|Royal Caribbean Names Next-Gen Cruise Ships, Starts Construction on First|
(10:20 a.m. EST) -- Royal Caribbean International revealed the names of its next generation cruise ships and started construction on the first. The 158,000-ton, 4,100-passenger Quantum of the Seas is scheduled to debut in fall 2014, with sister ship, Anthem of the Seas, launching the following spring.
Quantum of the Seas' steel cutting ceremony, traditionally the first step in a multi-year ship-building process, took place last week at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, where the two ships will be built. "After three years of design and advance planning, this is the first step of the construction of the ship and I look forward to seeing it all come together in the coming months," Royal Caribbean's president and CEO Adam Goldstein said.
Royal Caribbean had until now been referring to duo as code name "Project Sunshine," but potential monikers have been floating around for months. Spencercoop, a savvy Cruise Critic member, discovered the line had trademarked several ship names in November 2012. In addition to Quantum and Anthem, Royal has also trademarked Ovation, Passion, Pulse and Vantage of the Seas.
While specific ship details remain scant, Quantum and Anthem represent a significant reduction in size compared to RCI's 225,282-ton Oasis-class pair, which are the world's largest cruise ships. The Quantum-class ships will each carry 4,100 passengers, while the Oasis-class ships carry 5,400 passengers (double occupancy).
Additional details about Quantum of the Seas will be unveiled over the next few months. Follow along on our Quantum of the Seas ship page.
