| Rudder Damage on Celebrity Century Cancels Cruise |
Update: Celebrity Century Rudder Repair
Celebrity's Perfect Storm?
(12 p.m. EDT) -- The remainder of Celebrity Century's current Mediterranean sailing has been canceled, due to damage to the ship's rudders.
The damage was discovered during a dive inspection while the ship was docked in Nice, France, on October 14. Because the rudders are used to steer the ship, the line deemed that the repairs require a dry dock.
Celebrity Century will remain in Nice until 5 p.m. Saturday, October 16, and plans call for it to resume service in time for its next scheduled sailing on October 25.
Passengers on the current sailing will be allowed to remain onboard through Saturday and will be offered complimentary phone and Internet services. Passengers will receive full refunds; the cruise line is also giving each passenger 25 percent of his or her current cruise fare in the form of a future cruise credit.
Celebrity Century had just departed from Barcelona on a 12-night cruise on October 13, the ship's last European sailing of the season.
The October 25 sailing is a transatlantic crossing, after which the ship will spend the winter sailing a series of Western Caribbean cruises out of Miami.
