HAL Names 3rd Vista-Class Ship

April 29, 2002
This has been the week of the Westerdam shuffle. Just as Costa Crociere held an official rechristening -- the former Holland America Westerdam was transferred last month to the Carnival Corp. sister cruise line and will sail Europe -- and re-dubbed the ship the CostaEuropa, Holland America announced that it will name its third Vista Class ship -- you guessed it -- Westerdam.

Holland America’s Westerdam is slated for launch in 2003 and the 85,000-ton, 1,848-passenger ship is the third in the line’s history to bear the name. Ultimately, there will be five Vista class ships in Holland America’s fleet. The first, Zuiderdam, debuts this November and is followed up by Oosterdam in June 2003.

The last two, as yet unnamed, will premiere, approximately, in fall 2005 and spring 2006.
