Man Falls to His Death on Carnival Fantasy

(5:25 p.m. EST) -- A 26-year-old man has died after falling from one of the upper levels of Carnival Fantasy's six-deck-high atrium to the lobby level on Friday evening. The ship was in the middle of a five-night cruise from Charleston to the Bahamas.

According to a statement by Carnival, the ship was docked in Nassau at the time. Local authorities were notified and came onboard the ship to investigate. The investigation delayed the ship's departure for the second time that day; the ship was scheduled to depart at 6 p.m. but ropes got caught in the ship's thrusters and that problem took several hours to fix. The end result was that Carnival Fantasy was forced to skip its scheduled Saturday call in Freeport. The ship remained in Nassau until 3 p.m. today and will return to Charleston as planned on Monday.

While the Carnival statement says the man fell, the Associated Press is reporting that Bahamas police officials are claiming that he jumped. We have reached out to Carnival for clarification and will keep you posted.

Carnival's CareTeam is providing support to the man's family.
