Carnival Cruise Lines Worker Killed in Accident

October 21, 2013
(9:05 a.m. EDT) -- A Carnival Conquest crew member was killed yesterday in an accident while he was doing exterior maintenance work on the ship in New Orleans.

The man was on a cherry picker along the side of the ship when he became wedged between the cherry picker and a platform holding one of the ship's lifeboats. Though ship medical personnel and local paramedics responded the crew member died on scene.

"We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to our crewmember's family and loved ones in the wake of this terrible tragedy," a Carnival spokesman said. "Everyone in the Carnival family is heartbroken."

Carnival is providing grief counseling to any crew member who wants it.

The Coast Guard is investigating the accident.
