Statendam Passenger Disappears Overboard

January 8, 2003
A solo-sailing gentleman on Holland America's Statendam, in the last night of a 16-day Hawaii-to-San Diego cruise, disappeared last weekend and is presumed dead. The unidentified passenger had been to dinner the night before, as the ship was nearing Ensenada. The next morning, a crew member, entering his cabin at 7 a.m., noticed the passenger, who wasn't in his stateroom, "had taken no pains to pack," according to a Holland America spokeswoman. Since embarkation was slated to start relatively soon after, that raised concerns.  An extensive search began both on board and, via the U.S. Coast Guard, at sea, to no avail. At this point, the spokeswoman says the company has turned the matter over the port police in San Diego and has no further information.
