Extended Dry Dock for Sea Cloud

April 24, 2002
Sea Cloud, the one-of-a-kind 360 ft. four-masted yacht (which in its heyday was owned by Wall Street tycoon E.F. Hutton) is in a lengthier dry dock than originally planned. The historic ship, at one time the world’s largest private yacht, laid up for refurbishment in a yard in northern Croatia, caught fire. While the fire, caused by the electrical system, was contained primarily to a few cabins, the effect extended beyond, to water and smoke damage. As a result, dry dock -- which was to wrap up in time for the ship to sail a full European season -- has been stretched until mid-October. The 2,532-ton Sea Cloud will then sneak in a couple of European itineraries before heading to the Caribbean, where it will spend the winter sailing regularly scheduled voyages.
