Cruise Passenger Drowns Off the Coast of Cozumel

March 1, 2013
(4:28 p.m. EST) -- A Carnival Elation passenger drowned February 26 while ashore in Cozumel, Mexico, the Florida Times-Union reported.

Andrew Wooten, a 50-year-old Jacksonville, Florida, resident, was apparently swept away by an undercurrent, the Florida state representative for the Jacksonville area told the newspaper.

Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed the death. "On Tuesday, an adult male guest from the Carnival Elation passed away from an apparent drowning while snorkeling in Cozumel," spokesman Vance Gulliksen told Cruise Critic. "The guests were snorkeling independently and not as part of a snorkel excursion booked through the ship. Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathies to the individual's family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time."

Carnival Elation was on a five-night cruise that departed New Orleans on February 23 and returned February 28.
