British news outlet Kent Online reports today that border officers seized £1.4 million worth of cocaine -- some 35 kilos -- from cabins aboard the MSC Opera, while it was docked in Dover on 21 May. Eight individuals from Latvia and Lithuania have reportedly been arrested and charged with drug smuggling.
All eight have since pleaded not guilty, and will appear at Dover Magistrates' Court on 27 May, according to Kent Online.
The ship was in Dover for the day while en route to Amsterdam from Brazil. An MSC spokeswoman did not have additional information to share at press time, but tells us she'll be in touch as soon as she does. A spokesperson at the U.K. Border Agency was not immediately available for comment.
In related news, two Fred. Olsen passengers were each sentenced yesterday to 12 years in jail for possession of almost £8 million in cocaine when Black Watch arrived in the U.K. from South America back in March.
