Man Goes Missing From Veendam

May 22, 2003
A 51-year old Canadian passenger was declared missing from Holland America’s Veendam when the cruise Seward-to-Vancouver Alaska cruise ended last Sunday. The man, traveling solo, was definitely onboard when the ship sailed from Ketchikan on Friday, a Holland America spokesman says, and the following day was spent at sea. His mysterious disappearance was noted on departure, when he failed to disembark and ship staffers found his personal belongings still in his cabin.

Canadian news reports suggest that the man, a psychotherapist in Toronto, was diabetic and cite family concerns that he may have fallen overboard accidentally.

At this point, Holland America has turned over the matter to local authorities who are conducting a search and rescue and a missing persons investigation and is, of course, cooperating.
