German Cruise Passenger Killed During Botched Robbery

Update, 9:25 a.m. EST: According to a statement from AIDA, the shooting happened at 1 p.m. during an attempted robbery at a souvenir shop. The incident is under investigation by local authorities.

"The thoughts and commiseration of AIDA Cruises are with the relatives," the line said.

AIDA is the only cruise line scheduled to visit Margarita Island this year.

(February 8, 3:46 p.m. EST) -- A German cruise passenger was killed Friday during a botched robbery attempt while on an excursion on Venezuela's Margarita Island, Reuters is reporting.

A quick search of cruise ships in the area revealed only AIDALuna was in port at the time. AIDA is a German cruise line, marketed solely to the German market.

According to Reuters, the man, aged 76, was shot outside a shopping center. Another foreign tourist was also said to have been injured in the incident.

Cruise Critic is awaiting comment from AIDA.
