Lili Upgraded to Hurricane

September 30, 2002
Lili has finally been upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane -- a category one swirler at the moment, with winds at the 75 m.p.h. range -- and is following roughly the same trail as last week's Isidore. Which means? Once again, Western Caribbean cruise travelers whose itineraries called for stops at Cozumel, Costa Maya and Grand Cayman are more than likely to find themselves heading elsewhere.
This week, several cruise lines are heading to the Bahamas -- Carnival's Sensation and Fascination are among them. Norwegian Cruise Lines' reports that its Sun, the lineĀ¹s only impacted ship , will simply swap the order of established ports of call -- though a spokeswoman warns there may be further alterations based on Lili's impact later this week. And Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have, for Explorer of the Seas and Century, respectively, just washed their hands of the whole thing by swapping this week's scheduled Western Caribbean voyages for trips to the strangely bucolic and unaffected Eastern Caribbean.
