Propeller Problem on P&O Cruise Ship Causes Three-Day Delay
Oceana (1:10 p.m. EDT) -- For the second time in six weeks, a broken propeller shaft seal is hampering a P&O Cruises ship.

P&O's Oceana will be delayed for three days in Barcelona while repairs are made to the ship.

Passengers onboard will receive 25 percent cash refund as compensation for the delay, and the line is adding a “comprehensive programme of entertainment and shore excursions,” according to a statement from the line.

The statement said: “Oceana will be spending an additional three days alongside in Barcelona during cruise E406 due to a technical issue. This has no impact whatsoever on the safe operation of the ship but requires time in port to undertake the work. As a result the calls to Alghero, Cartagena and La Coruna have been replaced by an extended stay in Barcelona.

The Southampton Echo newspaper published text from a letter P&O's head of marketing Christopher Edgington sent to passengers apologising for the delay and explaining that a specialist dive team was required to carry out an underwater repair to the broken seal. The repair typically takes about 70 hours.

“We decided on Barcelona to make this repair because it is a fantastic city with lots to see and do with great bars and restaurants,” Edgington said in the letter.

Oceana will sail to Barcelona from Southampton on April 5, on a 14-night Mediterranean cruise.

In late February, P&O's Oriana suffered a broken propeller shaft seal that slowed the ship and ultimately forced the line to cut short a cruise by three days to make repairs.
