Update, 12:30 p.m. EDT: According to a statement from Celebrity Cruises, the man who went overboard is a 31-year-old Filipino crewmember (and not a passenger as first reported). A review of the ship's closed circuit camera footage showed the crewmember climbing over a railing on Deck 3 and going overboard. The man has not been found, and the BBC is reporting that the search and rescue mission has been called off.
(5 a.m. EDT) -- The BBC is reporting today that a passenger on Celebrity Eclipse went overboard late Friday while the ship was traveling some eight miles north of Cherbourg on its way to Southampton.
French emergency workers conducted a search and rescue for the man, believed to have gone into the water at about 22:15 B.S.T. but ultimately called off the hunt.
The ship, which is based in Southampton, concluded its cruise this morning.
