European River Cruise Company Sets Eyes on U.S. River

March 26, 2013
Viking Embla (3:44 p.m. EST) -- Viking River Cruises let slip last week that it plans to begin sailing the Mississippi River in 2015, the first time a European river company will attempt to sail in North America.

The company will use a modified Viking Longship design, similar in style to the ships that sail Europe's riverways but different in dimension and passenger capacity. Unlike the two river boats currently sailing the Mississippi (American Queen and Queen of the Mississippi), the Viking ship will not have a paddlewheel.

Viking also revealed it plans to market the new ship to North American cruisers, 55 and older.
