Royal Caribbean Announces New Ship - Maybe

June 16, 2003
Royal Caribbean, working with Finnish shipbuilder Kvaerner Masa-Yards, has developed a design for a prototypical new class of ship that it is calling "Ultra Voyager." The proposed vessel, about 15 percent larger than its "world's biggest" Voyager-class of ships, would weigh in at about 160,000 tons and carry 3,600 passengers. Voyager ships hold 3,100.

The agreement with Kvaerner Masa-Yards, which is conditional and based, according to the announcement, on improving positions of euro-dollar exchange rate, calls for one ship to be delivered in 2006. There's an option for a second, and that would be due in 2007 or 2008.

Royal Caribbean says it hopes to finalize the order later this year.
