HAL Revamps Maasdam
December 28, 2001
As the Caribbean increasingly becomes a family cruise destination, lines are devoting -- and specially designing -- ships that will appeal across generational lines. Think Princess, with Grand and Golden Princess. Royal Caribbean, with its Voyager, Explorer, and Adventure of the Seas. Carnival?s Victory, Triumph and Destiny. Now Holland America?s getting into the act. Sort of. The cruise line, which has decided to home port a ship in the Caribbean on a year round basis for the first time in a long time, isn't rushing out with a brand new mega ship (who is?). But it has given Maasdam, the ship designated to stick with the Caribbean all year, a bigger-and-better Club Hal. Features include a stand-alone teen center, complete with a dance floor -- and fog system. There?s a larger facility for younger folk, with a big-screen television, VCR, DVD and audio sound system not to mention the now-obligatory computer stations. And Holland America has developed just-for-kids shore excursions.
