|18-Year-Old Man Dies on Carnival Cruise Ship|
(3:44 p.m. EST) -- An 18-year-old died while at sea onboard Carnival Miracle 's February 18 sailing. Multiple reports assert the cause of death was alcohol poisoning.
Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed the man's death. "We can confirm that an 18-year-old male guest passed away in his cabin at approximately 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26 during an eight-day voyage of the Carnival Miracle, which ended later that morning in New York," spokesman Vance Gulliksen said. "The cause of death has not been determined… We extend our deepest sympathies to the young man's family and loved ones during this very difficult time."
The Troy Record identifies the man as Seth Younes, a senior at Saratoga Springs High School.
Cruise Critic member TRESE, who claimed to be married to Younes' cousin but was not onboard Miracle, said alcohol was involved in his death.
Commenting on the "speculation" that Younes might have died from alcohol poisoning, Gulliksen said, "We can confirm that, based on the preliminary investigation there is no indication he was served any alcohol by shipboard personnel."
Following his death, Carnival contacted the FBI "as per standard practice in this type of occurrence," he added. "FBI representatives boarded the ship on Tuesday morning to conduct an investigation. No foul play is suspected."
According to J. Peter Donald in the New York field office of the FBI, the Bureau is investigating the death, but would not comment on the cause of death.
"That is part of what we're investigating," Donald told Cruise Critic.
The investigation, he added, will consist of reviewing any evidence of Younes death. Carnival is cooperating in the investigation, he said.
