The young female passenger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas who pleaded guilty to leaving notes onboard threatening to kill Americans has been sentenced to two years in federal prison.

20-year old Kelley Marie Ferguson, who hails from Laguna Hills, California, was traveling on the ship with her family last April. She eventually told authorities that she wrote the notes because she wanted to get off the ship early. The notes were found in a public restroom while Legend of the Seas was en route from Ensenada to Hilo. Upon discovery by ship's crew, Royal Caribbean immediately began an investigation aided, ultimately, by the assistance of 120 members of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, not to mention 40 bomb-sniffing dogs. The more than 2,400-passengers sailing on that cruise had been corralled into public rooms and were undergoing interviews until Ferguson admitted to penning the notes.

Ferguson begins serving her sentence November 4.
